Episode Recap: "Hello, Little Girl"

The disembodied voice of Mary-Alice informed us that this week's episode of Desperate Housewives is about people breaking the rules. And while Wisteria Lane has never been a paragon of morality, it did seem like our girls have gotten themselves into a lot of hot water. To wit:

Pants on fire So this week there was a lot of interesting stuff about Lynette and Tom trusting each other and/or believing each other when they talk… real... slow… but ultimately this week's storyline seemed to serve as a mere set-up for what comes next.

Yes, as much as my perverse masculine pride wanted New Tom to be an arsonist (is that weird?), it seems those of you who posted last week that the fire-starters were among the Scavo offspring were right. Well done! It was Preston and Porter who just wanted that man to go away, so – to paraphrase Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas in VH1's Behind the Music: TLC – they buuuuuuurned Rick's house down.

As I learned many years ago in those awesome Mormon PSAs about lying (what's up, Carlton Banks?), lying isn't a good idea. But those big fat liars the Scavos are now on a slippery slope, and you can bet that there are more juicy fibs in their future.

Women are so emotional Poor Teri Hatcher, saddled as she is with all the pregnant, hormonal, "silent-movie heroine" theatrics. True, she is about three months more pregnant than she was last week, which must be a difficult adjustment. But at least it facilitated Bree's prescient speech about dealing with emotion. Of course it's a housekeeping metaphor: Picture an empty box, put it in an empty closet, and go back and deal with the emotion later, in private, like a lady.

By the end of the episode, it seems clear that both ladies, despite their differing approaches, know how to deal with emotion. For Susan, it means confronting Orson in the middle of the night – pregnancy lingerie and all – about his involvement in Mike's coma. Bree, on the other hand, promptly throws the attempted murderer out. Marcia Cross' pinched angry face scares the hell out of me, since it reminds me of the time I got caught skipping school and lying about it to my parents. Little did Mom know she could have won an Emmy for that face.

On a happier note, I'm excited to see how Bree and Katherine's "creative friction" will manifest itself in the coming weeks. One detail though: Did anyone else think it was hilarious when Bree initially turned down Katherine's offer because of the new baby? How much bother could little Benjamin Hodge be? That kid is more invisible than Wonder Woman's plane.

Canine teeth There's a new bitch in the Solis household, and – two legs or four – Gaby doesn't like the competition. I mean, come on, adorable seeing-eye-dog Roxy can't even fetch the remote or toast a bagel, like her fictional seeing-eye monkey can! Interestingly, it's Edie (aka Three Divorce Annie) who shows up with a box of doggie biscuits and some surprisingly rational advice.

This is the third week of Gaby learning the same lesson: that her blind husband might deserve a little kindness from his wife. I can understand that this particular learning curve might be a little steep for someone like Gaby, but let's hope she figures it out soon so we can move on to better things, like Mallory Keaton herself arriving next week to rent a room!

Father knows... what exactly? I have to admit that Lyndsy Fonseca's acting skills don't exactly set my world on fire. That said, the budding relationship between her and "Officer Wayne Davis" (the solid Gary Cole) has me intrigued. I mean, is he really Katherine's ex-husband? And if so, who is resting in peace in that tastefully marked grave? Ready for my wild theory? Katherine actually accidentally killed her daughter Dylan, and then ran out and obtained another little girl, real-quick-like. That would explain why Dylan II can't remember her childhood. It would not, however, explain why Wayne thinks that Dylan II has his nose or what she saw on that scrap of paper her dearly departed great-aunt left behind.

So don't listen to me. Or do. I hear that the season finale – which is but a few weeks from now – will reveal Katherine's secret, and that its revelation will involve all the Housewives, and possibly catapult the series into its much-teased biggest twist yet.

In the meantime, next week promises the aforementioned addition of Justine Bateman to the cast; Orson moves in with Edie (the hell?); and the return of Susan's ex Karl!

What do you think? With only three episodes left, it seems the writers have a lot of ground to cover. What is Katherine's secret? Will the Scavo brats go to juvie? Will Bree be a Van De Kamp again? Will Susan give birth next week? So many questions…

Still hard to believe that Marc Cherry can not cast an African American in any substantial role and now Justine Bateman will join the show. It's a terrific cast already but why not give it some "color"??

I am liking Susan less & less as the show goes on. I wish she tried to "prove me wrong" and discussed Orson with Mike before storming over there. Bree's right--Susan is NOT a lady.

Bree, however, is a hypocrite. Her son Andrew ran down Mrs. Solis, who subsequently died. But Mike is alive, married to Susan (which I now think may be a fate worse than death), and having a child. She & Rex covered up the evidence for Andrew.

And has everyone, the writers included, forgotten that Mike pushed Orson off the roof of the hospital? As a KM fan dating back to Dune & Twin Peaks, I'm definitely on his side. I'm not sure moving in with Edie was the right thing for him to do, though.

I must admit I thought Kayla was in on the arson. Glad to see she wasn't. I assume Lynnette & Tom will cover up for their wayward kids, however. It seems to be the thing to do on Wisteria Lane (see above). My bet is no juvie for those boys!

Ok I thought I had post this earlier, but for some reason it didn't take. Or I must of forgotten to click "Leave a Comment" to post it.

But anyway, I also knew that the Scavo twins set the fire. However I still would of liked it if Rick was the one who set the fire and lied just to set up Tom. And ur right Imzadi that Tom and Lynnette would cover up their lil arsonist.

Mickey, I sorta agree with you that Katherine accidentally killed her daughter and then kidnapped this girl as a replacement Dylan. However, Katherine told her husband Adam the full details of what happened(or she could of told him her a fake version of what really happened. However wouldn't made more sense for him to go to police about his soon to be ex-wife? Or wouldn't it be better for him to use Katherine's shady past as a bargaining chip(I think the last part might happen).

JB is going to be playing a coke dealer. Do you really want the shows next minority role to be a drug dealer after the murderous Applewhites?

I know we always have to suspend reality to some degree on DH- but explain how a matchbook could've survived the entire building burning down. Also- it was implied when Rick confronted Tom that the matchbook he was holding was the same one found by his backdoor. Wouldn't the police have kept that?

The Scavo twins might have set the fire, but I give those little brats Kudos for coming clean with mom!! They are writing them to be better people than in the past!!
I loved the whole Gaby and the dog, but I really don't think that the dog would have growled at her and no way would any group that trains seeing eye dogs allow the animal in the home without meeting everyone a LOT before hand!

I forgot to say that, as a C.S.I. fan, I was pleased to see lab rat Archie guesting as the seeing-eye dog handler.
Way to go, Archie!

And I'm a big Gary Cole fan. He can play evil (Fatal Vision, American Gothic), humorous (The Brady Bunch Movie, Office Space), and heroic (Crusade, Midnight Caller). Please stay a while

SPOILER

I was also glad to see that we'll get one more episode with Nathan Fillion (Adam), according to SpoilerFix.

I am hoping that Orson moving in with Edie, it will finally give Edie a story line.

Trombone...I hear what you're saying, but Wisteria Lane is a white neighborhood. I live in a town with a similar demographic and it's never more obvious than on "Charter Day." Hudreds of people, all of them white. Go to any of our local restaurants and shops, and you'll see the same thing. It may not be right, but it's the way it is. If you look at shows like Grey's Anatomy, which takes place in Seattle, the demographic of the show's cast reflect the show's location.

Carlos & Gaby are Hispanic. Does that count?

Someone refresh me....I thought Mike pushed Orson off the roof because he found out that's who ran over him? (Seemed like we already solved this problem once.)

I do hope Orson and Bree ultimately reconcile - they seem so made for each other.

Nathan Fillion - I love him! Some posters comments give me the impression he's not staying around Wisteria Lane. It that true?

Can someone please correct me if wrong? Last week didn't the man just circle a picture of Dillan (sorry if misspelled). This week in the police car Dillan's Father (?) had a newspaper with both Dillan and Katherine circled.

Did anyone else think it was hilarious when Bree initially turned down Katherine's offer because of the new baby? How much bother could little Benjamin Hodge be? That kid is more invisible than Wonder Woman's plane.

Ha! Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Since Bree doesn’t work, where is the baby? Day care? Is “Aunt Danielle” babysitting?

Maybe it’s because I’m a dog lover and Golden Retriever owner no less, but Gaby really got on my nerves tonight. Her storyline is so predictable each week. Every episode is about her being shallow, superficial and bitchy and then the final scene does something to redeem her. Although Gaby’s antics are usually pretty funny, I’m on Team Roxy! Woof!

Imzadi, you’re right! I had completely forgotten about Andrew running over Mama Solis. Hypocrite indeed! Regarding the fact that Mike pushed Orson off the roof, does anyone know besides the two of them? That could be why Mike is so willing to forgive. I love Kyle M. and Bree & Orson together so I hope this situation with Edie is very temporary. Edie’s house is the sanctuary for rejected husbands!

Knowing how this show operates, they will get the boys out of a juvie sentence somehow. Maybe the fire the boys set fizzled out and Rick discovered it, only to re-ignite the fire himself in an attempt to frame Tom. Far fetched I know, but I just can’t see the twins getting carted off to juvie, never to be heard from again (although we can hope right!)
