Episode Recap: The Top 6 Revealed!
Ryan opens the show with a warning: Knowing what happened to Michael Johns last week, no one is safe anymore. Thanks, a--hole, we remember that you tortured Michael by telling him no one was kicked off last year during Idol Gives Back — and then you kicked him off! OK, I know it wasn't "you," Ryan, but still, did you have to do it in such a douche-y way?
The Idols sing Mariah Carey's hit, "One Sweet Day," starting off with Jason Castro. He gets a nice solo, but I feel like he's phoning it in. Kristy Lee is totally singing through her nose, but man, is she workin' her outfit. She will totally pull a Pickler and take the country world by storm. The rest of the Idols do a nice job, but I kind of think picking a song about "shining down on me from heaven," must be so hard for David Cook to sing (considering his brother is so sick). But, he's pro, and sings with all his heart.
(Side note: Is Syesha's hair getting taller with every show? Is David A.'s getting spikier?)
We're shown highlights from last night before we get to the first round of eliminations. What the hell is going on here? Ryan asks Jason to start a group on his left and then David Cook has to start a group to the right. Carly is asked to join Jason. Oh, come on! Do we really have to play these games? This is why I didn't watch the results shows last year. Now we're going to a commercial break, and Elliott Yamin will sing when we return.
They just showed the world's shortest Ford commercial to "You've Got to Break Free." On that note, Elliott followed with a song called, "Free." He looked good, sounded great and Paula was rockin' out in her Solid Gold red sequined number. Awww, I miss Elliott! He flashed something on his hand that read, "We miss you, Mom." I guess she just passed away? Dear god, he just said it's the first time he's been on stage without his mom watching. I'm immediately choked up. Damn you, Idol!
Syesha is asked to join Jason and Carly. Brooke is asked to join David and Kristy after she told Ryan that she put everything she had into "Hero" last night. Now, the only one left is poor David "I look like I'm gonna puke any second," Archuleta.
Now Ryan is taking calls from the viewers.... Do I really have to dignify this part with a summary? No.
Mariah saunters out from backstage and begins singing, "Bye, Bye." Her whole microphone and stand is covered in rhinestones. B-ling! Could her dress be tighter or shorter? I'd love to see her in jeans and a sweater to see what she looks like with clothes on (clearly, I'm not a dude). The song is really not that catchy and I don't think it shows off her talent. You can hear her track with vocals on in the background. She did the same thing on SNL, and I don't get it! Now she's trying to belt it out and it sounds like crap. It's kind of whiney and squeaky and I hear some major sound issues goin on. After she finishes and Ryan creepily ogles her, Mariah gives a shout out to her album that's "in stores today." Gross. I take back what I said last night about becoming her fan. That was silly and shameless self-promotion from someone who doesn't need it. Boo.
Now we're back to the eliminations. David A. walks out and is declared safe and then Syesha is asked to swap with David Cook. OMG!!! In the worst scumbag, a--hole move of all times, Ryan asks poor Archie to choose which side is safe! I'm about to throw very large breakables at my TV. Why must they do this? I gain new respect and admiration for Archie for sitting his behind down on the ground and refusing to choose. Good for you! Ryan has to bring David C., Carly, and Jason over to him as the "safe" bunch. They sit with him in a show of solidarity. These producers are disgusting. Boo!
Sorry about that rant, but that peeved you too, right? Our bottom three are all ladies: Syesha, Brooke and Kristy Lee. Whoa — Syesha is safe? Hmmm. Interesting. Kristy Lee is finally going home tonight, and Brooke starts sobbing. For her last song, Kristy Lee sat next to Simon on the judges table making him look extremely uncomfortable. I actually felt uncomfortable until she got back on stage. She did a great job with her last song considering how emotional she must have been. See you in Nashville, Kristy Lee.

I usually fast forward thru the results shows but I'm so glad I didn't tonight.
David C's single! Be still my heart...
Anywho, now that I've come across as a crazed stalker...Archie did the same thing that Melinda Doolittle did last season and sat down in the middle. I figure now that's what will happen every season. none of these contestants want to come off mean by actually picking..

I am so over Ryan and that "which group is safe" routine. Seriously... the competition is stressful enough without the added madness.
It was great to see Elliott. I adore him, and I feel so sad about his mother's passing. He is wonderful, and he will continue to make his mother proud.

I'm pretty sure they've been doing this pick your group thing since the second or third season. Bo Bice was the first one to sit down in the middle of the stage and refuse to choose. It's still one of the tackier ways to do the elimination.

Mariah Carey's performance....
Zzzzzzzzzzz
Is that the kind of crap that pushed her past Elvis (and is approaching the Beatles) in most #1 singles? We should all be ashamed.
I would have preferred to cut her and keep Kristy.

So i'm not sad or shook or anything by tonight's elimination. I'm not glad either, its weird, but each one of them have grown on me, even if I dont personally like everything they sing, I like them all. But it was definitely KLC's turn, she's had way more staying power than any of us prob had thought she would have after that beatles debacle. I found her sitting next to simon kinda funny, kinda creepy. And I think she took it all in good spirits, if she does go on to the country world I'm sure she'd do alright.
Yeah, Mimi's dress was uber tight and short, but thats predictable w/ her isn't it? And Ryan definitely was all into her, gross lol.
Um, I'm like so mad at my husband David C for denying me like that on national tv just for the votes!! Single??? Whatev!!
The "pick which group is safe" bit didn't bother me. They do that every season and it helps what is an otherwise boring process not be the same all the time. I wish though, for once, that somebody would just be a bitch and pick a group. Its not like it was any surprise who was safe...now that would have been interesting lol.
OH one more thing- Syesha's hair=AWFUL!!! I dont understand why she doesn't do it straight more, she looked absolutely stunning the few times she's had it straightened out.

They do that "pick the group" thing every year during the top 7, starting with season 4. I'm pretty sure this is the first time they've done a little switcheroo with it though... "Too many Cooks" haha... I knew it was gonna be Archie that had to choose. It cracked me up when David C sat down next to him, and then Jason, and then Carly was like, "You guys have to get up, I'm wearing a dress!"
I agree that it must've been hard for David C to sing "One Sweet Day" with his brother's condition. My grandfather recently passed away from cancer, and it was hard for me just to listen to it, even though I love that song. My heart really goes out to him for staying so strong, and still not mentioning anything to Ryan about it.
I totally choked up when I saw Elliot's hand... I remember them always showing his mom in the audience, and she was so proud.
I felt like David C was speaking directly to me when he said into the camera that he was single... He's only 6 years older than me, and a girl can dream right?
I was glad it was Kristy Lee and not Brooke... But I was really hoping it was Syesha. If she doesn't go home next week I will be very surprised.
Anybody know next week's theme?

To you who wrote: "OH one more thing- Syesha's hair=AWFUL!!! I dont understand why she doesn't do it straight more..." Have you ever heard of or seen NATURAL HAIR! that means in its natural state. Whereas white people usually have "naturally straight" hair, people of color have curly hair. I'm so sick of the comments about hair from all of you who will not let a black person be her/himself, including Jason with his dreadlocks. Does anyone remember Bob Marley? Her hair is not her talent, her voice is and I think she has an excellent one! So stop with the prejudice!

Can they pick songs from any Broadway show? Or does it have to be Andrew Lloyd Webber? Because I would die if David C would sing "One Song Glory" from Rent! My birthday is on saturday and that would be the best present EVER!

um roots...its not a black thing hun, i'm half black half puerto rican ( i presume syesha is a black/latino mix as well) I think she looks prettier w/ her hair straight-thats all. And that mohawk she was doing tonight was AWFUL. Its not that it was curly or natural, its that a mohawk style looked ugly IMO. And its also my opinion that she looks better w/ the hair straighter, it makes her look softer and prettier. Don't make it a race issue when its not. Oh, just an FYI, not all white people have naturally straight hair either-don't generalize or stereotype.

Sorry to see Kristy go. It should have been Brooke. I'm tired of her phony sweetness (IMO)plus the fact that she has no dynamic voice...she's really just fair like a c+ on a report card....OK I'll give her a B-. I told my girlfriend that Ryan would do a switch and indeed I was right. I wish we know that exact tally of votes for each contestant but doubt we'll ever see it. It would be interesting to see how close some performers are from each other. Why can't it be done? Are you listening big-shot producers?? I really felt bad when I heard about Elliot's mom...a tear instantly ran from my eye as I thought of my mom as well. When is it Neil Diamond week?

I dunno. I must be getting soft in my old age, but I actually got a kick out of the phone segment. Simon saying the first album he bought was Paula's "Straight Up" when he was ten years old cracked me right up. And Jason's face when the caller said "hi" from some girl he obviously didn't remember was killer.
Mariah's song was really weird for me -- I didn't understand about half the words she sang. Am I now at the hearing aid stage of life?
I didn't love Elliot's song, but I loved Elliot, as always. He looks fantastic and is such an obviously good soul. When he teared up at the mention of Mama Yamin I had to go for the kleenex. Just love that boy.
The group sing was blah, for me. I've been liking the commercials this season, but the makeup for the puppets creeped me out a bit.
Ah, yes, the "which side do you pick" game. They need another schtick here, methinks.
I thought Brooke or Carly would be gone tonight, since Kristy has been upping her game. Alas, not so.
Good luck, Kristy. Your sense of humor will hold you in good stead. (And you sing okay, too!)

Mariah's performance helps cement the idea that the Idoldome has really sucky sound. That said, Kristy Lee was way overdue. I hope Carly's next, but it'll probably be Brooke and Syesha before her. Overblown modern Broadway? That's right up Carly's one-note alley.
