March 5, 2007: The End of a Semester
It's really a shame that this was the final episode of the season for The Class. I really think it has hit its stride now. It seems like the writers have finally found the pairings that work and have been able to mix a slight bit of drama into the comedy (and do it well). I've been consistently entertained throughout the last month or two. Personally, I'm disappointed it's going to leave the lineup. Some good laughs before the 24 bloodbath have been good for my Monday nights.
We all talk a lot in this blog about the missing people from the show. Holly and Fern didn't show up again. Aaron finally came back, though that certainly could have been a hair double that Kyle was hugging at the end. The one person that never gets mentioned, however, is Penny! I completely forgot about Yonk's daughter. I probably said this the first time she showed up, too, but what did Yonk previously marry to produce that? I'm glad she's not full time as she's a one-joke, evil eating machine, but once every few months brings a few laughs.
Interesting twist with Kat now. First of all, she has a heck of an arm. She was really firing those grapes at Ethan. I loved his comment after the third one hit him in the neck, "seedless, not painless." Now, it was obvious she was going to hook up with Duncan when he invited her to hang out and wait for the gang, but it still adds a new dynamic to this. Will this simply be one drunken night or more?
I was also surprised to hear that Duncan bought a house. He was/is really serious about moving forward with Nicole. Funny, too, how the money for the house probably came from the repair job. So indirectly, Yonk is paying for the house that Duncan wants to live in with Nicole — if he sticks with it, of course. I guess I understand where Duncan is coming from with Nicole. He finally heard that the love of his life wants to be with him, and then she sort of retracted the statement. That has to kill him more now than before he knew she loved him back. But jeez, the guy just had a heart attack; give the girl some time to process the whole situation.
Lina and Richie were really cute in this episode, but six months! That's it? They are engaged after six months? There's no way Richie's divorce could even be final yet. But, I can picture them married, as I think they make a good couple. However, I can't picture Richie getting busy in a closet.
So, with that, it's over for freshman year. As a fan, I'm hoping we make it all the way through a second season as well, but I just get the feeling we won't. (Just my opinion, nothing official on that front).
Until next season, friends.

Since I'm usually one of the first to chime in, might as well finish the season that way too.
I loved this whole episode. I admit I was spoiled, but it still didn't ruin a thing.
From the grape fight to Penny with the vending machine to Duncan/Kat crying over "The Lake House" and the whole Richie/Lina miscommunication, it was great.
Though the Aaron stand-in was a bit distracting, but all in all a good way to end the season. Though I know it's doubtful the show will be back, I'm keeping my fingers crossed CBS will see the error of its ways and bring us a second season.

Yeah, this seemed like an ending to me, for some reason. Hope not. I really like this show.
Have enjoyed your blog on this show, David, but I won't be following you to the Pussycat Dolls. That doesn't sound interesting to me at all. Sorry. But you have fun....

USA today and others also predicted this to be the series ender, not just the season finale. Hopefully not, but if so, bummer.
My only beef last night is with CBS. Why, during the commercial break for the show itself, did they have to show a spoiler for the last two minutes?? "So you think you know who is going to end up together...You may be surprised...", then they cut to the scene with Kat and Duncan sitting on the couch. There was only ten minutes left in the show. I'm already watching. You don't have to "tease" me into watching the remaining 10 minutes.
I'm sure most of the viewers would have guessed it the minute she showed up at his door b/c they were both hurting. I just do not understand spoiling the end during the show itself.
I'm also not sure why Richie and Lina hung around at the hospital so long. I understand going there to lend support. I guess Lina may have been Nicole's ride.
It was good to see Perry, even briefly.
As for Pussycat Dolls; sorry, can't do it Dave (loved the "did you lose a bet" comment .) Its preempting my other show that is sadly most likely ending this season. I'm sure it will be stimulating entertainment.

A great episode to finish out the season. I too saw the Duncan/Kat thing coming the second she showed up at the door but it was still a great twist. Loved that they included Penny and Perry into the mix last night. Penny is hilarious but I agree would get tiring if it was every week. Best in small doses. Her and that vending machine was priceless. Loved the Lina/Richie stuff too. Anyone notice that Kat's hair is all frizzy when shes crazy and all slick when she's happy? I thought that was interesting and something that was carried out throughout the season. I have loved this show since episode 1. I feel its really has hit its stride and I do hope that it comes back next year. I'm not sure why they can't just air the episodes of this and another show in the same slot for half a year with no repeats. It deserves to be saved. I think if it reran during the summer its a show whose audience could build and benefit from less competition. Congratulations to the cast and crew for a job well done. You made me care about these character and more importantly i could count on you every week for a laugh, and a unique one at that. (unlike christine, where its the same plot every week, yuk)fingers crossed for one more year!

I just love this show and have faith that it will not be cancelled. See you all next "semester".

I am sad to see it go, and hope it comes back.
But I gotta say, I wasn't a fan of the Duncan/Kat hookup. I really hope it's a one-time thing and not the beginning of a relationship (you know, when season 2 starts up!).
Either way, it was a good season. I'm glad I gave it a chance.

What a difference between the first episode and last night's episode ! The show is really coming along. I just don't know if CBS will give it a chance.
I also saw that teaser with Duncan and Kat and thought, oh great, thanks ! So, it did spoil it, but I wasn't that surprised. I liked how Duncan went to kiss her and Kat backed off, but then she started it. I also thought it was appropriate that Duncan said that it meant nothing and Kat, being Kat, said it better not !!
I thought Ritchie proposing was a bit much, but if the show's renewed, I'm sure he'll realize that he needs to be divorced first ! But the scene where you hear his thoughts was really funny and his body language matched perfectly.
I thought Nicole's reaction was appropriate. Just because a relationship is over, it doesn't mean you want harm to come to that person. If she finds out about the house that Duncan bought, she's gonna feel so bad.
If it goes another season, maybe we'll see more of Ethan at his office. I still don't believe him as a doctor, but if they want to draw out him and Kat getting together, they're gonna need something for Ethan to do.
That was so a double as Kyle's boyfriend, guess the actor wasn't available....
Well, if the show's renewed and in the same day/time slot, I'd watch it !

I didn't like the Duncan/Kat hookup either... they haven't even been on screen together that I can recall. It seemed so out-of-the-blue that she came over, just to create a "scandalous" hookup. It made me disappointed in the Kat character who is one of my faves.
Also, one thing's been bugging me about this episode... maybe other Philly-area people can chime in. Duncan bought a house in Chester? These people are definitely living in the burbs, Main Line probably, maybe Gladwyne or someplace like that. There's no way anyone moves from Main Line to Chester. Unless he meant Chester County... but he would've said county then. Probably just another in this shows somewhat ham-handed attempts to localize the show to Philly.

That was the season/series finale? Obviously I haven't been keeping up with my tv news. I love this show and hope it comes back next season.
The marriage thing was a little contrived to me. I am still waiting to see crazy ex-wife Sara Gilbert attack Holly Ellenbogen (remember that "cliffhanger"?). Or, maybe we haven't seen Holly Ellenbogen since mid-season because the Sara Gilbert character has done something bad. hmmm....

Last night's episode was good, although it was much more dramatic than funny. I had forgotten about Penny, too. It was really funny when the doctor thought Penny was Yonk's wife, then he thought Nicole was Yonk's daughter. I agree, it seems way too soon for Richie and Lina to be getting engaged, although it was a sweet way to end the season (and possibly the show).
jayhawk - I agree - PCD instead of Veronica Mars? What has the world come to?

It was a good episode, I thought Richie's proposal was really anticlimactic and of course we all saw the Kat/Duncan pairing coming a mile away. I have to say my favorite character is a toss-up between Nicole and Ethan. I love her outbursts and how she goes from sweet and meek to shouting and all crazy and Ethan's always been my fave. I hope this isn't the last we see of this show because it is good but if Christine brings in better numbers during that timeslot then it most likely will be. Why are people watching "Rules of Engagement"?
And sorry David, but like everyone else, I've hated the Pussycat Dolls show since I heard it would be replacing Veronica Mars while it was on hiatus and also because -- oh yeah-- it's the Pussycat Dolls' show. So I guess this is goodbye for now, David!

I think, as much as fans of the show hate to admit it, it is unlikely that it will be picked up for a second season. I hope that they let the actors know soon enough so that they can get in on the castings for the pilots for next season.

Casting doesn't quite work like that. Many actors do pilot season anyway if they are unsure whether the show they are involved in is coming back or not. It's just that contractually they are still obligated to their first show if it does get picked up.
In this case many of these actors are seasoned enough to know how the business works. Especially since most have been on prior cancelled series.
