Lynette's Secret Revealed

070930desperate2.jpg
Lynette shared news of her illness with Susan and the other housewives. Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman by Ron Tom/ABC
Episode Recap: "Now You Know"

Though Bree's secret is still under wraps (literally), Lynette couldn't hide hers any longer. I don't blame her at all for playing the "cancer card" (as her mother said) in order to tell off that witchy school mom. The whole time, I was aching for Lynette to rip off her wig — and I got my wish! Cancer definitely trumps Miss "Migraine Since '87." But imagine Lynette's pain and humiliation at having to break it to her friends in that way, and admit her vulnerability.

So the four housewives made a "no more secrets" pact with each other — while several ginormous secrets remain.

First up is Bree. Even a stray pointy serving utensil stuck deep into her fake, foamy bump didn't faze her, and she and Orson remained freakishly calm and conniving, quickly thinking on their feet and making it into a joke. But from the close call, Orson discovered that Bree wants to raise Danielle's child to make up for what she deems her failure with Danielle and Andrew. When people say, "Third time's a charm," I don't think they're referring to children....

Gaby and Carlos are finally back together – but it's a secret. Their plan at the end of last season, to run away on her wedding day to Victor, was inconveniently thwarted by Edie's manipulative pseudo-suicide. For now Carlos is faking a relationship with Edie, who's willing to use any measure (including Carlos' secret $10 million in the Caymans) to keep him around. And Gaby is faking her marriage to Victor, though it seemed she did momentarily try to patch things up with him.

Poor Susan. Rarely do I feel sorry for her, because usually the comical and/or embarrassing situations she gets in are self-induced. But how was she to know that her new neighbor's husband was now her gynecologist? The good news is that her mood swings are not signs of menopause, but rather that she and Mike are having a baby. The turn of events only made the gooey newlyweds all the more elated.

The bad news is the new neighbors. Talk about creepy. Well, to be fair, the husband/step-father Adam Mayfair (Nathan Fillion — who must have a knack for playing a gyno, since he served as Keri Russell's in Waitress) — seems innocent and (for now) merely an uninvolved keeper of the family secret.

But to me, wife/mother Katherine Mayfair's (Dana Delany) plastic perfection and sugary sweetness surpass Bree's, thus covering a greater penchant for manipulation and foreshadowing even darker secrets. Susan and Julie remember Katherine and her daughter Dylan living on Wisteria Lane 12 years ago. Supposedly they have returned to take care of Katherine's aunt Mrs. Sims, but we have yet to meet her.

Dylan doesn't remember Julie or the other kids on the street; her mother has to tell her that Julie was her best friend and that licorice was her favorite childhood sweet. Right. My first thought was that something happened to the first Dylan and Katherine's trying to pass off this replacement. Then Julie discovered that Dylan has one remaining memory/dream from childhood — a man grabbing her as she slept in her room — and her mom fired the babysitter that suggested she get therapy. At the end of the hour, we found out that the Mayfairs are living in the same house as they did 12 years ago, Katherine remarking that they "didn't have a choice" about returning to Wisteria Lane. Dylan wants to move back into what was originally her bedroom. Adam and Katherine made cryptic mention of something happening in the room and Dylan not remembering. They left the room empty, the door locked. Combined with Dylan's memory/dream, if they're referring to what I think they're referring to, I'm creeped out. And confused. Thank god Mrs. McCluskey is still around. I expect her to keep a wary eye on the Mayfairs and give us the scoop!

I just hope the writers don't make the paternity of Susan's baby a question. She and Mike have only been married a month, and she was engaged to Ian almost up until then. There is such a thing as too much soap opera story!

I hate to be the first one to comment! First of all, my first thought as to Susan's pregnancy was, "Is it Mike's?"

And despite Edie's recovery, I am angry that she would use her "info" to hang on to someone knowing, deep down, that he doesn't want to be with her. But that's Edie.

Aside from that, loved the episode. A lot of intrigue coming from this episode. Have to admit I do not like Delaney, never have, in any role. The Mayfairs will be an interesting addition to the neighborhood, and we can only guess what happened to "Mom" in that room. The aughter's "forgetfulness" screams "kidnapped" but it will be hard for me to like the family because of Delaney in the mother role.

I am hooked once again. Felicia was superb, as usual.

I also thought it was weird that Susan didn't question the baby's paternity. From the way she described her cycle being off, it could very well be Ian's.

Mrs. Sims was the owner of the house that Mike lived in. Last season we saw her at the nursing home when Edie convinced her not to sublet to Carlos, so he would have to move in with her.

I think it's cool to see Dana as Katherine, especially since she was originally offered the role of Bree. Katherine and Bree have similar mannerisms, but Katherine seems less concerned with being polite. I like how she referred to the other neighbors as newcomers.

I think it's going to turn out that Dylan's father tried to run off with her and someone ended up killing him. It could be Katherine, Dylan, even Mrs. Sims. Dylan probably went through some type of hypnosis or something to repress the memory.

Once again we have adulterous Gabrielle. Now she's cheating on her current husband with her ex husband. You know as soon as John returns she'll end up cheating on Carlos with him. I wouldn't be surprised if Zach young finds out about the affair with Carlos and rats them out to her husband.

Eva Longoria Parker - doesn't really roll of the tongue. Then again, Eva Parker sounds even weirder.

I really enjoyed this episode. I thought it was written really well giving each character (old and new) a chance to show a new side of themselves that viewers did not expect. However, I am displeased with the whole Edie & Carlos relationship situation. I am anti the whole Carlos & Gabby affair (1) because I am not a big Gabby fan never was and probably will never be and (2) I really hoped that Edie & Carlos would work out and fall in love with each other. Now their relationship reminds me of Fatal Attraction and we all know how that ended! (if you don't wikipedia or rent the movie).
I am not sure about the new neighbors but I love how the scene between Bree and Katherine in regards to the pine tree in Bree's backyard and Katherine's veggie garden. However, I get the feeling the daughter is not a clone of the original daughter just has repressed memories or something. Hopefully this season will be better than last season less Gabby storyline and more Bree, Eddie and Lynette screen time.

I was too thinking about if Susans baby is Mike's. But I'm hoping it is, because I'm getting sick and tired of "Who's the Daddy" storylines on soaps. Even though those 2 been married for only a month, those 2 could of been getting it on before they were married.

Anyway, I said this during last season finale, I do not like the Bree sl. I know she has a problem with image, and wanting to raise this kid better than she did with the last 2. But come on here. Its the 21st century, and she still can raise her grandchild. However we all know that this is going to come out eventually.

I do like Gaby and Carlos together. I always did. But Harris4 comparing Edie to Alex from Fatal Attraction......is a very far stretch. Edie doesn't compare to Alex from FA, cause she was certifiable psycho. Yeah Edie is a little out there but not like that.

And I agree with bobby-j about Dylan being kidnapped by someone. I don't want a creepy sl involving the family on the block. But I'm still not to sure about the aunt situation. And good memory bobby-j about Mrs. Sims being the one who owned the house that Mike leaved in. I didn't even remember that.

Plus, I also gotta agree that Felicity was amazing, as usual. When she ripped her wig, I almost got teary eyed. But I couldn't stop laughing when she threw up in that witchy womans purse.

And Im so glad that Mrs. McCluskey is back.....her scenes with Carlos were a riot.

Am I the only one annoyed with Susan and her insecurity? Mike is obviously crazy about her. When she cried, "This marriage is doomed," I wanted to say, "If so, it's all your fault, you twit!"

I absolutely adore Orson. I'm wondering if Adam is as innocent as he seems. After all, he was the First Evil on Buffy!

I agree with you, elibu, and a few others that to make us wonder if the baby's is anyone else's other than Mike's is waaaaaaaay too much soapieness. That won't be a storyline I'll like. I thought there were a lot of funny lines with Mike and Susan and I knew right away with the way she was acting that she was pg. No, it didn't irritate me that she seemed insecure, it was hormonal, and I thought it seemed just right.

Well speaking of what has happened to Dylan. I think she is the daughter of Katherine, but something happened in the house that night. Like, where is the first husband? And they apparently left in the dead of night without saying goodbye to anyone. That will be our hopefully good mystery for the year.

I liked Carlos and Edie together, but more so I like Carlos and Gaby.

Mrs. McCluskey is still such a hoot. I laugh everytime she has a smart-a$$ line.

I also hope the paternity of Susan's baby is not a question.

And about Carlos' money...I don't understand laws concerning money but is what he is doing actually illegal? If not, so what if Carlos has $10 million? Will that make him a popular guy, much to his annoyance? Yes, probably. And if it is illegal why can't he just move the money somewhere new? Or is having the money at all, and/or moving it to these accounts the illegal part? It just seems there are ways to get around Edie's threat.

But the thing that most annoyed me last night was as the voiceover came on talking about the time of morning as kids are going to school, they show a paperboy, and as the camera pans we see children getting on a bus for school. Shouldn't the paperboy be going to school? Huh?

I realize that's very nitpicky, but that was my main thought as the episode ended!

Man Edie is b**ch! But nice, vulnerable Edie was not worth watching I guess. My first thought when she told Carlos she knew about his money was "why did you leave your bank statements lying around?!" I can think of two reasons he wouldn't want Edie telling anyone. #1 that money was part of the illegal activities he was involved in and would belong to the FBI if they found out. #2 Gaby doesn't know he still has money. He'd want to tell her that himself if/when he ever did.

I thought Bree was great. She always delivers the best lines. I didn't get the whole pine tree business from Katherine. Who says something like that the first day they meet their neighbor?

I hope this "mystery" is a good one this year.

This was one of the better episodes in a long time.

Aimee, you didn't even mention how HILARIOUS this episode was! I was so glad to see Marc Cherry's name as the sole writer of the episode--I don't remember the last time he wrote or co-wrote an episode.

Bree's rant about how their family's scandalous history would look to the neighbors: "We might as well sit on the porch and play banjos!"

Lynette's nausea during the school play: "I think I'm gonna be sick."
Fellow parent next to her: "I'm with you on that, lady."

And leave it to this show to be able to mine some real laughs from a person going through chemo, without crossing the line into tastelessness. Fantastic.

I laughed outloud throughout the episode, but I also enjoyed the fast pacing and development of each storyline. And I happen to love Dana Delany--although I'm more accostomed to liking her characters, and I get the feeling Katherine isn't going to be very likeable at all (but as lovely to look at as the other housewives).

I'm happy the season get off to such an energetic start, and I hope this episode got good ratings, so viewers who might have still been on the fence about DH were able to see how promising a season it should have.

I agree with just about everyone here so I won't rehash. Just a comment to Cruciatus about the paperboy: home schooling!

I can't wait for next week!

Cruciatus, the paperboy issue definately bugged me as well.

I don't' watch this show every week. I catch bits every now and then and read the blogs so I can keep up what's going on. I must admit though I might watch more of this season. The mystery seems to be as intriguing as the Mary Alice mystery from season 1.

I loved the episode!!! But one question has been bothering me for over 1½ seasons now...

What the heck happened to Zach and Paul Young and Felicia with her severed fingers??? No one has addressed this! Not even with Zach showing up last season to creep Gabbi out.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Marc Cherry?
