November 19, 2006: I've Got the Music In Me

I've never been a fan of the whole "pop/rock guest star" sweeps stunt on dramatic or comedic TV shows — don't we see enough of Britney? Well, if the guest star was somebody like 30 Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto, maybe I would have a change of heart. But I swear, it's because he's also a good actor. (Cough)

When I saw this week's Ghost Whisperer previews, I was excited that this episode would have a musical twist. (I'm in a band myself, so I like stories that revolve around music.) However, the cynicism kicked right in at those ominous words: "Guest-starring 'N Sync's J.C. Chasez!" Are you kidding me? But in all fairness, Mark Wahlberg was once a New Kid, and now he's a great actor and acclaimed producer (Entourage). So I elected to open my mind and just let this week's episode roll... er... rock.

Wow, "Joshua Chasez" is a decent actor. Who knew? Now, the Ghost Whisperer team was smart to keep him out of the spotlight and stick to a smaller role. If he wasn't a very good actor, we still wouldn't know it, and the show hasn't lost its credibility. Good call, GW team. I think I just might be open to more pop/rock guest stars on my shows. Maybe. It hasn't quite reached "two great tastes that taste great together" possibilities, but... I'm open. Casting Jared Leto could help.

Okay, enough about dark, dreamy, blue-eyed, multitalented crossover stars, and on to the one who does the crossing over and (at long last) who may soon get found out by Delia! It's so great that Delia's son, Ned, found Melinda out, but I'm also glad that the writers aren't showing all of Mel's cards too soon. The start of that journey is enough for me, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. Jim (McHottie), a perfect role model for Ned, was "man of the episode" by intervening on Mel's behalf, sharing his own story of loss and offering to be a friend to Ned. I would love to see that relationship develop too.

This week's tear-jerker award goes to Delia. I really, really felt for her as she mourned the loss of Charlie on his birthday. I also loved seeing Jim in a great scene with her this time around.

As far as the haunting, I found this week's to be one of the more interesting stories, and I enjoyed the "good ghost, bad ghost" mystery. Looks like the last musician-ghost standing may come back, too? Maybe my fantasy about a Jared Leto guest appearance isn't so far-fetched? ;)

I wonder if anyone else has trouble with supporting guest actors jumping from show to show. For example, when it showed Delia's late husband, all I could think was that she was married to the yellow-eyed demon from Supernatural.

Firstly, I'd like to tell you that Mark Wahlberg was never a "New Kid". DONNIE Wahlberg was. Mark Wahlberg was Marky Mark the rapper.

Secondly, I'd like to know if I'm the only one who's afraid that Jim isn't going to make it through the season? Why do I say that? When Melinda was talking to Jay Mohr's Character and he mentioned that doves dying in or near someone's home means a death in the family that lives in the house, flash back to a dove dying outside their house, I immediately thought "they're going to kill Jim". That and the fact that if Melinda does lose Jim, it'd be the perfect way for her and Delia to bond. I however, will freak out completely if I'm right. I love Jim and will not recover if they kill him. I'm still mourning the loss of Andrea.

StupidGroundhog, I totally agree. I'm very worried for Jim. The dove thing totally made me panic a little as well. Though, didn't that dove actually live and fly away? I can't remember.

I, too, was going to mention that Donnie not Mark was a New Kid. Donnie was great on Boomtown and good in the short-lived Runaway on CW.

I really hope they don't kill of Jim. He's the ideal TV husband (much like Jim Dubois on Medium) - so caring, understanding, gorgeous... I love that she has him to come home to after dealing w/ghosts all day.

I'm not a big Camryn Manheim fan but I am really enjoying her character on this show.

The best part of the show is Melinda and Jim, so hopefully they'll just stick with that. David Conrad is awesome on this show. Also, greymatters - I totally kept thinking 'OMG Camryn's married to the yellow-eyed Demon from Supernatural!' And that casting is especially odd considering that the week before Jason Gedrick guest-starred on both Supernatural and Ghost Whisperer...

I hope they don't kill off Jim. He really does balance out the show and that balance is a pretty strong reason the show makes it. At least it does from my point of view.

Jeannine-I'm with you on the Jared Leto thing-yum!

Actually, Mark was a New Kid for a short time, along with his brother Donnie Wahlberg. He then parted ways with New Kids for a solo career as "Marky Mark." It's in his bio here at tvguide.com and at Wikipedia. 'Dis girl checks her facts, yo! ;)

Oh, and I concur that Donnie was excellent in the series Boomtown. He was also absolutely AMAZING in the movie Dreamcatcher [Stephen King]... so they both are great actors, those two Wahlberg brothers.

Wow... for whatever reason, the dove omen didn't really stand out to me beyond the musician storyline... now you've all got me worried about Jim... again! :(

Now I'm feeling really guilty that I ever brought up the "killing off Jim" scenario a while back. You guys are all biting your nails, looking at everything as a sign, and now you have ME uber-worried, too. I'm sorry!

And Angel, I also thought the dove came back and flew away or something like that. But, if not...couldn't they also be referring to Andrea when Jay Mohr's character was referring to someone close to you dying? I don't remember him saying exactly someone in that house. Am I wrong?

Spikelover - I, too, think of Alison's husband, Joe, on Medium! It's funny how the two best marriages on tv (imo, so please don't bash me) are on two supernatural series. These are supportive, endearing, strong couples who communicate, admit mistakes, and work things out on a daily basis. They're not perfect and they don't pretend to be. That's why I always liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Supernatural mysteries, but with a strong basis in truth and real issues and exceptionally written characters. I think THAT'S what connects people to these shows. They sometimes make more sense than the realistic dramas.

I don't think it's a mistake to worry about "Jim" being killed off. Remember last TV season when just about every show had a major character biting the dust? I hope television writers/producers/directors have purged that particular impulse from their system for now. A little tension/unpredictability is good, but too much is alienating to viewers. But like a lot of the posters here, I see "Jim" as essential to Ghost Whisperer. I mean, if "Melinda" were to lose her husband, where is she going to find someone so believing, supportive, helpful, and understanding again? "Jim" has set the bar pretty high and lighting isn't likely to strike twice in a relationship where a psychic is constantly visited by ghosts in her home, work, and at play. Not having a husband to confide in, to talk to, and to brainstorm with would completely change the dynamic of what "Melinda" does on a weekly basis. I'm hoping that this season's reliance on David Conrad and his character means that GW's production team realizes the chemistry between the two actors and how much it humanizes JLH's character. We see her being funny, loving, insecure, grumpy -- it balances the whole "I see dead people" aspect of the show.

First off let me say Thank You to Jeannine for using my 'McHottie' for Jim :) I was so excited to see it used in an official TV Guide blog. :)

As for the dove. Didn't that dove happen when the whole plan crash thing from last season, the one that killed Andrea? I got a little anxious about it too before I remembered that. The dead dove symbolizes some in the house or some close to the people in the house and Andrea was very close to Melinda. Also the dove didn't come back to life I think it just disappeared or they buried it.

Gotta go, getting off work. But I hope I was able to ease some minds out there

Everyone talked mostly about the relationship between Melinda and Jim, moreso than the show, but I have to agree, that Jim is the bomb, and I too couldn't bear it if they let him die. I didn't watch the episode with Andrea cause I didn't want to see the whole plane crash thing, then I was sorry I didn't watch it cause I didn't get the see Andrea for the final time. That must have been some episode with her going to the light, I am sure. I love both this show and Medium, and the two husbands are gorgeous. Anybody remembers the husband in medium in a Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode? He blew up a house with an unsuspecting girl and her boyfriend who had come back for a romp in the day, and he also killed a Canadian guy. It was all about a bank robbery and he was terrific in the episode. Forgot his real name though.

Found it. His name is Jake Weber, and he's gorgeous. Maybe we should have a poll between him and Conrad, Melinda's husband.
