Episode Recap: Piece of My Heart

“Reunited and it feels so good!” Yes, it was almost like old times when Addison showed up tonight. If she hadn’t had to spend so much time “catching up” on all of the soapy Seattle Grace details, it might have felt like she had never left. And I almost allowed myself to be tricked into thinking she might return to Washington when the Chief suggested he could start her paperwork (despite knowing that Private Practice is fully expected to return in the fall). So, I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when she dismissed the idea of a permanent stay by saying, “I needed to come back to see that it was right to leave.” Perhaps that’s how you feel Addison, but I still think you belong at Seattle Grace!

Aside from Addison, there seemed to be a lot going on tonight. For starters, Ava (Elizabeth Reaser) returned to tell Alex she was preggers and it was a distinct possibility that the baby was his. Alex’s response could best be described as stone cold when he asked her point blank if she was going to keep the baby or have an abortion. He then spent the rest of the night doing his best to avoid her. However, after an intense surgery on a baby suffering from ectopia cordis, it was clear the experience had affected him and had him rethinking fatherhood. In the end, we saw him reaching out to Ava in acceptance of the baby, even though we now know that Ava isn’t really pregnant. One can only wonder how he’ll react when he learns the truth.

Meanwhile, the relationship between Callie and Erica was burgeoning, until Addison began questioning if it was actually a budding romance in disguise. Callie seemed genuinely surprised at the suggestion, which then led to a lot of awkward moments with Erica. The uneasiness reached the breaking point at the bar when Erica made a point of removing a stray hair from Callie’s lips, which sent Callie running into the arms of Mark on the dance floor. Right now, I can honestly say I’m not sure where this storyline is going. Does Erica really have a crush on Callie? Does Callie have a crush on Erica, but has not fully realized it yet? Or does Erica secretly have a thing for Cristina, which might explain why Erica tries to push her away so much. I’m so confused, but at least Mark looks happy!

Mer/Der had a long night too, as they embarked on their clinical trial. The patient, Phillip (Jason O'Mara), proved to be suffering from the emotional fallout brought on by his tumor. He proved to be downright nasty at times, which left his wife, Jennifer (Clea DuVall), with only this thought to cling to: “It’s just the tumor talking…” I have to admit, this was my least favorite plot of the night. Mostly because Scott’s maniacal laughter scared me in that Jack Nicholson in The Shining kind of way. I fully predict I will have nightmares tonight, but I digress. The sad part is that Scott did not survive, but in a strange way the event still had a positive effect on Mer/Der. And so, we move one baby step closer to their romantic reunion.

Throughout the night there were lots of other important moments too, like when Bailey confessed to Addison that she and Tucker were on the outs, or when Izzie found her inner Gandhi and was able to assure an HIV patient she could have a healthy baby.

Some of tonight’s highlights included Cristina trying to “talk girl,” Lexie, the messenger, telling George that “Nobody wants to play darts with their boss,” and Bailey telling Alex, “Right now you’re feeling all your feelings out in the open. Do me a favor and stuff them back in.” Ultimately though, my favorite moment came at the end, when Derek, Addison, Rose and Meredith all ended up in the elevator together. Clearly, it was already an awkward moment, but it became priceless when Mark got on at the next floor and slyly said to Derek: “I bet you wish you had taken the stairs right about now.”

It was definitely a busy night and I’m curious to know what everyone out there thought of Addison’s appearance. Did her return fill a void that has been missing for quite some time? Nice recap. You said most of all I want to say. However, I have one thing I'd like to mention that you did not. It was also at the bar when Addison was leaving and confronted Mer about Derek. I liked how she said she wanted to kick her ass. I thought Addison was going someplace else with that and I wasn't expecting her to basically tell Mer not to let him get away from her.

I also hope that Izzie tells Alex about Ava. I really don't want to see him suckered into anything.

I really liked Rebecca/Ava, but if she's deceiving Alex about something as serious as a pregnancy (as if she had no idea about all of his issues with his horrible childhood), then that's just creepy.

Tonight we got to see Vintage Bailey again, when she told Karev to stuff all his feelings back in (can anyone possibly be more forceful without raising their voice than Bailey?) and when she told Addison that she couldn't tell her what was going on in her life.

Loved seeing Addison again, but I wasn't so convinced that she was convinced that leaving was the right thing to do. It was almost as if they purposely left the door ajar in case Private Practice flounders next season. But the "I've grown!" hug was priceless. Funniest thing I've seen on GA in forever.

How can Derek not see that there's no future with Rose? I guess part of moving on is the obligatory rebound relationship ("McRebound" in the OR? another p*sser!!), but come on, he can't really think there's even a remote chance that she's The One for him.

I kinda like the sapphic storyline between Callie and Erica, although it is a bit of a cliche that the new "touch b*tch" in town turns out to be a lesbian.

By they way, it wasn't Steven Flynn who played DuVall's husband. It was Jason OMara. Wanted to give credit where credit is due. He does the creepy thing really well.

Seattle Grace needs Addison! Addison seemed to be the Addison we all love last night, not the watered down Private Practice version, so maybe they have a problem sucessfully writing for the character over there.

Great recap. Loved Addison's return if only for one episode. For me the one negative thing about her return (when you also throw in Burke's departure) is it only highlights that the addition of Hahn to the cast is a poor substitute. Try as I might I can't find one redeeming quality in her character (except her surgical skills). Highlight of the night was the elevator scene. Can't wait for Rose to be gone.

Oh yeah, Jason O'Mara played Scott not Steven Flynn.

I'm confused. How do we know it was Ava that wasn't pregnant? I got the impression it was the couple whose hopes she got up. Did I miss something?

When Erica admitted that Christina reminder her of herself, I so wanted Addison to say "So what does that mean? You hate yourself? Is that why you treat her like crap?"

When Addison asked Callie if there was sthg going on b/w her and Erica, I felt Callie protested too much. She either has feeling for Erica or is trying to deny them.

Thank you demonchild37 for clearing that up. You beat me to it. That was SO Jason O'Mara playing Scott. Love him as Stuart on Men In Trees!

Steven Flynn did play Scott Robinson, and Jason O'Mara played Philip, the guy with the tumor. I think Scott was either the husband of the HIV infected lady, or the hippie husband.

Last nite's episode was an 8 compared to last week's which fell way below my expectations. I am so with the blogger who said they do not know which direction this Callie/ Mark/Erica storyline is going. I totally agree. Hahn is still straight IMO. I guess I still have high hopes for an Erica and Mark tryst. Call me crazy, but prior evidence points to the contrary on this one. Ava has got to go!!

I got the impression that Ava/Rebecca really does think she's pregnant. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't think she's trying to trap Alex. I think there is something else wrong with her.

Gosh have i missed Addison! You know i spent so long hating her, wanting Derek and mer back together, that i guess i never fully realized how great and important she was to the show. It was def nice to have her come and mix things up. I am glad Kate Walsh is having success at Private Practice, but i do think GA has suffered without her. I would love it if they had more cross over stories lines, just so that we can see her more.

I also find it interesting that Izzy finds out the truth about ava... i really feel like were heading towards izzy and alex getting back together... but i could be reading into everything as well

Now if only Isaiah could come back for an episode and properly wrap up his storyline with Yang. Poor Sandra Oh is lost without Burke.

Rebecca Pope was the patient at the end whose lab results Izzie received. Rebecca Pope = Ava. They only call her Ava because that was the name she picked out last season when she got her new face/had amnesia and didn't know her real name. So because Alex thought she looked like an Ava (I think that's how it went) she picked that name to stick with.
