Episode Recap: “The Wedding”

Or not. Karen and Freddie were married in a beautiful ceremony and divorced 45 minutes later, a record even for her. We knew she wouldn’t last long with the second-rate golfer, but the big news was that she finally admitted that she is in love with Nick. I found it rather sad that she was so freaked out when Freddie got down on his knees and professed his love for her and she immediately requested a divorce. He did get $3 million worth of Dirty Sexy Money, so how hard could it really be? Letitia tried to drink the candle when Karen said she wanted to marry Nick and asked Karen to “let me help you,” completely conspiratorially. All I can say is, Karen may be a lot of nasty things, but she looks good without makeup.

When Karen kissed Nick, he ran (guiltily) home to Lisa and told her how much he loved her. “I’m yours,” he repeated twice (because everyone on this show has two loves). Somehow, I wasn’t totally convinced the second was for his wife.

Patrick is in cahoots with Simon Elder and it is heartbreaking to his father. He proved his mettle by throwing a lawsuit against his father’s friends and business associates. To add insult to injury, his wife, Ellen, questioned him about his affair, “With a woman, or a man, or something in between.” Patrick accused a very drunken Tripp of having spilled the beans. I thought maybe Karen had told Ellen about Carmelita, but it was Simon. He’s just bad, bad to the bone. Based on Simon’s advice, Patrick told Ellen about the affair. I’m not sure this was such a good idea, but Simon obviously has an agenda. I think Patrick is a weak man. He always has to have someone tell him what to do. First his father, now Simon, then his wife and Carmelita. Poor guy.

Best lines:
• “It’s none of my business how you like your eggs.”
• “The last time I saw you, you dumped our son in my lap like a half-eaten sandwich.”
• “He is as capable and deserving a fourth husband as you are likely to find.”
• “Your honor, the seven deadly sins are not like the Constitution, they can’t be amended. So if I were you, yes, I would be worried.”
• “She will not keep us out of Washington, either one of us. I did not marry a Darling for nothing.”
• “I have to write a sermon for my sister and her fourth ex-husband.”

When Tripp told Kiki, “Your dad is family,” I thought, “Too true, too true.” The DNA results have still not been revealed to us....

Tripp’s tequila-drinking binge started at 9 am with Nick and ended with a bone-dry bottle and songs with Clark. It was a tradition he reserved for Karen’s wedding days, which he started with her first father-in-law. Her fourth wedding day was a bittersweet day for him. He was crestfallen but not surprised when she came to tell him that she had already had the marriage annulled.

OK, a total aside, but what’s with all the vanishing actors? First it was Elle Fanning being replaced by the new Kiki, and now there is a totally different mother for Brian’s son. The first actress, Brooke Smith, has been on Weeds and is on Grey’s Anatomy. I liked her. But Brian Sr didn’t seem to mind that it was someone else and had a quickie reunion with his babymama. I was heartbroken for him when she told him she was taking Brian Jr to Brazil. He’s such a self-righteous b--tard most of the time that it makes it that much harder when he is hurt by something. What a range on this actor. Glenn Fitzgerald really runs the gamut of emotions. He’s fabulous.

Speaking of little Kiki, she was already plotting to live just like the Darlings, “No matter what it takes, no matter what.” Scary. Sounds like she takes after the Darlings more than the Georges.

Tripp described the feeling he was having on Karen’s fourth wedding day, as “Aware,” pronounced "a-war-ay," a Japanese term meaning “reverence for the transient beauty and mortality of all things.” His inner struggle was apparent when he told Karen, “This day in a father’s life, grief and joy are intertwined.” Once again, Donald Sutherland stole just about every scene he was in, and even a few he wasn’t.

Strange and wonderful things:
• Brian at the foot of the wedding bed — hilarious.
• The wedding procession song was hysterical. “There’s no place left to go.”
• Juliet’s ever-lengthening and -shortening hair extensions.

Brian’s wedding sermon incorporated the three Cs: confirmation, consolation and, wait for it, joy. Even though "joy" isn’t a C-word, life and love are surprising. It was actually a really nice sermon. And it led to one of the best lines of the ep when Tripp said to Brian, “There really is such a kind person buried deep down inside of you — deep, deep down inside you. Somewhere.”

Have you ever noticed we almost never see scenes with Juliet and Karen. Not a lot of sisterly bonding going on there. Karen has to be near 40 and Juliet just turned 25. Poor Tish was pregnant over the course of more than 15 years? That’s gotta suck.

Simon finally ticked Tripp off to the point of no return. Tripp told Nick he has endured “massive betrayal” but “will not suffer this man. I want to destroy him.” Tripp, I’m not sure I understand what you mean. “I want that son of a bitch completely and utterly destroyed.” Oh, I see. Well, it sure seems like Simon deserves it.

Natalie tried to win Juliet back with her hit single "Free to Forgive." It really irked Jeremy, but it worked like a charm on Juliet, and she was smitten. The reunited girls ran off into the sunset with Juliet’s accessorizing dog and their Pinkberry fro-yos.

Seeing that Karen is one of my least favorite characters and the Nick-crush thing is my least favorite storyline, this was bound to be an episode I did not love (still really like the show in general though!) Also, though there were some very funny moments (Paula named all of my favorite,) it seemed a tad bit heavier than others. In the end, none of the family seemed too happy ...except maybe Julia. Jeremy had a very small role in tonight's episode. He is usually good for some comic relief.

As usual, Brian was the standout for me (and Tripp of course.) I know he has not always done the right thing, but for some reason, I just do not want him to lose Brian Jr. I loved it when he told Brian's mother "don't start packing."

This is still one of my favorite newbies of the season. For anyone who is into these things, you can vote for Dirty Sexy Money for Best New Drama Series in the People's Choice Awards at http://pcavote.com. Some of the other categories have pretty lame choices, but the "Best New Drama" and "Best New Comedy" categories pretty much encompass all the new network shows (I think.)

Please tell me that Brian Jr. will not be moving to Brazil. The father/son relationship between those two has really grown on me. The show has a lot of terrific zaniness and over-the-top melodrama, but it comes back down to earth with feet planted solidly on the ground whenever Brian Sr. and Brian Jr. are together.

I never thought the marriage would last, but 45 minutes? I couldn't stop laughing. I was a bit surprised that Letitia would so wholeheartedly throw in her support of Karen's scheme. Yes, I know Dutch was the love of her life (or one of them, at least), but still threw me for a loop.

I must have missed the explanation, but can someone please tell me how is it that Simon Elder is a BLACK Russian??

...Good morning...When Simon Elder bought Karen's sex tape and then returned it(or one of his assistants)returned it to the Darlings, I thought he was a cool guy; but what's up with him now? what is his agenda? why is he trying to destroy Tripp? and how can Patrick be so dumb as to trust him, confide in him? Oh, how I misssed Tripp Darling, who now is a lot cooler(to me) because he drinks tequila! "completely and utterly destroyed"; there is just something in the way Donald Sutherland pronunciates words...it is as if I'm hearing them for the first time...

Again. FAN FREAKINGTASTIC. I love this show. I just love it. And I love that Brian, now in total love with his son, was crestfallen at the sons being taken from him. He'll fight. You can see it.

And I loved the Freddie/ Karen scene. I was a little sad for him...I mean even though he's an idiot he meant well when he confessed.

But this belonged to Trip. Every scene he was just GOLD. I loved the interaction between him and Karen..."Daddy you are so WASTED" and him and Brian......So over Pat and the HE/ SHE Carmelita so I am glad the wife now knows.

Dang, Donald Sutherland is magnificent! He owned it last night. It's funny how much he resembles Kiefer at certain angles.

I'm loving Brian, who's finally showing some conscience. I had no idea Glenn Fitzgerald used to be a Calvin Klein model! When I saw Cheryl Lee (Twin Peaks) as his baby momma, I didn't think she was the original actress.

My favorite episode so far this year. I have said it once and I will say it again "Donald Sutherland" is a rock star is this show! He absolutely commands attention in every scene he is in! Love love love him!

I hope Brian Jr. doesn't move to Brazil either as this has become my favorite storyline in the show. Brian Sr. is the most interesting guy and watching the relationship grow b/t he and his son is perfect.

The 45 minute marriage is classic! Worried about KiKi and her passion for the "good life" but her dancing with Brian Jr. was cute. And Tripp offering her the house for her wedding was great.

Can't wait to see the show down with Patrick, his wife and the mistress!

Love love love this show and am delighted that it keeps consistently delivering powerful scrips that keep us wanting more. I hope the writers strike doesn't spoil things for this, my guiltiest of pleasures! AND how come I never noticed hunky "Nick" before he became Nick??

Not much left for me to say, since it's all been said here already.

Jayhawk, I agree about the Nick/Karen thing wholeheartedly. Don't even like watching those scenes. For one thing, I don't find Karen more attractive than Nick's wife at all. And though Nick has to do some things he'd rather not (for the family) and though he has to spend huge chunks of time away from his family, I don't want to think of him as even tempted by the likes of Karen.

Kudos to the writers and to all the actors, with my favorites being Peter Krause and Donald Sutherland.

Thanks to you, too, Paula. That was a super blog.

Paula, great post. I'm with you on the Nick-Karen thing. He seems extremely hesitant to tell her to back off. Whereas he should be stressing to her that he takes his marriage seriously, he stands around like he's contemplating getting back together with her and has never actually said there's no chance of a reconciliation.

I've loved watching Brians Sr. & Jr. bonding, and I don't want the little guy to go. I think it's cute how he's adapting to his wealthy heritage. I think Brian Sr. will fight tooth & nail to keep his son with him.

Patrick's wife Ellen proved to be a tough bird. I liked how she let him know she won't be pushed out of the picture. I'm looking so forward to the sit-down/showdown between Patrick and his women.

Donald Sutherland could read the alphabet and it would be the most engrossing, amazing speech we've ever heard. He simply commands the screen.

This is definitely my favorite new show of the year!

hoping someone can help me here...i had to walk out of the room for a second during simon elder's "free to be you and me" speech to pat. i got the gist though, and i know he convinced pat to tell ellen the truth about carmelita. when i returned, simon was speaking to someone else in russian, i believe, and i saw some subtitles. all i saw was "good...good" and then it was over. what did he say before that? no tivo here, sadly :(

All I have to say is PLEASE don't let Brian Jr. go! I love the interaction of the 2 Brian's, it makes Sr. more human and I adored his sermon at Karen's wedding, it was beautiful.

I like Karen and I like the Nick/Karen will they get together and I love the fact that Letitia is going to help Karen. I felt sorry for Karen that she should just go through life loveless without at least trying.

I'm still not understanding how people are not enjoying the new shows this season when I have found most of them to be fantastic. I mean we have Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, Journeyman, Reaper & Samantha Who?. All of these shows are done so well that they literally pull me back every week! Plus all of the fabulous returning shows, I'm watching more tv now than I ever have!
