Episode Recap: "The Bridge"
OK, first thing’s first. Tish didn’t reveal the truth about which child was not Tripp’s. That really ticks me off. However, did you catch Tish’s expression when Tripp brought up the twins and called them “different”? Priceless. Dirty Sexy Money mixes it up again.
Also, it’s official: I love the twins. They fought over their birthday party and found that $1 million was not enough to split. This should be my problem. Juliet’s Marie Antoinette birthday party was almost as over-the-top as Jeremy’s party on the Brooklyn Bridge. The expression she had on her face when she talked about kissing that good-looking boy was hilarious. I hope she never gets Botox. And once she saw him kissing another girl, she cried, “Let them eat cake.” Jeremy was off his rocker, weaving along nearly naked on the Brooklyn Bridge singing “All By Myself.” He wins the craziest-twin award this week. He’s a terrible singer! But it was so sad. I’m happy that Jeremy gave Natalie the boot. Juliet said it best: “You and Natalie together was like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth.”
Excellent lines, although it was all in the delivery: “Jet fuel doesn’t grow on trees.” “It’s a lot of money for two ants.” “OK, note to self, ‘crush her.’”
Boy, Karen’s true colors are finally showing. Since she got told off by Lisa last week, she needs a new place to toss her rage, so she chose to pick on her brother, Patrick. She is the one we’re going to love to hate. She has started playing hardball. And I love it.
When Brian Jr. finally broke down and told his stepmom the truth (“Yeah, about that… my name’s not Gustav”), I snickered. That kid is not only cute, but a good little actor. And Mei Ling Hwa confronted Brian. I was amazed that he was that honest with his wife about his son and his relationship with Brian Jr.’s mother. Brian begged his wife to forgive him and she told him she wants a divorce. I couldn’t believe it when Brian broke down in front of Nick. He’s been such a schmuck to Nick and then when something really hit him hard, he turned to Nick for advice. It was very — how should I put this? — brotherly.
Brian’s best line: “I’m sorry I called you, Mr. Perfect. You are kind of insufferable with your happiness, though.”
Brian was actually distraught at the idea that his marriage might break up. I think he really took the children’s Bible story about honesty to heart. When he asked Mei Ling Hwa to let him come back to her, it was touching. He had made that comment earlier with Karen that her several marriages sort of make the institution of marriage a sham. So his wife kicked him out of their house, and he was broken-hearted about it. But he got to move back in with his parents, so it’s not like he will be suffering too much.
Tripp was very hard on Jeremy, but Nick was fantastic. He was honest and straightforward: “I’m here to tell you what’s wrong.” It’s great that Nick is taking this role of advising Tripp and the rest of the brood. He’s not just their lawyer, but sometimes he's the only voice of reason in a family full of spoiled children. Sutherland was nothing short of brilliant again in that scene.
Kudos to Seth Gabel, he was the breakout star of the ep. He got to cover a range of emotions and he did it excellently.
Nick finally met Simon Elder, who thinks he and Nick are “cut from the same cloth.” Another familial reference. Someday we’ll find out who’s actually related. Simon made $100 million his first year in American after having grown up poor in Russia. A little far-reaching as reality, but then this show isn’t exactly about any reality I’ve ever known.
Once again, though, Dutch’s legacy lives on through all these other people and Nick continues to find out things about his father he never knew when he was alive. Simon is going to lead Nick somewhere. Not sure where, but this should be interesting.
Based on Simon’s encouraging advice, Nick stepped out of the nest and finally started spending Tripp’s money. First he bought the ants for his wife and then he gave away the lump of cash to the playground people.
I hate when this show ends, because I could watch several hours of it at a time. Since we don’t get to make the rules about how long Dirty Sexy Money is on each week, we’ll just have to check out the Online Video Guide to help get us through the week.

This show keeps getting better and better. Karen is much, much smarter than she lets on. brilliant. It was great to see the 'human' side of Brian. I love that the pilot showed the Darlings as nothing but caricatures but that week by week, we learn more about them and see that that they are much more complex than we first perceived.
Love this show!!

I love this show also. It's probably my favorite new show this Fall season.
I have to say that I wasn't in love with the twins this episode. A little bit of them goes a long way. They are treated and act as if they're about 15 years old. Perhaps spoiled mega rich kids act like that at 25, I for sure wouldn't know. But I was glad to see them at the end having learned something about life.
Good recap, Paula, even though I don't agree about the twins! I, too, loved little Brian, Jr. And actually, Mrs. Brian took that bit of nasty news much better than I would have!!
Can't wait to learn who is biologically related to Nick. My crush on Peter Krause deepens each week. Shhhhhhh.

Those were my thoughts exactly - The Human side of Rev. Brian. It was really nice him being brought down like that. I am so glad that Brian Jr told the truth and that his dad told him it was the right thing to do.
I really like the twins. They are a hoot. I wonder what kind of job Tripp has lined up for Jeremy. I'm glad the bang stealing hussy he was stealing got the boot. I didn't like her. I don't see what a difference it really makes if the twins get their trusts held off for another 5 years. Its not like they don't have the means already to go and buy whatever they want on "daddy's" dime. haha
After a Karen heavy episode last week, it was nice to not have so much of her this week. I'm not a big fan of hers. However, with her new found meanness - she might get interesting. As long as she leaves Nick alone. That innocent puppy love thing she pined on Nick with was just disturbing. Oh well.
Looking forward to next week.

What a great episode! I'm starting to wonder if the twins are really Tripps and the other kids aren't. Maybe that's why he's so hard on them. They're his only real legacy and they're screw-ups. Just a thought.
Oh, that little Brian, Jr. is about the cutest kid I've ever seen on TV!

...Good morning!...I love love DSM; great episode last night; time goes by very fast when it is on, and around 8:57PM, 8:58PM I check to see if DSM is on, hoping it will start earlier, and it's agony to see Private Practice is still on at that time...after last night I oficially like the twins...I don't like to comment on the issue of who might not be Tripp's son or daughter because I'd like to think that all the Darling children are his, but I couldn't help noticing when Jeremy was singing on the bridge that he kind of looked like Nick...Just out of curiosity I'd like to know who is the designer for Tripp's clothing; his suits, shirts are impecable...my favorite line of the episode has to be well, yes, one of Tripp's: "Justin Timberlake? Ethan Hawke? Who are these people?"; don't want to offend any Timberlake/Hawke fans out there, but...yes, indeed, who are they compared to Donald Sutherland...

I can't recall the number of times I screamed "GREAT", when Brian Jnr. told Mei Ling the truth, while she was in the bathtub. Children are so innocent, and never asked to be part of the mess their parents create. Yet, the beauty of it though is, the truth finally brought a "truth" to Brian Snr., who finally revealed his hurt, his pain, and some of his many demons. What a conflicted soul! I guess it's typical of how the world turns, i.e., the people we go to for counsel (clergy) are some of the most screwed up individuals. Yet, I am happy somehow father and son seem to be on the road to having a relationship,,,,of some sort - given Brian Snr.'s nature and temperament.
The mystery as to who is NOT Tripp's child or children continues. Somehow, the twins were bearable last night. I still don't see their value to the show, yet I must say the male twin (forgetting his name) brought it home in the outpouring of pain, and request of acceptance to his father. I could've related @ one time in my life.
I think this is the best new show of the season. Each episode just gets better and better.

Loved this episode and DSM is offically my fav new show of the season. I too thought maybe the twins are the "love children" when Tripp called them different. And I absolutely love the little boy playing Gustav/Brian Jr. He comes across so believable and the scene with his dad in the old bedroom was perfect. Actually liked the parties with the twins realizing that the money is not going to buy them happiness. One question...when are we going to see more of Billy Baldwins wife and find out her story? Best line of the night goes to Nick when the playground people daid "You don't know what this money will do to us" and he said "Yes I do, but I am giving it you you anyway". Kinda sums up the show, yes?
p.s. That ant picture is hideous though...$12,000 per ant? Money doesn't buy taste.

This has become one of my favorite shows this season. It's great to see each character's personality develop as we get further into the season. I love how Peter Krause's character stays so even-keel and upbeat no matter what type of situation he's thrown into. My only complaint: while I like having the twins to portray the cluelessness of priviledged youth, I just don't care for the actress portraying the female twin (Samaire?). Maybe it's me, but I don't think she's a good actor in this role.

I really loved this episode, even as it was winding down, I couldn't wait to read your blog about it and see people's responses.
I totally agree about Seth Gabel; I was blown away by his performance last night. I love how much depth he brings to Jeremy; whenever he's on screen he's electric.
I was a bit surprised by Brian - I kind of thought he'd abandon Brian Jr. or take him back to his mother when Brian Jr. told him that he's the one who told his wife the truth. I loved seeing another side of him, especially with Nick.
I also love how Nick's slowly taking over the role that his father had as the "third parent" to the Darling kids, $1 million birthday parties and all.
I can't wait until next week - Jeremy as a valet!

OK, first thing’s first Tish didn’t reveal the truth about which child was not Tripp’s.
Paula, I was a tiny bit confused about that first line in your blog. When you said "didn't reveal," did you mean to Nick (and thus the audience) or to Tripp? She did reveal the truth to Tripp. I am sure I just got caught up in the wording though.
On that subject though, I now wonder if the writers were pointing the finger too heavily towards the twins being "different." Last week they did that with Brian, this week with the twins; especially Jeremy. Maybe they are going to toss doubt in our minds about each sibling with each passing episode.
So many bloggers to agree with...
Pinkie - DSM is also my favorite new show from the fall season. Actually, it is between this and Chuck, but this is more consistent.
phatkhatt - I felt the same way about last week's show and it being Karen-centric. She is by far my least favorite character. It does seem that this devious side of hers will add something to the character...just so it does not interfere with Nick's marriage which I fear it will in time.
KateDFW - Hideous is an understatement. I am not sure which one was worse, the two ants together or the 3 separate.
I am surprised that Brian has easily become my favorite character. I love the dry delivery of most of his lines and the depth he was able to show this week.
As others have said, this show keeps getting better.
Lastly, anamaria - I too hate that the show before it goes long and reduces the length of DSM. I think they do it to "hook" the audience from the popular previous show (in this case PP) into watching the next show. I guess in that light, it may help DSM.

Money def doesnt buy taste bcuz those ants are HIDEOUS. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i suppose.
Brian JR is the cutest thing ever and I'm glad we got to see brian sr's human side. I wasnt expectin him to take the possbility of divorce so hard.

I LOOOOOOOVEEEEEE this show. I loved every minute of tonight. But especially Brian and Brian Jr in those bunk beds.....That was classic. And Tish being Happy her grandson was there. That kid needs a little bit of happy around him. I have a feeling if the wife does take Brian back...little brain Jr might become the Harry Potter of DSM....
I also like the twins story. Not so intrigued by Simon Elder....but am excited for next weeks big poker game....should be fun.
