Episode Recap: "Lay Your Hands on Me"

After a long absence, Grey's Anatomy returned tonight with what could be the last glimpse we have at Seattle Grace for a while...and they did not disappoint. In a change from the norm, Bailey talked us through tonight's episode and from the moment she stated, "God created man and it's been downhill ever since," we knew that it was going to be a night unlike any other.

Derek and Mark started things off by taking what looked like a light-hearted nature walk through the woods. Their travels ended up on a picturesque hilltop, where Derek exclaimed he was going to build his dream house. He wasn't kidding. With the architectural plans already mapped out, Derek blindsided Meredith with the news and her reaction was less than enthusiastic. Perhaps she was as shocked as I was to learn that McDreamy had put any thought into ever moving out of his shiny trailer. Or perhaps she was too preoccupied with her culinary creation for Lexie, to properly process the news. Either way, I was disappointed that she didn't react with at least a little more excitement at the prospect. Especially since it seemed like Meredith was finally starting to come around to the idea of having a more meaningful and committed relationship with Derek. It did seem that way, didn't it? Or maybe it's been so long since the last episode of Grey's Anatomy that I’m just remembering that wrong!

While this was an intense episode, especially where Bailey was concerned, I did really enjoy how the faith healer, Elizabeth (Glenne Headly), managed to touch so many lives. Not only did she seemingly heal some of the other patients in the hospital with her positive energy, but she also seemed to be able to read people. In a very revealing moment, she suggested that Karev had "a darkness" in his throat---alleging that something had happened to him in the past that was so hurtful, he couldn't speak of it now. She then went on to suggest that he hurts others now just to spread the pain around, further noting that he was "a sweet boy, but you're not a good man." Those were some strong accusations, but knowing the little bit that we do about Karev's family history, she seemed to be right on target. In the end though, I do think Alex tried to redeem himself when he chose to bring Izzie to Elizabeth's side. It was nice to see him not only grant Elizabeth's wish (to have someone explain to her the process of her pending surgery), but it was also an endearing moment when Alex told Izzie, "Yang's got nothing on you." This came on the heels of the heart to heart they shared earlier, when Izzie admitted that she wished she had the kind of faith in herself that Cristina does. There's hope for you yet, Alex!

Of course, the biggest storyline of the night was the accident Miranda's baby suffered at home. I hate to admit it, but for a brief second, I was afraid that Mr. Bailey had somehow engineered the accident with Tuck, in a horrible attempt to get Miranda's attention off of work for once and get her to focus on her family. I know, I know, I feel terrible for having had that thought, especially after seeing how upset both parents were over the accident. Making matters worse, it didn't help that they never seemed to stop blaming one another for the incident. And now, even though Tuck is on the mend, it's hard to say if Bailey's marriage will be too, or not.

One thing that did shock me tonight was the way that George so nonchalantly chatted with Meredith about the Derek/Rose kiss. Would he really be so thoughtless and assume that Meredith already knew about the lip lock? I think not! I would have expected George to fish around the subject with Meredith first, to be sure she already knew, before discussing his opinion on the matter. Then things went from bad to worse when Meredith confronted Derek about the kiss...ultimately leading to their break-up (once again).

Some of the other highlights from tonight, for me, included: Lexie willingly eating Meredith's breakfast, even though she was allergic to eggs and later suffered a nasty reaction; Cristina opting to hold baby Tuck's hand during surgery, rather than take part in it; Callie telling George's mom that she loved being an O'Malley; and Hahn suggesting to Sloan that he is too pretty, but if they didn't work together there might be something more between them.

Well, that's it for now and quite possibly, for the season. Let's keep our fingers crossed though, that the strike will end soon. Until then, I guess we just have to "have a little faith..."

by far, the best episode so far. Meredith needs therapy. I mean, he saved her life, for goodness sakes... She really has issues. When she says that she can't trust him, I just screamed, Derek just leave the b#@!#,(sorry, folks) I mean give me a break. Yeah, I would have been upset with my boyfriend for kissing another woman, but it is her fault, she has been such a flake. But he should have waited a while before asking Rose out. I think he is not being fair to anyone, esp himself. He should take some time to heal and really get over Meredith. She should have been more excited about the house. Moving on, I really enjoyed the Faith Healer storyline, very touching.. but I disagree with Karev, Cristina rocks! that was so cool her holding Tucker's hand. Loved the episode!

Really not a bad episode tonight. I enjoyed it.

And as much of a Meredith-hater that I am, I thought she had some valid points in her break-up with Derek. Yes, she's been a whiny, selfish harpie, but I could see how she wouldn't trust him and would be upset that he'd kissed another woman, but I especially agreed with her assessment that Derek just needed someone, anyone. I think that's very true of him, considering how fast he was to ask Rose out.
Otherwise, I'm not a Meredith fan at all.

I don't see a good ending for Bailey's marriage. And I missed a few seconds. Why was she so mad at Hahn after the surgery? Was that because Hahn wouldn't let her stay in the OR?

This was a great episode. I knew this was going to be a tear jerker. And boy I couldn't stop crying during the whole episode. Chandra Wilson was fantastic in this episode.

I don't blame Derek for asking out Rose. Meredith doesn't need therapy, she needs a swift kick in the butt for not wanting to be with Derek. If she couldn't trust(which is a total cop out) then why was she lusting and telling him to pick her over Addison? Does she realize that millions of women would absolutely love to have a guy like Derek? I know I would. Obviously not! I think a slap to the face is more like it.

Anyway I cracked up when Bailey said "God created man and it's been downhill ever since," that was the only time I laughed during this episode.

I'm glad others liked this episode. As for me, I was like zzzzzzzzzzz.

I don't know I just didn't connect at all to this episode. Maybe this is a sign I should finally give up on Grey's? After all, this was a major character's child, and I couldn't care less whether it survived or not. Sorry, please don't hate me.

I'm just so tired of Grey's trying to make us cry. And then putting song after song in the background. This formula just isn't working for me. I was going to give up on Grey's and then, I think it was the the last episode (it's been so long, it is hard for me to remember too) it was the light-hearted funny old Grey's that I loved so much. I guess I just keep hoping that it will return to that formula.

Overall, it was a fine episode, a little sentimental for my tastes, but fine. However, the faith-healer storyline pissed me off so much that I could hardly look at the tv without shouting at it.

Here's the thing: the chief said something along the lines of that faith healing "couldn't hurt", after which Bailey brought her in to see her son. The fact is, faith healing is incredibly hurtful, people die every day because they trust their local con-man healer and they go there instead of their doctor. I have a friend who lost a family member because that person put their trust in some pseudo-cultish huckster and didn't trust the doctors who knew what was best for her. The fact is this: FAITH HEALING DOES NOT WORK!!!! At most you get a placebo-effect response which wears off after a few days. Every time a damn tv-show does this, more and more people believe it, and refuse to go through chemotherapy or something just because it's such a difficult process. I mean, if Grey's Anatomy says it works, then it does, right? Lets put that bothersome science away, my pastor knows better!

That healer is not a miracle-worker. You know who's a miracle worker? Dr. Hahn. She saved Bailey's son's life, by using her enormous amount of skill and knowledge. It's people like her that make the difference in this world. Who cares if she's not very nice, unlike that deluded con-woman, she actually saves people instead of put them at risk. Seriously, a few cold-readings and fortuitous coincidences (aided with the placebo effect, which trained doctors should know to recognize), and what? Suddenly there's magic in this world? I pisses me off to no end.

It's downright irresponsible for a show like Grey's Anatomy to do those kinds of storylines, because people believe them, and they pay with their life.

As a faithful Meredith & Derek fan, I did not like this episode at all, except for the part when Meredith tried to cook. I want them together and that is all there is to it.

Caligal please stop watching if this episode did not affect you.

I try not to get too worked up over fiction because life can be such craziness by it self, but this episode of Grey's was why we all started watching in the first place.

I know faith and love are things people struggle with every day. And when entertainment can remind us to keep loving and keep being faithful then that's a bonus.

I haven't complained much about the strike, but after last night's episode I realized that the writers can complain all they want about the residuals they don't get and what not.

The truth of the matter is there are thousands of people who work with writes who are out of work.

And in all reality there are millions of people, teachers, police officers, fire fighters and such who don't make as nearly as much the writers and they take care of all of us every day. So I say get back to work.

I thought for sure they were going to kill off little Tuck, and that last scene where he started choking I just about leapt off the chair. It was an excellent episode that gave us more insight into Bailey’s marriage and how hard it is to be a stay-at-home parent, with the roll-reversal of Tucker being the frustrated, frazzled stay-at-home parent and Bailey working 80 hour weeks and still being the one to call the plummer.
Another interactive moment (but this one had me howling) was Izzie outing George’s divorce to Mrs. O’Malley. Please tell me I wasn’t the only one laughing and yelling “shut up!” at the tv ;) But I loved the second scene with Callie and George’s mom. Without hitting us over the head we slowly but surely get a clear picture of all the characters.

Also loved the scenes with Alex.

Finally Meredith said what I have been kvetching about now since season 2 – Derek can’t stand to be alone, and he just wants someone, ANYONE. He could have just as easily ended up with Yang or Izzie the night he and Meredith met. Who wants to be in a relationship knowing they are simply a placeholder? Just kind of tired of all the Mer bashing when it’s obvious that McDreamy is far from McPerfect.

If this ends up being the season finale, this actually wasn’t a bad way to end it.

I completely agree with you ctheslayer. I thought earlier this season when McDreamy talked with Sloane about how damaged Meredith was, he understood. If he really loved Meredith, he would be understanding, and maybe suggest they go to couples' counseling, instead of jumping into the arms of the next pretty girl that walks in front of him. At this rate, I would rather he and Addison stay together. At least I liked Addison.

I loved last nites episode, glad that it wasn't Mer we had to hear as the voice over. The only thing that I hated was the stupid weather came on when Callie went to talk to George's mom (it was after Izzie had outed them), so I missed what Callie said. UGGGH & the weather report had been scrolling across the bottom of the tv, so why they had to show the doppler thing I'll never know, it didn't even start raining until 2 hours "AFTER" GA went off, dang weather.

Ok, the show, sorry. I just love Alex, he's my McDreamy. I mean he can be so evil one minute & then do something so sweet the next. I crack up at Sloan trying to get with Hahn, sure hope that nothing happens between her & ol Callie. I have read that they may go that route with Hahn, I just don't know how I would like it with Callie.

George is just getting more & more stupid. I used to love George, but now it's like someone slap him already. I don't know if it's because he's back being an intern while everybody else is off being residents, but come on. Speaking of that, where were all the other interns? The only ones we've seen in a while are just George & Lexi, is she living at their house now? Who all lives there now? I mean we've got Mer, then Izz, I think Alex & I've seen Cristina there (but in Mer's bed WTF?) Now George was on the floor & Lexi was in a bed. Is that now a hotel?

Ok, I'm done....come back writers!

Good for you Meredith!!! Leave that cheating ass*le! He doesn't deserve you!! "Mc Dreamy is dead, long live Mc Steamy!!" (or even better, bring Michael Vartan for Meredith!! Have her be with someone that TRULY loves her, that when he says he'll wait, doesn't wait for three weeks, then kiss another woman on the SAME DAY he had sex with the woman he "loves"!)
Shonda killed another Mer & Der fan (killed her show at the same time, idiot!), but then again, she doesn't believe in happy & mature relationships, right? With the end of Bailey's marriage, there is not any working relationship on this show anymore.. *sigh*
I always watched that show for those 5 interns & their 2 or 3 attendings, with Meredith & Derek's relationship as a central part of the show. The fun, the love, the banter, it's all gone now. Shonda brought SOOO many new cast members that there is no screen time for the main characters we actually love anymore!! I just don't care about Hahn!!! (her & Mc Steamy?? Really?? With Callie or Izzie, of, but her? As credible as Gizzie!! But then again, Shonda likes "no chemistry couples"! Just look at Derek & Rose! Laughable!) And I would really prefer to know WHY THE HE** is Derek acting the way he is (like an ass & a selfish coward) than to hear about Lexie's problems!! Now Rose? Hey, it IS called GREY's Anatomy, right??
I guess I should have said "Grey's Anatomy is dead, Long live Desperate Housewives & Bones!!"

OOOH, Michael Vartan, now that's a McYummilicious that they could bring in, course I don't know if he should be hookin up with Mer & all her issues. They could bring back Finn he seemed to truly care about her & she dumped him for dipwad. Another person that I could see on this show is Peter Gallagher from the OC. I don't know why I could see him as a doc there.
