Episode Recap: "Something's Coming"

Natural disasters create strange bedfellows — or more specifically, basement fellows. While the tornado caused two deaths tonight, it was also a catalyst for forgiveness, revelation, and new and altered friendships.

I (and others who read scoop and spoilers) found out a while ago that two characters, one man and one woman, would die. And within the first few minutes of the episode, narrator Mary Alice told us that on what began as a beautiful day would end with the loss of one housewife's husband and "a friend." I had my ideas, not to mention the knowledge that John Slattery (Victor) was bound for a second season of AMC's Mad Men. Still, I found myself at moments thinking about what the show would be like if Victor had shot Carlos dead or if Tom succumbed to his cat allergy with a fatal asthma attack. My two favorite Wisteria Lane husbands (Carlos and Tom) and the Carlos/Gaby and Tom/Lynette couples would be no more.

Thankfully these couples are still intact. But their homes and livelihoods are not. The Scavos, having just conquered cancer, now have no home for their family of seven. At least Karen McCluskey is still around. I admit I have such a soft spot for her; I jumped when she and Lynette darted out into the wind to rescue Ida's cat. And I had doubts that a mattress and a bathtub were adequate shelter.

Gaby and Edie — and then Carlos and Victor — also had some outdoor action, fighting each other as the storm grew stronger. You just knew the Cayman account file would dramatically be swept away with the wind. What was less predictable (and funnier) was how the file and the scuffle that ensued forced the two to hide out together in Edie's crawl space. Even though Edie refused to hear any deathbed confessions, Gaby apologized for lying to her and hurting her. Edie admitted falling for Carlos but not hating Gaby, and the two actually hugged, thanks to a frightening rush of wind. It appears all is forgiven (for now), and knowing that Carlos and Gaby may have lost all access to their Cayman millions probably made Edie feel a little bit better.

Carlos had a very similar conversation with his ex's ex, Victor, but it didn't end in a hug. Their fistfight took them outside and then back into the house — almost. Just as Carlos crossed the threshold and Victor loomed behind him with a crowbar: crunch. Those pristine white picket fences in perky little suburban Fairview became deadly at the hands of a tornado. (I have to mention that my mom, who's visiting me and watched the show tonight for the first time ever, said casually as they were fighting that Victor would get skewered with a fencepost. How can my mother be so right so much of the time? It's bizarre.)

I'm not a big fan of the Mike's-addiction storyline, but at least I enjoyed watching Susan confront Orson about prescribing the pills while Orson was with a patient. And once Mike's moody condition caused him to lash out and get handcuffed to a chair, as well as sent her falling down the stairs (ugh, overused plot device) and to the ER, Mike vowed to enter rehab. I was glad to see Susan threaten to leave him; he needed that reality check, even after what had already transpired. Did you see that look he gave when the nurse handed Susan her pain medication? That man needs some help.

Perhaps my favorite storyline is the whole Katherine-Bree tension, and tonight didn't disappoint. Trust Bree to sit Adam's Chicago flame down and chat/gossip over a nice cuppa tea. The approaching storms (tornado and Sylvia) forced Bree, Katherine, Adam and Orson (and Benjamin and his dirty diaper) to deal with each other, revealing secrets and relying on one another in the process. Bree's soft, compassionate side prevailed with Katherine, going so far as to hold her hand after the truth of Adam's affair with Sylvia was revealed (midstorm in Bree's house!). Even I had some sympathy for Katherine. I mean yeah, she's a witchy ice queen, but what a day that woman had! The good news for Katherine is that she won't be dealing with Sylvia (Melora Walters) anymore. That apparently unstable woman got her just desserts courtesy of the tornado, leaving the rest of the street's female contingent free (for the time being) from such a demise.

How bizarre will it be when Katherine daughter finds the note left by her now dead grandmother. it fell under the bed but i would assume later in the season it is found, untouched and unmoved by the gale fore winds. And how sure are we that Carlos is also not dead. With mary alice saying they would lose "a friend", i dont know how satisfied i would be to know the second death was a woman who had a total of 5 scenes in the past 2 episodes. that just seems like an easy out for the writers to introduce then end a storyline WAAAAAAAAAY too easily. maybe she just got swept back to the compound in Utah to poison some more people. it wasnt a crowbar Victor had used, i think it was a pipe from the noticeably absent new gay neighbors statue/fountain/lawn art.

Okay, Victor is the husband who was killed. Who is the friend? And, what do you mean "the Scavos have no home?" Lynette and Mrs. McCluskey weathered the storm in the Scavos' bathtub and came out of the Scavos' house to see that Mrs. McCluskey's house was completely destroyed and Tom and the kids are nowhere in sight.

Speculation here---Could the beloved friend be the cat lady that was a good friend of Mrs. McCluskey? She kept talking about what a good friend she was and how Lynette wasn't a friend until she needed her to babysit the kids. A shock would be Carlos! When is this show on again---not until January?

That's a good guess Brenkis - I bet you are right in that Ida the cat lady will be revealed as the friend that died. Especially given Mrs. McCluskey's speech about friendship. But didn't Mary Alice say "These four women will lose a husband and a friend" - was Ida their friend?

I'm pretty sure Lynette was screaming because Mrs. McCluskey's house was leveled, not because her own house was destroyed. Does anyone know if Tom is gone? I sure hope not. Lynette and Tom are the only semi-normal couple on Wisteria Lane.

I loooooved tonight's episode! So glad Victor is dead; there was absolutely nowhere left for this character to go. There was one other character that truly annoyed me: Lynette. She used to be my favorite character, but over time, her choices have really eroded my sense of respect for her. The way she parents her children, lying to them SO OFTEN about things that have happened, rather than finding ways to talk to them realistically and appropriately; hiding her cancer from her best friends; and now, her absolute callousness about Ida's cat. And before all the allergic people and asthmatics respond in protest: SAVE IT. There were other, more realistic solutions she could have at least considered, but her poor role-modeling and lack of empathy made her steam-roll over Ida and Mrs. McCluskey. I don't buy that the stress of the situation was a legitimate reason -- Lynette's judgment just seems to suck for the most part. Mrs. McCluskey nailed her to the wall. Reprehensible.

I too, was confused about who's house was destroyed. At first I thought it was Mrs. McCluskey's bathroom they were hiding in, but I guess it could have been Lynette's. I don't really pay that much attention to what everyone's bathroom looks like. Actually, I don't think we see bathrooms that often on this show. Why'd they run into Lynette's house anyway if Mrs. McCluskey's house had the shelter?

Anyway, I used to like Lynette but she's been kind of a bitch lately. I didn't like her little antics a few weeks ago in which she tried to dump her mother on her sister. I disliked her even more in this episode when she was trying to put the cat upstairs in harms way. I'm very allergic to cats as well, but no matter how hard of a time I have breathing I wouldn't put a cat in harms way, especially when I'm a guest in someone else's home. Sometimes Lynette acts like she's the most important person in the world, and no one else matters other than her and her family. The cat is probably dead because of Lynette now...no, wait, it probably would have died if it stayed in Mrs. Mcluskey's house. Hmmm...maybe Lynette actually saved the cat's life. Does anyone else find it unusual that I care more about the cat than Tom and his kids?

How about Victor being the husband and the friend? Could be.

I knew Victor was going to be the one who was killed. Nobody liked him. And I already know who the other person is going to be. It's a woman. Spoilers already said it that a man and a woman would be killed in a tornado. So no, Tom or Carlos aren't dead.

But anyway tonight's episode was great. I loved it. I'm not buying the reason why Katherine and her husband Adam left Chicago. There has to be more to that sl. I also think that since all the paper work was blown away concerning Carlos's off shore account, Gabi would be taken care thanks to Victor.

Did anyone else think it was strange for Bree to take the baby out in the middle of the house with a storm coming? I know there was nobody else in the house, but still it was a little strange.

Mary Alice said one lady would lose a husband and they all would lose a friend. Gaby is the friend that would have been lost had she and Carlos moved. That's my theory. I also thought that Mrs. McCluskey's house was the one destroyed. Give the writers whatever they want and all they deserve! I love this show!!

I'm 99% sure it was Mrs. McCluskey's house. Lynette was screaming because she thought Tom and the children died. (obviously, that won't be the case)

The "a friend" is Sylvia. A "friend" to Adam, that is. Mary Alice must have practiced law.

They ran to Lynette's because, while chasing the cat, they ran out of time to get to Mrs. McCluskey's. They started to go that way but then something (a trash can?) flew past them and they realized they had to get to the closest house.

But I was confused as to whose house it was too. Mrs. McCluskey didn't seem too upset if it was her own house destroyed. The closed-captioning had Lynette saying "Tom, help me!" At first I took that to mean that Lynette wanted Tom to look at their destroyed house and help her find anything of value.

But you would think she'd want to check on the status of her husband and children first...and her reaction would be more indicative of someone seeing that their family is buried (probably alive). Although I would be pretty upset if my house was destroyed, I hope I would be checking my family first.

Well, too bad we won't get to see the outcome for a long while...

i read an article that said it was mrs mcclusky's house (which actually is the original father knows best house)...and that the next episode is written, but they are not going to show it until the strike is over so they can show all the rest of the episodes in a row...lynette was screaming because her entire family was in that house
