May 20, 2007: Getting Married Today
Well, they said the final scene would be a shocker, and they were right. I am speechless. You know how much I love my Edie. Would it be too much to ask to have Carlos heroically and miraculously walk in during the very first scene this fall and save her? I do not want this show to go on without Nicollette Sheridan. Yes, Edie is not one of the four main housewives, but the show would not be the same without her. Soap operas have had people hang themselves and be saved at the last minute. Until I get a confirmation, I'm going to spend this entire summer believing Edie is not dead. Just call me DID "Dave In Denial."
Except for that ending, I was very happy with this season's finale episode. I thought it had the perfect Desperate Housewives blend of drama and comedy. I expected to be satisfied after seeing that departing coexecutive producer Joe Keenan was one of the writers (along with talented fellow coexec producer Kevin Murphy). Besides having the same job title for all those years of Frasier, Joe also cowrote this season's instant classic episode, "Bang." So when I saw his name in the opening credits, I thought: "This is going to be good." What a wonderfully romantic ending-before-the-ending when Susan surprised Mike with the spur-of-the-moment wedding in the woods, equipped with Gabrielle's minister (Steve Tyler) and a witness/maid of honor in Julie. Who knew Julie (Andrea Bowen) would have the funniest line in the episode? The minister to Susan and Mike: "Are you ready?" Julie: "Are you kidding? They've been dragging this thing out for three years." You could tell Mike was getting stressed out by all the wedding prep and trying to make extra money as a 24-hour "ninja plumber" to give Susan the big wedding she wanted. Good for Susan for finally doing the right thing. I think it was Mike's "I'm not Ian" speech that hit home the most for her.
Marcia Cross indeed gave us a spoiler during that Letterman appearance weeks ago when she said Bree would return with a noticeable difference. One of you smart commenters suggested Bree would be faking a pregnancy to cover up the fact that her slutty daughter Danielle was pregnant with Edie's slutty nephew Austin's baby. How very Bree of Bree to go through so much trouble to avoid being the gossip talk of Wisteria Lane, hiding Danielle away so she'll never be seen by anyone until after "Brees" baby is born. And how very Orson of Orson to go along with the scam. I loved the scene when Orson helped Bree take off the fake pregnancy belly and reminded her she'd need to switch to the 6-month version soon. Oh, Bree. Why do I know that the devilish Andrew will be the one to spoil the secret?
I had heard that Gaby and Carlos were going to hook up, but most of the stuff I read said Gaby was going to sleep with Carlos the night before her wedding to Victor, just to get it out of her system. I much preferred what actually happened. Both Gaby and Carlos were in miserable situations Gaby overheard Victor and his dad B.J., I mean Milton (Mike Farrell) discussing how Gaby will be "bringing in the Latino vote" for his race for governor (against her will), and poor Carlos found out Edie was still on the pill. Speaking of that clichιd finding-the-birth-control-pills scene: like Edie would be that stupid to keep them in her purse! I did laugh at the Carlos/paper-boy Danny scene with Carlos going into Edie's purse to pay Danny and finding the pills. Danny (Ridge Canipe): "What's that?" Carlos: "It's birth control pills." Danny: "I'm gonna need cash." So it was good timing for Gaby and Carlos to passionately make out on that couch during the wedding reception they both really needed it. You know Gaby won't stay married to Victor much longer.
In the grand tradition of casting the absolute best veteran actors in the business to play the parents of the characters, in came the fabulous Polly Bergen as Stella, Lynette's estranged alcoholic mother. I have been a fan of Polly's without exaggeration my entire life, ever since my parents had me watch the Doris Day/James Garner film Move Over, Darling as a child. (Please rent it you won't be sorry.) Stella is a tough cookie, but I was glad Lynette didn't kick her out like she had planned. Since Stella survived breast cancer when Lynette was 13, it will be a tough-love learning experience to have Stella around during the next three months of chemo. That line of Stella's was a real kick in the ass for Lynette: "You can fight me or you can fight the cancer. Trust me you won't have the strength to do both." Stella bonding with Kayla was great, pumping her for info about Lynette and Rick. Stella got her groove back with that earlier line to Tom asking him not to tip the cab driver because "the SOB wouldn't let me smoke." It made me laugh and think of several of my aunts and friends of my own mother.
Other highlights: I enjoyed seeing TV Guide writer extraordinaire and my pal Mary Murphy in her cameo as one of the wedding guests. She was there to write her DH story for the magazine. Nice perk, Mary! I also enjoyed TV veteran K Callen as Edie's dead mother, who appeared in a nightmare of Edie's. Every time I mention K (OK it's only been once before), I make it a point to include that she played the woman who came out to Archie and Edith in one of my all-time favorite episodes of All in the Family as the lover of the deceased at the wake of cousin Liz. Best line was Archie's: "Liz... was a lez?" Here's hoping that the next time Edie speaks to her mama, they won't both be dead. I always like when they give Ricardo Antonio Chavira funny lines as Carlos, and his best one was when he told Gaby he was planning on skipping the ceremony portion of her wedding: "I don't want to make a scene. You'll vow 'till death do us part' I'll bust out laughing. People will stare." Gaby: "Reception starts at 4." Later, his line to Edie when he was attempting to make her pregnant was hilarious: "Nature is not on our side anymore. You're no spring chicken. Those eggs aren't exactly farm fresh." Edie: "OK stop referring to me as poultry!" Nice to see Kathryn Joosten back as Mrs. McCluskey. Of course, she and Ida (the two Gladys Kravitzes of Wisteria Lane) had to be the ones to overhear Carlos and Edie arguing at the wedding.
I hate that we have to wait almost four months for the next new episode. Until then, hang in there, Edie. I pray for your survival.

I literally yelled "Oh My God" at the end of this episode.
I think she will be back because we probably would have heard if Nicolette was leaving the show.
My first thought was that Edie would be taking over the Mary Alice narrator role. At least we would have Edie in some form still on the show.

First of all Edie- I know that Edie didnt try to kill hang herself with a silk scarf...did she? Or are they making it seem that she tried to kill herself with a silk scarf? Edie will be back, Nicolette has some of the best lines on DH.
Carlos-I find it a little hiporcritcle that Carlos chastized Edie for secretly taking birth control pills....when he himself tampered with Gabi's pills and thats how she ended up pregnant herself.
Bree- Im a little upset about the bree storyline. I know Bree lives in the "50's, 40's or whatever decade fantasy world" but come on...this is the 21st century. This happens everyday. and whats going to happen when someone finds out the truth. And I agree Dave, that Andrew will be the one who will spill the beans.
Susan-Yeah that was so romantic. I had a feeling that Susan would try to pull something like that. And Mike is so sweet, in trying to earn extra money so that Susan could have her dream wedding.
Lynette-at first i loved her mom. when she asked lynette..is that toms little b-a-s-t...im still laughing at that one. but then it just went down south from there. i had no idea that lynette had a mother like that. Next season is going to be great.
Gabi- I dont like Victor, I hope she leaves him...but thats not going to happen. But I still want Gabi and Carlos together.
I will always love the two Gladys Kravitez.
Oh and Dave, you forgot that K Callen played Martha Kent on Lois and Clark. And I do remember that episode of All in the Family.
I always hate season finales....the summer months go by so slow to me.

The best part of this weird season has been more Edie. They CANNOT kill her off if they know what's good for the show.
Looking forward to see how Gaby will turn the tables on Victor.
I really thought they were going to have Mike get into an accident when Susan sent him on that fake plumbing call to lure him to the wedding. So glad they didn't go down that road.
I was one of those people who knew that Bree was going to be faking a pregnancy to cover for that annoying daughter of hers. But like the previous poster, why? Seems a bit ridiculous to me. Glad to have bree back but big "who cares" to this story.

"Hang" in there? You crack me up! I also think Edie will be rescued, or her "scarf" will break and she will say something hilarious. I can see the Bree story line being very comical. I think that Gaby will become pregnant through her tryst with Carlos, but Victor will not let her go easily. Can't wait until next season!

The way these kinds of things go on this show, what'll probably happen is this: Edie's attempt fails miserably when the scarf comes untied, or the rafter breaks, and she falls clumsily and embarrassingly to the floor.
The wedding in the woods (with all the paper lanterns) was lovely, and a nice topper to the show.

I hope edie is not gone. I feel like we finally saw here as a 3 dimensional character this season and to kill her now would be a huge loss for the show. i felt like that was tacked on for shock at the end. The rest of the episode was great. I see Gaby really embarassing Victor in the beginning of next season on purpose, which will lead into him beating her before she finally escapes. I think the bree story line is great and her presence is appreciated on the show. Julie needs to lose the blond hair, its not attractive on her. otherwise this season was a huge step up and with the new plots with Lynettes mom and Gaby's bad marriage next season should be good.

What an ending! Now that was a season finale! Although I hope Edie's not dead.
Loved the Gaby/Carlos hook-up. I am such a John Slattery fan, but Victor's a pig.
On the other hand, I've never been a Susan fan, but I did love their surprise, private wedding. I can't think of a more beautiful way for them to be married.
Glad Bree and Orson are back!

I thought it was a great episode (but I'm such a pushover for this show). Great to have Bree/Marcia Cross back. But I REALLY hope Edie's scarf or whatever she used will snap or tear--or perhaps someone (Carlos?) will come to her rescue with seconds to spare.
The producers can't be so stupid as to actually let Nicolette Sheridan go.
One major gripe--does anyone really buy that Mike Farrell is playing Victor's FATHER? Perhaps an older brother, but come on. Those guys don't look more than 5 or 10 years apart. Yeah, Victor might be prematurely gray, if you want to make a feeble justification, but I don't buy it. As much as I like Farrell, what a bizarre choice. I couldn't get past it in their scenes together.
Other than that, it was a strong season finale and I'll miss the show all summer!

I personally love the new Bree storyline - I think the fact that they think they have to pull this off to save face in this day and age is what makes it so funny! Can't wait....
I haven't heard anything about Nicolette Sheridan leaving the show, so I'm hoping this is resolved somehow other than her joining Mary Alice in that big announcer booth in the sky. Her narrative was particularly poignant in that scene.

Victor was born in 1963 and Mike Farrel in 1939 so he very well can be his dad. V is just prematurely gray

Great episode. Gabbys husband is horrible. Getting married will help him with the hispanic vote if he runs for governor. Now Gabby is stuck for a while.

It was so good to have Bree back. I laughed when she nearly swooned over Orson's remark about packing the clothes in tissue paper. Tom had a great line about forgiveness too. Lynette is the one suffering most by holding on to all that (deserved) anger toward her mom. Gotta hand it to the mom for being willing to endure her daughter's enmity in order to help Lynette when she needs it. That takes some courage.

HA! That was ME that said that Bree would fake Danielle's pregnancy and try to pass the kid off as her own!
I love when I'm right!
Great finale! Can't wait for the fall!
Yipppeee!

Marc Cherry - I am putting you on notice now! Nicollette Sheridan is one of the best things about Desperate Housewives. Edie CAN NOT DIE! There had better be some last minute rescue for her on the first episode of season 4. I will personally start the "Let's Save Edie" web-site and write-in campaign to ABC protesting her demise. Please don't make the same mistake that Knots Landing did when they killed off Constance McCashion's "Laura" character. Nicollette fans, I urge you to stand up and be heard! We Want Edie!!!!!!!!!!!!
