Katherine of Arrogant's Good Deed

Will Carlos and Gaby's goodbye kiss be their last? Ricardo Antonio Chavira and Eva Longoria by Ron Tom/ABC
Episode Recap: "Art Isn't Easy"

Blackmail is what Wisteria Lane does best — that, and having affairs. So Bob and Lee should fit in nicely. At first, I thought the fountain-art incident was merely a comical plot device to get the veteran neighbors buzzing about the new ones. But its jarring presence next to neatly groomed gardens and white picket fences set in motion several more interesting developments.

Lynette realized that her children escape to their tree house for a worry-less world where no one talks about cancer and white blood cells (and where, evidently, Tom's daughter is playing nice these days). Katherine's controlling nature and prim sensibilities were threatened by the new sculpture, so she ran for homeowners' association president to get the fountain removed, making still more enemies in the process. (She's been so mean and evil from the start, I didn't think that was even possible.) Lynette's passion for her family, her competitive streak and a dose of guilt led her to run against Katherine. This in turn put her friendship with Susan in danger, since Susan sided with Katherine about the fountains' removal so that she and Mike could get some sleep.

We also learned that Adam Mayfair isn't merely an ignorant pawn in Katherine's pristine suburban world. Though she continues to hold this mysterious Chicago incident over him, he still had some sound advice for her — and she listened. He wisely observed that she's been an unhappy control freak ever since she returned to Wisteria Lane, and should try to make some friends instead. Her new reign as "Katherine of Arrogant" (thanks, Lynette!) wasn't going to help in that endeavor, so she then decided the Scavos could keep their tree house.

The most intriguing revelation from the fountain's un-neighborly initiation was that Bob and Lee know all about whatever Adam Mayfair did at Chicago Memorial Hospital. Apparently it's still causing a stir; they know that the Mayfairs moved to Fairview to escape it, even though Katherine adamantly claimed the gossip was all rumor. It's so bad, in fact, that the newbies were able to use the incident as leverage: If she wants to keep her seemingly perfect life here, they'll keep quiet — as long as the fountain stays. I'm so pleased to see that Bob and Lee are already mired in the mysteries on this block.

As for the other "talent" that runs so rampant in the neighborhood, Carlos' and Gaby's affairs — past and present — are reaching a boiling point, beyond the utility of guys-only golf trips and disguising oneself as a prepubescent lawn boy riding on the front of a bicycle. It took the reappearance of Fairview's hottest gardener, John Rowland (Jesse Metcalfe), for Carlos to realize that he'd become the "new John" in Gaby's life and it was time to be honest, cut things off with Victor and Edie and reunite when the dust had settled. Unfortunately for Carlos, his conscience appeared too late: Edie paid a PI for photographic evidence of the love quadrangle she first spotted over last week's crab cakes. Tough call as to whose revenge would be worse — Edie's or Victor's.

Orson and Bree had their hands full with... not exactly an affair and not exactly blackmail. But it was Danielle's bedroom antics of nearly nine months ago that led her grandmother to nab her from the convent, and Danielle to decide to raise the baby in the retirement community. Orson and Bree followed Andrew's advice (he's smarter than all of them) and bribed her with an out-of-state college and a convertible for the chance to take over parenting duties. I'm sure she pondered that diaper service and those new senior citizen friends for all of 15 seconds.

I can't help but remember that Nathan Fillion (Adam) played an OB-GYN who had an affair with a patient (a true no-no!) in the movie Waitress, so it has occurred to me that this could be his secret on DH. At least it's more possible than his (a) being a rogue starship captain or (b) being the First Evil.

Why didn't Susan or someone with some common sense suggest a compromise about the fountain: turn it off at night when people are sleeping? Makes sense to me.

I despise Edie, and I always have. She should realize that Carlos doesn't love her. If she traps him, he'll come to hate her.

I love Mrs. McCluskey! And I can't help but feel just a little sorry for Rex's mother. The poor woman is so lonely. Even if she's reaping what she has sown, she's still a sad old lady.

I'm glad Adam finally pointed out to Katherine that she has succeeded only in making a street full of enemies since she moved back--if she hadn't backed off I would have been hoping SHE would be the next murder victim (but I know Dana Delany signed a six-year contract with the show).

Isn't it a little odd that Bob and Lee just happen to know someone who could tell them about Katherine and Adam's secret from the Chicago hospital? Even for this show, it's quite a convenient coincidence that they're now neighbors. But since I'm always ragging on people not to be so picky about DH, I won't be. But I'm intruiged.

Imzadi: I think Bob and Lee refused when Susan asked them to turn off the fountain at night, so that's why the issue became such a brouhaha.

I find myself eagerly awaiting each episode this season--it's becoming the best since season 1.

Lynette didn't call her "Katherine the Arrogant," she called her "Katherine OF Arrogant" (thus punning on Henry VIII's first wife).

I get a sense that the fact that Bob & Lee were so willing to ratchet up the conflict that quickly indicates they have more than just a random reason for moving to the neighborhood. Either that or they go around making trouble wherever they go.

I enjoyed the way Andrew advised his mother on how to deal with Danielle. He's developed into a more fun character lately--though I have a bit of a problem reconciling it with some of the outrageous things he's done in the past.

Susan did ask if they could turn off the fountain but Lee blatantly said no. Then he proceeded to turn it back on and they walked off leaving Susan standing there. I thought they were being inconsiderate considering that all they had to do was turn it on and off at reasonable hours.

Edie is getting ridiculous. She knew Carlos did not love her. He told her so last season and she has been blackmailing him to stay with her. I cannot understand how she can feel so betrayed. Edie seems more mentally unstable these days.

I am so glad someone finally put Katherine in her place. She has been unfriendly from the moment they came to Wisteria Lane. It is like enough already.

Yes, Staley, she said Katherine of Arrogant, as in Catherine of Aragon! Sorry, that's the sort of thing that happens when speed-writing these blogs! Thanks for the reminder.

My first suspicion was also that Adam got into trouble with a patient in Chicago, especially after seeing Katherine's reaction in the earlier charades episode to Gaby's flirting with him. She apparently doesn't trust him with other women. That might have been why they left Chicago but why did Katherine and Dylan leave Wisteria Lane in the first place? She obviously has her own secrets (and how long will it take someone to find the dead aunt's message under the bed?).

I admit I wasn't paying that close attention but did Bob and Lee ever mention bringing in a lawyer? It's a home owner's association not a condo with established regulations. I can't believe they would have any legal standing--maybe if Susan filed some sort of noise complaint with the police about the fountain. Unless there's some sort of local ordinance, how could Katherine force someone to remove something on private property?

Presumably they had to sign a legally-binding Homeowners Association covenant when they bought the house. High end subdivisions (which have residents who are obsessed with property value) sometimes have them, and they regulate what colors a house can be painted, whether certain things like satellite dishes or trashcans can be visible from the street, and how carefully lawns must be tended. The neighborhood on Desperate Housewives looks like that kind of place.

I'm just waiting to see how Bree will explain Danielle's bi-racial baby :)

Rhoda ... I don't think the baby is bi-racial. It's the child of Edie's nephew Austin, who split town last year.

Oh wow, you're right, I had completely forgotten about him. Here I was thinking the baby was an Applewhite! Whoops!

Was that really Jesse Metcalf in the episode? I thought they just recast John because he do not look the same. I turned it on late so I didn't see the opening credits.

I loved, loved, loved it and agree DH is getting better and better. Surprised nobody mentioned the great lines on the show. My very favorite had me almost falling off of the sofa. When Edie gave Carlos golf balls with her initials on it so that "everybody will know your balls belong to me".

I was expecting a nude sculpture and because of that didn't feel the fountain was all that bad EXCEPT for the noise it made. Right on having them find a way to keep it AND finding out about the secret Chicago past. They indeed fit into the neighborhood but I agree that there must be more to them moving there than we now know.

Wonder how long Katherine's reason for leaving Wisteria Lane will remain a secret, and whether anyone will find out about Danielle before the birth (did the promo look like her water breaks next week, or was it something worse like blood??).

Really think the show's getting better and better and there are so many plot turns and I'm having a blast watching and waiting to see what happens next!

Somebody on the cheers and jeers page (where Cheers were for DH) said nobody thinks DH and Lost are on TV anymore and someone mentioned that whomever felt that way was living under a rock and I agreed. Fantastic viewing, fun and clever and like Dirty Sexy Money it really tickles my funny bone and sharpens my senses!

Rhoda - The baby can't be an Applewhite. The Applewhite storyline ended the season before last... with last season picking up 6 months later (which is how they explained Bree & Orson's whirlwind romance). So, unless this is the longest pregnancy in tv history, it's either Austin's child or by Danielle's teacher.

This ep was boring for me... but that's prolly b/c I was switching back and forth btwn this and the World Serious :)

SOX FOREVER!
