« America's Next Top Model

Episode Recap: We Are Spartans!

Hey all, Gina here again (you may remember me for my prior subbing)—and I'll be taking over for Adam with the last few episodes of Top Model. But before we jump in to tonight's episode, I just need to share one little thing from last week. Never, I repeat, ne-ver, have I laughed so hard than when I saw Lauren attempt to act. That is all.

So tonight's episode started out with the usual chitter-chatter from the ladies. Whitney is freaking out from her botched performance on the last shoot, and Fatima is being exceptionally conceited. Then came the "Tyra-mail" and the girls were off. Where they ended up—by Roman ruins for a little lesson in…wait for it…gladiator combat. Fatima couldn't really seem to grasp the concept, but then again, graceful decapitation is probably trickier than it sounds.

As a little surprise, instead of a pose-off type challenge, the girls had a "photo challenge" where they each were given five frames to pose while fighting a goliath-sized, grunting gladiator. Anya paid attention during class and did well, Kat not so much. Fatima tanked. And Dominique, our favorite, must have gotten confused and thought the challenge was who could emulate the Karate Kid crane post best. But the winner—Whitney. I do love how Tyra and Co. tried to stir up some trouble by offering 1,000 Euro shopping spree that Whitney could have had for herself or split with a friend. Whether she's a good person or just didn't want to look like a greedy bastard on national television, she decided to split her winnings with Anya.

And then came the moment you all were waiting for—Tyra playing photographer (with her ego in tow). The girls hit up a sweet, fresco-drenched castle for a "modern interpretation of the Renaissance." All I can say is last I checked, there's nothing Renaissance about those heinous wigs, no matter what kind of "modern" spin you put on it. Since there was only five girls, and we heard Tyra and Jay's comments after each one, it was cake predicting that the bottom two would be the only ones Tyra had anything negative to say about—Kat and Whitney.

At the panel, after Tyra so graciously welcomed the girls in French (yes, they are in Rome), Anya was up first. They couldn't get enough of her. But WAIT. We had to turn the attention back to Tyra—could you believe she never worked with artificial light?! Good thing the pic of her mom was included in the episode! Anywho, moving on, the judges loved Fatima and Dominique. But thank god they commented on Dominique's keen fashion sense with those maroon leggings of hers because I was dying when I saw that outfit. Neither Kat nor Whitney did much to impress the judges leaving them, as predicted, in the bottom two. And the unlucky chicky tonight—Kat.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting that decision. I thought Tyra had figured she had appeased the masses enough by keeping the plus-sized model on for this long and couldn't get any flack if she let Whitney go at this point. But, apparently the fact that Kat is stunning and the fan favorite wasn't enough to keep her safe. Maybe I'm just bitter that she went home and Dominique is in the final four.

How do you feel about tonight's episode? Do you think the right person went home? Could it be a plus-sized model may be the next Top Model? Was Paulina's comment about Dominique's face having "interesting bones" was her p.c. way of saying she looks like a tranny? Let's hear it!

Kat continued to be boring this week and her photo shoot didn't go as well as the other girls, so I think that Kat should have went this week as much as Dominique and Fatima continue to bug. Both of them think that they are the best ones when based on challenges, I think that title goes to Anya. I hate how catty Fatima is, though Dominique has thankfully stopped talking in the third person, who does that?

I do enjoy Whitney and I am glad that a plus size model actually has a chance to win this cycle. I don't really think it's going to happen considering how often she seems to be in the bottom two lately but I would rather it was her or Anya than Fatima or Dominique.

Between Kat and Whitney I do think the judges made the right decision based on her performance today. However, Kat and Whitney were definately my favorite and I'm sad to see Kat go. Fatima and Dominique are my least favorite girls and got to go. Fatima just gets on my nerves and Dominique doesn't have the right look. Here's hoping Anya and Whitney are the final two.

How odd that Tyra calls herself "mama" when she has been the least maternal with this group than ever before!! She is just on a huge ego boost and the rest of the judges are there to prop her up!
Dom looks like a man and and old one at that. Fatima's bone structure isn't that fantastic!! Kat will work, no matter what. I love it when they say Anya just says whatever they want to hear!! But still Kat didn't have a prayer. Tyra didn't like her, and that was the kiss of death!! Good luck Whitney! My 19 year old son was SHOCKED when walking in the room and seeing gorgeous Whitney and hearing she is a Plus size model!!
Not at all! Just gorgeous and curvy!

Tyra shows her favratism more and more, and it bugs the heck out of me. I want Anya to win, but since no one in the fashion industry takes ANTM seriously, maybe she should go home early so she can go on to have a great career.

My daughter's best friend is a model in NYC and says that before the end of the season, most of the models have been signed by one agency or another. But the model that has won that works the most is the Hispanic one (I can't remember her name) Tootie isn't working at all! Even the models from Bravo's Make me a Supermodel are signed. Two of the boys are signed at NY models where she is signed!!
I think they get signed for being on the show, but not all work regurlarly. It isn't an easy business to break into, even if you ARE trained and good!

Tyra loves her some sisters and has always wanted the tall, skiny types (Fatima). I figure that those who did well (or did not totally fail) on the commercial might have a chance. Are they really going to show a commercial with the worst of the group?

While I think most of us prefer Anya, I expect Fatima to be given the crown. Maybe she will eventually be held accountable for completely missing a photo shoot. I agree that Dominique is improving in photo shoots, but all of the remaining models seem to have significant flaws for me.

I figured that Kat had no chance as she is too pretty and Tyra does not like pretty. I do agree that her eyes were never very lively, in retrospect. Hopefully, she can learn from that and do well.

I loved the gladiator challenge and Whitney easily looked the best in her armor. She could totally pull off Xena and I was glad to hear the other girls agreed.

I agree, the bottom 2 were obvious...who left was not! We have to remeber that Tyra did not know that who would be a fan favorite since this was filmed months ago while we were booing Saisha.
Though the fact that we actually saw Kat in confessional should have been a clue.
The camera work on the gladiator challange seemed spotty...I did not really feel that we saw them learning any thing..and the actual photos were less than modelesque. Did Fatima not realize she was in the final 5 and should know better by now!!!!!

Oh My Goodness!!! Seeing Paulina talk made me realize why they encouraged twiggy to have scheduling conflicts! Both Janice and Paulina were asked to show examples of modeling looks, while twiggy just told stories...did Twiggy ever show how to do a "look"?

It really annoyed me that Fatima was called first. I loved her face, though, when the girls were talking about "Anya was the only one Tyra loved." Too bad she was right in the end (about being called first.) I think it would do her well to be taken down a peg.

I loved Whitney in the beginning but she seems to have lost her way. It drives me crazy that she poses whenever they're standing as a group. I noticed it a couple of episodes back, when they had the media challenge. It happened last week, too, when they were at the design house. I don't know what's in her head but it's coming out in her work.

Good thing Dominique pulled it out during the photo shoot. Her perform in the challenge was bizarre. I get wanting to do something different and stand out, but completely ignoring the point isn't the way to do it.

Anya seems to be doing well. She did well last week and this week, too. I just can't see this girl as America's Next Top Model.

Come to think of it, I don't see Dom there, either. Which leaves Fatima (ugh!) and Whitney. If Whitney can break from her fakey, posey ways, she could actually take this thing.

*********** SPOILER ALERT***************

I'm SO looking forward to next week's episode. Dom has always had a big head but it sounds like her recent photoshoot success makes her unbearable. Now, that's entertainment!

Yeah! My girl Whitney has another chance to shine. I loved that she won the challenge (and looked awesome doing it!) and I did think that she deserved to not go home. Kat is also a beatiful girl, but not very lively. The eyes were dull, which was easier to see when you looked back at her portfolio.

Loved Dom's pictures this week that Tyrant took, even tho I can't stand her. I guess she's really trying hard. I do agree with the judges tho, that Dom won't get booked in real life based on the way she looks in person. I thought Anya looked awful this week, even tho she's got the model poses down pat.

I just hope that Whitney (with the obvious support of Nigel!) can, with a bit more practicing, rise to the top. She's SO pretty, and curvy, and commanding in person. She's been my fave since the beginning, and I'm glad she's come this far.

All in all a good episode last night. I still just can't stand Dom though. I mean, last night was a photo where I didn't cringe looking at it - but still, in person she is SOOO not a model. I think part of it is when she smiles - Her face isn't model pretty when she smiles - only if she's looking serious.

I went in to this episode hoping against all hope that Fatima or Dominique would go home. And then they were the top two call-outs. Gah!

It really does suck it was down to Kat and Whitney, although I predicted that Whitney was going to stay because Tyra has consistently been a fan of hers, and never even bothered to say Kat's name properly. Also, historically, the panel goes for the girls that could improve or have improved and have a personality already. Ah, well.

As for the final four... I'm still waiting on the erasure of Fatima and Dominique. I don't think we have to worry about Dominique. Every cycle there's a contestant who either looks like a man or looks too old (or both) and they never get past Final 3. (Think Jade from Cycle 6, Renee from Cycle 8.) It doesn't matter how good they are, it's usually Nigel who lobbies against the aged-looking.

Fatima... who knows. Maybe her big head will drag her down in the photoshoots next week.

Whitney could win if:
- she stops putting her hands on her hips
- she loses the Miss America shtick
- she stops sexing up the photoshoots

I think she can do it. If not, well, Anya for the win! She may not be the brightest star is the sky (to borrow Whitney's phrase) but at least she's a genuinely sweet person and has talent.

Wow, I'm a little shocked that Kat was sent home! But I can see the point that was made about her eyes not being very lively. So, now I'm pulling for Anya and Whitney. Dominique seems to want it more than anyone, but her personality just grates on me at times. I know a lot of it is editing, but still... On the other hand, when she's excited and happy, her eyes do light up and she takes on a whole different look. I don't know...I just can't see her winning, but there must be something that the judges see that we can't.

who was referring to the hispanic girl who works the most? it would be either jaslene or naima (my personal favorite).

on to this episode...i adore whitney. i think she stands an excellent chance of winning, and it's because she's never lost her confidence (or at least not for very long) and i think that tyra actually loves her and maybe sees some of herself in whitney (remember when she was talking about the whole "boobs and butt" thing on the photo shoot?) fatima is just too skinny. i find it hard to believe that after all of tyra's campaigning to have healthier looking girls that they would have fatima win. dominique will be out next week, and i think fatima will tank the covergirl photo shoot (or maybe the go-sees, i can't remember, have they done those yet?). my prediction? it'll be anya and whitney, and unfortunately, we'll have to endure "my life as a covergirl" with anya (can't understand what she says half the time!)
