Episode Recap: "The Third Conchord"

It's hard to believe that 12 weeks ago I was a newbie to Flight of the Conchords and now am a full-fledged fan. Should I get a T-shirt or a cap? The best part about having a first-season finale is that there will be a second season. Here's to next summer!

In Murray's meeting, item No. 1 was Todd. Todd! He's a bongo player that Murray met while on nitrous oxide at the dentist's office. Proud of his decision to increase the size of the band to three, Murray tells a stunned Bret and Jemaine that they can now be a proper band, like the "Police-men". Sensing their resistance, Murray tells the guys to trust him, like the first time he saw them on stage and told them to face the front. And they've never looked back. He also said to give Todd a chance, sort of like the John Lennon song "Give Peace a Chance." Item 2 on Murray’s list was about getting an interview with Rolling Stone, but he wasn’t sure if it was the magazine or the group. (There was a definite "no" from the band.)

Todd has no problem stealing the spotlight from Bret and Jemaine and turning on the charm. Not only does he flirt with Mel, he wants to change the name of the band to Crazy Dogggz. (And wag your tail like you just can't fail.) Murray thinks Todd is as cool as the Pied Piper. And Mel gets goo-goo-eyed when he calls her a hottie. Even Jemaine, after his slap-down fight and a 20-second headlock in the park with Todd, changes his mind and fires Bret. Since he dances when he gets mad, it's at this point Bret does his best Jennifer Beals imitation combined with some funky step aerobics to an instrumental song reminiscent of the music from Flashdance.

In retaliation, Bret wants to start a new band called the Original Flight of the Conchords with his new partner Demetri, who Bret says is a guitboard player. Demetri says he actually plays a keytar — a combo keyboard and guitar. Jemaine looks like he's going to puke at the thought of this. But he doesn't have to worry for long because Todd announces that he and Demetri are going to break off and tour as the Crazy Dogggz. And it pays off as their hit song and video "The Doggie Bounce" is No. 1 on the music charts in 24 countries. (Jemaine never could master the arf-arfs!)

Now our dynamic duo is back together but their groove may be changing. When they see Mel on the street, she is listening to "The Doggie Bounce" on her headphones and starts to walk on by. And not only has she missed a FOTC gig, she's wearing a Crazy Dogggz T-shirt! Clearly benefiting from the new band that played in front of 98,000 people in Rio, Murray shows up with a new car, new suit and slicked-back hair. Bret and Jemaine go back to playing bingo night at the library.

I've had a great summer spending time with Bret and Jemaine and taking on this blog. So until next year, I'd like to leave you with these parting words:

"A Kiss Is Not a Contract" but it's very nice, "If You’re Into It." Don't let the "Inner City Pressure" get to you. Remember "It's Business Time" so we have to stick together like "Sello Tape," the tape of love — the sticky stuff. "Foux da fa fa…"

Maybe it's the heat & humidity here in California, but I just wasn't digging this episode. There were definite highlights, no doubt, but I think what kinda killed it for me was there was no Conchord song, just that stupid Doggie Bounce song. I think out of all 12 episodes, this was my least favorite.

I'll watch it again tho, maybe I just need another viewing or two when my brain isn't melting out of my ears from the heat.

Highlights:
* Jemaine fighing Todd - awesome!!! Way to put someone in a headlock Jemaine!
* Bret's dance - wow wow wow. Now, I've never seen Flashdance, but to me it seemed like he did the entire dance from Footloose. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.
* That "heartbreaking" scene (lol) when the guys discover that Mel has crossed over to the Crazy Dogggz side and Jemaine commenting that without her there, there was no one there.
* Dimitri Martin is always a treat
* And finally, the guys end it by dancing together a'la Chris Penn & Kevin Bacon.

Thanks guys for getting me thru the summer. Sunday nights are going to be empty now. Can't wait for it to be back, but they totally deserve a looong break.

Mario, awesome recapping job. Hope you'll be picking it up again when the show comes back!

The song Bret danced to reminded me of "What a Feeling" from Flashdance and when he splashed water all over himself, it was right out of one of the dance numbers. He cracked me up!

So did Jemaine when he said he had to get to band practice because Todd was very strict. B-)

I just watched a clip from Footloose and Bret is definitely channeling Kevin Bacon. On my intial viewing, when Bret slams the water bottle into the trashcan I was thinking of Beals splashing water from a bucket overhead at the end of her strip tease. Bacon is drinking and tosses the bottle away before his dance.

I guess I'm a "Maniac."

Well, I've laughed out loud quite a bit this season, but never as much as when Bret took off with his Footloose routine. Thought I would choke on my gulab jamun. And the closing credits were a perfect end to a perfect series.

So let's blow some bubbles in our glass of water, pretend it's sparkling, and drink to a new season. (Is it summer 2008 yet?...)

I agree; Bret's dance was definitely an homage to Ren's mad-dance in "Footloose."

Also, while the ep wasn't bad, it was probably my least favorite. My most favorite? Definitely "Bowie." Jemaine's impressions were hilarious. The way he repeats, "Get an eyepatch!" makes me laugh just thinking about it, as does, "Am I freaking you out? Is this a freaky dream?"

Can't wait for next season.

Season 1 DVD comes out on 11/06/07 according to whatthefolk.net.

Even tho I have all the eps DVR'd, and can see them on-demand, I will SO be buying the dvd when it comes out. I hoping for some commentaries or at least outakes. There were a few times the guys looked like they might lose it, so that would be fun to see when they did :) :) :)

Watched the ep again, and it hit me: the video for Doggy Bounce looks exactly like the video for The Macarena. Looks like the Crazy Dogggz are just a one-hit wonder, and Murray will be back at the New Zealand consulate before too long!

The dancing scene was indeed straight out of Footloose and had me laughing long after the scene was over. Who new Bret was such a good dancer! This show has fast become one of my favorites, and I can't wait to see Season 2. Thanks to HBO for picking it up!
