« The Biggest Loser: Couples

Episode 5 Recap

Well if last week’s episode was the “Paul” episode then this week’s was the “Bob and Jillian” episode. Those two are featured more and more each season and tonight the game fell in their hands.

The campus was tense following Pink’s elimination and Purple was not happy with what went down. They thought they were being portrayed as lazy when in reality, they working their hardest. While the Camp Counselors were venting, Brittany was bonding. And who was she having a heart to heart with? Jillian. For the first time in all the seasons I’ve watched, Jillian has become human. Whereas before I saw her as the workout monster with no emotion, now I’m seeing how much her being a friend to these contestants is helping their mental strength.

At the challenge, Allison introduces a twist. Bob and Jillian are not just there to watch, but there to compete. I’m sure everyone was happy to have the tables turn on them for once. The biggest surprise though, was that whoever climbed the stairs 10 times first would pick their teams. And by picking the teams, the game was back to Blue vs. Black, Bob vs. Jillian. Bob picks Orange, Black and Grey to train with him. Clearly he’s at an advantage. More and more I’m jumping onto Team Jillian, when I’ve always been Team Bob in the past. The original blue team, Bernie and Brittany, are crushed. They feel like they got a slap in the face, and I agree. But the one good thing about Bob stacking his team with all the large men was seeing them attempt to do Yoga. Trent doing the “downward dog” was priceless.

I’m not even going to discuss the temptation because no-one fell for it and so it had no true effect in the game. Afterwards, we got an advertisement via Jillian, to chew Wrigley’s gum during a craving. Has anyone ever tried this and find that it works because I just don’t see how chewing a piece of gum could satisfy my need for a big, fat, slice of pizza. But moving on, the weigh-in begins. I have to give Brittany credit for expressing her feelings towards Bob not choosing her and Bernie. That had to tug at his heart just a bit. Blue was on a roll with everyone hitting pretty good numbers. Black is worried and so am I. Jen and Maggie lose 6 and 7 respectively, and are ecstatic, but that changes quickly. Brittany loses only 2, Kelly loses 0 and Paul gains 3, what a nightmare! And I have to give Dan credit for being the biggest loser of the week for a third time. After Black deliberates, the voting begins. Jenn gets voted out 4-2 over Kelly. Despite that I really like Jenn and wanted her to stay, Black just couldn’t get rid of Kelly because of the numbers she could potentially pull. And after weeks of falling below the yellow line, it was hard to justify saving Jenn once again.

How will Maggie cope next week without her best friend? Will the underdogs make a comeback? For more of The Biggest Loser, check out our Online Video Guide

Maybe it's just because I'm stressed out (I'm away from home tonight taking my mother for a procedure that apparently can't be done close to home) but I was kinda pissed at Bob. At first I wasn't...

Then the teams all started discussing how Bob obviously went for the big guys (and one gal). I might not have noticed it otherwise but now that I see it I can't see anything else.

I was actually surprised when the show aired footage of the contestants being unhappy about the trainers (for reasons other than "they're too tough!") Bob and Jillian are a major part of the Biggest Loser brand. But I'm glad they did and I also give credit to Brittany for speaking out about being upset. They showed a quick reaction of Bob but I really wanted something more! Again, this might just be because of my mood. I wanted him to say he was so sorry and maybe shed some tears.

But that's just me. I was waiting for someone on the Black Team to say, after there was no doubt the Blue Team would win, "Well, congratulations Bob. Looks like you'll win this week." Then more Bob tears.

Geez. I'm pretty harsh tonight. I realize it is a game for the contestants--but it's nothing more than bragging rights for the trainers. But...I suppose you could argue he won the stair challenge fairly. But Jillian also admitted to not wanting to pick the teams anyway. And the reaction of the rejected members is why.

I agree she's more human than ever. It's really nice to see more of them as time goes on. I always liked Bob (except maybe tonight) but now Jillian is really growing on me as well.

Now--about the gum thing. Sometimes if I find I'm in a snacking mood I will just pop in some gum. Once I have the minty flavor in my mouth I find I don't want to ruin it with food. So, it keeps me from snacking at that moment. I couldn't say the same for bubble gums or any flavor other than mint. I equate mint with clean. Also, the same is true if I brush my teeth. I don't want to ruin the clean.

But once the gum loses taste or the tooth brushing isn't as fresh, all bets are off. But at least, temporarily, I didn't want the food. It's worth a shot. Sure, you still want the pizza...but maybe later. And maybe by the time it's later you'll have lost the craving. Nothing to lose to chew a piece of gum that costs only a few cents! My own personal advertisement is that I chew Trident. Not Wrigley's. Take that, Biggest Loser.

OK, time to sleep off this bad mood!

The deck is totally stacked in Bob's favour, but can I be mad at him? Not really. Because Jillian would have done the same darn thing. We all know it. Jillian has in the past surrounded herself with big guys too. Men lose weight easier. And after four series in a row losing, Bob is more than due a win.

My only problem is I wanted those brothers gone -- the old black team. I wanted those guys out of there so bad I could taste it. And now I think they're safe for at least a couple weeks.

And the old blue team? I totally buy that Bob had her in mind when he left them to Jillian. We saw her bond with Jillian early in the episode.

If I was on the show, I'd totally want Bob as my trainer, though it would work against me because I'd spend all my time staring at him and trying to flirt. *cough* I like Bob.

I so wanted Bob's team to lose the weigh in so (old) black and gray could vote Jackie off. I really dislike her!!!!! Maybe next week.

I always root for Jillian's team but would love for one of the gray guys to take the prize - they seem like genuinely nice people. Go Trent and Roger!

Why didnt anyone on the show or anyone else remember that Orange threw the weigh in last week and that is why Dan and his mom lost so much. It wasnt real (I mean they lost the weight, but it was also their weight from last week). I was really waiting for Bob to say something about it, since it was so obvious. I used to love Orange, and now they are both getting really cocky and annoying. I am rooting for the underdogs!

Not bringing up last week was a very stupid thing, I agree. Last week Black and Yellow were fighting for their lives and lost really good numbers -- of course those two pairs weren't going to do as well this week.

Yes, Orange water loaded last week, which could explain their bigger numbers this week, but Blue also water loaded last week and Brittany only lost 2 pounds and Bernie only lost like 5, so it wasn't a given that Orange would have a big week.

I love Bob but agree that he definitely stacked his team. Who wouldn't??? The ironic thing is that on the first show, a lot of the teams didn't want Bob..they wanted Jillian so why all the belly aching? I know that Blue originally had Bob and wanted him but get over it. I was also surprised that there was no mention of the water loading last week but like someone pointed out, it didn't seem to have a huge effect for some people.

For the record, Bob hasn't lost every season. He won with the guy that owned the deli - ERIK. It was season 3 that he won.

I'm just glad that it's back to Bob and Jillian. I was never a huge Kim fan. Go Bob!

i agree with pretty much everything here---disappointed in bob (although his reaction to britney's brave statement could have been edited out, maybe), see jillian is human, would want bob to train me, want one of the gray guys to win---and would also have a hard time concentrating with bob as my trainer. Scotty, i challenge you to a Flirt Off!!!

I'm a little late to post because I just finished watching the episode. Smug, smug Bob...who'da thunk it? I think Jillian tossed the challenge. She didn't want to pick teams and I believed her when she said so.

I think Bob deliberately stacked his team and that's not for the good of the contestants, that's for the good of Bob. It was like the jock who picks all the jocks for his team and the nerds are left standing and kicking rocks at their feet. It was sad to watch really because that's the kind of behavior those people have been privy to most of their lives. I was disappointed in Bob, but then again, maybe the shows producers directed him to pick this way. Still, I think this made Bob look bad.

Nobody mentioned the fact that they completely tossed the "couple" aspect of the show. I think this is a loss for the show because having a buddy to cheer you on and support your failures is so important in losing major weight. I think the producers missed the mark when they changed the show back to the regular format. I would have loved to have seen which two people kept pace with each other.

Of course, the other side of this is one partner may bolster the other one consistently and that's why they reverted to one on one teams. But, it seems like the couples are all keeping pace with each other. Jenn was the only one who really didn't keep up with her teammate. The same can even be said for Kelly and Paul, neither of whom performed. I would like to know just what food issues they have in the house. We see them training themselves hard, but just what are they eating besides "Weight Control oatmeal" and "gum".
(I refuse to state the product names. LOL) Jillian referenced it in the weigh-in so I'd like to know more of what happened there.

The temptation challenge was lame. The fact that the star was on the first cup probably threw all the contestants for a loop. The producers probably knew nobody would take the bait so they made it too easy to trick them for next time.

i forgot about that, i've been meanig to ask if anyone knows how the food works. did paul eat too much, and what did he eat, or was all his weight loss the week before just water weight?

are they allowed to bring in snacks, or are they frisked like someone going into rehab?

I was waiting for Bob's reaction to Brittney, and very disappointed to see that the editors chose to show a later shot of Bob instead and made it look like it was real-time. In the shot they showed, he was holding a blue team shirt - which wouldn't have happened until one of his guys took it off and handed it to him to hold as he was being weighed. Brittney spoke about her feelings before anyone was weighed.

We don't know what his actual reaction was, and that stinks. I too was disappointed in Bob but we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. How is it that all of the blue shirts fit the smaller team members and didn't swim on them as they would have if they were "one size fits all"? Hmmmmmmmmmm????
