Top 10 Dances of the First Five Seasons

So special they deserved their own post! Here are the judges' picks for the most amazing dances of the series:

Top 10 Dances of the DWTS series

10. Kelly Monaco's freestyle from week 6 of season 1

9. Sabrina Bryan's paso doble from week 4 of season 5 (right before she got axed)

8. Emmitt Smith's cha-cha from week 9 of season 3

7. Apolo Anton Ohno's quickstep from week 9 of season 4

6. Joey Fatone's jive from week 7 of season 4

5. Helio Castroneves' quickstep from week 8 of season 5 (should have been #1)

4. Drew Lachey's freestyle from week 8 of season 2

3. Stacy Keibler's samba from week 8 of season 2

2. Mel B's paso doble from week 7 of season 5

1. Mario Lopez's tango from week 9 of season 3

Recap: Can you say scripted? I'm going to cut the judges some slack since they don't usually read off cue cards, but it could have been a little less obvious. Putting Helio's quickstep at #5 was a grave disservice to the show and just plain ridiculous. Nothing can match it and I doubt anything ever will. I may have let it slide if it was at least in the top 3 over Stacy's samba. However, I must admit the top two were awesome dances as well and deserved their recognition. I could have done without Kelly's freestyle. I think this was just a nod to the first winner, but I noticed quite a few mistakes in it. It would not have gotten a perfect score today. This show has come a long way!

What do you think of this list? Did Len, Bruno and Carrie Ann get it right? Did they even pick these? Tell me your favorite dances and moments from the first 5 seasons below.

Not the order I would have chosen but I enjoyed the dances. I doubt seriously that the judges really picked.

Agreed! No way Len picks Kelly's dance. I forgot to mention that everyone looked so different in the first season. Len had less grey and Carrie Ann looked...odd.

I thought it was interesting that all the dances were from either the winners or runners-up, besides Sabrina. She sure did put on a good show and I'm sad that she wasn't able to get farther into the competition. Here's hoping Mark can make it all the way this time with Kristi!

I thought that maybe Laila Ali would have made the list. I love the Drew/Cheryl freestyle, but I think that I like their paso even better. And I love Apolo/Julianne's quickstep, but their paso was better, too.

I missed the first dance, but figured that they had to include a token entry from season 1. Funny, I remember very little from that season, other than Kelly's "wardrobe malfunction", and that Joey and Ashly did a jive to Elton John; I loved the dance, hated the music in context.

I've watched the show for almost the full run to date, and I gotta say, the most outstanding dance I've ever see performed is Mel & Maksim's waltz to Queen's "Somebody to Love." It's the one where they were dressed all in white and Mel did the four splits across the floor. That dance was simply AMAZING. They moved with such speed and elegance, it felt as if they were one instead of two people. I'll never forget that performance.

They left out Emmitt's "Can't touch this" dance (I forget what it was, just remember the music) , Apollo's and Julianne's samba (the one where she was in the tiger costume)and Mario and Katrina's paso..Too bad they did not have a top 20 dances. I forgot how bad Kelly's freestyle was. At times she was waiting for Alec and looking at him to see what he was going to do next. I still can't believe that she won....

Even though Kelly's dance was far from perfect... she still was easily the best of that season.

Personally, I think Apolo and Jullianne have easily been my favorite winners. My wife forgot how height-challenged he was, but both of them appear to be having such a great time and doing such a good job that it puts a smile on our face.

As a Florida Gator and Cowboy fan, Emmitt Smith has a special place in our hearts. While Emmitt was easily the most improved (maybe in the show's history), Mario is obviously a huge dancing talent. However, doesn't the chorus line usually kick higher? Or is this a normal limitation with so many men in the mix?

I also really enjoy watching Cheryl and any of her partners.

Could we quibble a bit...sure! But the three judges did a great job and their top 10 were all wonderful to watch again. (Of course I would have moved Emmett Smith to the top, but...)
Cheryl also works for me with any and all of her partners.

Here's my sentimental favorite that didn't make the list: John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgensen's quickstep from Season 1 (Let's Face the Music and Dance, I think.) Was good for its time and the first really good dance of Dancing with the Stars.

Have to add, though, that Mel and Maks's Paso Doble to Free Your Mind is my all-time favorite dance on Dancing with the Stars!

Kelly Monaco's freestyle? Pleeeze. Doesnt rate the top 20. Agree with most of the others "not necessarily in that order". Was ready to go ballistic when Mel & Mak's paso was second, but have to agree Mario and Karina's tango was awesome. Where was John O'Hurley's waltz? That was one of my favorites.
