Episode Recap: “The Country House”

If there was ever a thrill-a-minute Dirty Sexy Money, tonight’s episode was the one. Simon Elder has a different name, one I imagine starts with the letter “C”, no doubt. I could not believe that he had the cahones to dynamite the old Darling Plaza. Has he no heart? Has he not seen those touching scenes of Tripp waxing nostalgic about the 15-story building he once called “home”? Ah, cruelty.

As if that wasn’t shocking enough, Ellen really pulled the rabbit out of the hat when she shot Paddy in the leg, and boy did he deserve it. We knew she had it in her when she invited Carmelita to tea and yet it was a complete surprise when she pulled the trigger. It was the emotional relationship with Carmlita that pushed Ellen over the edge more than the sexual one. More power to you, sister. Patrick was such a mamby-pamby during Ellen and Carm’s meeting, it begs the question, how does a guy like Patrick have two women fighting over him? Ellen’s face when she opened the door to meet Carmelita face to face? Priceless. For everything else, there’s Master…. Oh, nevermind.

It was great fun to watch Tish get into the mix between Karen and Lisa. Frankly, they weren’t using Ms. Clayburgh enough, so this little fun side plot line is a perfect antidote to the men’s seriousness. And she plays a troublemaker so well.

Not for nothing, but I almost hope Nick ends up in bed with Karen, just so we can get rid of Whiney Lisa. I liked her better when she was Ballsy Lisa, telling Karen to put her wiles somewhere where the sun don’t ever shine. She could a thing or from Ellen who handled infidelity in a more “pro-active” way. Nick wouldn’t dream of betraying her, but if she keeps up this way, she’ll end up pushing him right into Karen’s waiting arms.

Brian was back to his old self, no more poignantly pointed out than when he was praying to God just as his messenger handed the arbitrator in his custody case a humongous wad of cash. I’m not above a little pay-off. We can only hope she has the good sense to keep the money and make the appropriate judgment about which parent should get Gustav, pardon me, I meant Brian, Jr.

My sweet Juliet was nowhere to be found in this ep, but Jeremy was in rare form wooing the beautiful Sofia, played by the lovely Sofia Vergara, as a common valet. I didn’t believe her for a solitary minute when he said his family name and she played dumb. Why would a woman like her go out on a date with a laborer? She wouldn’t, it’s implausible. And then he took her to a “poor person’s” restaurant? That looked like a pretty pricey joint. Jeremy’s collusion with Clark as his father was great, but it was their conversation about Clark’s seeming poverty-stricken life that was the highlight for me. Watching Jeremy try to copy Clark to wipe down the car was precious. I loved that he called Clark to come and pick him up in Brooklyn rather than take the subway.

Oh, Tripp, don’t make me start hating you yet! I was dismayed that Tripp was so underhanded about getting Simon and Patrick to the “sit-down”. I think he has good cause to hate Simon and to want to prove Simon’s deviltry to his son, but he undermined Nick’s trust and further pushed Patrick away. Tripp and Simon are playing each other and may take a few people down with them. I knew it wasn’t going well when Simon referred to Tripp as a “desiccated old man.” Also, did you get the sense when Simon took Tish’s hand in greeting that they had met before?

And then they just slipped in that Tripp’s brother, Kenneth, was assassinated and the finger was pointing at Tripp. Opening the flood gates, if you ask me.

Total aside: Nick let his sideburns grow out just like Tripp’s. And they also had the exact same outfit on in the last scene: blue suits, white shirts, blue ties. Like father, like son?

There were so many incredible lines I couldn’t possibly put them all here, but a few of my favorites:
“I’m trying to buy our son.”
“The holiday die-off has commenced.”
“It’s so her to come along, isn’t it?”
“This is the new normal.”
“Reverend Darling, who is Gustav?”
“Isn’t it also true that you kept Brian Jr. on a Swedish diet including fermented milk and reindeer?”
“She had him for seven years. You had him for two months and made him speak Swedish.”
“I’m not dried meat.”

Until we meet again, our Online Video Guide will get you through the night. Or the next seven days as the case may be.

I really want to see Lisa kick Karen's behind. That little smile Karen gave when Nick left the room after her "I thought it was our little secret" deserves a good butt-kicking. :)

...Good morning...Great recap Paula; I was pleasantly surprised that you mentioned Nick's sideburns; I noticed them too, but I like Tripp's sideburns much better...I was unable to give my full attention to the first half hour of the show(house full of guests); however, the 2nd half hour I did pay attention; surely Simon Elder will not get away with calling Tripp "a fossil"? How dare he??? I was disappointed that Simon was not the one to get shot...My mom watched part of the episode with me and when Tripp appeared I told her "you know, if that man came to take me away right now, I'd go with him with my eyes closed", and she told me "so why don't you write to him?"; isn't she sweet?...

Sofia's never heard of the Darlings? Yeah, that's like a (real) New Yorker who's never heard of the Rockefellers. The sad thing is that Jeremy is so desperate to believe that a woman could actually like him and not his money that he's willing to overlook such a glaring implausibility. Gotta hand it to Sofia, though. The gal never skips a beat, "oh, of course, this is your father!" I loved it when Sofia tells Jeremy that the subway is only 2 blocks away, and the look on Jeremy's face was as if she had just suggested he put his arm in a woodchipper.

All the mystery and intrigue about the tanglings between Simon and the Darlings is really getting juicy. I love the budding father-son relationship between Trip and Nick. I'm still dying to know which of the kids is NOT Trip's but instead Nick's half-sibling.

Love Karen! love!Love!!LOVE!!! She is just too damn funny. I really hope Brian Jr. sticks around because I just love the father-son chemistry between them. Finally, can you really blame Ellen?

I want to see Lisa kick Karen's butt too!!! She had her chance with Nick, there's no way he'd leave Lisa now.

I can't believe Ellen shot Paddy in a sense and yet I agree with her, I mean what he's done to her is horrible but having seen the relationship that Paddy has with Carmelita I feel bad for him. I mean she really does give him so much support.

I want to know which kid is Dutches too! Who thinks its the twins????!!

Great episode!!

While I realize that Simon is the richest man in the world, I don't believe that even he has enought clout to be able to implode Darling Plaza on Thanksgiving day in New York.

Personally, I don't blame Simon if he truly believes that Tripp did what he said, and for the record, we all know Tripp has it in him to be ruthless.

That being said, if it was Dutch, then Nick got suspects up the wazoo. And powerful rich ones at that.

The rest of the show was so dead on perfect... except for Lisa. Kick-ass one minute and whiny the next - can't Nick see the correlation between his own marriage and his father's? Walk baby steps, Nick - the vultures are coming for you...

I love the chauffeur too!
I also don't believe the girl doesn't know who Jeremy is. She's sure got him played for a fool, but then both he and his twin sis are too naive to be believed.

I guess we can disbelieve the whole story Simon told Nick about his coming from Russia and making $100 million in his first year. I think the first time he told any semblance of the truth was in this episode.

Every episode I expect it to come out that Tripp is at least semi-bad, because I don't recall a Donald Sutherland character where he wasn't bad or terrifically naughty..lol. Love him.

I don't like Karen. And I think that whole character could be eliminated and the show wouldn't suffer.

So Simon's father was Tripp's mother's lover? Guess it was a Demi Moore/Ashton Kutcher sort of thing. Either that or Simon's mother was either much younger than his father or had him later in life, given that this was supposed to have happened during the Eisenhower era.

Everyone's upset with Karen, but what about Tish (who has some fickle ideas about marriage)? She's now set about helping her daughter (who has some fickle ideas about marriage) snare a married man by whispering in his wife's ear. At least Karen's straightforward about what she wants. Tish, on the other hand, seems a perfect match for Tripp, calm on the surface, but there's a lot of stuff happening underwater.

Sofia is totally playing Jeremy...and he should know it. She comes to his father's building to eat and she doesn't know who the Darlings are...c'mon!

I may be the only one out there, but I am off the rocks hooked on Jeremy, I think he is totally fine!

Awesome episode, but I didn't miss Juliet one bit. It's way better without her.

I really like this show. I like Karen and think she is really funny. I even like her going after Nick with the help of mommy dearest. But I need Lisa to man up and stop complaining and fight fire with fire. be confident your man not leaving you and beat the Darlings at their own game. The writers find someone for Karen to love because she needs to be Happy. I love the Simon and Tripp story, whose bad, whose good. Interesting. Rev. Darling gets funnier and funnier each episode. Hoepfully, Brian Jr. will stick around I like the dynamic he brings. He innocent and has not been tainted by the Darlings. He can be their moral compass. Lastly, my poor Jeremy. I hated the sorry line mainly because it was painful to watch such a loving character search for love in such a dishonest way. I hope this story line ends soon it is painfully to watch. Oh, I forgot congrats to the wife, I would have shot him to!!!!!!

I think it's Karen! Won't that put a crimp in her desire to have Nick?
