December 27, 2006: Fallen Heroes

Laurie Metcalf is a great guest star, and who didn't love her as wacky Aunt Jackie on Roseanne? I love how she's basically an older P.J. Quirky, funny, sitting at Crowley's with her niece's dopey friends. Welcome, Aunt Phyllis! Even better? Andy's reaction when he sees her: "Oh, no." And he was right....

Uh, good morning, Kenny. How awkward! But let me just point out... totally something Aunt Jackie would have done, too. Does Laurie just play crazy people? (Remember her psycho supermarket holdup on Desperate Housewives?) I felt very uncomfortable on behalf of P.J. and Andy — to have to watch their aunt groping their friend in public. Ick.

Wait, wait... Wendy's ringtone is "Here Comes the Bride." I honestly think the cell phones are hilarious. But I love that Brando wants P.J. to be his best man. I mean, they've been best everythings since forever ago, so it's only appropriate. And I still maintain that they should end up together, so I feel a wedding-turned-disaster coming on. And just like that, everything starts snowballing....

"You don't want to move to the suburbs?"
"You do?"

Oh boy. I'm with Brando: Screw the doves!

Pride and Lies

Poor Keith Luger. He got the work-transfer speech from Stephanie. The Orient? Reminds me of the Friends episode where Chandler tells Janice he's being transferred to Yemen. Seems like everybody's hush-hush in this episode. We haven't heard much until now about Mike's job, but Bobby's definitely in a tough spot knowing Mike is about to get canned. There's a friendship ethical dilemma if I've ever heard one.

On a more positive note, Brando's post-Wendy nondrinking idea is a good one. He can even taste and feel things again! Andy knows how to shoot him down from his high, though. "Adults don't dream." I swear he gets the best lines in the script. "Do you know the suicide rate against clams?" They just slip out of his mouth like a simple "Hello."

P.J. and Keith's second date is just filled with classic My Boys fare: the ugliest jacket I've ever seen, a bright yellow turtleneck, a crier and a very awkward kiss. Andy, by far, has the funniest breakup advice: Marry them and then later... die. I laugh out loud every time he speaks. Still, P.J. has to pull out every card in the deck to break it off — even some sideways comment about his face being mushed.

And just like that... the poker gang are back to their normal chatter. Silent Bob and Mike are on good terms. Brando's guzzling beers. And P.J... well, she's still taking care of her boys.

I'm really looking forward to tonight's finale. This has been such a fun show to get me through the rerun filled winter.

Does the look Aunt Phyllis gave PJ when Brando introduced his fiance mean she's always thought he and PJ would end up together? But what about the look Bobby gave PJ when she was trying to look "unhot" for her date? I could see her w/either guy but her friendship w/Brando is just so warm and comfortable. I think I want them to end up together.

Oh, and Andy? HILARIOUS!! They have him in just the right doses so he steals every scene. Anyway, thanks for the great blog and I look forward to reading your finale thoughts tomorrow!

I wonder why they rushed this show to a close. Showing 2 episodes at a time and now it's going away. I know it's coming back, but I have other 1/2 hour shows I see only once a week. I still watch them even though they aren't doubled up. Just thought I'd mention it.

These two eps were pretty blah. Not as funny as Tuesday night's eps. Andy cracks me up. His telling PJ to marry Keith and live with him until she dies was priceless.

I did love how the camera zoomed out when Brandon took that incredibly long swig of beer. And Stephanie's "I'm moving to the Orient" line. Who calls it that still?!

No mention of Neil Flynn (the angry janitor from scrubs)'s great performance as the jerky baseball star. I love how Bobby called him the "worst person ever".

I'm losing track of what happened in which episode, but I loved Andy's line, "This si my favorite episode of Gilmour Girls" when Mika and Bobby made up.
