Episode Recap: “The Watch”

It’s all happening.

Oh, how I hate to gloat, but way back in the second episode of Dirty Sexy Money, “The Lions”, I offered the following: Did we see a tiny glimmer of kindness from the bitter Brian when he sent the boy to bed? Perhaps he and Nick are half-brothers? Or could it be that Tish and Dutch had two children, Brian and Nick, the other set of twins? Hmmm.

Tooting one’s horn is so unbecoming, but “TOOT, TOOT”! Many of you had the same idea as well, so I’m sure I wasn’t the first to think it, I just got to point it out. Good to know we’re all on the same track. I’m still not 100% certain that Tish isn’t somehow Nick’s mom as well. The boys are the same age. And Nick’s mother was quick to dismiss him. Once again, I say, Hmmm…

So we have confirmation that Brian and Nick are brothers; if we didn’t know before the show started, we should have been able to tell as they strode side by side into the courtroom before the Reverend was arrested for a class “C” felony. It’s their bickering that gives them away.

As if that wasn’t enough proof, Letitia and Tripp had a nasty fight over Brian. She was not convinced that Tripp’s harshness towards his “son’s” criminal act had nothing to do with his being a ba*tard child. Tripp later defended Nick as if he was his son. The family tree(s) in this show are very convoluted.

Poor Patrick is a victim of his wife, his lover and his father, (and now Simon Elder). They all rule his life, leaving very little for him to decide for himself. The only decision he did make was that he wanted Carmelita in his life. Their love story is the truest one in this whole show. Somehow Carmelita makes Patrick honest.

Karen was hilarious. Her “Death, I’m coming for you!” monologue cracked me right the heck up. And with lines like, “I never go to Mozambique on a second date,” how does she not get more airtime?

That Simon is a slippery eel, though, he’s better looking than one. I don’t trust him, no way, no how. Can’t wait to find out what he’s got against Tripp that he’s willing to do to him and his family what he did to Darling Plaza.

Lisa was fantastic as Jeremy’s “beard” in his silly ploy to make Sofia think he’s poor. (He bought a brownstone to prove it.) Btw, Sofia is built like a brick house - does it matter if he’s rich or poor? More kudos to Seth Gabel, his physical comedy with the red sculpture in the art gallery was hilarious.

A ridiculously long list of fantastic lines, (Thanks, writers!!!):
“You got me sunshine, we’re screwed.”
“I feel like I’m filled with lime green neon.”
“That is like, financial racism.”
“The firearm chapter of my marriage is over.”
“I just love giving.”
“Let’s nude it up!”
“I’ve had quite a day; I’ve lost two fathers and a son. Please get the hell away from me.”
“Crossed my mind Karen might have been my sister. Thought it best to leave that alone.”
“It’s just me and my paints, and my other paints.”

This was the first ep I felt Peter Krause actually got to color his own canvas. First, when Tish explained the problems with Darling paternity, and Nick had to admit, “Brian is my brother,” I finally felt he was in the same acting class as the rest of them. And the Where the Red Fern Grows story was great. His “No one says everything” scene with Tripp when he said, “I lost my mother. I lost my father. I lost my whole childhood to your family. You owe me the truth,” was moving. When Tripp got up after him and slammed the door, I was speechless. The scene with Dutch was equally as heart wrenching.

Dutch, played by Peter Strauss, was trying to get away from the Darlings just before he was found dead in the Long Island Sound. Peter Krause. Peter Strauss. (Wasn’t it fitting that the Strauss fathered the Krause?) I’ve loved Peter Strauss since Rich Man, Poor Man.

I almost died when Tish asked Brian if it would have made a difference if she’d told him about Nick and Brian said, “Yeah.” It completely broke my heart.

It was very Pulp Fiction when Brian gave his son Dutch’s father’s watch and told the story of the generations of fathers who had worn it. I did however cry for about a 1/2 hour when they hugged before Brian Jr. got into the cab. “You don’t have to say it, Daddy. I know,” cried BJ. That rotten, self-serving mother of little Brian forced a quick good-bye. What a witch! She is mean. Meaner than Brian, if you ask me. How could you take a man’s son from him? (Oh, wait, didn’t Tish do the same thing?) Brian ran after the cab and the song that took us through that emotional moment, Nothing Left to Lose by Mat Kearney, made me cry even harder. Listen to it here.

We ended as we began with the brothers arguing. “Fine, I hate you. Sit down, please,” Brian’s said with a little smirk. I hope they’ll be OK.

I don’t know if I can handle seven days off without Dirty Sexy Money, so I’m headed over to our Online Video Guide to watch clips.

I said it on the first episode that Brian and Nick were half brothers. But after tonight, Im thinking that Nick is really a Darling because Tripp keeps saying that Nick is a Darling. Im thinking Tripp switched Nick at birth...well something like that.

Anyway, I also teared up Brians good-bye to Bj. That little boy is a good actor. And I totally didn't think of Pulp Fiction when Brian was telling BJ about the watch.

And where was Juliet in tonights episode?

Plus Peter Strauss was great tonight.

Yep, the self congrats can be a bit unbecoming. Kidding! I know I enjoy the very few times I am right about twists in storylines. After it was mentioned that Brian may be Nick's brother the first time in the blog, I thought that may be right; but I kept wondering if that was just too obvious. I guess not. You may be right about Nick being a Darling as well, but I doubt it. I will say right now that I would HATE that storyline. I really do not think they will go there because either Letitia or Tripp would have stopped the Karen & Nick relationship. The ick factor would be way too high.

Glenn Fitzgerald was the MVP of the show for me tonight. He commanded every scene he was in. I have always loved every snarky scene with him and Nick and this new info should make them even better. He was outstanding when he was saying goodbye to lil' Brian Jr. Bring back Gustav!! Of course Brian was wrong for making his son a Swedish orphan, but the mother was just as wrong to dump him on his father, leave him, let her son get attached to his father, then yank him away. Poor kid.

Jeremy cracked me up last night. I think Seth Gabel has pretty good comedic chops, which is strange because the only thing I have seen him in before was an episode of SVU where he played a sociopath. I thought it was funny when Nick said "you don't paint" to him and he responded "No...keep up!" then proceeded to shush Nick.

I found Karen to be quite tolerable. I really like her character so much more when the steer away from the "pining for Nick" stuff. There could be so much more to her character, and I hope eventually there is.

Patrick was flat out hilarious doped up.

Juliet...as always....zzzzzzzz.

I really don't think that Nick is going to turn out to be a Darling. That, and with the whole Karen thing, would be going into Daytime Soap Opera territory.

I loved when Brian said it would have made a difference if he knew Nick was his brother. In the end, he wants someone he can be close with. It was great when he gave Brian Jr. Dutch's watch.

Also great was the scene with Patrick and Carmelita. They are my favorite couple on this show. And she is gorgeous.

I thought the Peter Strauss-Peter Krause thing was hysterical. That scene really made me tear up. Knowing it was the last time Nick ever saw his father, and he just wanted someone to confide in. And then he ended up dead.

Thank you to the person that posted that they did not think the Nick would turn out to be a Darling, I totally agree - this isn't Lost people! Not everything means something! Sit back and enjoy the show and stop reading into every little detail....

...Wow, I have nothing to add; your recap was perfect, Paula; yes, I was most shocked by Tripp slamming the door on Nick, and when Brian tells his mom "you let me live my whole life hating him", was it regarding Nick, or Dutch? heartbreaking anyway...

I'm also glad that Nick and Brian found out in the same episode and it wasn't that Nick found out and the rest of the season Brian would be mean to him, not knowing. I'm impressed that they didn't try to drag the secret out.

well, i'm a first-time poster. Paula, your recap was great. This ep was fantastic...I too was heartbroken at the loss of Brian Jr. All in all, can't wait to next week. Re: those previews, it def appears that Jeremy has a new BFF in Lisa. Their scenes together pleasantly surprised me esp, when Jeremy kept drinking and eating things! Nice of Lisa to help him out (while encouraging to be honest). I think this shows how difficult it must be for Nick's family to not engage w/ the Darlings.

Great recap, Paula! I've always loved the Brian character. Just when you really hate him, a little bit of the boy-left-out-in-the-cold look just passes across his face and it makes me feel for him. I just hope they don't soften his character too much. It was kinda hard to concentrate on the lines between Simon and Karen with her shirt all unbuttoned, so you impress me Paula!

lizzybelle - Juliette wasn't on because the actress is/was in rehab.

Great Recap! Thanks for all the insights. I cried for almost the last third of this show. This was the best eppy of the season to me. I was really glad that Brian didn't push Nick away and made him sit with him - they need each other more than they know, I think.

I think the Mat Kearny song was "Breathe In Breathe Out." Just an FYI in case anyone is looking for it. Great recap! I think Brian is the best character on that show.

I love this show more every week. And I have a new favorite character every week. This week it was Brian. His scenes were all amazing. The acting on this show continues to blow me away (except for Juliet, but I do like her character).

I was thinking that Brian would turn out to be Nick's brother and I really am anxious to see how that dynamic will play out...

There are so many moments of acting goodness on this show I can't STAND it. Everyone was dead on last night! I'm laughing one moment and crying the next.

I really would like to know what Tish did to get Brian's charges dropped.

So great to see Peter Strauss cast as Dutch. The scene on his birthday with nick was just so wrenching, but powerful. I felt so bad for him when Tish finally told him the truth about Brian. Boy, she really got blasted from all sides last night, probably deservedly so, but still rough. The scene with Brian and Nick in the church was excellent too.

That final Mat Kearney song was definitely "Nothing Left to Lose."
