January 8, 2007: The Three Amigos
Happy New Year to all the fans of The Class.
Are the critics finally getting to me? All I've heard since the start of the show was the word "uneven." Up until this episode, I thought the show was friggin' hilarious. But with this one, I too thought it was "uneven." There were many funny moments. In fact, more funny moments in this episode than According to Jim has had in its entire run. But there were also many jokes that just fell completely flat. To me, this was a case of: How many jokes can we cram into 22 minutes?
Maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Palmer. Jaime King isn't bad to look at, but her character is annoying. Honestly, I'm not that familiar with the career of King to know whether this is bad acting or a poorly developed character. But either way, I'm with Kat on this one — Palmer needs to bite the dust.
Or maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Fern. True, she brings comic relief to everyone around her, like Nicole and Duncan with their line: "Oh, a gun. You must be Fern." But holy mackerel, Fern's getting really, really mean with her comments. In this episode, it really knocked the wind out of my sails.
Or maybe my thoughts are changing because Holly Ellenbogen is ridiculous. Here's hoping that Fern knocks her off. I'd much rather see her husband — in fact, when was the last time we saw Perry? Or maybe... No, wait — that's enough maybes to last a while.
Let's take a quick run through the funny moments:
1. When Palmer hugs both Ethan and Kat and calls them "the three amigos" and Ethan so glibly says, "We could get jackets."
2. After seeing the wreath of flowers Ethan got for Palmer, Kat says to him, "Did she win the Kentucky Derby?"
3. Ethan cracking up while saying that the thought of Kat and Palmer together was devastating.
But then there was the whole Kyle "buffer" thing — you know, because gay men "like to get buffer." Funny for a minute, akward after the third or fourth minute. And how many times could they go to the well with the Monkey wine? Clearly, one of the writers thought that was funnier than it really was, since they used it at least three times during the episode.
Overall, I think I finally understand where the "uneven" comment is coming from. But one episode does not make a series, and if there was ever going to be a less-than-stellar episode, airing it opposite the BCS National Championship was the right place to put it.
Until next week, friends.

Honestly, I didn't think this episode was uneven at all. I thought it was one of the better ones. Sure, there were a few things that fell flat but there was also a whole lot of funny.
I agree that Palmer, Fern and Holly are annoying, but I'm pretty sure Holly is being phased out and Fern is apparently what is going to get us there. So I can put up with what little there is of Holly until she's gone (check out the CBS site and notice Holly is no longer in the cast picture. Lucy Punch's bio is also down).
But I don't know. Uneven isn't a word I would use to describe this one.
Maybe I'm in the minority that I liked this one?

This episode wasn't the best. The best part was revealed in the commercials. I never even got what that buffer joke was about, and now that I do, I don't see how they thought they could carry whole scenes with it. I much preferred the stuff wtih Fern, who I only really like because I like the actress.
As for Holly, I went to the CBS website and Lucy Punch has been removed from it completely. But Perry's still there. So they're going to off her and leave Perry? It seems a bit harsh. I never really had a problem with Holly. She's so neurotic and annoying, it made good tv. I really don't think she's the weak link of the show. I wouldn't mind Nicole and Duncan getting the heave-ho and they keep Holly. I also noticed that Kyle's hot boyfriend wasn't in this episode, and they always used to be a package deal. I guess he got the boot as well. I'll miss him for the eye candy alone. And where are those people of color they promised? This is supposed to be Philly people. I think they should fix that before anything else personally.

I finally got my husband to watch this show with me and it wasn't as funny as I hoped it to be.

This episode was far from its best, but there were still a few laughable lines. I didn't really laugh out loud at the moments you pointed out. There was something that Ethan said, but it has since escaped me. You were spot on with the jokes that fell flat though. Hopefully, the show will improve next week.

Monday's outing wasn't one of the series' better episodes, but this dialogue between Richie & Fern was priceless:
Richie: When did you get a gun? Fern: On our wedding day from my father with a note that said "Trust your instincts!"

This wasnt the best episode but it is still only one of two sitcoms that make me laugh weakly. The other is scrubs. Kat is hilarious from beginning to end. Holly has provided some memorable scenes but it does seem she is on her way out. I really do hope this gets picked up for another season.

Hate to see Holly go, rather they get rid of that loser Richie. I was really hoping Fern would shoot him so this show can get past his low self esteem and on to better stories. Holly and little Orpah could be very funny part are this show. But since they only seem to focus on Richie most of the time it really brings the show down. Best part of the show was when Palmer was talking to Kyle about her cousin being a buffer. Also liked the threesome talk where Kat flips it on Ethan and includes Kyle instead of Palmer. I can't help but think how much funnier this show is when Richie isn't in the scene. And I think if most of you really think about it you will agree. Plus everyone wanting Holly gone, please just remember the rabbit scene, the flying stop sign and many other pee your pants funny stuff that happens with her. Rather have that than a gun pointed at Richie, not that funny no matter how many lines you put around it.

I like Sara Gilbert, but her acting when she pulled out the gun just wasn't believable at all to me. I feel like she brought down the whole episode, quality-wise. This episode really wasn't the greatest - let's hope it's just an off-week.

This episiode was not that funny. Why was lena even in it. She just sat in the van the whole time.
I myself hate the extremely ackward scene in the kitchen about the "buffer" cousin.
I like Ethan and Kat. I also enjot Duncan and Nicole. I love Sara Gilbert but admit that they are writing Fern way too harsh.
The rest of the cast I find very expendable. If they just focused on these 4 characters they could have a much tighter ship. It is just a simplefact with so many haracters and so little time the show will remain uneven.

Lena was in the van because her legs are broken. I think she'd have trouble with the stairs.
Lucy Punch (Holly) asked to be let out of her contract.
I thought this episode was pretty funny and the writers and producers are still trying to figure out what direction to go in. I'm hoping they get rid of Holly/Perry and the gay guy. They detract from the rest of the bunch.

I realise Lena's legs are broke. I'm just saying the character really didn't add anything to this episiode.
I just visited the CBS website and not only is "Holly" missing from the pictures and Bios but she isn't even mentioned in the show description. How ever Duncans mom and Nicole's husband are both mentioned in the description.
I honestly can't blame the ctress if she asked to leave. Most of her characters scenes where stand alone "news" reports. The character never messed well when they tried to intergrate her with the others.

In my opinion this was one of the weakest episodes. I usually find everything with Kat and Ethan very funny, but a lot of the scenes with them last night were too awkward to be funny. Duncan and Nicole were good, but they didn't appear enough in this episode. Lina was shown even less, but I don't think that was the problem - I don't usually find her all that amusing anyway. And I think it might not be a bad idea to have Fern kill Holly, because then Richie would feel completely responsible and go back to being completely depressed and suicidal - which I always find hilarious.

First of all, I haven't seen all of the episodes of this show (this was probably the 4th). I have the other episodes on tape, just haven't had the time to catch up. Anyway, I thought this episode was very funny. I thought the 3 funny moments Michelle listed were funny. But, I actually thought the monkey wine was kind of funny. I also thought that the buffer thing was funny when Ethan was trying to describe to Palmer why gay guys are called that. After that, it did fall kind of flat. I also thought that "A gun! You must be Fern" was pretty funny, too. I really like all of the main characters except Holly. As I said, I have only seen a few episodes and there was only one that she was in alot. I really didn't find her funny in that episode (where she was trying to get Oprah into the school). I thought that she was just annoying. I really hope that they don't kill her off since this is a comedy. I love Richie and I don't think that the show would be the same without him. I think he is funny, it's just a different kind of humor. Yes, he does have low self esteem, but wouldn't you if you had that nut job telling you how worthless you are everyday.

It really is weird how opinions differ from site to site. On other sites I go to people were loving this episode.
I agree that this show has been uneven and they are still figuring out what works, but I thought earlier episodes were weaker than last night.
I also can't agree with getting rid of Richie. While I didn't love him last night, he is usually one of the best parts of the show for me.
I enjoyed most of the Kat/Ethan stuff despite Palmer. Though I agree the convo between Palmer and Kyle in the kitchen was awkward. Duncan and Nicole were good too.
As for Holly, still don't like her. I think she just doesn't mesh with the others and I don't find her being a caricture funny.
Though if Lucy asked out of her contract that seems odd too. Why ask out of a show that is almost done filming for the season anyway and might not be back for a second? Why not just wait and leave when the season is over? Something tells me the show probably wanted rid of the character as well.
