Episode Recap: Eviction Night 5
Some people may say that Marlee Matlin just couldn't overcome her disability and that's why she was voted off of the show tonight. I would disagree completely. I don't think I understood the magnitude of what she did every week until she was giving her speech at the end. She made me realize how lucky I am to have all my senses and how I take it all for granted. She started out well but had two bad weeks in a row and that was her demise. I can't say what went wrong, but we all saw in the beginning that she can dance despite being deaf so that had nothing to do with it. Maybe the dances just got a bit too difficult for her. The voters made the right choice, but it was still sort of sad.
The show started out like usual with a recap of the previous night's dances and some comments from the celebs thrown in. Usually nothing of note happens during this segment, but I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow to Shannon and Derek. I actually like her but she was being a bit of a cry baby and the way Derek threw everyone else under the bus to defend her sounded a bit bitter. Am I wrong?
I thought Ashlee Simpson was a rocker chick. Why was she dressed like her sister singing a pop song? I'm not really into her music, but I liked her raspy voice and it went well with the rock genre. Or should I say rock-ish genre. Is this whole "engagement" some big stunt to get publicity? Did I even ask that question — of course it is! No way does Pete Wentz need to marry that chick now. That ring was pretty sweet though. She's very cute so I just don't want to see her all washed up and making crappy movies that barely make it to theaters while Pete moves onto someone cooler. Good luck, Ash. Keep your own bank account.
Usually the Macy's dance bores me but I dug the Irish dancing. I loved when Michael Flatley performed last season so this shiz was right up my alley. I realize it's a pretty lame alley, but it's mine. I wouldn't have thought people outside the "Lord of the Dance" sphere actually did this sort of dancing until I saw tons of little girls all decked out in Celtic outfits and curly wigs at a St. Patrick's Day parade last year. Apparently it's a big deal in the Philly suburbs.
Trumpets please! It's time for the best fluff segment in the history of the show — the mini dancers! This time it's the 13 and under category so the dances are getting a bit more difficult and, therefore, more entertaining. Brandon and Brittany did a decent cha-cha but had nothing interesting to offer. By far the most mystifying part of this segment was the height and weight difference of the second pair. Liza is 12 but looked 25. She must be very popular. Austin was 12 and looked 10. Automatically I favored them because this made me laugh. However, their samba was very good despite a fall at the end because Austin was not able to support Liza's weight. The uninteresting pair won.
After that, we got an inside look at how the judges, well, judge! It was good to hear them admit it's easy for them to miss something and it's a quick decision so maybe they aren't getting it 100% correct. Somehow I didn't believe Len when he said he feels bad criticizing the dancers. I know he thrives on those boos from the audience!
I don't know how Mario can have the second highest score for the week and still end up in the bottom two. I love him but no one seems to be on my side. It must be lack of fan base. Let me know what all of you out there feel about him. He's young, sexy and he can dance! He even makes up cute rhymes – "we got two nines and a ten we gotta do it again." Corny or not I ate it up! Luckily, he was spared and Marlee was the one having her last dance. Did anyone else find it oddly funny that "Dust in the Wind" was their song? I totally chuckled. I was surprised to learn that she and Tom were such good friends. Tom, the Fonz, who's next? If I saw Oprah, I would have died. His goodbye to her was very sweet. Was her exit sweet for you or no? Tell me who you thought should have gone and who needs to watch their back next week. Will Marissa's roll continue? We'll find out next Monday as the celebs have two dances to nail down. See you then!

Although I knew that Marlee would probably go, Shannon SHOULD HAVE gone! At least Marlee can dance and move her hips!
And those crocodile tears, her "I moved my hips when Derek twirled me...I moved my hips when I did...I moved my hips...are you freakin' kidding me?" wah, wah, wah.
I'm sorry, I'm not usually so witchy, but Shannon irritates and gets on my every last nerve! And Derek blaming the judges for overscoring? What? They've been doing this for several seasons now, and he's just NOW calling them out for it? I sooo wanted them gone.
I loved the mini dancers and I actually liked couple number one, and how she effortlessly and skillfully removed the end of her dress from her shoe!
And the Riverdance! Enjoyed it much, much better than Flatley's last season.
I was so worried that Mark and Kristi would leave because, yes, just last season, week six, Sabrina got booted, and she had also gotten high scores.
Now that Marlee's gone, all my votes are going to Kristi.
And to sound like a broken record, if Jason is a clod, then Shannon's his female counterpart: yes, a female clod. There. I said it.

No surprise tonight that Marlee got cut. She was great, but it was time for her to go.
I'm sure Derek would like to redo last night's confessional - yikes. Probably not the wisest thing to call out everybody else, just cause you're mad. Makes me think they really are dating, cause he got really defensive. Well, I guess I can understand, cause we've all been there - something happens that really upsets us, and we end up getting caught up in the moment, saying things that we later regret. I love Derek, but I will admit that Shannon is starting to bother me a bit. Hopefully she'll take the judges suggestions to heart and work on some things for next week.
As for Mario being in the bottom two, well, I guess someone had to be there, right? Looks like other people weren't thrilled with his rumba either, or maybe it's the fan base thing, or maybe people just don't like Karina. Who knows, but next week should be interesting...

I think Derek and Shannon did themselves in with the tears and anger show they put on! I still wonder if all this is a bit of an act...

Tonight was interesting for me because for some reason my DVR didn't record DWTS last night, so I watched the results show before I watched the program online just now. Of course, I didn't vote since I didn't know who to vote for, but having just seen it, I would have voted for Kristy and Cristian. I also thought Shannon's and Derek's whining was over the top, but after seeing the dances close up [you can see much more details on the computer screen], I did notice a lift from Mario. As much as I enjoyed their dance, they should not have gotten a 10 with a lift. The judges definitely play favorites. I was watching Derek's face as the scores for the other dancers came in [Shannon was absent most of the time in the back room], and I could tell he was very unhappy. If Shannon was offscreen crying and he cares about her, that would explain his outburst. But they will have to buck up or they will lose votes because of the whining. Marissa did that the first couple of weeks, but she decided to get to work and it shows.

I hope this show is not Derek's ondoing because he sounded like a spoilsport. The judges always liked his choreography and seemed to respect him. I was surprised to hear/see his comments because he seemed to be reacting to Shannon's tears. Not good. He appears to be too emotionally involved. Here's hoping they can pull it together for next week and they can wow the judges, and here's hoping the judges don't hold his remarks against him! An apology was given--hope it meant something! Other than that, the right person was sent home. Much as I respect Marlee, it was the right decision. She should be relieved she doesn't have to learn two more dances! I would be!

I was so worried that Mark and Kristi would leave because, yes, just last season, week six, Sabrina got booted, and she had also gotten high scores.
I, too, went into tonight's results remembering Sabrina's surprise elimination this very same week in the competition last season. I knew the same could not happen to Kristi, though, because she had scored the highest last night. Last year, the week Sabrina left was when she did not dance as well and the judges gave her a 25 out of 30. Because her score placed her in the middle of the pack, she was not ranked high enough to overcome the lack of votes. But I figured there would be a surprise for someone this week. Mario obviously is getting very few votes to be in the bottom two. Had the judges scored him any lower, Mario would have been going home tonight. The ONLY part I like about the results shows is the addition of the tiny dancers (and finding out the results of the celebrity competition). Krista, I do not know how you could think the first mini dancer couple was uninteresting. They had a wonderfully choreographed and beautifully performed dance. The second couple were good individual dancers but very oddly paired. I have agreed with the judges' choice every week. I knew Marlee would go and felt it was the right time, but I am sad to say goodbye to Fabian - he has done a good job. My personal opinion is that because he is young, Mario tends to show off his prideful side and has not given the viewers more of his real self. The confessional was one of the only times we've seen an honest, fun guy. I also think people are not that fond of Karina. She comes off as stuck up and she breaks the rules (how many times has she been called out for lifts?). Mario may be saved from elimination next week, though, by Derek's tirade and Shannon's tears. They did apologize, but I think that really turned off a lot of people who have gotten behind Shannon. Derek was correct in what he said, but went overboard in the way he said it. Looking forward to next week as the competition gets tougher!

Shannon and Derek sabotaged themselves, and they'll hasve to do some damage control. I'm sure, though, this was yet another bad Monday for them, since the photos came out and the two (and apparently everybody on the show) was grilled for one story or another. That might have created a tense situation since they apparently didn't want this out for one reason or another; maybe Shannon or Derek had to ake an uncomfortable phone call, if you know what I mean. Actually, the clips convinced of the relationship (whatever it might be) more than the photos.
They started to do some damage control tonight and they'll need to do some more next week, -and knock it out of the park. Y'know, Derek had the same situation with the always fragile Jenni Garth last season, -just without the somethin'-somethin'.
As far as the comments about the judging, -which were mostly true, -Tony constantly fights and comments negatively on the judging and so did Max, so it probably won't have any long-term repercussions.

There's quite a fury of anti shannon and derek posts going on at the dwts message boards. And I am joining that viewer "Jeer". The behavior showed on those clips was just whiny, immature, and totally unprofessional. obviously we're seeing tightly edited clips, but even that on air apology felt stupid, like when a child who's been chastised apologizes to mommy and daddy in order to get out of trouble- not really meaning it but just saying what's expected. derek at least did seem more sincere about the apology but still overall LAME!
I posted a thread last week that shannon was falling into dwts entitlement syndrome, which is when the celebs start believing too highly of their own abilities aqnd that they could never be scored less than a 8 or 9, as shannon cried out tonight (other celebs w/ the syndrome- marissa acted this way after her jive, last season: marie, jane (and whiny tony), and billy ray, clyde, etc). Sometimes they get a 9/10 but the next dance could be scored a 7 or 8, if the dance isn't fully polished and performed. and then the celebs like to cry "but we're not dancers, the judges being too hard...." whatever. well most of the other shannon fans took great offense to the word "entitled", saying she is a perfectionist, and that she's too hard on herself, a beautiful sensitive soul... Sorry, not buying that. I give her that she had 2 stressful weeks with derek's hospitalizations, but this week just epitomizes the ugly side of entitlement and misguided sense of one's dance abilities, and un-professionalism, even if it was in the emotional heat of the moment. These are 2 people who should be used to public scrutiny and have a better handle on how to handle their outbursts more than us normal folks would. How shannon ever succeeds in poker is way beyond me (does she have a poker face??) Yes, get angry at the judges but channel that into your dances, not into constantly crying and blaming them for not choosing you as the one they want to win. (yeah, she gave a tv intv. last nite to an LA station that judges have chosen their picks and are guiding the audience to pick their way...)

I like Shannon and this didn't alter my opinion of her one bit. Derek made a legit point and I know what it's like to be so angry and outraged that you go over the top and say some things that, while true, may have been better left unsaid. I think they saw they went a little overboard in the confessional and felt bad about how they came across, and I completely bought and appreciated the apologies. I don't think either one was insincere, although I do think they're tired of Samantha's pathetic attempts to cajole a confession of romance between them.
Riverdance was awesome...way better than that poseur Michael Flatley, who was never as good as Riverdance as a whole (and Jean Butler was always better than him when they both were in Riverdance over 10 years ago). Irish step dancing is one of my favorites.
I like Ashlee Simpson. She does more rock-pop usually, but this seemed to be more of a dance-pop song. It was fine, but I'd rather have seen the DWTS pros dancing instead of the two couples that did perform while Ashlee was on stage.
Wow, that Liza girl did not seem like a 12 year old. But maybe that was more due to the contrast with her partner, because she looked so tall standing next to him, and yet she's barely 5'2", and so is still fairly short. The other girl, with her partial deafness, was more impressive overall, though, and so the other couple deserved to advance.
Marlee was the right choice to go this week, but it will be interesting to see what happens next week since really, the worst three stars that remain are Marissa, Shannon, and Jason, and I think perhaps that should be the order in which they depart.

I like Mario, but I can't stand Karina! Unfortunately for Mario, if the voters feel the same way, that might sway their vote too!

I used to like Shannon but her & Derek on getting on my nerves.I think Mario's age hurts him the I think the avergae DWTS veiwer is older and the same thing that hurt Sabrina her age will hurt him. I agree it was Marlees time to go. Next week we get 2 dances so we will see more but right now almost everyone agrees it is Kristi's Mirror ball to lose. I think Jason who I don't think is a clod and now Cristian or Mario should be in the final 3. I know your suppossed to vote for the celebrity but I think people like Cherly and Edyta a lot more than Karina. I used to think Shannon but her attitude is going to turn off a lot of people and I don't think Marissa can go that far.

I agree with everyone who felt Shannon went overboard with her whining (how could I disagree?) but what really shocked me was Derek's rant against the judging of the other couples. That was purely unprofessional. I know other pro dancers have complained, notably Tony and Maks, but we have not seen the bitter, spiteful comments like last night, only read about them. This is going to hurt Shannon and Derek, and it should. It reminds me very much of Willa and Maks from a few seasons ago. The fans weren't that invested in Willa to begin with. Sure, there was a hint of a romance, but the celeb dancer was just not that great, and juicy gossip can take you only so far.
I think it is neat that people are outing themselves on being Riverdance fans. My husband stunned me last night by announcing that he too intended to watch the Riverdance segment (instead of switching to the White Sox lol). Anyway, I thought it was pretty good too.
I must confess to being a little creeped out by the tiny dancers. I watch them, and I pick my favorite couple, but I don't love them. I think they are too young for the spandex and sequins. I was glad to hear Brandon is just doing this for fun and his real ambition is to play baseball. Until Austin gets a little taller and puts on a few more lbs, he and Liza should not dance together IMO.
Did not watch Ashlee Simpson. Not a fan at all.
I was so glad to see Marlee's departure handled with class and grace and an air of celebration. Very touching. As to Mario and Karina - she is my least favorite among the female pros, and he does have that smirk going. He is the best remaining male celeb dancer by far, but they need to tone down their personalities. Yikes.

Shannon needs to get booted off without a box of Kleenex to stop her obviously phony and stupid tears. Get up on it, you are not that great, and the he is hurt, she is crying thing is so over for me. I felt badly for Marlee but was thrilled that she did so well for as long as she did. I think the results can just about be mailed in unless Kristy falls for the next three weeks, she is gonna be crowned queen. I still hate the results show, it hangs in there too long, I don't like the Macy show, though the small ones dance competition has some distraction. Ashlee Simpson, can you say cheap publicity for a wanna be? This post does have some smack, but come on, this is not the best DWTS they have put together. I still favor Jason, though it seems like his long legs get in the way of his great smile and absolutely terrific studly self. Opps, now I am over the top, sorry.

I agree that it was time for Marlee to go. She did a good job for a while but the last two weeks she just seemed stiff and awkward. I did like her though and I felt bad that she had to leave. I like the mini dancers but sometimes it is weird to see people so young doing sexy moves. I thought the first couple last night was much better than the second and was glad they advanced. I thought Ashlee Simpson was just awful. I really don't understand her appeal. I also don't think Pete Wentz is at all out of her league- they both make crappy pop that is marketed as rock. They're a perfect, PR-grubbing couple. I love Kristi and Mark and was so glad they didn't get sent home! I knew it was unlikely but I was still a little nervous. Can anyone tell me what exactly Shannon and Derek said? I somehow missed their confessional, but they did seem to be acting like poor sports. I'm hoping to see Kristi, Jason and Shannon (or Mario) in the final three.
