November 10, 2006: I'm Singin' in the Rain

Living with an addiction to shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Battlestar Galactica can turn a TV fan into a nervous wreck these days, especially during November sweeps. These shows have been putting the "hang" in cliff-hanger lately, so I didn't really watch tonight's Ghost Whisperer in a relaxed, "Friday night TV" sort of fashion. I also happen to know that this Ghost Whisperer fan wasn't the only one on edge from this week's "a fire will tear them apart" promo. I feel silly admitting this, but I thought about all of you as the hour unfolded tonight. You have given me great comfort, as I've learned over the past couple of weeks that: 1) I'm not the only one who cries every week when I watch this show, 2) I'm not the only one who loves Jim and Melinda together, and 3) I'm also not the only one who would be about as heartbroken as Melinda if Jim ever left us.

All together now, let us pause for a moment and take a nationwide Ghost Whisperer-community collective sigh of relief: Deep breath in... now out... phew! Jim is still with us. It truly was just an overblown (pun intended) sweeps promo. Not only that, Jim proved even further tonight that he is indeed Mr. Wonderful. Can I call him McScreamy? Nah, doesn't have the same sexy something as McDreamy or McSteamy. McJim? I didn't think so.

This week was the first time the actual crossing-over scene wasn't what filled my tear ducts to full capacity. Although that moment was heartfelt and well-acted, it was Delia and Melinda's anniversary/husband talk at the store that got to me. It was so subtle and real, it reminded me of conversations that I've had with friends that turn into "that" moment. The one when friends reach beyond the words of shared advice and experiences and communicate so much more with the spaces in between the words. Applause to Jennifer Love Hewitt and Camryn Manheim for a truly great scene.

(And to the Ghost Whisperer powers-that-be, do I need to start my own campaign trail for Camryn Manheim? She's an award-winning actress that I know can be better utilized, and her scenes with J. Love are always so great. I know that I'm not the only one who's got "more Camryn Manheim" on my Ghost Whisperer wish list. I'll leave it at that... for now.)

As I continue my week, it is pretty much certain that if I see a hot-dog stand or a red umbrella, I may fall to pieces. Also, I absolutely knew there was no way Jim was about to forget their anniversary, but the way he remembered and surprised Melinda was so real. Of course, that tangible chemistry between J. Love and David Conrad definitely adds to that "real-couple" quality we love. It was a refreshing change this week to see a beautiful ending belong to Jim and Melinda alone on their special day, rain or shine.

(PS: Did anyone else notice that the street in Jesse's (Jason Gedrick) address had the word "Ash" in it? Nice touch).

I totally agree with the Melinda Jim thing. If they ever decide to get rid of Jim I'll drop this show like a hot potato. They are so well matched and understanding with each other.

the whole show was just so sweet. i cried the entire show. this has to be one of the best shows on television. i never miss an episode. jim and melinda are the best. i love how they keep adding layers to their relationship week after week. you really get involved in them. i love that. camryn manheim is also a nice addition to the show. week after week, i am really starting to care about her character and root for her to find happiness. i also like how they are taking the friendship between her and melinda slowly. it is very true to life.

I too liked this episode... and I too found myself all choked up, but I can't remember which scene it was. I still think that Camryn Manheim needs to do *something* with her hair- it just never looks flattering. Also, I know I've said this before too: I always get distracted by Melinda's eyelashes and her cleavage. Good thing this show isn't broadcast in 3-D 'cuz we'd all be jumpin' back, thinking those "pairs" were going to pop out of the screen at us. (I realize guys might not mind that, but still... both "sets" are kinda distracting. You'd think she'd get tired of flaunting her cleavage all around town.)

By the way, what was the point of the Jay Mohr character (Professor Payne) being in this episode? Are they trying to play up an angle of him being interested in Melinda? I'm not saying that he's not, but I think he's more fascinated by her questions than he is interested in her romantically.

And speaking of romance, the relationship between Melinda & Jim really does seem to be unique. Sometimes it seems a bit hokey, but then Jim will act like a typical guy & things will be better. But the love between these characters seems to shine through everything in this show, and that's a good thing.

Isn't Payne married?

I too really enjoyed this episode. I especially liked the flashback to how Melinda and Jim met. It was one of those chance encounters that turned into something so much more. I like how her abilities led the two of them together.

The slowly developing friendship between JLH and CM is very touching as well. The one moment with them talking about remembering anniversaries was subtle yet so powerful. This season just keeps getting better.

Maybe it was just me but .... given that Jim hadn't forgotten at all (as we expected) it felt a little cruel that he went so far as to ask "what's the reason" for the hot dog stand present. Maybe it was Melinda's over-emoting as if this was the most tragic thing in life (after all the sad things she sees with the ghosts, too!) but it felt like his apparant forgetfulness actually hurt her, rather than being light-hearted teasing.

I think the point of having Professor Payne around was just to show he is starting to suspect about Melinda & a reminder so no-one will be surprised when he takes a more major role in an episode (hopefully soon)

I totally loved how after the fire she took care of him and put him to bed. And all the corny jokes, so like a man. Still think the long nightgowns are too much. With a man that hunky? Pleease.

Now that my mind is at peace b/c Jim did not die in the fire I can go on w/a smile on my face for the week. :)

HEY I HAVE THE NAME FOR JIM!!

McHottie!!Get it? This episode and he is a fireman. Perfect :)

Maybe they think that the long nighties balance out the plunging necklines? ;)

I hope you're right about that, because I too would love to see Jay Mohr take on a more prominent role. He's always so fun to watch!

I was almost afraid to watch this episode for fear Jim was a goner. (I've had a little crush on him since "Relativity", which was cancelled too soon.) I could have sworn I had read something about David Conrad leaving (back over the summer), but thank goodness that doesn't seem to be true. I have been loving his more involved role. It works great having him help her with the ghostwhispering. I loved the ep where he had his own ghost to deal with.

I came into this show part way through last season and am atually glad that Aisha Taylor is gone and David has a more prominent role. He and JLH are great together and it's nice to see a loving, supportive, honest couple on TV.

Now, if we could just get those ridiculous eyelashes of hers to burn off. As distracting as the girls are, I kind of don't blame her b/c they're real. (Although I found myself thinking that it would be good for her to grow her hair a bit longer so it could cover her chest more.)
However, those lashes are so fake and ridiculous and over the top. She doesn't even take them off to sleep? Come on! JLH seems to where them all the time. I saw a repeat of the TV movie she did playing Audrey Hepburn. I thought it was just for that role but she's too have become attached (pun intended) to them.

As for Jay Mohr... I've never been a big fan of his. Something about him has bugged me in every role he's done. However, I am enjoying him as this character -- but keep it to small doses and give Carmen more time!
