Episode Recap: "The Knight on the Grid"
I find the Widow's Son serial killer case totally fascinating. Honestly, I don't know how they get so much info into one episode. With storylines like tonight's, which are so embroiled in secrecy and mysticism and intricate clues in code, I end up feeling like I can't even get up to use the bathroom for fear I'll miss something important. Every detail feels that essential. And you just don't get that from TV so often these days.
We found out more about Gorgonzola Gormagon tonight than we have yet, most importantly that there are two of them: A master cannibal, and his apprentice (a new apprentice, mind you, since the baby-eater croaked). Why you need to teach someone the proper way to eat human flesh, I do not know. I'm guessing it has more to do with the intricacies of picking one's kill, like making sure your victim's father died when your victim was young, or that his or her profession coincides with the characters on your ancient tapestry, or that his or her home is located along invisible upside-down-and-backwards paths throughout the city. You know, basic stuff like that. But the Gormagons seem to have a purpose to their killings that sets them apart from the rest of the killers on this show, who kill for revenge or love or by accident. And I don't know if that purpose is actually to undermine other secret societies like the Knights of Columbus (as Booth conjectured tonight), or if it's just a complicated way to get a snack, but it still makes me feel all icky on the inside.
The team found out tonight that the Gormagons' victims are connected by all of the above reasons. They also discovered that their perfect recreation of the artifact-filled bank vault had embedded in it a sort of camera that let the G-guys see everything the team was up to in there. During this whole episode, I kept finding little things like this that I questioned the plausibility of, but felt I needed to keep my mind off them for the sake of the awesome story being told. Ignorance is bliss.
B&B then tried to lure the G-guys by pretending to transport the silver skeleton to another location, but instead got their car blown up when the motorcycle-driving G-guy left a bomb for them in the middle of the road. At least they got a bit of a look at the young Gormagon, clad all in leather gear and threatening the lives of small children and half-naked lobbyists. It was genius how Hodge and Sweets figured out that the lobbyist would be the next victim after the musician and the priest, and I'm still loving Sweets' candor for this new aspect of his job. I kind of expected Bones to argue with his psychiatrist logic more than she has been, but hey, the kid actually has good observations every once in a while.
Bones' brother Russ also made a comeback from his life on the run, to be with his family in their time of need. Oh, and also because Daddy Bones lied and told him Booth wouldn't arrest him on his return. Is it just me, or does it seem as though their dad is trying to create this drama? He admitted he put himself in jail so he could be closer to his daughter, so is he now putting his son in jail to be closer to him too?
The last 10 minutes, where we saw the faces of both the (toothless) master Gormagon in his nursing home and the younger apprentice Gormagon popping out of the closet to kill the lobbyist, makes me wonder what more this arc has in store for us. Clearly we are meant to be creeped out. And oh buddy, I sure am.
Favorite Quote Time: Bones: "Russ turned himself in, but I convinced Booth to let him go see Hayley at the hospital." Miss Jillian: "I did not hear that." Bones: (slowly) "Russ, turned, himself in, but I convinced Booth, to let him go see Hayley at the hospital." Miss Jillian: "Do I have this straight? You're a genius?"

I don't know why, but after tonights episode...Sweets is really starting to creep me out...I think he is the new master Gormagon and is trying to recruit Bones' brother for his new apprentice...the kid who jumped out of the closet and killed the lobbyist resembled him a lot...but my suspicions were raised in the beginning when he seemed so fascinated with this case and always had a correct insight on it.

Excellent recap, Sandra. I also felt like I couldn't leave my TV for this entire episode, with all the little details included in this episode...the best one of the series so far, in my opinion! For once I loved the case as much as the personal interactions between the characters. It had equal portions of creepiness (old toothless man), disgusting body parts (kneecaps in the mail, bleeding through the envelope), humor (any scene with Caroline!), tenderness (Brennan reading to Hayley in the hospital), and much, much more. Plus, the performances were all so spot on tonight. Well done, writers and actors!!

Johnstory hit my thoughts, on the money. Last week, I found Sweets entertaining and enjoyed the new twist. Today, he only creeped me out with his dead-on insights to the Gormagon case. Like the other comments, I was so enthralled with this episode, I was surprised to see it was 9 o'clock! I was hoping for another fifteen minutes! Sweets as Gormagon makes me sick to my stomach, so I hope this proves to be false.

Okay call me a scaredy-cat but they were not playing "something is going to happen better beware" music during the closet scene, I was not expecting Gorgy and I screamed! I love that they got me like that.
I agree something is up with Sweets, I like him when he references Star Wars, but his teeth!! They are too perfect, as if he pulled his real teeth out and is wearing dentures?
And Booth was perfect tonight, being so nice to help Russ. Loved tonights episode!!!

Oh my GOSH! When they were showing the lobbyist at the end, I was thinking that he was Gormagon and he and his apprentice had staged it to make it look otherwise. I jumped when the guy popped out at the end!
So...I'm confused...did the teeth belong to the old master (nursing home man) or the new master?
I liked the look on Booth's face when Bones kissed his cheek to thank him for letting Russ see the girl.

Great Review! The episode was a great hour(45 min) of entertainment. Bones is finally accepting Booth as her protector. The cheek kiss was a big step for her. Loved DB's expression after it. That man is great with his expressions!

I must either have way too short an attention span, or I'm just plain stupid, but all of the details and clues in this Gormagon story arc have been a bit overwhelming for me. I've never missed an episode of "Bones", and yet I still feel as if I don't know what they're talking about half the time on this Gormagon case. To be honest, I enjoy the more self-contained stories better. They're easier for my feeble little mind to process!
Having said that, I still get a big kick out of just watching the characters interact with each other (especially Brennan and Booth, of course). And I do manage to follow the story somewhat.
As for this episode, I think we are perhaps being nudged, ever so gently, into suspecting Sweets, but if the writers are clever enough, he will turn out to be a red herring (that's mystery-speak for "false clue"). At least I HOPE the writers are clever enough to do that.
I can't help feeling sorry for Brennan's dad, too. He is desperately trying, from his little jail cell, to repair some of the damage he caused in his relationship with Bones, and Ryan O'Neill is great at coming up with that wounded puppy expression on his face--the half-smile with so much sadness and regret behind it. I do fall for it, I'll admit. The more Bones resists his attempts to remind her of happier times and his love for her, the more angry I get at her. Only occasionally does she give in, just a bit.

Best line of the night: "Call me Monsignor. Or Steve."
I did love his line though about just being a Band-Aid on the problem. I found it kind of refreshing that even a man of the cloth feels doubt sometimes about the world we live in.
When we first saw the van and the taxi cab, I thought the motorcyclist was part of the team. So I was surprised when they were surprised by him, and of course the minute he eyeballed them I knew there was trouble.
I hope I hope I hope Gorgy is not Dr. Sweets. I like him. I like his enthusiasm at getting out of his office and being part of the team. He so wants to belong. And kudos to Booth for not picking on the kid this week!
I too liked the look on Booth's face when Bones kissed him on the cheek. He didn't quite know what to do about that. Very sweet and well, kinda swoony.
And I laughed when Zack said "King of the lab!" and Hodgins had that look of horror on his face.

No disrespect, but IF sweets is Gor. and wants an apprentice, it wouldn’t be Russ. Sweets is 22, Bones about 30-31 and Russ is HER older brother by about 3 or 4 years. In the whole scheme of things, it’s not huge (Demi/Ashton, anyone?), but for an apprentice, big. The idea of an apprentice is to carry on when the master has retired or needs a visit from Ned. Emmet, and Chuck; (maybe Digby, too!) ☺
That being said, I too am thinking Sweets might be involved. I’m 50/50 on that as his actions last night might just be that of a normal 22 year coming through. Most 22 year olds are graduating college, but he’s already gone through college, medical school and is now a Psychiatrist for the FBI. I just thought of something, FBI does background checks up the wazoo, and they’ll have a huge PR fiasco if Sweets does turn out to be the bad guy. I digress. What I’m trying to say is Sweets is the older, Bones version of Doogie Howser or if you like, a younger, and more outgoing, Reid (Criminal Minds). I mean to say he might just be a 22 year old; the Star Wars comments, the “dude…”, “that’s gross…” would be typical. He may just have the Gideon-like chops to analyze something as quickly and as well as he did.
I paused on the ending face, and tried hard to figure out who it was. If they showed his face, it is probably someone we have seen previously. But the face was half in shadow and as I need analog, despite having an HDTV - captions cause phosphor burn it under HDTV – anyone wanna donate a 61” 1080p DLP ☺☻☺☻ - and it resembled, IMHO, Sweets AND Russ - very much Zack as well - he DID come back from Iraq changed. As I hadn’t seen the ‘angry’ facial expression from any of the actors, it was harder to tell as the face was distorted from the norm.

Great recap Sandra. I'm with everyone else, Sweets creeped me out this episode and I thought....oooo, he's Gormagon. But it almost seemed too red herring.
I also think Daddy Bones (love that) had Russ turn himself in because he thinks Booth is a stand-up guy and would do the right thing...I don't think he expected Booth to arrest him. But in the end, Booth did do the right thing and now Russ no longer has to be on the run.
Great moments for me:
Bones kissing Booth...Booth's reaction, priceless!
Anything with Caroline in it.

Loved this episode. Gormagon or Gorgonzola (whatever) is most definitely Sweets, or somebody close to him. I am thinking that it might be his brother or something. Right now he is adding a great element to the show with his insight and I love the Star Wars references, tonight and throughout this case. The witty repartee between B&B was point on last night. From the arguing after the explosion "It was because I was sat up front" to "It was because of your bad acting", I had to rewind the show on my DVR. The lobbyist and his comments were great too,"Because I got on a flight to turkey", and "It's Washington", in response to their summation of how there is a serial killer out there who is eating people. Can't wait for next week. Love the serial killer season arc and I can't wait to see how this plays out.

I must say I too suspect Sweets as being the bad guy. Initially I suspected, but then I was like, wait he is not old enough to have been the older guy's apprentice and then take over the baby eater, who was what, sixteen? I honestly would like to see that episode again. But then, the way Sweets was staring at Hodgins as he was giving his speech about the motive and then Hodgins stops and says, you think I am paranoid don't you. And then there is this pause. Okay, Sweets rarely pauses before he jumps in on Booth or Bones (also, so all the Freak & Greeks actors are super good subtle actors? Wow, I was impressed and creeped out by him). I rewound my DVR and really tried to see who the guy was, but they did a really good lighting and editing job so you can't really tell. What might be significant is during the lulling montage, we didn't see what Sweets was doing.

I rewound the end on my 52 inch HD and I'm like 90% sure it isn't Sweets. The hair was shorter and had no curl.
Love this episode! But I think I need to watch it again to catch everything. Loved Booth pulling Bones out of the car. And it was such a couples thing for them to fight afterwards.
The kiss was great. Brennan is slowly becoming aware of her feelings for Booth. And next week!
