Episode Recap: "D-bag in the City"

OK… can I just take Andy home with me? He's h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s. "Easy Seacrest." I'm still laughing. But he's right.... How disappointing was Brando's little "vods" and "fall in" phase? And the belt! It's too bad we didn't see more of Ryan Reynolds, because he usually keeps me laughing for a while. But we don't need anymore D-bag behavior. I mean, you don't "sweetie" P.J. while eating her food and rating her a 6 in front of her face!

Onto other disappointments... Lyssa (Abigail Spencer) and her friends were so eye-roll-worthy I got a headache. Can you say Carrie Bradshaw wannabe? That whole slow-motion car splash was just ridiculous. And if Kim Cattrall was watching, I feel for her. I didn't find them funny or entertaining at all. Lab Rat was an interesting scene. I live in New York, yes, but girls rolling around inside gerbil balls was still shocking. Aside from all the nonsense, I did relate to the storyline — friends do change as you get older, and relationships fade away. There was still that speck of reality in there, even though I felt this episode to be the most distant from my own experiences.

Smaller notes: I hope we meet Fitzy at some point, as well as Lance. With all this mention of the Italy trip, do you think we'll actually fly over the big blue sea with the girls?

Quotes that had me giggling:
• "I think I'm going to sandwich after I sofa here for a bit." — Andy

• "So Family Feud is a sport?" — Kenny

• "Don't your clothes have to get up for school tomorrow?" — Andy

Didn't really like the whole PJ's college friend storyline, but the rest of the episode was great. The letters had me rolling:

"Dear Brando, you've been acting like a douche lately. When you bail on us at the last minute, it really hurts my feelings. And last week you went all-in with a 7-4 offsuit and took all my money and it really sucked."

"When you tried to get me to buy the Fergie album, it made me feel so lonely... P.S. I don't understand your girl jeans."

"Kenny, when you act like you're on the Sopranos..."

More Andy Please!!!!!

He is so much funnier than just about everyone else. At first I thought it was because he got the best lines, but he did so much with two words - "Easy Seacrest".

Great recap, Megan. Don't your clothes have to get up for school tomorrow? is arguably the best line I've heard all week.

Another great episode, I wish Ryan Reynolds got more screentime, the douchebag intervention was awesome, I could really see my friends doing the same thing. Ripping on Sex in the City was great, especially since it comes on right after My Boys. However Andy stole the show, like always, hiding out at PJ's to not have to deal with Fitzy. Will we meet Fitzy next week at the BBQ in Hoffman Estates, hopefully Andy's wife will show up again next week, it'd be nice to see his daughter too.

UGH!! Other than the great quotes mentioned already (easy Seacrest and the Kenny on the Sopranos), this was the worst episode I have ever seen.

The Sex and the city girls were a waste of time, and I couldn't agree more that Kim Cattrall didn't need to see that. I wish I didn't see that. This part of the show did not work at all.

I should have watched the Hills instead!

I think you are all missing the point of the Sex & the City girls. I live in NYC too but I can still have a sense of humor about it. They were mocking how so many women aspire to be like the S&TC crew and how they think NYC is the only place in the world that matters. When the show first came out everyone I knew was like "Oh, I'm soo like Charlotte!" There are even shirts that say "I'm a Carrie" etc. I mean, the NY-Chicago guide book was hilarious. I too find myself comparing things in other cities to things in NY and I know I must sound pretentious doing so to others. I thought it was hysterical.

This episode ROCKED. Because of everything already mentioned. Because of the douchebag intervention. Because of Andy and his "sandwich" line. And, most importantly, because of the Sex & The City gag.

For all you out there who didn't like the SATC part, I think it's because you didn't get the full joke. It was HI-LARIOUS. I think many of you must not be diehard SATC fans, because if you were, you would have noticed that the My Boys writers spoofed EVERYTHING about the show. Not just bus splashing scene and girlfriend caricatures, but also Carrie Bradshaw's speech cadences and body language. It was brilliant.

And here's why it was even better than a gag: Because PJ is so THE OPPOSITE of a SATC girl and she still manages to be COOLER than they are! GET IT?

<sigh> I really expected you all to love this episode, so I'm a little disappointed with the responses. For me, this episode is up there with the Friends episode where Monica and Rachel lost the apartment in a trivia game.

EXCELLENT TELEVISION ALL AROUND.

I really wish we could have skipped the college friend story line and concentrated on the intervention with Brandon. I was sitting there very uncomfortable and disappointed with the episode (except for Andy's after I sofa for a bit, I will be sandwiching with the whole Fitzy storyline (wouldn't it be funny if we were somehow related to our favorite guest character, Trouty? whose real name it occurs to me we don't know) and then the boys reactions to the club was kind of funny). But whenever the letters started coming out and Andy's Kenny thing was hysterical, I wish it were longer (like even after Brando finally comes around, have Kenny be like, what do mean I act like the Sopranos, and Andy looking at him and saying, well, look what you are wearing)

I agree with dgjonesil! I expected everyone to LOVE this episode! This was one of my favorite My Boys eps ever and I can't wait to watch it again on my DVR.

Maybe the whole NY girls in Chicago thing was funny to me because I am a Chicagoan... When people from NY come to visit all they do is compare and talk about how much everything in Chicago is "second rate" compared to NY. That's why the whole NY guide to NY Places in Chicago was HILARIOUS!

The best thing about My Boys for me is that it is finally a Chicago show that gets Chicago right. From the bar with board games to the restaurant "Staley's" (which is modeled after a popular restaurant called "Stanley's) to Andy's joke about the Polish museum on the side of the Kennedy Expressway...all things funny if you get the subtle references. LOVE THIS SHOW!

(oh, and my fave moment last night was the Kitty Corner/Cat-a-corner/Catty Corner convo in the beginning. I've had that conversation thousands of times!)

Oh! I also forgot to mention that as a diehard fan of A&E's Intervention, the My Boys team got it right! Kudos, again!

And, thanks analytichick. Did you also pick up last week's mention of Plush, the west loop lounge? Very Chicago, indeed. ;)

I got all the SATC jokes (or most of them - you'd have to live in a bubble not to know about SATC, its characters, and some of their stories), I've lived in NY, and I really enjoy Chicago every time I visit. I just HATED Sex and the City when it was on, and I get the point the producers were trying to make - but it's something I figured out in the series premiere and that P.J. is so NOT like the SATC girls is one of the reasons I loved the show from the get-go. I didn't need a whole episode to drive that point home. And sure, there were some funny moments with them - like when they were in Lab Rat and Mike and the mock-Samantha (Veronica?) were talking and eventually Mike said "wait, what are we talking about?", but overall, that whole story line detracted from the episode for me, from the characters I have grown to love and from their witty exchanges. Just sayin'...

An amendment to my previous comment:

I do get all the SATC jokes and spoofs. I think they were unnecessary because this show doesn't need stuff like that. Also, the Samantha character was unwatchable!
