May 17, 2007: Didn't We Almost Have It All
I can't decide what I was most surprised about since I thought there were multiple shockers in this season's finale episode. So I will make a list of things that I did not see coming: — I did not expect Burke to call off the wedding. If anyone was going to put a stop to it, I thought it would've been Cristina. Apparently, Burke could tell Cristina just wasn't ready. — I did not expect George to be the only intern that didn't pass the exam. Alex would've been more predictable. — I did not expect Callie to be named new chief resident over Bailey. — I did not expect Izzie to (gag me) profess her undying love to George with hopes that he would reciprocate the feelings (once again, gag me).
While I'm on the subject of shockers, let me also list things that were more predictable and not shocking: — I was not surprised that Rebecca's husband Jeff finally showed up, and she wanted Alex to give her a reason to not return to her hubby. I was pleased that Jeff was played by Jason London, since I've always been a fan of those talented London twins. — I was not surprised that Alex first encouraged Rebecca to go back to Jeff: "He's a decent guy — I think you should stick with the decent guy." But I didn't think Addison was going to make him change his mind and regret letting Rebecca get away (with "you suck!" and "she'll always be Ava to you"). — I was not surprised that Adele's baby ended up being the Chief's. That was just more me being a romantic at heart and wishful thinker than something that was expected. Did I cry during that scene with Adele telling Richard he was the father after she lost the baby? You betcha. I had to pause my TiVo, walk to the bathroom and get a tissue. Bawled. My. Eyes. Out. Loretta Devine, you deserve an Emmy nomination for that scene alone. You were simply your last name! — I was not surprised (thanks to Scoop Brady, aka Michael Ausiello) that Chyler Leigh indeed was playing Lexie Grey (she was wearing black last week, so she was coming from her mother's funeral when Derek flirted with her at the bar). How typical for George to be the one to meet her as one of the new interns (he and Derek have always had similar taste in women). — I was not surprised that the fourth mountain climber's ax-in-head injury was done on purpose (ouch), but why was his friend Andy putting him "out of his misery"? — I was not surprised that the Chief didn't name Sloan or Burke or the "39 and alone" Addison as his replacement as chief of surgery, but what a perfect opening narration for Kate Walsh's sequel by James Pickens Jr.: "If you need a job to give you a life, you either need a new job or a new life." Or your own show, Wednesdays at 9pm/ET this fall on ABC. Maybe they can use that as a voiceover like Debbie Allen in the Fame opening: "You want dreams? You want fame? Well, fame costs!" — I liked that the Chief offered his position to Derek, and Derek said, "I'm not the best man for the job. You're the best man for the job. Go on. Be the best man."
Oh, my. I'm a list-a-holic... I'm on a roll and can't stop! Here are my favorite moments:
— Burke practicing his wedding vows during surgery in front of a room full of approving women, including Izzie and then Addison's reaction: "Dump Yang and marry me!" — I was glad Derek told Meredith he was "in this" but gave Meredith the ultimatum: "Please end this if you don't see a future with us. Put me out of my misery." — Loved when Callie told Izzie: "I was named chief resident" and that she and George decided to have a baby. I was waiting for Callie to add: "So there, bitch." Earlier, I enjoyed when Callie told George about her yearnings of "housing a human for nine months" and that George replied with: "There's a guy with an ax in his head" and walked out. — Looks as though Joe and Walter will get their new twins from the birth mother Serena. — Meredith's best line was when she morphed into Cristina, as though the tables were turned: "Stop whining! This is your wedding day. You will go down that aisle and you will get married. If I have to kick your ass every step of the way to get you there, you will walk down the aisle, you will get married. You hear me, Cristina? We need this. We need you to get your happy ending." Cristina: "OK, I'm ready." Too bad Meredith's valiant efforts were for naught. — That scene between Bailey and George when she apologized to him that he failed the test: "Did I fail you?" George: "No. I failed you." Bailey grabbing George's arm made me cry again. — Can we say "Emmy moment" with Sandra Oh's final scene when Cristina realized Burke had moved out? "I'm free! Take this off," as she tearfully removed the Burke family heirloom choker and her tight wedding dress.
And here's my short list of complaints: — Can you imagine how hilarious the visual would have been with Cristina walking in without eyebrows had it not been shown in last week's previews and all the promos? Yes, it was funny when we first saw it, but think of how much funnier it would've been if they hadn't given us a sneak peek? — More Diahann Carroll, please. Don't waste a TV legend by giving her only a few quick scenes.

I actually hated the show. I wasn't surprised by any of it. I am really disappointed that once again, Merideth and Derek are in limbo. After watching last night's episode, I hope that Derek moves on and let's us all out of our misery. I don't even care if it's with Merideth's sister. It wasn't surprising that Derek won the position, but who in their right mind would turn it down?? Please.... ANd George failing the test? It serves him right for cheating on his wife. Izzie confessing her love was disguisting. She should have respect for her "best friend's" marriage. How quickly she got over Denny... Burke had to call off the wedding. He knew Cristina wasn't ready, and after listening to his vows, and then hearing what the chief thought of him, it put it all into perspective for him. Of course I saw that coming. About Adele and the Chief, I'm just sorry about her miscarriage, glad they'll get back together. We knew Alex wouldn't give rebecca a reason to saty, he's not a stand up kind of guy. By far the best moment of the show, and an emmy award winning moment, better than any Meredith scene this season, was Cristina at the end. All I can saw about that seen was WOW. Shandra, I don't think I'll be watching anymore. You took a brilliant show and turned it into a cheesy predictable soap opera.

Loved this episode. Is it to much to ask for Christina and Meredeth to go on the honeymoon together. Girl power and all. As busy as Burke & Christina are, there should have been some kind of trip. Although with there personalities, they'd probably only have time to take a trip to the corner store.

First I have to say that Grey's is one of my favorite shows.
Now, I don't know what I felt about this episode. I was...not bad...but not good. It was, I don't know. Not really interesting, except from a few excellent scenes. I don't understand why they keep giving us so many reasons not to like Meredith, who is the one we are suppose to identify with. Drowning...walking away from derek countless of times...and so on. Im so annoyed at her.
And I was thinking at the end, did Christina feel relived when she said I'm free, like she didn't want to get married to Burke, or did she just say it because she was so sad about him moving out. I didn't get if she was happy or sad.

One thing that's always confused me is if Callie is a resident on the same level as Bailey, WHY doesn't she have her own interns???
After they showed that Callie was Chief Resident (which I kind of expected -- giving it to Bailey was too obvious and it makes the conflicts more complicated for George), I thought of a completely ridiculous idea that I fell in love with over the course of the episode. I really wanted Bailey to lose Chief Resident because Richard wanted her to skip over being an attending and be made Chief of Surgery, even though I know that was impossible. Even if it was some contrived way that she was made interim chief while the attendings had a chance to prove themselves, or something. Oh well.
So I guess every season finale will have one of our main characters leaving the hospital only to return after a few episodes. Last year it was Izzy's "I thought I was a surgeon, and I'm not" and now it's poor George's failing intern exam. Sure, now he says he's leaving, but who honestly thinks he won't reconsider and redo his intern year? I would just be interested to see who his intern is. But not quite as excited as I am to see whose intern Meredith's sister is. How cheesy if Meredith finds out her sister that she hasn't met yet (because she was uninvited to her step mother's funeral) is working in the hospital because she's her resident.

LoriK27 - I had that exact same thought about Bailey (make her Chief!) even though I knew it wouldn't happen. I really liked the finale. I thought they were able to hit on a lot of stories without it feeling too busy or rushed. My only complaint is that I wish they would have done more with Bailey (having the Chief explain why he passed her over). Otherwise, I enjoyed the show and can't wait for next season.

How could Adele's baby be Richard's? They have not been together all season?
Also, just all around disappointed with how the ep ended. Is there one main character on the show who didn't suffer some sort of setback/loss? I know it's a drama, but does everyone have to be miserable? I look forward to next season, mainly to see whether Burke or George is back, but I expect all the main characters to be as depressing as the weather in Seattle.

i personally thought the epi was great-i thought it was way better than last season's "cliffhanger" (McDreamy or McVet- seriously?) I thought it would have been more surprising if Burktina ended up getting married, they were obviously building up to not making it. And, as usual, Mer's looking for signs and was willing to let her relationship go with McDreamy just becuase Burktina didn't get married! Anway, i can't wait until next season! I think Shonda did a great job of setting it up but I do think that Mer has to get happy or take some happy pills (prozac anyone?)- seriously, how many sad things can happen to her?!
PS. The line with Christina at the end was "I'm free. Damn it. DAMN IT!" so she was pretty devastated- can't wait to see that first meeting between them.
PPS. you're a crybaby Dave

I hated this episode. It was one of the few shows that I look forward to watching, but not anymore.
Grey's is one of the most uneven shows -- it has moments of great emotion played out be exceptional actors with surprising and well written scenarios. It also has great medical dramas (though with little regard to actual medicine but I don't care so much about that).
However, this season ender, as many episodes this season, created drama by making everybody act out of character with little regard to the actual history. How could Burke make the (really great) "I'm sure" speech and not give Christina 5 minutes to compose herself. Other than her mom dying and then her step-mom dying (which was over-the-top) and her dad being a jerk, how has Meredith left Derek? Drama created out of nothing.
I was less moved by the Ava scenes with Alex than I expected. and Izzy and George is a big yuck.
The show needs some new blood, because we can't see manufactured drama with the same cast over and over again. Seasons 1 and 1/2 were pretty good and only slightly inconsistent. This season just hasn't been good at all.

Meredith. She has no one to blame but herself.
I couldn't believe they had Meredith leave Derek hanging like that after he professes his love. I get that she's flawed and dysfunctional but enough it enough already! Pick me. Choose me. Love me. to this? Blech.

Well, no secret, I've been really unhappy with the show recently but I have to say last night was excellent. I'll definitely be watching in the fall.
Der and Mer are destined to end up together. This is just a little more angst. I just really hope that Derek is not going to become attached to Lexie and I hope that Mer is not going to end up having a fling with Mark who is now womanless. What are they going to do with Mark next year? But whatever, there's no doubt in my mind that Mer and Der will end up together eventually. So I'm not worried.
Burke and Christina are another story. I think they may be finished. Its going to be interesting next year to see who moves on first, and with whom.
I'm still not happy with the George/Izzie situation. And I've got to say I felt a little manipulated last night. Maybe I'm dead wrong about this but I almost wonder if the writing team let Callie take Miranda's rightful place as Head Resident to make her a little less sympathetic so the adulterous ones don't look quite so bad. Maybe I'm just a little paranoid but that was my first thought and all I can say is that IF that was the plan: HA-HA IT didn't work. I still think Izzie and George are pond scum.
And finally, I just wanted to cry when Alex walked out on Ava. And then he went back and she was gone. So sad, so sad, so sad. I get that he is deep and dark and all twisted inside but he needs a woman, already. Its been two years. I hope next season Alex finally gets a girl.
Altogether, a fabulous season finale. I'm personally relieved because the last couple of months have not been fabulous in my opinion but they definitely kicked off a better season four last night.

I think Christina said damn it damn it after I free because she realized it was not what she really wanted. I do not believe it has been that long in Grey's Anatomy time so the baby could be richard's.
I had really had enough of Izzie. I was so glad when Callie gave her that verbal slapped. It was the LEAST of what Izzie deserved in my opinion. Callie has been putting up with her disrespect for far too long.
George gets some blame here to. He needs to grow a spine. Maybe failing his exams will wake him up. He needs to take control of his life and either stay with Callie or leave her. If he really wants to be with Callie then he needs to distance himself from Izzie.

Are we supposed to take from George failing the exam that he still hasn't recovered from his father's death? Meredith was in no shape to take the exam the first go around. George hasn't been George for awhile since his dad died. He upped and got married to someone he who he had been broken up with two weeks before. He has been on a downward spiral and no one notices because he is George. He is the one who helps everyone else. Who helps him? His wife is too self-absorbed in her own desires. His best friend had been in a depression herself. Meredith is a wreck. Bailly's got so much going on. Alex and Christina are emotionally stunted people. And the rest? Not much help either.
