July 8, 2007: The Right Moment
So when exactly is the right time to tell a powerful and moderately unstable studio owner that you are going to screw him over… again? Is it while he is browbeating a waiter over a late-arriving salad or while he's haranguing a bartender for insisting that he order a cranberry drink? Watching Eric try to come clean was certainly making me a squirm a little. I had to agree with Vince that Eric looked extremely uncomfortable walking into the club, dwarfed (literally and figuratively) by Harvey’s intimidating presence. (I have to figure that Maury Chaykin’s Harvey Weingard is a spoof on another intimidating, and allegedly volatile, Hollywood Harvey, but I don’t want to make any assumptions.) Luckily for E, Harvey’s short temper got him “escorted” from the nightclub and Johnny took the opportunity to add some fuel to the fire by telling Harvey about the broken "Medellin" deal. Somehow, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Harvey, and I have a feeling that hell hath no fury like a megalomaniac scorned.
Tonight’s episode definitely helped to renew my faith a little. I’ve said before that I feel like the wheels have come off the cart with these recent episodes, but tonight was definitely a step in the right direction. Actually, two of my requests from last week were addressed — less Billy Walsh and more Ari — so I can't complain too much.
I loved that M. Night Shyamalan was willing to be so self-deprecating about his purported obsession over guarding his top-secret scripts. I’ve been a fan of this Philly boy since before The Sixth Sense, and it is good to see that despite some rough going at the box office the past few years, his sense of humor is still in tact. (And Night, if you are actually reading this, I can't wait to see what you still have up your sleeve!) If I were Ari, I would have also panicked at the notion that a misplaced Shyamalan script could be traced back to me, though the minute he drove into the driveway of the guy who had gotten his car, I knew that no good could come of it. (“Deny until you die!”)
Finally, the story line with Johnny, the mayor and the transvestite left me a little cold, especially that last scene with the video, though I guess it was a clever play on the ubiquitous crotch shots we seem to be treated to these days. Again, I like it when the story focuses squarely on the boys and their adventures. I can't wait to see this crew in Cannes!

Umm..have you seen his last few films?? His mind is either running on fumes or he's in a slump; either way no one is really anticipating another M. Night film, sorry.
Despite that I loved his cameo, especially his mentioning of his various cameos in all his films. Ari was so pissed, not only becuz he lost the script but he knew his name was "on every f***in page", LOL.
Loved that it was Drama who told Harvey!!

I enjoyed the episode very much. I am never disappointed with the show, however. The only disappointment I have every week is that it ends. I am always shocked that it is over. The half-hour flies by. I wish it were longer. I do agree, however, that I can never have too much Ari. I just love the character and Jeremy Piven. I have a big ol' crush!!!!

I also agree that this episode was back to it's normal self. We got to see lots more Ari in something we care about and the boys were just out having fun, enjoying the life (for the most part).

HEY!! Speak for yourself... if some of you can't understand that he works from mythology and fairy tales and take his films for what they are (escapist - fantasy) then don't go see them... I too happen to love M. Night... but I also have a deep love for mythology and fairy tales and have since I was a kid.
And I agree about this episode the were getting back on track - I personally can only stand the Walsh character in small doses. I want more Ari and Lloyd scenes. I love their relationship. And I am a little tired of the one dimensionality of Turtle and Drama. They seem so much like charactectures (I think I spelled that wrong) of people that I gringe when they are in some scenes. Turtle just seems like such a wannabe and I would love to see him as a person...
Can't wait to see Cannes and I see Harvey going there just to make trouble for the boys...

I have been using my ff on my DVR alot on Vince and the boys. This epi was right on point. You can never have too much Ari. I love how his wife puts up with him. Lastly, who was that woman's husband with? It makes you wonder, what with those rubber p*n*ses in the trunk!

Loved every part of this episode - easily the best so far this season! M. Night was great and the Harvey Weinstein portrayal was hilarious. I too wonder just how close they are to hitting the nail on the head with Mr. Weinstein!
I loved the Mayor of 90210 - felt this was some of the funniest of the episode! But I agree, it was Ari that really gave us what we love about this show! Him coming into the office after a night of jail was classic!
More Ari and more Lloyd!

This is a classic episode - everything I love about this show. E putting up a brave front, Vinnie knowing when to flee Harvey's wrath, and Drama breaking the news to Harvey while Harvey is subdued. The guys at their finest. I wish they would flesh out Turtle's character a little more; since he's their go-to guy when they need something, I want to see him in action.
I love Ari!!! Especially when he's with his wife and Lloyd. We need more Ari!!
LMAO when the video showed the tranny getting into the car! Hey, the mayor was warned. Back to Walsh next week (wishfully in a very small dose).

"Night" was terrific but let's give it up for Steven Tobolowsky, the best everyman character actor in the biz. His portrayal of the hapless and hopeless mayor of Beverly Hills was a hoot. Like all the roles he steps into he never overdoes it and he's always 100% believable. Funny episode and one of the best this year.

I disagree with some of you about Drama. It is Ari and Drama that I find most interesting and hilarious. Ari and his relationships with everyone is what I tune in for, but Drama is my second favorite to watch. I think he is hilarious!

Better, but still pretty lousy.
More B-list stroking with M. Night (how many times did Ari say "half a billion," as if the guy is still a guaranteed box office winner). It was less egregious than the Ratner episode, but still pathetic.
The great Tobolowsky was wasted in a cardboard-cutout role. He didn't even have any good lines, save "I hope your posses shows discretion."
Drama's on his waterskis, directly over the shark tank. "I want to be annexed" might be the stupidest B-plot in the history of television.
But yeah, less Walsh is always more.

cggarb--I agree totally.
The b-list ego stroking is even more annoying and obvious than the overdone product placement (Anybody want a Mazerati?). Everybody knows M. Night is box office poison lately, so why stress his box office earnings? It makes him sound desperate. If he were really secure, he would have let them mock him completely, without the ego-padding. The funniest self-mockery on the show was when Gary Busy played an even crazier version of himself. It made me think he was less zany in reality, because he at least had enough of a sense of humor to joke about his image.
Loved the Harvey W. send-up. Drama is one of my favorite characters and it was so in character to have him blurt it out about the broken deal. More Drama! VICTORY!
Agree with everybody who hates Walsh. I don't find Vincent Gallo entertaining and find the Gallo-doppleganger even more annoying than the original.
I can't wait for this lame duck Medellin storyline to end already. I hope Vince does an M. Night Shamalamadingdong film, justifying the weak cameo appearance by the director. It could be really funny!

Once again, Ari Gold had some of the best lines of the week. After getting his Lexus back he tells that guy "Deny until you die". I thought that was great.
I just bought a sweet Entourage shirt online that I had not seen before. I figure I'd let you guys in on it.
