One Big Happy Family
Episode Recap: “Something New”
There are some remarks only family can get away with saying. “Mom, you slut,” is one of them. While these are words that would never come out of my mouth they barely raise an eyebrow in the Walker household. Truth be told, their being uttered during a family discussion recalling what music was playing when they each lost their virginity took the sting out of such a declaration, but it also goes to show the comfort level in this family.
This week we were in full wedding preparation mode with Kitty feeling that all planned elements for her big day were recycled. From her dress to her first dance with Robert – who, of course, had done this before. She had a point so we’re happy that she found a perfect dress to wear instead of Nora’s outdated and oversized hand-me-down. This also was a perfect moment for ABC to subtly remind viewers of the upcoming Dancing with the Stars finale by featuring a ballroom dancing sequence.
In the spirit of happily-ever-afters Kitty asked Rebecca to be a bride’s maid and had the nerve to be surprised that Rebecca had not expected an invitation to the wedding much less one to be in the bridal party. How quickly Kitty forgot her own relentlessly unwelcoming behavior to the sixth Walker.
I give Rebecca credit though for her handling of the Walker clan whose capricious behavior towards her was excuse enough to write them all off. By finally heeding Holly’s advice to stop playing the “shrinking violet” and speak her mind, Rebecca has finally claimed a spot at the table. Her outburst was long overdue given how Justin laid into her at the intervention though his heartfelt apology was worthy of acceptance. The story is a little different with the sisters. While it was nice to see that Sarah and Kitty feel they are all at a point where they can joke with their sister about the offenses they’ve had against each other – namely Rebecca’s dalliance with Joe – maybe these ladies ought to check with Rebecca about that. Was she being too sensitive to Sarah’s offhand remarks or was it that Rebecca is not yet used to the shorthand between the Walker siblings? Either way, Sarah’s snide comments leave one wondering if she has indeed truly let it go?
Holding grudges has normally been Kevin’s department. He’s been valiantly trying to change that personality quirk while also trying to accept the lack of communication from his significant other. Enter a little wine and lobster and a cute ex-boyfriend slash roommate and the countdown begins towards the end of his committed relationship. While it may be cliché that Jason would finally call Kevin just after Kevin had slept with Scotty, it is a relief that this non-relationship is over. Now, with no obstacles between them we hope that he and Scotty can make it work.
Oddly enough, Tommy is in a similar situation now that his wife and child are back. Julia showed up at the vineyard all smiles and sunshine as if she hadn’t absconded with their child and accused her husband of executing their other baby. Too bad Julia didn’t catch the looks Holly was tossing at Lena and Tommy when she suddenly appeared. Oh yeah, this is going to be ugly.
Lena may be playing the “I’ve moved on,” card but seriously, if she is not a total psycho then why would she follow up a failed affair with Tommy by dating his younger brother? She’s too cool right now, blithely accepting the break-up as if it had no effect on her, and that, of course, doesn’t bode well.
On another front, Nora is now dating Stan, an old flame played by Chevy Chase. It could be that I’m just out of it, but when did Chevy Chase become a silver fox? I suppose his gray mane was about as surprising as Lyle Lovett’s lovely, but tacked on appearance at the end of the show. It was certainly a cute and much needed moment between the Senator and Kitty but still a hurried one.
Hurried or not, this show manages to stuff a lot of story into one episode. I haven’t even mentioned Sarah’s new leading man played by Steven Weber. Hopefully, we’ll see more of him next week when the big day arrives. The previews show what looks to be a fight between Tommy and Justin, which we are to assume, involves Lena; and Kitty stops the wedding to share a secret with Robert. What it could be I have no idea. Will it derail the wedding for good? I’m not sure so, guess where I’ll be next Sunday at 10 PM?

I thought tonight was the wedding episode. I remember seeing the promos for it. Oh well.
Anyway, I could never talk with my family what was playing the night of my first time. That just shows how of a close family the Walkers are. The look on Kevin's face when Nora was explaining her first time was priceless.

Those Walker family discussions like tonight's "first time" are what I love about this show. MY family is like that, and I'm talking as the mom here.
I'm ready for the wedding to either get over with or never happen, just hurry up!! Not caring about those characters.
Lena is a sl*t. I'm sorry, but there's no other word for it that aptly describes her. I think there are going to be some repercussions and that doesn't interest me either.
I thought Chevy Chase was very good. Not making his usual crazy faces, just being a normal guy. I loved that storyline, about going back 40 years and finding your first love. But is it really that easy to find someone's email address online?

Ok, does Lena not know that Justin & Tommy are related? I remember that the first time that she had gone to the Walker house with Rebecca I don't think any of them were there, but still, it's Nora's house, surely there were some pictures around the house. I am just not liking her. I loved it when Holly asked her if she was going to be looking for another job & she said no & then Holly was like you might want to rethink the wardrobe. Come on. What the heck was she doing wearing that red dress with the black bra straps hanging out for to work anyways? Did she really think that was the way to win back Tommy? Eww.

If Lena knows that Tommy is Rebecca's brother and Justin is Rebecca's brother, um, wouldn't it be obvious that they are brothers, too?
I love this show, but the ending was just too formulaic. For starters we get the umpteenth promo with a sound clip that leads you to believe the wedding has been called off. And while ignoring her the whole ep Robert makes it all better with a long speech and pronouncement of his love with a grand gesture. The upside - I got a few minutes with Lyle Lovett. Can't complain about that!

I kinda like the Lena story and her sneaky way with the brothers. I thought for sure she knew Justin and Tommy were brothers, but perhaps she's just not into learning last names...
So Nora is cool enough to recogize the music of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" as Justin's first-time background soundtrack? Who knew?
And though Nora is a "Pretty Woman" couldn't we find someone better for her than Chevy Chase? Yuck!
So Jason could call his brother but not Kevin, the man he's in a relationship with -- and KEVIN has to do the breaking up with him? Seems as if Jason was intentionally putting distance between them. And does this mean we'll have to witness Jason returning to remove his things from the apartment? This storyline isn't over and is sure to rear it's ugly head sooner than we'd like.
Though Joe and Sarah initially made a nice couple, Steven Webber's character seems like a nice fit for the businesswoman. I'm sure he's got lots of stuff in his closet, so this could get very interesting...

I think Lena KNOWS they are brothers and is just being nasty....
She can't/won't/shouldn't end up pregnant by Tommy b/c Tommy can't father children (hence the whole Justin and Kevin donating for him and Julia and nobody finding out who the biological father is - by their choice), so Lena getting pregnant by Tommy isn't a viable (no pun intended) storyline.

Lena can't pregnant by Tommy, but she can get pregnant by Justin and say it is Tommy's - leading to the confrontation between Tommy and his wife. The kid won't be his, but the egg on his face sure will be!

ABC did the same thing with both of its shows last night - deliberately ran promos all week leading to Sunday night showing scenes from NEXT week's episodes of "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters." Very lame...
And of COURSE Lena knows that Tommy and Justin are brothers and she is making a deliberate play for Justin...he is sloppy seconds while providing a means for her to get her digs back at Tommy for dumping her. Holly and Rebecca are on the outside looking in as right now they are the only ones who truly know what she's up to with both of the Walker brothers...wonder if she'll try to "turn" Kevin next...ha ha! Or make a play for Kitty or Sara - or Julie!!!
Note to Rob Lowe - cut down on the tanning and the eye makeup. Not a good combination.
That wedding dress of Nora's was awful - it looked like a sack on both Kitty and Nora...and from next week's previews showing Nora dressed for the wedding, that CANNOT be the same dress even after being dyed - yeah, only if it is completely taken apart and resewn and then dyed another color...

OMG tvforever, I was so thinking the same exact thing about nora's dress in the promos for next week's epi...she's wearing a navy blue spaghetti strap and i know that she told the tailor to dye it midnight blue and raise the hem but the whole upper part (is that called bodice?) is completely different...we'll see. And yes, ABC totally ran the tornado promo for desperate housewives as if it was this past sunday's epi and that's next week's too...not nice ABC!
I loved this episode i thought the convo in the beginning about first time soundtracks was pretty true to life for the walkers and also for my family so its believable. I loved how they all walked out when nora started sharing her story. And it's prob pretty easy to find the email address of a professor...but what's the deal w/ nora dating professors?
I like the storylines that were setup tonight: scotty/kevin/jason, lena/tommy/justin, and sarah w/ her "business" consultant. Also now that Holly and Rebecca have talked about Lena i'm sure Holly will tell Rebecca what shes been doing w/ tommy, which I could see rebecca telling justin about. I think its funny though how rebecca has been very critical and leery of lena all along, yet it was her that introduced her to the walkers and got her the job basically at the winery. Interesting how someone can be good enough to be your friend but if they start to date your family they instantly become not good enough.

More Steven Webber. I hope he becomes a regular. I've missed him since Studio 60 was cancelled. Chevy Chase was excellent as Nora's high school boyfriend! I was expecting a jokester and was pleasantly surprised that he was more of the quiet type. This show has the BEST casting dept.
