Episode Recap: "Freshman Daze"
If you’re like me, every time you watch Greek questions linger in the back of your mind: How did someone like Casey ever fall for someone like Cappie? What were the upper classmen like as freshman? Was Frannie always so mean? Well, tonight all of your questions are answered.
As the all-Greek ball approaches, Evan, Ashleigh, Casey and Cappie can’t help but recall their freshman experiences—despite their aims to forget. It turns out Evan and Cappie were best buddies from summer camp. Sporting a vintage shirt and a creepy, Spencer-like blonde beard (that’s a Hills reference for you non-MTVers) Evan was determined to shed his “rich boy” image and join the coolest party frat on campus, Kappa Tau. (You read that correctly. Don’t worry, I had to replay that scene too to make sure I wasn’t crazy.) Cappie ends up being a superstar pledge whereas Evan is a “bing.” Not only did Cappie outshine Evan at KT, he stole the cute girl Evan met at a party, Casey Cartwright (so that’s how they met). He can’t get the girl, he can barely get into the frat—turns out Evan was kind of awkward freshman year.
Frannie has been hanging around the ZBZ house doing laundry and trying her best to be nice to Casey, making Casey think back to her freshman rush experience. Call me a sucker for a sentimental sisterhood speech, but Frannie seemed genuine in caring for Casey then (and now, aw man now who will be the ZBZ mean girl?) Despite Frannie’s best efforts, Casey is still giving her Big Sis the cold shoulder
On a side note: Calvin seems to be getting a long well back at Omega Chi, he’s even cracking gay date jokes.
More flashbacks show us that Cappie got sucked into frat life (even though Evan had to drag him to rush) and never had much time to hang out with Casey—I guess it was bros and cheesoritos before hos even back then. Evan walked Casey home from a Cappie karaoke night and we saw the sparks flying then and there. The disappointment continued for Casey the night of the ball when Cappie was too busy pre-partying to pick her up. Frannie, we learn, marched over to the KT house and yelled at Cappie (and made Egyptian Joe cry in the process). Though Cappie got his act together, Evan had already saved Casey’s night and the two were dancing awfully close for friends, if you catch my drift. Cappie got angry, the two boys fought and we all know what happened after that. I guess if you’re going to steal your best friend’s girlfriend, you’ve got to do it in style by ruining a formal event. (Go big or go home, right?)
Cappie learns from his past mistakes and shows up at ZBZ looking sharp to pick up Rebecca. After learning about what Frannie did Casey has a Hallmark moment and invites Frannie to come to the ball with her and Ashleigh. By the way, how much laundry does this girl have? She’s been folding her clothes the entire episode.
So all of these touching moments, blasts from the past and bad facial hair all lead up to the worst ending ever. Casey and Evan both reach for the same champagne glass, Evan lets go, stares at Casey and then walks away without saying anything. Cappie looks over at Casey, acknowledging her presence and that’s about it. What a freaking let down.
The only thing that made up for that horrible anti-climactic ending was the preview for next week’s episode: The Casey-Evan confrontation! True, the preview was all of 30 seconds, but from what I saw Casey made a good point: Evan never gave her the second chance she gave him…and he wants her back? OMG!
Despite a disappointing ending, this episode was full of some of the funniest lines and moments I’ve seen all season:
-Cappie calls the ball “Prom Part II.” Rusty’s disappointed answer: “Well, I didn’t have a prom part I” -Dale’s USAG ball: a night of sin-free fun, complete with line dancing and subtle proselytizing -Dale recalls ending a friendship over Catholicism “Mass? You’re dead to me!” -Beaver’s hair freshman year -Frannie yells at Egyptian Joe about not hiding out in college to dodge the draft and a minimum-wage job. He (literally) cries, “I got nowhere else to go!” -Rusty’s freakish research/stalker skills astonish Cappie “I’m start, this is what I do”
This episode had too much going on for you all not to say something. Who loved this flashback? Who was happy to see Casey come around to Frannie? Who hated the ending as much as I did? Who would have gone to Dale’s USAG ball? Who wants to see more Egyptian Joe?

Isn't that rebecca logan's job? I was so sad for Casey when cappie came to pick up rebecca. And another episode with Calvin and Rusty NOT being friends. I didn't like it. I think Cappie will be the one who helps them get over the pranks.
I thought this episode was kinda boring, with all the flashbacks, but it was interesting in that it explained some stuff, it just left rusty pretty much out of the episode.
Did you ever watch Undeclared? The guy who plays Joe was in an episode.
I really don't want evan and casey to get back together. He can be nice, but I don't like the way he treated her and I don't like how he treats rusty. I want them to bring in someone new for casey. And ashleigh too.

It was good for some back story on how the characters got to this point. I noticed in an earlier epsiode that Cappie called Evan "Bing" and it was obviously a shot at Evan by his reaction. Tonight at least explained that tidbit.
Dale's flashback was the funniest.
Calvin and Rusty need to start hanging out again and soon.

Do you remember which episode this was? I don't remember that. But I also missed the evan longoria joke last week until someone pointed it out.

Although we didn't get to see a lot of Rusty & Clavin the back story of Cappie & Evan mirrors the Rusty/Calvin current friendship. I think Cappie will help R/C regain the friendship they had and not let it go the way of C/E.
I did notice that Evan was so into the whole I don't want to be known as EVAN CHAMBERS but he had no problem name dropping to Egyptian Joe at the rush party when he was starving for attention.
Glad to see Cappie learned his lesson. I know I'm probably in the minority but I really like Cappie & Rebecca together. I noticed Rebecca didn't rub the Cappie thing in Casey's face when Cappie picked her up or at the dance. I think she has genuine feelings for Cappie & I hope he doesn't do something stupid. So far so good.
Loved Beavers hair. OMG! I had to pause & laugh at that.

It was the episode where the ZBZ & KT's had their Speak Easy party. Cappie said it to Evan after Cappie came out of the security station. 2 episodes ago I think. The nickname was a combo of "bid" and "ding" since Evan was only in because of Cappie.

I loved the episode (yay for flashbacks ... reminds me of Veronica Mars), but I have to agree the ending was a let down. I liked seeing the Evan/Cappie/Casey thing from freshman year, it finally let us in on the past.
However, the ending was lame and I was kinda hoping Cappie would have danced with Casey at the dance to make up for his stupid behavior freshman year.
My favorite quote: "It's a ball. Like a testicle. I don't want to go to a testicle." (Or something along those lines).
The episode made me feel for Frannie, but not for Evan. Especially after the jab he took at Cappie's parents.
However I love we got more backstory on that too, thanks to Rusty. Speaking of Rusty, I hope he and Calvin will be alright. Cappie, as a great big electron should, will take care of it. I know it.
But really lame ending. I can't stand the Evan/Casey pairing, but I know it's going to be inevitable. I'll have to put up with it until Cappie and Rebecca finally break up. Though I must admit I like the cute happy relationship Cappie. Too back it's with Rebecca.

I loved the Frannie/Casey interaction at the end. But this whole episode really hit home that all the crap the guys talk about Casey isn't always true. I mean we're always given the crap about Casey treating Cappie like crap, and "Poor Cappie." Now it's more like "Poor Casey" and "Poor Evan!" And that last one is one thing I swore I'd never say.
It had to hurt to see a grown up Cappie actually surprising Rebecca for the Greek ball. I mean the ending was just the ultimate heartbreak for Casey. It's just not fair. I wanted to reach in and give her a hug.

Why do you feel bad for Evan?! He kinda in a way stole Casey from Cappie. I mean, he offered to take her to the first ball, knowing what he was doing. Then, he lost her by cheating on her with Rebecca. I don't see why you'd feel sorry for him.

Great episode! I'm so glad they had a flashback episode. Love that Cappie and Evan had a previous relationship, but you just knew that had to be since they HATE each other so much. Interesting that Cappie caused the breakup between he and Casey by ignoring her, and Evan was there to be with her. I didn't find it back-stabby of Evan; I found it genuine that their friendship turned to more serious feelings. About Frannie . . . I love the scene where she goes to straighten out Cappie, and ends up frightening all the KTs. She is ferocious! I'm sure she and Casey will make up for a bit, but this is Greek and it won't last long! I'm ok with Evan and Casey working things out. Yes, he hurt her. That happens in many relationships, especially in college. In the end, though, my money's on Cappie.
Go Greek! (BTW-I totally squealed when I saw Evan with his little goatee! Awful!)

i liked this epi. alot
loved the flashbacks answered some questions
i dont think that evan really stole casey in the begening. he talked to her first then cappie saw her after. then he was jsut being a jerk so i dont think evan was really wrong.
it seemed like frannie really is trying. glad casey finally warmed up to her.
but if i recal back in the episdoe where rebeccca does the physc test on cappie it mentions he has a real name (not just cappie) so i figured that cappie was his name name for kappa tau, but it seems like he had the name before he was in the frat. hm...
as much as i like casey and cappie together for now i think cappie and rebecca are good together. he brings out her nice side in her but it looks like evan and casey are getting back together. which is fine by me since i cant decided who i like her better with.
anyways good episode. i enjoyed it. next week looks great

I LOVED this episode. It truly felt like the most realistic episode yet to college life with all the flashbacks. I remember during my rush period watching the various sororities putting on sketches to impress the potential new members just as well as I remember being on the other side and trying to create new sketches that reflected the current media (loved that they did Grey's which had just started and was HUGE when Casey was pledging). Frannie's speech to Casey really won me over, I remember writing a speech like that and they're not something you normally bs. LOVED Ashleigh's big "protecting her from boys" too funny.
I want to trust Frannie, but I'm still a little iffy. I'm leaning more towards Evan for Casey, I think Cappie had his chance and majorly blew it. Evan kinda did too... but what are the odds of Casey winding up with a new character who hasn't yet hurt her?

I can't believe no one's mentioned the laundry yet. It wasn't ALL Frannie's laundry. She was on "Laundry Detail". It was referred to in a note from her to Casey earlier in the Epi. Since she was on probation she was folding everyone ELSE'S landry.
Dale's flashback was definately the best. I had to rewind it and watch it twice it was so funny!

I understand that Cappie made some stupid mistakes with Casey, but she never confronted him about it to tell him to change which I'm sure he would have knowing how much he cares for her, and I understand Evan liking Casey seeing as how he saw her first but that comment about Cappie's parents was messed up and out of line. But Casey was more messed up when after the fight Evan said what about Cappie and she just says what about him. I mean the guy was a freshman just joinin a frat clearly his priorities were outta whack she could of tried to tell him.
Casey has to realize how much better Cappie is then Evan considering what she did to Cappie in the end was so much worse than what she did to Evan (not to mention he cheated on her which Cappie probably would never do) because Evan has treated her like crap ever since.
Plus I love how Cappie learned from his mistakes with Casey so he shown that hes matured and realized what he did wrong with her and won't do it again

I have to say that I rather enjoyed the ending. It would have been way too easy and cheesy for everyone to come "full circle" and be friends again. To me, it was the perfect way of showing that, while some things are better, not everything is as it once was, and some things, like the severity of their comments towards each other and the ensuing fistfight are hard, if not impossible, to undo.
