Episode Recap: “There’s Something about Harry”
Not the thrill-a-minute-ride that we’re used to, but not half bad. Y’all were right, this was the third of three Dexter episodes left. Sorry, my bad. I guess I was just a little over zealous for the season finale, which, if the little teasers were any indication looks ridiculously good.
Let’s start with some tasty lines: “It’s okay to take a life, so long as the city pays you for it.” “What shall I do with my hostage?” “Of course, I have a conscience; I left you a place to s**t, didn’t I? “You can’t play on my feelings. I don’t have any.”
Lundy offhandedly told Debra he would be hitting the high road after the case. It stunned poor Debra. She was really hurt, but I was happy to see them talk it out. She was so honest and sincere when she told him her feelings about it. Lundy “thought the novelty of my AARP discount would wear off and you’d get bored of me.” Debra told him, “That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said.”
Lundy received a call that one of Doakes’ aliases was being used at a gas station. Where is this going? We know he’s innocent. We know the writer’s are too good to use that as simply as a way to end the scene between Lundy and Deb. How will this puzzle piece fit all the rest?
Laguerta was in trouble for covering for Doakes. And Lundy encouraged Debra, “You can ream her yourself.” But it wasn’t until Maria brought her personal stakeout logs to Lundy that he finally shut her down himself. She’s the only person rallying for Doakes, and no one will listen, although Lundy did say he thought she might be right about Doakes’ innocence.
Some things I liked: The picture of Doakes with the giant Afro, “That is some big hair.” Dexter called his moonlighting gig a “trade.” That’s funny. The way Rita said “Dexter” just before he told her about his father’s death. It was terribly sexy.
Rita wanted to make up with Dexter, but she also wanted to string him along a little bit before she let him back in. She wanted to “hang". He seemed willing to do whatever it takes. Is it simply part of his plan of keeping up appearances, or does he really want to be with her and those kids? “This isn’t about me. It’s about (Debra and) Rita and the kids.”
Lovely Lila was back to her old tricks. She’s so self-destructive. She’s like an imploding building; only she takes everyone down with her. I was really ticked off at Angel for telling her he was spending the day with Dexter and Rita and that they were getting along well. Not a smart move. Lila took several rufies to get to Dexter through Angel. I think Angel’s going to be very surprised when she falsely rats on him. And Dexter will be able to say, “I told you so,” because he did warn Angel about her using him
Dex returned to the cabin with all good intentions to kill Doakes, but that went awry when Doakes mentioned Harry’s failings. The scene of the two of these guys chatting it out was fantastic. Doakes went from reasoning with Dexter to bargaining, from threatening to arguing, and everything in between. It was fantastically filmed with Dexter viewed from the inside of the cage. I loved it.
The flashbacks of the barely adult versions of Dexter and Debra were hilarious. Dexter actually looked like he could be the younger version of himself, but Debra reminded me of Hope Davis in American Splendor. Those bangs and silly glasses were overkill, would she really have worn those?
Did anyone notice the weird thing in the jar behind Dexter in the scene where he was talking to Debra about her birthday so many years ago? All I can say is “Fish heads, fish heads, roly, poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum.” (500 points to anyone who gets that reference!)
Dexter promised Doakes, “I won’t make you watch; I’m not uncivilized.” The blood, and the idea of Dexter’s cold-blooded killing sickened Doakes. “Stay away, just stay away from me.” Harry uttered the same words to Dexter just after he vomited something that looked oddly akin to butterscotch pudding, (which I will never be able to eat again as long as I live.)
Harry assured Dexter, “I did the right thing in training you,” but he was not able to stomach just how well he trained him. After Doakes cast a shadow of doubt as to Harry’s death, Dexter went to the Captain to find out what really happened. Harry committed suicide. Tom promised Harry he would look out for Debra and Dexter. (I’ve never seen him take much of an interest in either Deb or Dex, although he did grill Debra pretty hard last season). Is he telling the truth? The very last words Dex uttered, (and to Doakes, no less), were, “I killed my father.” He meant that “Harry walked in on what he’d created and he couldn’t live with himself.”
It was much better the second time around. The subtly of the acting drives me wild! The crazy camera angles send me into a tizzy! And our Online Video Guide will have me enjoying it all over again.

It's getting crazy, y'all! It's interesting that Doakes figured out Harry's code so quickly. I thought no one would possibly believe that the famed Harry Morgan could possibly have intentionally trained a serial killer.
When Lila got the roofies, I thought she intended to use them on Angel for some reason, but I figured out her plan to frame him once she popped the pills in his bathroom. Next week looks crazy with Lila going to the cabin and Doakes escaping and Dexter arriving to what could be a very bad scene for him.
With two episodes left, a lot has yet to happen, and I can't wait to see what's next.

All I know is that FISH HEAD FISHE HEADS used to be played all the time on Dr. Dementos radio show.

I took a fish head out to see a movie, didn't have to pay to get him in. Roly poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappacino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women....yeah! Dr Dementia baby! How about those 500 points?
The acting was fantastic and I couldn't stop thinking about the show even after it ended. The writers have really backed Dexter into a corner, how will they get him out of this?
The scenes in the cabin were brilliant. I loved the line about his conscience, I laughed my butt off. I think after that revelation about Harry, Dexter's code could possibly change. I really do like Dex and Rita and I think that he totally cares about her and her children. I think they and Deb are the 1 thing that keeps him grounded.
Wow, only 2 left and I'm just dumbfounded as to how they can get Dex clear of his crimes!

In the morning, laughy, happy fish heads... In the evening, floating in my soup!
Though the Italian restaurants and Oriental woman lines sung really fast was my favorite part of the song...the part buffybot related here.
FrenchCelt- do tell more of the preview for next week. Lila somehow finds the cabin? Doakes escapes? In fact, does anyone have a link to the preview for next week?
Calamity Jane, easy girl! You're right about "option three" and Doake's fingerprints on Dexter's tools, just easy on "the Paula", K?
I have no idea how this will end. I was hoping that Doakes and Dexter could come to some sort of agreement- an understanding- Dexter lets Doakes live but Doakes has to flee the country. Probably wouldn't work...Doakes won't let his reputation be soiled. They have to come to some agreement, right? Dexter can't kill Doakes, right? Gosh...

This is literally the worst write-up I've ever seen. As was already stated, Dexter DID NOT go to the cabin intending to kill Doax. He was there to set him up as the BHB. In addition, the order of the Dexter/Harry story is incorrect. First Doakes made a cryptic reference about Harry's death, then Dexter went to Tom and was told that Harry committed suicide, and THEN Dexter remembered Harry's reaction to Dexter's kill, leading to the conclusion that Harry committed suicide over what he had helped Dexter become.
I do not understand what Lila's plan is here. Other than annoying me to death.

I don't like soiling a Dexter blog with hostility, since Dexter is the best show on T.V. but I have a relatively long history with frustration with Paula's blogs. I just wish she'd pay more attention!
It's odd that they've started showing the previews for next week's ep. straightaway after Dexter ends. It must be to really rope viewers in now that we're getting down to the final episodes.
PREVIEW SPOILER:
In next week's episode, Lila appears to break into Dex's minivan to read the onboard navigation system (why on earth Dexter has one of those is beyond me, and it seems a little out of character, but we'll see). She then uses it to find the cabin and uses an ax to break in when she hears Doakes calling. We don't know what happens next except for that by the time Dex gets there, the cabin is empty. Goosebumps.
I think Dex was planning to let Doakes go, relying on the evidence to put him away so that he doesn't have to risk an agreement between the two of them and doesn't have to kill Doakes. In real life though, (or on other crime dramas), letting an innocent man free to point fingers and stir up exonerating evidence is a huge mistake.
I find the idea of Doakes being free terrifying for Dex, even with so much evidence against Doakes. I mean, you just never know when "stakeout logs" that Dex has no knowledge of are going to surface. Plus, didn't Doakes say information on Dexter didn't exist prior to some year, implying that his past is mysterious? Won't that be a little suspicious once Doakes comes to light and starts making a case against Dexter?
I can't wait to see how this ends.

They quit doing scenes from next week at the end of each show and now do two extended clips on the showtime Dexter website at: http://www.sho.com/site/homepage/index.do I suspect this is to increase viewership on their site. Once again, if Dexter were a true sociopath eliminating Doakes and Lila would be a no brainer, already done and over. Instead, he continues to wrestle with his very moral dilema, protect himself and those in his life, or violate the code of Harry. Am really wondering whether the "I killed Harry" insight holds up, or whether some other compelling explanation surfaces. Has to really be messing with Dexter's whole worldview and self image.

I find it interesting that they show more and more how Harry helped make Dexter a serial killer. From season one, they made it seem that it was inevitable that Dex would turn out this way and Harry just did what he had to to protect Dex and maybe do some good for the world in a twisted sort of way. But now it looks like a lot of Dexter's urges were encouraged by Harry. Especially, with his taking Dex to a crime scene and talking about how the killer keeps getting away with it and then the scene in the kitchen where he goes ballistic about him getting away with it again. He may have been shocked to see Dex in action but he certainly had a big part in getting him to that point. Maybe if he had gotten him the proper counseling as a child he could have helped Dex avoid becoming a killer.
I love Deb more and more in every episode. She really doesn't hold back anything does she? She's hysterical.
I also thought Lila was going to drug Angel and I couldn't figure out her plan but I guess this is how she gets back at Dexter, by hurting Angel?
I cannot figure out what's going to happen and I love it!

The reason SHO is now showing Dexter previews after the episode is that Brotherhood is over for the season. They were cross-promoting them before, but now there is nothing left to promote other than the finales for Dexter.

“Fish heads, fish heads, roly, poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum.”
"Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!"
Hmmm... I didn't see that in the background, but I've still got it on my TIVO, so I'll definitely go back and take a second look.
Has Bill Mumy signed on as a producer on the show? I'll have to re-roll the credits, too.
This show is soooo fracking good this season. The first was excellent - 10 stars out of 10 - but this second season scores a solid 20. Hands-down it is THE show I can't wait to see each week.

From the previews, if Lila found the cabin, wouldn.t she kill Doakes to protect Dexter and show Dexter that he cannot live without or to hold it over his head to be with her?

Not to sound like a broken record, but as several people have now said - Dexter did not go to the cabin to kill Doakes- he went there to get his fingerprints to frame him. Girl, you need to pay attention!!
Now for my take on the next two episodes. I think Lila is framing Angel to get Dexter to come back to her and if he does she will drop charges against Angel. But what I really think is that Lila will end up getting framed by Doakes and/or Dexter for the Bay Harbor murders and Lila will probably be killed (accidently by either Doakes or Dexter). I don't think the writers will kill Doakes - he is too good of an antagonist to get rid of. This is absolutely the best show and writing on tv right now. I love it and will be so sad when it ends in 2 weeks.

Dexter cannot kill Doakes, but Doakes can't be allowed to live.
Lila will kill Doakes and Dexter will kill Lila.

Nice to see the classic(loopy) song Fishheads by Barnes and Barnes getting a mention!
Loving the season so far. I am curious to see how they get Dexter out of this. We all know he CANNOT be caught or the show is over, and I agree that Doakes is too good a character to kill. If anyone has read the second Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay, Doakes gets his hands and feet cut off and his tongue cut out. Wonder if they might do something nasty like that? Lila is crazy enough maybe? Also as someone suggested, Lila might kill Doakes and Dexter kill Lila. After all, if she murdered Doakes, that would fit in with Harry's code.
Was this the first time we have seen Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C Hall as their past selves? Baaaad hair! Deb really does have Daddy issues doesn't she...anyone else creeped out by her relationship with Lundy?
