Episode Recap: "The Estates of Hoffman"

Well, it's about time we visited Andy's house and got a closer look at his new life in the suburbs. And what's a better picture than P.J. and Co. crammed in Kenny's tiny car, Stephanie sitting shotgun (which she claimed with an early-morning text) and our tomboy sportswriter with a bag of beer between her legs? Oh, and let's not forget the reciting — in unison — of Italian terms.

Talk about curveballs, though. Meredith's pregnant again! It is pretty funny that Andy is essentially turning into his father — buying the same house, accidentally having a second child, staring out into oblivion on his lawn chair with a bottle of red in his hand, waiting for an escape route to pop up out of nowhere.

I did like getting out of the city for an episode, even if it was at a family barbecue — where the guys didn't seem to find any comfort… or luck. Brando, Mike and Kenny were the bloodthirsty cicadas, ready to pounce on divorced Rachel (Ali Hillis). Too bad Bobby swooped in at the end and won her over, even if it did take him hours to find the house.

And not only did we get a change of scenery this week, but we also got to meet the Franklins! P.J.'s mom is hilarious. "Oh, you don't mean that." How funny was it that she took one look at Lance's picture and told P.J. to date him? The look on Steph's face was priceless.

But it doesn't matter anyway, because Evan (Michael Landes) is the newbie on P.J.'s dating list, and I'm curious to see how this "nerd" factors into the Italy picture. The scenes for next week's finale really had me confused, so I can't wait to see who ends up next to her on the plane… if she even gets on it.

Sadly, tonight I don't have any favorite lines that stood out in my mind. This episode didn't hold up to the My Boys standard I'm used to — or the pedestal I've put this show on from the start. But I'm not disappointed to the point where I'd turn the channel.

Thoughts?

I really liked this episode. There probably weren't as many quotable lines this week because Andy, who usually has the best lines, was sitting in his backyard talking to a cicada for half the episode (what a funny/depressing scene by the way). This episode in general was a little somber because Andy was so down in the dumps. I hope we see more of his little dilemma in the next episode. It makes sense that we would because he didn't show up to Poker at the end.

What I thought was really funny was Bobby having a hard time finding the right house. Living in the suburbs, they really didn't exaggerate that much to get a laugh. The streets in a lot of new subdivisions do have the exact same name . The same cluster of stores tend to pop up around most subdivisions too.

I have been dissatisfied with the past few episodes, and there was little to save this one like the douchebag intervention or the street sign reading from previous kind of flat episodes. I bet next week will be an awesome episode for the sheer reason that some of the storylines really need a few minutes to stretch their legs, and I don't know if anyone notices, but there are a buttload of commercial breaks on any given episode. I watched a rerun of How I Met Your Mother earlier in the evening and it paced in commercials much better.
