Episode Recap: Ay Ca-rumba!

Holy smokes, it's Latin Night! With the exception of the quickstep, I will take a Latin dance over a ballroom dance any day. There's something so mundane about the fox trot that makes me slip into a boredom-induced coma. Luckily, we get a whole night of booty-shaking goodness. Who will the samba and rumba take as a victim this week? Let's dab on some Eau de D-List and find out! Yes, I have a million of these stupid D-List intros and they are all corny and ridiculous. If you are rolling your eyes right now, my work is done!

Mario — I enjoy his dancing so much it makes me crazy that more people aren't on the Mario bandwagon. He's very smooth and exudes sexuality. I hope he gains some fans so he can stay in the competition. Also, Karina is not my favorite pro but she looked amazing in that yellow outfit.
Samba 27

Cilla — Finally they left that woman's hair alone. She looked decent for the first time this competition. I'm extremely jealous that she can still do a split! I'm easily half her age and that's already impossible for me. This dance seemed to suit her a little more but the judges didn't like it, which made me wonder if I missed something.
Rumba 21

Tom delivered some great news after Cilla danced, Def Leppard is going to be performing this season. Holy crap I love them so much it is borderline embarrassing. Speaking of embarrassing, Ashlee Simpson will also be lip-synching in the ballroom this season. I knew something was up when she announced her engagement to Pete Wentz. No way they are getting engaged if she wasn't pregnant, right? Or am I just too cynical? Has her sister's pathetic personal life taught her nothing about marrying early? Oy vey.

Marissa — I'm still hoping she goes home this week despite an energetic and entertaining dance. I don't know when my mood shifted toward her, but I just can't stand the sight of her. But this was her best routine and I admit my aversion to her isn't really about her dancing. If she's around next week she deserves it because of her performance tonight.
Samba 24

Cristián — This was a good dance but I don't think it's fair to give a male contestant the rumba because it's a seduction dance centered around the woman. Cheryl seemed to do most of the dancing tonight. However, he gets points for blood-boiling sex appeal!
Rumba 23

Marlee — She struggled a bit with this and had some noticeable slip-ups. It's hard to knock her though because she still manages to entertain despite the frustration her disability creates. Sadly, we'll never know if she'd do better if she could hear. Then we'd really be able to measure the difficulty of what she does week to week.
Samba 22

Kristi — Like I said last week, I've run out of compliments for her. She's so stunning and I loved the dance and the song they danced to was perfect. How freakin' cute were her daughters? Some people say she's a ringer but I don't feel that way at all. Skating and ballroom aren't that much alike. Sure, the grace she learned in skating helps, but it's not dancing! I think people are jealous of her. I'll end this paragraph because I'm butt-kissing and making myself sick.
Rumba 29

Shannon — Neck spasms, food poisoning…what's next? Castration? Derek better ditch that black cloud over him before he finds out. I thought for sure we'd see footage of his neck snapping. Durrr! He bounced back pretty well, but Shannon looked a bit awkward. She had the same problem with the jive a couple weeks ago. And she again looked like she was going to collapse afterward! She needs to work on her polish and stamina.
Samba 23

Jason — Still mad that he stole a 29 last week! But I love my Edyta, so I'll let it go. She has the coolest leg warmers. The only leg warmers I ever had were pink "Get in Shape Girl" ones circa 1985. Ladies of the 80s, do you remember that? Anywho, Jason did a decent job this week and seemed to lose a bit of his stiffness (hehe).
Rumba 27

So that's it for this week. With the exception of a few stand-outs, I'd say it's going to come down to fan votes. Who are you voting for this week? Who will be under that creepy red light and one step away from a final dance? Let's chat below! Send me your power rankings, predictions and your pick for the encore dance tomorrow night. Dare I say Marissa might get it? Stop back tomorrow when we dissect the next results show!

Ya know, I'm done with this blog. I'll find someone who will stick with critiquing the dances rather than the . . . ah . . . cute factor.

FINAL ORDER OF FINISH (subject to change):

1 - Kristi
2 - Mario
3 - Cristián
4 - Jason
5 - Priscilla
6 - Shannon

_______________________________________
WEEK 5: unchanged from weeks 1-4

Last week, it seemed that CA and Len deducted one point for Priscilla's minor lift. So, Priscilla was almost axed. That seemed to have shattered Priscilla's confidence, as she was way off this week. Once again, Priscilla will have to sweat it out and hope that she has more fans than Marlee, Shannon or Cristián this week. (I agree that Cheryl did all the work. Adam could have done what Cristián did.)

It's amazing how a few harsh words from CA has given Marissa a whole new life. Last week, Len rated Marissa higher than Mario. This week, the combined scores of the judges had Marissa rated as the second best female. It now seems that Marissa has a good chance to finish in the top 6.

Mario and Jason did really well this week.

I'm totally with you on Karina not being one of my favorite dancers. If she would get that "devil" look off her face and quit glaring at all times with that "sourpuss" look, she might get more compliments coming her way. She's not even close to being even ONE of my favorites. All of them would be before her!!

wrt Priscilla - why was her music so slow? Much slower than the others doing that dance.

I've said it before - the judges are so uneven in their scoring it's pathetic. They should not have any say - like the judges don't in American Idol.

i want marissa off my tv screen so badly! honestly was she dancing because i didn't notice that at all ... she was shaking a lot but dancing? no.

and sorry as much as i tend to like jason - he wasn't doing anything but standing there like a big giant pole for his partner to dance around.

priscilla and marlee had a not so great week but at least they were attempting some actual dance steps!

mario was great and again he is someone who actually dances.

kristi well come on what can anyone say anymore? she was terrific again.

and christian ... i think he's pretty good overall - this week probably not as strong as last but i liked him. that telenova spoof they did was pretty cute.

shannon was okay too - i didn't think she was as bad as the judges.

i think priscilla is likely going to get the boot tonight which is too bad ... because despite last night i think she's better than marissa.

Geez. Did Marissa run over someone's dog or something? I've seen less venom aimed at child molesters. She did an entertaining samba AND she did required moves. Hers was one of the few dances that didn't bore me. Kristi and Mark are technically proficient, but it's so clinical. I don't enjoy them. I did enjoy Mario and Karina. Jason and Edyta overscored yet again. I would rather see Cristian overscored as I find him much more attractive and much more personable although I prefer Edyta over Cheryl.

Okay, maybe I'm reaching here, but does anyone think Edyta is hiding a baby bump? She's been covered up for the last couple of weeks (come on, Edyta not showing her abs on Latin week???), and I thought maybe there was a little something there. Or could my insane jealousy over her perfect body make me see lumps that don't exist?

Really! What IS with all the Marissa hate? She doesn't have to be your favorite, but she is a pleasant happy person who is trying hard and doing well. What did she do that was so horrible?

I'm with the fans who are defending Marissa. I think she is continuing to improve and I love her upbeat personality! My husband was looking her up on the net and learned that just a few years ago she beat cervical cancer. That lady is definitely a fighter here and I have complete respect for her love of life!

I'm with the judges in thinking that Kristy had a breakthrough this week. I've been watching her skate for years and she's never been considered "sexy" on the ice. Beautiful, athletic, and graceful, yes. But never overtly sexy or sensual. Tonight I thought she let go and let herself be "hot." I LOVED the way she worked her hair when Mark let it down. Gorgeous. And the dance was SO GOOD. I was upset that it didn't get a 30.

I thought Mario and Karina were really good. He tamed down his "wildness" as Len calls it, and did a very classy, controlled samba. And I gotta defend Karina. For those who think she is too serious, I gotta say I saw the DWTS tour this year in Vegas and she had a "wardrobe malfunction" during a group dance when her collar (which held her top up!) came unhooked. You could see the shock on her face as she caught the top, but she didn't get angry. She started laughing, and Kym Johnson assisted her very quickly to secure it (they happened to be in a sitting position) and they both went right on with the dance without missing a beat! She was a complete pro and very lighthearted about what could have been a very embarrassing situation! :)

As for who's going home, I think it will be Pricilla just because I don't think she did very well tonight. Marlee was off too, but there was a lot more choreography/difficulty to Marlee's dance.

BTW, I'm really taking a liking to Fabian this season. It's his first time on the show and he's stepped up to the challenge and turned Marlee into a ballroom dancer even though she can't hear the music. He has a terrific personality and a great work ethic. I hope he gets invited back in the future!

I don't think Jason is as good as the judges think he is, but he's certainly nowhere near bad. I think he's better than Christian, who needs to improve more than a bit to catch Jason.

Shannon may have had an off night, but she is definitely a game student. She tries so hard, and she hasn't exactly had a stable partner (poor Derek!) this season. Anyone taking bets on whether she actually comes out dancing with fabulous, perpetual back-up Jonathon next week? It wouldn't surprise me!

The only dance I enjoyed last night was Marissa's. She brought the spirit of the dance to her performance. It might not have been great, but it was the only dance that wasn't downright boring.

I also enjoyed Marlee's dance and I didn't notice the slip ups. I don't if it was the energy that made me miss any screw ups, but she also captured the spirit of the dance.

Someone else mentioned this, and I have to agree, Pricilla's music was way, way too slow for the dance and I think it hurt her.

While I could watch Edyta all day long, she needs to teach her partners to dance and stop dancing around them. It's only going to hurt their team in the end. I could understand it the past few seasons when she had partners that couldn't dance, but she has a partner that can dance this year so she needs to spend more time choreographing a team dance and less time trying to show off her incredible body.

As usual, I really don't have much to add to what'already been posted. All I know is that I was having very impure thoughts about Derek from the beginning of that samba. Oi....

Latin night is usually my favorite, but it seemed to be a low-energy night for everyone. And it just goes to show you why I'm not a judge - I didn't realize Marlee had made so many mistakes. However, I've seen people make worse ones and get higher scores. I agree - their scoring is all over the place.

I think Edyta is one of the weaker choreographers among the pros, and that hurts Jason. Also, his hands and arms seem weak. He does this move where he kind of flits around the stage like a butterfly - not very masculine to say the least. Also he still seems so ambivalent about being on the show at all. I prefer Marissa's burning desire to get better scores out of the judges, though sometimes she is a little scary.

Speaking-of, I have to agree (though not so venomously) with the posters who are ready for Marissa to take her leave. In Week 1 I thought she was adorable, and that is about the last time she looked like she was having fun.

Kristi - let's just crown her right now. I laughed when her husband complimented Mark on pulling some qualities out of his wife that he had never seen before. And the girls - too cute.

Mario is back! What a smooth, sultry samba.

Priscilla - I think this is her week to go. I did not find it as bad as the judges did, but as Len pointed out, when the music is so slow, every move is magnified, and obviously far from perfect.

Shannon - not her best week, but really, what is with the black cloud hanging over Derek? Amazing he could dance at all.

Cristian - I thought the costumes were odd and made them both look a little chunky. Loved the telenovela though.

Marlee - I think the fans are still in her corner and will let her slide for another week. The samba was an incredible challenge for anyone, let alone a deaf person, and she gave it her all.

I expect Marissa and Priscilla to be in the bottom two. Either one could be gone.

I'm kind of sad that I didn't see any really good samba rolls, but overall I thought everyone did pretty well. Tony finally gave Marisa some harder choreography, and she did a good job. My future hubby Cristian was smokin' hot, and he's kind of got the male dancer butt going. And if I had a body like my girl Edyta, I'd be showing it off all the time, wearing leg warmers and little booty shorts...lol. She does need to give Jason some harder steps, though. Not that I watch him so much when I can watch her. ;)

I'm so glad to see people standing up for Marissa. A person has the right to be cheerful, for God's sake! She's just that kind of personality. The week she was severely criticized I frankly agreed that her dance was dull, but she 's been doing better and I'm really glad.

The person who kind of irritates me is Priscilla because she seems so serious and kind of glum or something most of the time. As far as I'm concerned, she could do with a little of what Marissa has.
