November 27, 2006: Save Richie, Save the World

Aww, poor Richie. Wait, I started last week like that, too. Seems like I could do that every week now. I think that even though technically Jason Ritter would get top billing in the show, Jesse Tyler Ferguson has hilariously become the one to watch. I'm drawn to the character because he's not perfect. There's a little bit of Richie in all of us — except for the running-people-over and smashing-into-stores thing. He's found the love of his life, and everything he's doing is making it more complicated to be with her. But we've had two interventions now. First, Lina basically saved him from overdosing on pills and now she's saved him from — well, sitting in a convenience store. I'm hoping that every four episodes or so, Lina isn't going to have to save him from something else, but maybe that's the route the producers should take.

Some of the funniest moments:

— Holly broadcasts that Richie is in the car and has "erratic behavior," and the shot goes back to him frantically swatting at the bee.
— Ritchie's middle name is "Britney."
— After Duncan offers Richie a place in the house with him and his mother, he warns that Richie might have to "zip her up" and that he should just "look away and power through."
— Duncan's mother tells Ethan that Duncan's cell-phone number is "speed dial 2."

Some observations:

— I love the show. I really do. But why does my comedy always have to end with drama?
— Ethan and Kyle? When did this happen? I don't remember an Ethan-and-Kyle-bonding story line. I'm sure it happened sometime during that party at the Ellenbogens' house, but starting the show off with Ethan going to Kyle's place seemed a little out of sorts to me.
— Other than the simple premise of the show that everyone went to third grade with each other, the producers are finally tying everyone together. In the whole cell-phone whisper-down-the-lane thing, Ethan called Duncan and told him he knew Lina and Richie. Ethan told Kat who Holly was (the girl who killed a rabbit with her shoe), and everyone but Aaron and Perry showed up at Richie's accident scene. There have been a lot of complaints about the quad story lines — maybe this is the start of making it one/two cohesive stories.
— Finally, it only took one episode for Lena and Richie to get back together? Does David Crane think The Class isn't going to make it and therefore didn't want to stretch it out? I was looking forward to a billion attempts at getting her back.

Until next week, friends.

I really thought this show hit its stride tonight. I laughed out loud many many times, loved how they all ended up at the store. The Class has very appealing characters, even with the secondary ones like David Keith. Watch this show again, and see just how funny it really is.

Why are people not watching this show again?

Great episode, though I have to wonder where they are going to go from here.

Nice to see everybodys worlds collide, even if they don't stay that way.

The whole cast was on their game. I loved how they incorporated Duncan's mom too.

I actually liked that they didn't draw out Richie and Lena getting back together. I don't think I could handle another Ross and Rachel situation without throwing up.

Wow. A perfect storm of character convergence. Amazing writing by David Crane and brilliant direction by James Burrows. I hope CBS realizes what it has here.

Again this is the only comedy on tv that is actually making me laugh (well at least till scrubs returns). The characters are great. The situations are hilarious. The whole thing just works for me. God I love this show and hope i sticks around. Come on CBS, I never watch anything on your network but i tune in every week for this show.

If nothing else I hope someone involved in The Class gets ahold of this blog and reads the comments. It's one of the very few blogs I've worked on where almost every comment is positive. It's such a good show.

This line scared me...is this show on the chopping block?

Ethan and Kyle? When did this happen? I don't remember an Ethan-and-Kyle-bonding story line.

David, I think that Ethan and Kyle bonded a little at Oprah's (that still cracks me up) birthday party in a previous episode. Maybe they had a mutual amusement with the whole Ellenbogen family and decided to get together for raquetball.

I loved this episode too and agree with the previous poster about the Lena/Richie split being brief. There are enough shows on TV with long, drawn out story lines. Lets keep our half-hour comedies on a good pace.

Though, an episode without Aaron and Perry is like a day without sunshine. Hopefully they'll be back next week. :-x

First off, I'm THRILLED that you guys finally have a "Class" discussion thread. I love this show. Monday is becoming my favorite TV night.

Last I heard, The Class was picked up for the rest of the season. So that should assuage some worries.

Perhaps the show creators/writers realized that the Richie/Lena split was so incredibly HEAVY (which it was--dang) that they wanted to resolve it quickly to keep the tone of the show light. Plus, some of my favorite moments from the show are the interactions between those two crazy kids.

More people need to watch this show. It is so endearing and the actors seem they are genuinely having a great time.
I had never really watched CBS and finally decided to check out How I Met Your Mother this year and found the Class in the process.
I really like Mother, but I really look forward to Class. It actually makes me laugh out loud and I like every single one of the characters and I admit, I’m not easy to please.
I really hope that they rerun it like crazy this summer to get people hooked a la season 1 of Friends.
I think it has tremendous potential to be a hit.

This show conflicts with my exercise class, so I always miss it. It says something though that it is always one of the first things on my DVR that I watch because it is so fun. I wasn't sure this concept would work, but the characters, especially Ritchie and Kat, are very entertaining. There aren't many good comedies on t.v. right now, so I really hope this show continues to improve and keeps entertaining us.

This was definitely the best episode yet. I was laughing the whole time.

I loved Richie in the car swatting the bee and his conversation with the cop about not getting out of the car.

My favorite part was the phone conversations. That was awesome. I was laughing the whole time.

And then everyone going to the accident scene. and then getting in the car. And bringing back the bunny killing incident.

oh, and holly being allergic to the bees at the end and running off camera. I thought her 'reporting' from the backseat of the car and using her cell phone was hilarious.

awesome episode. I love this show.

If you feel like giving a chance to a totally different kind of underdog show, give Veronica Mars (Tues.@9 on CW) a try. The Class is my giddy lighthearted pick of the week while VM is my fav show, period. If your hooked on Lost but are pissed at the lack of payoff when it comes to great mysteries, this is the show for you.
All great shows need support, so please keep it in mind.

Anyone else notice that the news anchor is the "new black guy" on The Office? AKA the Washington Mutual guy, Fruit of the Loom grapes. Just wanted to put that out there.

Glad they didn't drag it out. They still have to deal with Fern and the divorce so that shoudl be plenty of pain to keep Ritchie interesting.

I also loved Ethan putting his arm on Kat's shoulder and her "what the hell" look.

I thought Ethan and Kyle was great. Thier personalities work well together and the fact that they both wanted to go down there, but tried to hide thier enthusiasm(for about 3 seconds) was great.
