Episode Recap: "Girlfriends"

Hi readers! Mario here. I’m a Flight fan and will be taking over the blog from now on, so I just thought I’d introduce myself. Now, on to the episode…

Mon dieu! Who knew what the desire for a croissant could do? In yet another smile-inducing episode, we first see our dynamic duo as they are peering into the window of a French pastry shop. Jemaine is craving a croissant, but when Bret says he doesn't like them, he becomes Jemaine’s wingman, à la Top Gun. Well, sort of. As they meet Lisa and Felicia at the checkout counter, the foursome is immediately transported to Gérard Depardieu-land, wearing striped shirts, riding bicyclettes, and singing happily about baguettes, Camembert cheese, and the soup du jour. If only amour could always be like this.

Leaving the French discotheque for an American bar, their first double date isn’t working for Jemaine, who asks Bret to swap Felicia for Lisa. He agrees, though it doesn’t help Jemaine get to first base. But an amorous Lisa can’t keep her hands off of a nervous-looking Bret. At a meeting the next day with manager Murray, he reminds them of the trouble caused by Coco and recommends that bands in general shouldn’t have girlfriends. The reason being that they could lose their fan base, which is why Wham! never had girlfriends. That Murray is so insightful!

Always looking for a promotion deal, Murray goes to the ghetto (and says it’s described exactly like an Elvis Presley song) and meets AJ Jones, who says he's the younger brother of record producer Quincy Jones, but curiously looks nothing like him. While paying for a stereo system that isn’t there, Murray plays a Conchords demo when AJ says he’s also a record manufacturer. (And also sells hot pants.) After purchasing two-and-a-half thousand CDs, sales were slower than he liked, having sold just a single disc to our one and only favorite fan, Mel. That was probably a good thing since they turned out to be blank rewritable discs, which our friend Dave took off his hands. At least he didn’t try to sell the boxes that were filled with sawdust.

Back for a second double date, the dudes still aren’t having fun. Jemaine sports a sleeveless shirt to impress Felicia, but it's Bret who is being shy and tells Lisa he usually waits three years before bringing a girl up to his apartment. Lisa cons her way into his apartment but not into his pants when she pounces on Bret, who is lying on the sofa. This leads to a very sweet song about playing tonsil hockey, which doesn’t mean you get to score the goal.

Though Bret sings that exploring the mouth is no expedition to the south, their friend Dave says he doesn’t know how the guys do it back home in Europe, but over here we show them the sausage. (I don’t even want to think about his reference to getting egg rolls from Mrs. Chang means.) When Lisa tells Bret she's leaving to fight in Iraq the next day, he falls for the pastry chef-sniper and follows Dave’s advice. But chef Lisa only wanted Bret for his hot cross buns. Feeling sad and used, he should have listened to his own lyrics: "A kiss is not a contract, but it’s very nice."

I think you did a great recapping job Mario! Keep up the great work :)

I'm glad this show will continued to be blogged about, and who better to do it than one of the fans?

I think my three favorite moments were:
1. Jemaine taking off his jacket to reveal the sleeveless shirt.
2. Jemaine asking Bret if his girlfriend hit him when Bret was describing her as being to forward
3. And at the very end when that other girl came up to them stating that she heard Bret liked to have a good time and Jemaine leaned forward and said "I'm Bret"

Awesome all away around in this episode.

Oh yeah, and of course Eugene w/ his whole sink repair? Nice! :)

I almost choked on my milk and cookies when Jemaine mumbled under his breath that he was in the bathroom first and Bret came in and got in the shower with all his clothes on.

Who knew that Bret was such an innocent?

Oh, if anyone was wondering why Murray had his old computer this week, I got this off the FOTC myspace page (they did a commonly asked question blog):

Q: Sometimes it seems like the episodes on your show are our of order. Are they?
A: You know how this weekend Murray had a new computer? Next week he will have his old computer. The week after he will have his new computer. Then he will have is old computer. Yes. Some of them are out of order.

Thanks for checking that out, Amy. I did notice Murray not using his computer but thought he was avoiding it since the leggy blonde was gone.

I'm still smiling when thinking about the French song "Foux Da Fa Fa!" Baguette! :)
