April 26, 2007: Desire
This episode effectively set the tone for next week's two-hour spin-off that will establish Kate Walsh's potential new series wherein Addison skips town for L.A. after getting Sleepless in Seattle. Poor gal couldn't get a break. First, McSteamy tells her he broke their no-sex agreement because he figured out that he wasn't the one for her (it didn't help when he saw Addison and Alex come out of the closet in more ways than one). Then, just when she figured she had a new boy toy after their totally hot closet sex, Alex gave her the "You're not my girlfriend" speech. Cue Debbie Downer. I felt that final narration line from Meredith summed up the hour quite eloquently: "People who suffer the most are the ones who don't know what they want." Terrific script by Mark Wilding.
I was glad they didn't drag out the Izzie-George-Callie awkwardness anymore and had Callie finally speak up. I liked how Callie couldn't really be specific with her request to Izzie, saying: "Do whatever you have to do, but give me my husband back." I also liked how everyone seemed to be opening up with their coworkers: Callie telling Addison she caught George in a lie; Izzie squealing to Burke that she had an affair with George; and Derek sharing his feelings about Meredith to Burke. One thing we can assume won't happen is George getting that transfer to Mercy West. Mercy me, I want T.R. Knight to stay put, thanks! I would think Callie would leave Seattle Grace before George would (although I love me some Sara Ramirez).
You know how sometimes it is difficult to see certain TV actors known for past roles play new roles? I kept thinking that Skinner from The X-Files was having an affair behind Dawson’s mama’s back. But because Mitch Pileggi and Mary-Margaret Humes are such good actors, I got over it. Rowena King was also excellent as Celeste, "the other woman." OK, I've got to say it: That opening scene when Larry, the SGH chairman of the board, dropped his pants to reveal his unfortunate medical condition really took balls. There. I feel better. Just when you think you've seen it all on this show, they give us a patient who had a not-so-tiny fish swim up his penis and cause his testicles to enlarge. Ouch. Luckily, they got that sucker out! I loved that the term "penis fish" became a metaphor for Izzie to describe George: "You're my penis fish." George's comeback line was classic: "You don't even have a penis — how am I the fish?" I enjoyed seeing the two of them behave more like they used to be with each other: two best friends. But Izzie can't seem to get over their moment.
Speaking of patients’ lives acting as metaphors for the doctors’ lives, how great was it for Larry's wife to admit she knew about his affair with his assistant? Hearing her say “the wife always knows” really hit home for George.
Other highlights: — Bailey literally taking the cake. — Having Kali Rocha back as Sydney. But I'm an easy sell when it comes to Kali. She can read the phone book and I'd laugh. — Alex being so caring and supportive to Ava (Elizabeth Reaser), especially during her C-section. No, Addison, this is not another Denny Duquette situation. Alex knows Ava currently has no family to be there for her. — Ava giving Alex all the dirt on the hospital's sexual shenanigans: "It's like watching a soap." It sure is, Jane. I mean Ava. — Cristina using the term "V.I.-Penis" when describing the Chairman to Bailey (maybe the Chairman's "you've lost your spunk"-like talk with the Chief will convince Webber not to step down). — Mark unsuccessfully coming on to Meredith. — Burke and Cristina agreeing that the red velvet cake was the best wedding cake choice.
One non-highlight for me: — The patient with the perpetual runny nose (Ramon De Ocampo) that ended up being leaking spinal fluid freaked me out since my nose has been running all day nonstop and my back hurts. Perhaps I should get this checked out? Hmm....
I felt really bad for Meredith at the end. Ellen Pompeo did an awesome job conveying Meredith's feelings of hurt when Derek admitted to not being sure if he (essentially) wanted to continue their relationship. After Derek mentioned that after she came out of the water he kept trying to save her by breathing for her, how horrible for Meredith to hear him say: "I don't know if I want to keep trying to breathe for you." This, after she thought she did all of Derek's favorite things in bed. Yet another issue that next week's two-hour episode will deal with. Can't wait.

Mark didn't sleep with anyone, on or off the screen.. He kept up the 'no sex for 60 days' deal. After seeing Addie come out of the closet with Alex after their sex Mark 'let's go of' Addie so to speak.. so it was Addie who lost the bet.
It still was harsh when both Mark and Alex turn her down.. esp what Alex tells her.. ouch!

I'm actually kind of proud of Mark. He realized that he wasn't right for Addie and did the right thing. He let her go. Hopefully, he'll learn from this.
As for Derek, someone needs to smack him or something. He trivializing everything he and Mer have been through over the past year by acting this way. I think he needs to hear about Mer's afterlife experience. She had the perfect opportunity to tell him and she just left. Gahhh. They better get it together soon.
I can't stand Sydney. She gets on my nerves. Bailey's gonna be chief resident, deal with it. And I'm betting the Chief doesn't retire. I'm calling that one right now.
Can't wait for next week!

Dave, maybe I heard him wrong, but I thought Burke hated the Red Velvet cake. I thought he told Izzie it should have been spongy and he didn't like the icing. I think he was just relieved when he thought Christina was making a decision.
I can't believe how cruel Alex and McSteamy were last night. I could understand if Alex had told Addison he was sorry but this wasn't a good time to start a relationship. (Of course, there would be no spin-off then.) For Derek to be so cruel to Meridith was heartbreaking to me.

No, I think Burke picked the Red Velvet cake because I am pretty sure Izzie even said something about him picking that one. Burke was relieved that Christina picked the same cake as him.
As for Mark, yeah he totally lied. He didn't sleep with anyone he was just trying to give her the easy out. He didn't want to hear her say she didn't want him, so instead he wanted her to think he couldn't do it. Maybe so that this way she wouldn't feel guilty for not choosing him?
Did anyone else see the Chairman of the Board's, ummm... affliction when he pulled down his pants? I even rewound it to see it again to make sure I wasn't seeing things. I was actually pretty shocked that they would allow it on TV. Granted, it was a really quick blur but it still kinda surprised me. I'm not one of those that cares, I just was taken off guard.
It looks like a pretty good set-up for the Addison show. I really hope that does well for one reason and one reason only. Tim Daly needs a freaking break!!! He is awesome and I've liked ALL of his shows since Wings and none of them have taken off for some reason (no pun intended).

I absolutely loved Alex in this episode. His rapport with the actress who plays Jane Doe was simply amazing. When Bailey came back after maternity leave and turned in soft, motherly Bailey, it's like she became a different character. Yet Alex somehow became soft, sweet, and sensitive while completely remaining himself. Whoever wrote the scenes with Alex and Jane/Ava deserve major props.
I had to feel bad for both Addison and Meredith. I love Addison, and they set up her departure pretty well. Hey, there's obviously nothing left for her in Seattle. At least she got some scorching-hot s*x before packing up. As for Meredith, OUCH! What Derek said must have felt like a 2x4 across the forehead.
I'm sorry, but I just don't feel sorry for Callie. Just did a search for He's Just Not That Into You on Amazon. If you order it now, you can get it by Monday. OK, even if Izzie complied with Callie's desperate plea, what the heck makes Callie think that George will start getting her and needing her??
Random notes ... So after all the hoops that the attendings jumped through, will the Chief withdraw his resignation and continue on as Chief? With Addison gone, will Mark leave too? Or will they somehow, some way effect a reconciliation between the two former best friends? After all, Mark doesn't really have a family; Derek was his only family. And Derek doesn't have Meredith or Addison any more. Looking at next week's preview, what the heck is up with Meredith's dad slapping her in the face??

George can't leave! I wonder how all that will play out... I am excited for the spin off with Addison. At first I didn't want it, but will all the great actors they have cast, it should be pretty good. I am hoping for a Jane/Ava and Alex hook up once she is released from the hospital. There is some chemistry there! Maybe once Addy leaves. I can see Alex turning into the doting husband and father. I can't wait for next week!

Such a great recap and such a great episode! I have to say that I have been a bit turned off by Grey's of late, but this episode...I think it may be the first one this season that I will watch again. I agree with Dave in his post when he kept thinking of Mitch Pileggi as Skinner. I actually thought during one scene, "That Skinner is a pompous ass!" No matter, however. I still love seeing Pileggi on screen, Skinner or not. Anyway, the writing in this episode reminded me of the first season -- it was fresh and exciting!

Yes George, "The wife always knows."
And thankfully Callie knows something's up. Of course she doesn't yet know what, but George, Callie knows.
Loved Bailey's and the Chief's exchange at the end of the show about the fact that "there's always going to be a fish up a man's penis."

I love this show but this episode seemed to go too far in drawing out the parallels betweens the patients and doctor's, just a little too neat. "The wife always knows." to George? A little too neat. I guess it felt like it was trying to hard to set up for next week.
I get the complexity behind McSteamy's "failure". As some of you have noted, he did it - in part - because he cares for Addison, but I think he did it more out of selfish motives, to protect his heart. Being the dumper instead of the dumpee seems more in line with who his character really is.
I'm not sure I understand why Alex spurned Addison and why he had to be so cruel about it. I mean, we know he can be a jerk, but we also know that he is attracted to Addison on more than just a sexual level.

that was a great episode!
Addison- she's my fav! Addison and alex- that closet thing was great but i can't believe he was so cruel to her, she really likes him and i truely think he likes her back, but refuses to be one of those "man whore interns". Addison and McSteamy- i never really thought they could actually be a legit couple. I think after seeing her with alex, he realized he wasn't the one for her and gave her the easy way out. which was sweet. Christina and Burke- They bothj picked the same cake not knowing hat eachother thught. When burke was w/izzie i'm thinking that the whole cake talk was referring to Christina being the perfect "cake" for him, and when christina told him she liked the "red one" i think that was referring to him .( that was confusing i hope you get it) Derek and Mereidth- along with addiison derek doesn't know what he wants either, he knows he wants mer but he's confused and frustrated. mer should have told him about the heaven thing, he would have understood better. Callie- i think she'll be the one leaving. probably with addison, they seem close and neither one of them have someone holding them back, well except george but i don't think he's gonne do to much for callie. and callie will find out eventually, and i think Addison will tell her. I think it clicked in and she realized who izzie was talking about when she told her she slept w/ someone. all in all that was a good episode. and i can't wait til thursday.

Well, I felt AWFUL for my girl Addie!! Two rejections in one day and she goes home alone! I'll glady take her! Very sad for Addie! Alex could've been a wee bit more sensitive.
Der & Mer -- wow! Granted her "I'm communicating" every 2 seconds bugged the stuff out of me, but damn Derek, I expected more!
Can't stand Sidney either! Someone hit her with a 2X4! Please!!! She won't get Chief Resident over my other girl Miranda Bailey! Nuh-uh!! And YES, she does take them cake (literally & figuratively)!!
George & Izzie still bug me! I can't believe they cheated on Callie! UGH! I like them as friends and they do have some bond, but come ON! I do feel bad for Callie.
How cute are Burke & Xtina?? I love them and I think I like them over every other couple on Grey's. The cake thing was hilarious and Burke being the confidante to both Izzie & Derek was just awesome! GO BURKTINA!!!

A good episode overall. I like Addison and Alex finally hooking up. Its about time! To bad shes leaving. I feel like Alex did what he did at the end because of what Ava said to him about him being the guy he pretends not to be. It was a way of him going back to his bad boy self image. I hate the George Izzie storyline. It was perfectly fine when Callie was jealous with how close they were. The sex just makes the whole thing icky. I'm in the camp of people who really love Callie and I think right now I'd love to see her leave with Addison for LA. I really like the friendship thats developed between the two. I also love that Callie was the Christina of her class with those crazy cards. Please don't let Sara Ramirez leave the Grey's world. Sloan finally did something noble by letting Addison go. Finally, The Meredith Derek thing. I really hope this is the end for a while. I loved the way he phrased it. I don't know if i can breathe for you anymore. Such a great line. I personally found Meredith really annoying tonight and probably would have dumped her if she was doing the garbage she was doing about "communication." that wasn't communication that was freaking annonying! I think I like the episodes where Meredith gets hurt cuz i dont like her.
Can't wait for next week. I'm looking forward to the Spinoff more nad more. I love addison's character and with such a great supporting cast this show could be hot and maybe better the grey's. Hey addison take Callie with you!

Thank you genniel - no, you weren't imagining it, and I went WTF?!, too - but I think it was hright hand in the frame as he pulled down his pants. That's what it looked like to me when I rewound it.
I don't think Derek's being fair to Meredith being that she still came back to him and forgave him for getting back together with Addie, but, face it, that must be pretty tough to love someone and know that they practically attempted suicide by inaction. Talk about pressure. He has to save lives every day - he shouldn't also have to constantly worry about keeping Meredith alive, too, when she doesn't feel like it. It makes infinite more sense to me than the cop-out "I came out here to be chief" speech.

Addison/Alex exchange=super burn! Was it that terrifying to him to be one of the "good ones"? Yikes. Callie=denial George's feelings about Izze=more denial Izzie's exchange with Burke=desperate need for a friend Christina, we know you don't want to plan a wedding, but holy moly, throw the man a bone, which you finally did, but geez...
