« The Biggest Loser: Couples
Recap: Episode 8
Tonight’s episode was great. I always love when the contestants go home and this season we got to see it relatively early on. As expected everyone was excited but extremely hesitant to leave the campus. We got to see a glimpse of everyone’s home life, how Mark’s wife had lost weight as well, how Jackie and Dan were now able to play with kids in their program. And we of course got to see everyone out to dinner. Most fared extremely well by eating fish and drinking water, but Paul certainly went off the deep end with his never ending plate of wings. We even got a hint of Bob and Jillian as Bob became superimposed on Roger’s shoulder during his workout and Jillian gave Brittney a little call during dinner to see how she was doing. And no Biggest Loser would be complete without out the usual share of advertisements, this week being for Subway and Ziploc.
After the week ends, the contestants return to the campus, ready for the challenge. This time, the winner would be able to choose 2 people from the opposing team to weigh-in 24 hours early. Although the challenge looked fun, it definitely seemed tough. Half-way through, Roger calls for a draw but Black won’t give in, they’re in it to win it, and this ends up a smart choice for them as they win, choosing Dan and Roger to weigh-in early. And boy did a prize ever NOT be an advantage. Dan loses 11 pounds and Rogers loses 16. Doesn’t seem like them weighing in early affected their numbers one bit.
At the beginning of the regular weigh-in, Black learns about the huge numbers Roger and Dan pulled. Continuing down this successful path, Mark loses 13 pounds and his brother loses 16. I kept thinking that this couldn’t be possible. Isn’t being home supposed to keep them from losing? It sure did when Hollie and Julie went home midseason last year. With the Black team needing to lose 60 pounds, it was clear they weren’t going to pull out a win again. Overall they do ok but nothing spectacular.
It isn’t a surprise when Paul gets voted out. Despite the fact that he annoyed everyone by wearing a yellow t-shirt, the numbers were stacked against him and his alliance with Kelly wasn’t strong enough to keep him in the game. I was really rooting for Paul but I like everyone on the Black team so they just need start winning again so no-one goes home. So who are you all rooting for? It’s getting down to the wire, any predictions for final four?

After this, I thought the Blues would have a hard time next week, but then the Black team kicked off one of their best players, so I don't have much hope for them. Did they even CONSIDER percentages? Paul lost good numbers week after week! Kelly also does good numbers each week, but I'm betting she's next to go. (It was odd to not see her crying at a weigh in -- or did I miss it?)
Also, this means the Blue team next week may have an advantage because two of their players will be weighed for 8 days worth of weight loss since Dan and Roger were weighed a day early.

I knew the Black team was going to lose even before the challenge; it was obvious by the support the Blue team members were getting at home (you really saw them eating right & exercising)and getting tons of emotional support as well.
The Black team made a big mistake voting off Paul since he was good at the weigh-ins and the challenges.
I don't really have a favorite right now (leaning towards Dan & Roger) as long as Mark doesn't win, I'll be happy.

Wow...Paul and his girlfriend had only been dating 6 weeks prior to his leaving for campus. I don't know why I'm bringing this up. I guess I just find it interesting that the relationship held up and it does perhaps explain why he was so open about his feelings towards his ex-wife. Six weeks isn't really a long enough time (in my opinion) to make a major commitment. I had been assuming his girlfriend had been with him for a year or so.
I still feel bad for her while she watches this on TV--but it seems as though she wasn't deluded about Paul's possible feelings toward his ex. So...that's good I suppose. And he seems to have come to his senses by the time he was ousted.
Anyway, it wasn't a shock to see him go. I was a bit sad he left on such a bad note with the rest of his team. I don't see him losing the most weight by the finale. I think he is going to have the toughest time. When he kept reaching for wing after wing I just wanted to slap him through the screen.
I was also irritated the place gave out free wings in the first place (that was what happened, right?) Does that business not understand why Paul was on the show? I just found that a bit idiotic of them. Give out one wing per person then give them all the celery they can eat to go with it or something else like that!
I don't have a favorite yet. I have a least favorite and I'm sure you can guess it in one.

I hope Roger is The Biggest Loser. He has quietly been doing the work to lose the weight. He pulls consistent numbers, he seems to be a good guy to everyone not just team members. Also, he has the most to lose and that seems to lead to winners.

What annoyed the heck out of me is when Paul's girlfriend slid the wings right over to Paul!
Jeez lady! He's trying to lose weight and you're not helping one bit. I wanted to smack her.
If my boyfriend was on the verge of a heart attack, I would NOT be encouraging him to eat garbage.

Did anyone else notice how much Paul's girlfriend looks like Kelly? Right down to the curly hair!
I'm not surprised to see Paul go. Honestly, he only had a couple of weeks where he pulled really good blue team-like numbers. He was never consistent enough to be a real contributor to their weight loss. Was he better than Maggie? Yes, but not good enough.
He left a really bad taste in my mouth at the elimination. I had been rooting for him all season (loved his kung fu episode) but he was just mean that night. Good for Kelly (who I don't like that much) for having the good sense to NOT wear a yellow shirt! I know she had immunity, but it wouldn't have been pretty for her after that had she stuck with Paul.
I really do not like Mark and Jay. Even more so after this. I can totally understand Mark not wanting his kids to fall into the same lifestyle he did, but to throw the food away and say they would no longer have that kind of food in the house because HE can't eat it? Doesn't that kinda go against what Bob is trying to teach them? He has to learn to say no to temptation, not eliminate it so he doesn't have to worry about saying no. That was just all kinds of selfish.
Roger is the only blue team member I like, but I'm really rooting for Brittany and Bernie!

kkm1212, ITA about Mark's behavior at the homecoming. Quite the Pastry Nazi! And even though it's certainly not healthy fair, it still annoys me to see perfectly "good" food tossed in the garbage. Was it just me, or did it seem like the families were encouraged to have just about the worst food temptations possible at their respective parties? Makes for good TV, I guess.
I see we're all in agreement that Paul was doomed from the start. I noticed that almost to a person, everyone who greeted him was nowhere near their ideal weight. That does not make for a good support system at all. Seeing as the only exercise the producers showed him doing while at home was lifting never-ending plates of chicken wings, it was a given that Jillian was gonna be fuming when they returned to the ranch. And to ignore her phone calls? Dude, where's your fortitude? Glad he won a lifetime membership at the fitness club, but I think he would have been just as happy to win a lifetime supply of "Hooters" wings.
For me the elimination last night was kinda surprising. They really make it look like Kelly was going to vote off Paul, especially when he was touching her and saying it was going to be OK (those PDAs still creep me out, I can only imagine what his girlfriend thinks). And then Maggie sure made it sound like she was referring to Bernie while announcing her decision; when did she become so affectionate towards Paul? Weird! Glad to see him get the boot, and the yellow shirt deal was certainly the nail in his coffin. At some point people are going to start voting the threats, so if your not going to endear yourself to you team, good numbers are going to work against you as much as be an advantage.
Congrats to Team Blue. And keep up the good work, Brittney. After seeing your mom, your gonna be a knockout once you reach your goal. Not that Plus means a person can't be attractive; I'm just sayin.
Now my pet peeve. Last season the good folks at Zip-lock tried to convince us that their bags are better than Food-Saver vacuum packaging (CLEARLY not the case, speaking from personal experience), and last night Jillian was extolling the virtues of using their micro-friendly cooking bags. Not a bad idea if your in a hurry, but a glass bowl with a plate on top would do the exact same thing with nothing to add to the waste stream. I thought we were going green with those Brita water bottles and the eco-friendly tips? And never, NEVER, put broccoli in the nuke, people. It's a proven fact that almost all the nutrition is killed during the heating process. Don't know why, but I heard it from multiple sources that it's not a good idea. Considering steaming only takes 5 min. it's really not a big deal anyway.

I know I'm in the minority but I'm glad to see Paul go. He was not a team player (as evidenced by his yellow t-shirt) and he had a subtly controlling and aggressive style that I did not like. After seeing the episode where he admitted to being physically abused by his father, I can see where he might get that and I feel sorry for him. But watching his behavior last night where he deliberately baited the other Black Team members with the t-shirt and then behaved as though he was being unfairly attacked when they reacted, I think it was fitting that the 3 members formed an alliance and voted him off. I also think it will be good for Kelly to break away from his influence. I think his constant attempts to make it seem as though it was the 2 of them against the world were unhealthy for her. In my opinion, Paul has a lot of emotional and psychological issues to work through before he'll be truly successful at taking and keeping off the weight.

Nobody has mentioned how Paul fared after arriving home from elimination. Is it just me, or wouldn't having double pneumonia actually make you lose even more weight instead of gaining? I know when I've been really sick with flu or pneumonia I've lost all kinds of weight, even if it was just mostly water. And if he wasn't able to exercise wouldn't all that muscle he accumulated turn back into fat, causing another drop in weight (since muscle weighs more)? Call me crazy but I'm just saying...if he was really that ill I feel bad for him but something seems a little fishy to me. Perhaps a good excuse for just consuming more wings and soda?

I agree GG. Something seemed way off about that. I guess time will tell and we'll know how he is really doing at the finale, but I don't have a lot of faith in him. I think he needed to be there for the accountability aspect. It's clear that he isn't getting that at home and left to his own devices, he is bound to end up even heavier than before.

First of all... I friggin' LOVE this show. I could watch it every single day (although i feel guilty when I sit there eating Oreos while watching
I'm glad to see Paul go. Deep down I think he had a really mean spirit. And would you not be totally concerned if you were his new girlfriend considering he still loves his ex wife?! But she does encourage him to eat whatever he wants so maybe that is true love (slash totally bizarre).
Not really sure who I'm rooting for (maybe Dan?) but I'd really like to see a woman win. The odds are virtually impossible for a lady to be top dog and I wish there could be a male and female winner.
Can't wait till next week!

thanks for the tip of steaming with a glass bowl and plate. this might be a dumb question, but it doesnt pop off or anything?
i thought that was odd too, if you're so sick you're in the hospital (wasnt he in a hospital bed?), then you DONT gain weight. unless of course you are addicted to hotwings and are in a toxic environment for someone trying to lsoe weight. i was disappointed with his excuse-making. he'll never lost the weight until he deals with the ugliness of his childhood.
i ate chips the whole time. i would say it was my rebel coming out, but i pretty much eat them every day. hey, i wonder if that has anything to do with my weight problems!?!?!?

You know who I'd like to see win? Brittany. I just love her attitude, especially when it comes to the challenges. She just does not give up. She had Jay asking for a draw with that over/under challenge, but she just kept at it and won. She's done that in other challenges, too. For instance, the escalator challenge. She was a trojan trying to win that thing; and she almost did. I just think she's got the right perspective to be there and win -- no excuses, try your hardest, and don't give up.

I also said that Paul's girlfriend looks just like Kelly...I guess he likes the same type of woman...or maybe trying to replace his ex-wife with a look-a-like...I also didn't like how Paul's girlfriend was passing those wings...I think she could be an enabler as far as Pauls weight is concern, and i also don't see how Paul gained back 3 lbs if he was so sick maybe his girlfriend brought him wings to make him feel better..lol...GO BRITTANY!!
