April 22, 2007: How Ari Got His Groove Back

Ladies and gentlemen, tonight’s theme was emasculation, and clearly, no one was immune. I was downright dazzled watching Amanda take Vince and Eric to task for their sudden change of heart over the Edith Wharton project (and for blowing off her phone calls). While Amanda screamed and admonished her client and his hapless manager, it was clear that the balance of power has shifted. Vince is quite accustomed to getting away with murder, but it is obvious that Amanda is not going to be as patient and yielding as Ari. Then of course there is the whole matter of sexual tension, which Amanda would like to tackle head-on. I am really enjoying Carla Gugino's portrayal so far. As an actress, she has always had a bit of an edge, and as Amanda, it's underscored by a slightly neurotic vibe that makes for an interesting dynamic. I suspect that any dalliance between her and Vince could signal the demise of their working relationship. Amanda has already demonstrated that she does not enjoy being on the receiving end of Vince’s noncommittal tendencies, and that’s just on a professional level. As always, Johnny Drama could be counted on for a succinct rationalization of Vince’s underlying attraction to his assertive agent: “All men love women filled with rage.”

Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite jilted agent was not having an easy time of it. Still heartbroken over the loss of his beloved client, it was becoming apparent that Ari’s “funk” was causing an emotional upheaval resulting in a surplus of humanity (as evidenced by his protectiveness with Lloyd and his inability to fire an ineffective agent). It was quite amusing to watch Ari on the golf course with Dr. Marcus (Nora Dunn), experiencing a sort of reverse breakthrough as he slowly realized that he needs to stop evolving and reclaim his anger.

Some other highlights:

— Eric making Turtle and Drama miss a Dodgers game so they could review the Edith Wharton script on behalf of the less intelligent moviegoing public (and Drama's obvious distress at missing Bat Day).
— Lloyd admitting that he and Mrs. Ari talk because they like each other.
— Ari’s mostly unprintable monologue in the doctor’s office when he referred to Mrs. Ari as wife No. 1.
— Turtle telling Johnny that he could be in a celebrity golf tournament if he was actually a celebrity.

Next week we'll see the fallout from Amanda's booty call and Drama's run-in with an Ultimate Fighting Champion. I can't wait.

I absolutely loved Ari's rant in the doctor's office. "Wife #1. Therapist #7" Ha! I totally agree with what the women said about him at the country club.

I love Amanda, but what about Medellin?!

Ari was awesome and can't wait to see next week when his buddy from college shows up -- ARTIE LANGE! FIRE!!!!!

And Chuck Lidell too!?!?! Awesome! I can't wait to see the interaction between him and Drama. Or the result of the Amanda/Vince booty call.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!

Sometimes you like to watch a show with no strings attached, no baggage, you just want to be entertained. That is what this show is all about and I love it!

How great was Ari's emotional breakdown while talking to Bab's! "Ari, are you crying?" almost sent me to tears too! How good was it to see Ari regain his manhood by regaining his rage! For him to come into the conference room and see a bunch of his agents testing the sight of the guy who had eye surgery - then blowing up was fantastic!!

Another thing - Carla Gugino is smoking hot!! She is doing a great job of portraying Amanda, and how terrific is it to see Amanda come to the conclusion that the only way she will have any control over Vince is to sleep with him!! Can't wait for that to happen!

Next week does look awesome!

Another great episode. Watching Ari fire that loser agent and then admonish the rest of his staff was great. Sure he's an angry boss but he's an angry boss who does a jig while yelling at you! How can you hate that! I love how he was developing these human emotions and didn't know what to do with himself though I find it a little weird that he is that emotionally attached to Vince but I guess I can understand. Vince is a charismatic guy and Ari brought him up from nothing. He's sort of like the uncle who looks out for you after your dad runs out on you and your mom.

The Amanda-Vince hook up was so obvious but it's clearly going to backfire on her. Sorry but as a professional woman, getting the reputation for screwing your clients is not how to get control. Unless you don't mind losing your dignity and having everyone talk about you behind your back. Carla Gugino is awesome though! Please someone give her a show (again)! She rocks my world.

I'm really eager for Vince to start working again, hopefully on Medellin. I think it would be a great direction for the show if he did a movie that got Oscar buzz and was even nominated. And Paul Haggis came to their house to work out a schedule so Vince could do the movie! How nice is that?!

Next week looks exciting. Drama in trouble is always good and E is going to flip when he finds out about Vince and Amanda.

Is it just me or is Vince the weakest link on this show? Which is odd since he's the show around whom the premise is centered.

I'm excited about next week with Artie Lange too!

I agree catlover, Vince is the weakest link. In fact, sometimes he's irrelevant. Ari and Lloyd, on the other hand, are the stars -- they make the show.

For me, the show is more about "the art of the deal" than the entourage surrounding a sort of, almost famous, cute young actor. I like it that way. Don't get me wrong, I like Drama, and think he and Vince have a great relationship, but I can live without Eric and especially Turtle -- they're the "hands out" kids.

This is a no think no analyze, sit back and enjoy show. It's tough to watch sometimes one moment after the Sopranos ends, but I guess in a few weeks that will no longer be true. So sad.

Yes, I too love Ari and Lloyd (more Lloyd, please!) but I equally like Drama. Turtle and Eric are okay. I do like the scenes with Turtle and Drama. They're quite a pair! I loved them trying to pick up girls in the dog park last week.

Yes, Entourage is a no-brainer show. We need more of those!! Fortunately, I usually record both Sopranos and Entourage so I don't typically watch them back-to-back.

I love Turtle, especially when he's with Drama. "Good Morning, Saigon" is still one of my favorite episodes just for the scenes in which Turtle and Drama track down the rapper and their back-and-forth.

I actually could do without E but someone needs to be the voice of reason. I think when the show ends, if they wanted, they could easily spin it off to focus just on Ari, Lloyd and the Miller-Gold agency. They've already proven they can get some of the biggest actors around to guest star(how hilarious was James Woods in "Aquamom") so watching Ari and Lloyd deal with many actors instead of just that one would make for great entertainment.

Hey, did anybody happen to see that when Ari stormed back into the building from his session with the "doc" at the golf course, he accidentally stumbled into a kid that was delivering the mail? It probably wasn't him, but it made me think of the kid who Ari thought was another agent last season, when he fired him for not telling him that James Cameron was directing Aquaman? HILARIOUS. God, I love this show!
