« The Biggest Loser: Couples

Recap: Episode 14

This week was unlike any other Biggest Loser episode we’ve seen. The 5 remaining contestants were taken to Australia to compete for a week in what Bob told us is the 2nd most overweight country after the US. When they arrive, they’re met by their trainers. Ali introduces “Uncle Max” who then leads them in a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony meant to rid their troubles and bring them luck. As they take it all in, Ali gets emotional, realizing how lucky they are to be there.

Next they move into The Biggest Loser Australia house which is a nice upgrade from the campus. Getting ready to go out, Ali has trouble being confident in her new clothes and feels she still needs to work on certain areas. I have to say she looks fabulous and hopefully once she watches herself on tape, she’ll feel fabulous. Bob and Jillian take the gang to dinner and dancing to show them how to go out but not kill their diet. They continue this the next day by going to a local farmer’s market to see alternatives to hotel food and city restaurants. Of course, hilarity ensues.

Back at the house, Kelly gets a knock on her door. It’s Adro, the Australian Biggest Loser. What a cutie! He takes the group to lunch and shows them his before photos and its hard to believe that it’s the same guy. He goes on to speak about his life-changing “jump off a tree” moment during his season and though it’s a bit far-fetched, the message shines through.

The challenge this week is the toughest yet. Before they even begin, they climb the Sidney Harbor Bridge and boy is it high at the top. Ali finishes the the first leg in the lead with Mark close behind her. Jay is in third, Kelly’s behind him and Roger is no where to be seen. Mark is able to pass Ali during the running section, but when she reaches the top of the building she sees him there waiting. Mark decided they should finish the race together. Jay finishes soon after and when Roger arrives, they all go back down a few flights to support Kelly and finish as one. And once again, Mark starts crying. I think we could make a drinking game out of his emotions!

At the Australian weigh-in, Jay is up first and is disappointed to learn that he has gained a pound. Could this be a bad sign for everyone? NBC news cut in so I missed Ali’s weigh-in but apparently she did well. Roger loses 2 pounds to go below his high school weight. Kelly loses 1 pound which she’s sure isn’t enough to keep her safe. Fortunately for her, Mark gained a pound to go below the line with his brother. I’m happy that Kelly is safe, I’d like to see her in the finals. In what could be a tough deliberation, Jay decides to make it easier on his friends and volunteers to go home. An emotional elimination round comes to an end and the remaining contestants are ready to head back to their home campus. But we couldn’t possibly end without a twist, as they find out their trainers won’t be there when they arrive.

Any last predictions for final three? Who should America vote to keep in?

first post of the evening:).
Hate to admit it but Mark has grown on me. Happy to see him apart of the final 4. Rooting for Kelly, Ally final 2 but it is hard to imagine Ally losing more weight, she looks like she is at a happy healthy maintainable weight now.

That was so much more enjoyable than last week. To see Mark waiting at the top of that tower for Ali shows just how much he has grown as a person. And I have to add that a group of bonded "Losers" was a better show than last week's divided group. It is certainly getting harder on them at elimination time though. This week's results show just how hard it can be to lose weight when traveling. I was glad for more food and restaurant tips on the show as well, and I had to laugh at the Travelocity and Ziploc close ups.

Umm, Bob, you do realize that the USA is not a continent, but a country, right? Stoopid No-Trainer-Left-Behind policy!

Gotta say, and I thought I'd never would, but way to go Mark. Lots of personal growth through this process; very impressed the way he waited for Ali at the top of the building. And how funny was it when his wife told him to man up. Kinda surprised we haven't seen Kleenex join Subway and ZipLoc as a major sponsor this season, what with all the waterworks. Almost makes me miss the backstabbing gamesmanship.

Speaking of which, how silly was it to let Jay take himself out of the game. Mark is obviously the biggest threat, with Ali a close second. Was pretty cool to see Rog on the decision making side considering the vast conspiracy on everyone's part to make him the next to vote off. I loves me some irony, I do.

Robyn, I guess you live in the NY area, 'cause I missed Ali's numbers too. Hell of a time for programus interruptus. What's the matter with a crawl, WNBC? It's obvious you don't mind taking up valuable screen real estate from what we had to endure of those promos for the Olympics...IN 4 FREAKING MONTHS!!! Anywho, I think I heard Roger say she lost 3lbs.

hgmsnoopy, how about that close-up of the Extra gum when we got to see Jay's update? Too damn funny.

All I have to say is YAY KELLY!

If America doesn't vote to put her in the final three (should she land in the bottom two next week), I'm boycotting the USA. (I'm Canadian -- I can do that.)

I was thinking that you could have a drinking game every time Mark cried too!
I want Kelly to win, but I'm afraid without her trainer, she won't be pushed hard enough. I hope I'm wrong. Go Kelly!

Since I'm watching the Austrailia BL on tv now (on a canadian channel), I was a little annoyed to be "spoiled" with the winner - oh well - I love Adro.

Good episode - Bob and the continent comment made me laugh. I'll miss him next week.

Am I the only one who thinks that Mark started to "bond" with Ali as a game play move? Ali is a strong competitor and I think they all know she isn't likely to be in the bottom two which means she'll always have a vote. I think he waited for her and started to act like her buddy to make an alliance. Not that he doesn't like her too but I think it was more game play tahn anything else. That guy likes to win and would have never "tied" just to be nice. It's a game.

Thanks for a couple of people verifying what I thought I heard Bob say. "Australia is the second most overweight continent, and the most overweight is USA" WHAT.... since when did the USA become it's own continent. I wasn't sure that's what he said.

Also didn't the all stay in a hotel not the Australia campus? Let's all go over to Travelocity to look at the hotel, it show you everything and gives you actual guest reviews...

Last I don't think the trainers not being there next week was a "twist" don't they do that every season on the last week. The twist was that America is voting on who they want to keep in the finals.

Mark and his crying is driving me insane! I wanted him to go so bad so I don't have to watch that any more.

I'm beginning to think that Mark is going to have a lot of problems readjusting to life off campus. It seems that not only has he lost a tremendous amount of weight but that emotionally & psychologically he's changed dramatically, too. The phone call with his wife hinted at that. Her "man up" comment was telling. Is he going to get the kind of understanding and support he needs at home to maintain his weight loss? Or is he going to get, "We miss the old Mark and we want him back - even if that means with the weight."

My biggest pet peeve with Mark (beyond the constant crying) - shave the damn beard or stop playing with it! If I see him run his fingers over it one more time....

not to split hairs here, robyn, but mark actually passed ali on the bike leg of the race.

Is next week the finale or are there 2 more weeks?

I agree with Liz985 about Mark possibly having a problem readjusting to life off-campus. If I remember correctly, his wife is overweight and I know from experience how tough it is to diet when you are the only one in the house actually trying to diet. Will she actually want to adopt his new healthy lifestyle for herself, or will she resent it and feel that she's being pushed into a lifestyle that she's not ready for. Maintaining a healthy weight takes a lot of work and commitment, and having support at home is crucial. Unconditional love is great, ie., loving a person no matter what their size is, but if it leads that person back into an unhealthy way of life, then it's not the best kind of love.
