November 13, 2006: Who's Lina Warbler?
For our first jaunt into the blogging world of The Class, let's play a little game. It's called, "Where they were, where they are now, and what I think" or WTWWTANAWIT for short. Sorry, it's a work in progress. Seriously though, since we're jumping in the middle, we'll do a quick recap. And then I'll tell you where I'm at, so you can get a feel where I'm coming from.
Where they were: Ethan Hass (Jason Ritter)and Kat Warbler (Lizzy Caplan) have become good buddies. They hang together a lot, and you just know sooner or later they are going to kiss. But right now, she likes pushing him to his limit.
Where they are now: Kat apparently likes pictures of body parts that are unattached, or simply gross. She shows Richie a picture of a buttock which he rightfully points out "you rarely see them out alone." Ethan finally told his date that he wasn't Dan Slutsky. And he still thought he'd get to keep her! Ha.
What I think: Ethan is growing on me. I didn't liked the character at the start, but since the ice cream tasting, he's getting more and more tolerable every week. There's something about Kat, though. She's a bad-ass, but seems like she might have this delicate side, too. Okay, except for the picture of the severed tongue. She's hot, in a kick- your-ass kind of way.
Where they were: Richie Velch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Lina Warbler (Heather Goldenhersh)... and Fern Velch (Sara Gilbert) have formed quite a little triangle here, don't you think? Richie runs Lina over, forcing her to be perched in a wheelchair for the entire series so far. But she still wants to date him. Lina thinks he's the greatest. Richie thinks she's awesome. Richie hates his wife, whom Lina doesn't know about.
Where they are now: Lina accidentally says "Love you" at the end of a conversation she has with Richie. She calls him back, and Richie says it back. So Richie decides it's time to leave his wife. He goes home to tell Fern it's over, and she's not there. Turns out she opened his mail and must have gotten Lina's address from the insurance form. And she's now presenting Lina a get-well plant as "Richie's wife."
What I think: Uh-oh. I love this story line. Lina is just so cute and, frankly, who doesn't enjoy the lovesick puppy that Richie is around her? Lina is the sweetest little dork, and she and the biggest lying dork make a great couple. Now she knows, though, and she said earlier that lying wasn't acceptable. Then again, she did get run over by the guy and forgave him for that. Richie, if you hurt our Lina, so help me....
Where they were: Duncan Carmello (Jon Bernthal) is working at the house of his high school sweetheart, Nicole Allen (Andrea Anders). He's in love with her, so he'll do anything to stay around her. But she's married to famous football player Yonk Allen (David Keith). They've had some intimate moments despite this fact.
Where they are now: While talking about Richie's whole having-a-wife thing, I think Nicole actually said that she loves Duncan. Duncan is still trying to persuade her to leave Yonk and be with him, and who can blame him.
What I think: Despite the fact that he lives with his mom and plays in a band that thinks they rock out by starting their set with a ballad, Duncan's kind of cool. Nicole, um — she's just smokin' hot. Who wouldn't want her? Yonk is going to crush Duncan if he ever finds out that he wants Nicole.
Where they were: Kyle Lendo (Sean Maguire) and his boyfriend get along swimmingly with Perry (Sam Harris) but not with his dim-witted wife Holly (Lucy Punch). She seems to be the only one under the impression that Perry isn't gay, despite the fact that he drools over Kyle's boyfriend. Holly and Perry named their daughter Oprah.
Where they are now: Holly and Perry threw a birthday party for little Oprah, but Perry conveniently forgot to confirm "The Puppet People." So he busts out his sock and a show tune disguised as a birthday song and does a puppet show himself.
What I think: I can still picture the scene from a few weeks ago in which Holly got pummeled by a flying stop sign. Loved it! I listened to Sam Harris' debut album from the mid-'80s the other day. That's right, I own a Sam Harris record.
All right, there it is. Eight episodes wrapped up in one blog. Next week we'll just talk about one. So feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of the show and the characters.
Until next week, friends.

I love Kyle. He's delightful. Plus, for some reason, I think his glasses really bring it together for him. Ya hardly ever see glasses on TV, but he's hot enough that the glasses don't pull him into 'They're-trying-to-tell-you-he-is-a-nerd' territory plus it just brings his face some seriousness. "They were overhyped anyways.""No-""Yeah, they always brought it." to Ethan: "This may not be the best time to tell you, but the puppet people aren't coming." "Man, that sock can sing." I love his mixture of boyish glee (Like at the stopsign thing-That was funny. Great physical humor, and how he reacted to it.) and adultishness. His plausibility I like.
I'm enjoying this show more than I ought to. I don't actually care for any of the storylines or people but I'm enjoying it and it's funnier than it seems. I like Kyle and I like Ethan and Kat, and Richie and Lena are cute together in a freakish way, but I don't enjoy their storyline. And I don't enjoy the duncan/nicole storyline, or either of those characters.

Any doubts as to Perry's orientation were put to rest with the showtune in which it was revealed that Oprah's middle name is "Liza."

I love this show! It is mean and funny and the guy who plays Richie is so good! I watched it only because my favorite DJ in Chicago has a son who works on the show and I'm glad I did. The Class and Studio 60 make my Monday nights complete. I laugh at loud. Will it last the season?

Well, it's about damn time. I've been missing a Class blog intensely since the show started, and I'm still mystified at no "Two and a Half Men" blog, considering how prominent it is. But anyway...
There's one thing about this show that I'm finding slightly annoying. The unsubtle habit of ending the show on a "shocking" revelation or cliffhanger is getting real old, real fast. Once in a while, maybe, but every week? Irritating. At least (and at last) they finally converged some of the disparate classmate groups last night, with Ethan running into the Holly/Perry bunch.
That being said, I do enjoy the series. I don't know how long it will last, but sitting snugly between HIMYM and 2.5Men, things could be worse. It's light-years ahead of Twenty Good Years, in any event.
Oh, and hi, David.

It's about time. I love this show. I don't know why, but I do. I mainly only watch it for Kyle and Kat, who are my favorite characters, but it keeps me entertained.

Is there a chance that Sam Harris was on Star Search of some other talent show? He looks so familiar.
I love this show and the Monday night lineup is hilarious. 2 1/2 Men needs to clean up stuff a little.

How cute is this show?!! Kat is my favorite character. I loved her line in the first episode "BEST party ever!" and the look on her face. I could replay that scene forever and laugh every time. I hope this show gets picked up.

hi david!!!
So, a blog The Class, huh? awesome! But, I didn't get to watch last night!
I love your recap of the entire show so far. It's great.
I love this show. I laugh out loud every single week. Usually at something Richie says.
The only thing I don't really like is all the separate story lines. It's a fairly large cast and they're never all together except for that 1st episode. Maybe that'll change as the series goes on.

I am completely impressed, David, with the "Season Thus Far" re-cap! A plus work.
This comment will surely reveal that I'm ancient, but does anyone else remember when MTV first aired & actually played music videos? One of the original VJs was a woman by the name of Nina Blackwood & Kat is a dead ringer for her. Every time Lizzy Caplan is on screen, I can't get it out of my head!

Thanks for the season at a glance David! I'm enjoying this show much more than I ever thought I would.
My favorite part last night was when Kat kept telling people that watching Ethan self-destruct in his relationship was her new favorite TV show.

Yeay! Finally, a blog on The Class! Thanks David. And a very good update of the season so far.
I'm not sure why, but this show is really growing on me. I think it's the comic timing, which is incredible, especially in the hurricane episode (my favorite of the season so far). Not only did I laugh uproariously when Holly got bonked on the head with a flying stop sign (Debris!), but I actually fell off the bed when Lina went flying off into the wind in her wheelchair. It's so wrong to laugh. So very wrong. And yet I have tears streaming down my face just thinking about it right now.
So, it's surprisingly funny, but you're laughing at situations that really aren't all that funny when you think about it. Which gives the show a little more depth than I had originally given it credit for. Not to mention, there aren't a lot of shows on TV that showcase an entire cast of characters who have a freakish/pathetic side to their personalities. One or two characters maybe, but each character on this show has already shown us their vulnerabilities--in fewer than 10 episodes.
So, I guess I do know why I am falling in love with this show. It's a great companion to How I Met Your Mother, although I always switch when Two and a Half Men comes on. But The Class would also be a good companion to The New Adventures of Old Christine. Just get Two and a Half Men out of the way!
And until then, I'll just wonder if Jason Ritter is thinking that he'll never get offered a show that doesn't have a wheelchair in it.

BEST show ever! It's my new favorite show!
I like Richie and Lina the best, but Ethan and Kat are growing on me. The rest of the characters are wonderful as well. I would love to see them all interact more. I don't want it to turn into Friends, though, where they all have to be together to do anything.
