Episode Recap: The Top 12 Perform
That was quite a night of ups and downs, including some pretty incredible performances and a few disasters (not to mention some unintentional comic relief courtesy of the judges). The two biggest stories of the night were the seeming self-destruction of hitherto nearly perfect David Archuleta (more on that in a bit) and the heightened crabbiness of Simon, who made disparaging comments not only about the singers but about several of the songs themselves (and these were Beatles songs, I mean, come on). Simon had a couple of especially cringe-inducing moments, including when he said, "What's the Irish girl's name?" and Paula and Randy replied quickly, "Carly! Carly!" Like a guy in the audience behind Simon, I put my head in my hands after that comment.
Ryan — who was, unless I'm mistaken, sporting a faux-hawk — talked up the new set, which was... you know, big and impressive, but not really all that. He also had a couple of choice moments with Simon, like when he was whispering sweet nothings in his ear until Simon pushed back his chair and said, "No, I would not!" Wonder what that comment could've been. Ryan also commented on Simon's unbuttoned shirt, to which Simon replied with his famous, "Ryan, this is inappropriate." At times, Simon looked like he was genuinely hurt by Ryan's little digs. The whole thing has been sort of not-really-but-kind-of-funny for the past few years, and I loved when Randy, appearing on the Today show recently, called the Simon-Ryan thing a "bromance."
Once again, I was shockingly onboard with Paula's very astute comments tonight. As my husband put it, "Paula's so lucid tonight."
On to the performances: Syesha Mercado, "Got to Get You into My Life": The Earth, Wind & Fire version of this song, performed with big smiles but not a whole lot of pizzazz, just didn't cut it tonight. It was basically good but quite boring. Syesha's in trouble for sure.
Chikezie, "She's a Woman": Hang on to your hats, kids, Chikezie's back! He's been barely scraping by the last couple of weeks, but he should last another week at least based on the strength of that performance. He seemed to really enjoy himself, and the feeling was mutual. I actually thought the beginning was the best part — I absolutely loved the bluegrass interpretation. Ryan needed to settle down, though — after Chikezie's positive reviews from the judges, he was doing chest bumps, putting his hands all over Chikezie's sweaty head and getting himself out of breath.
Ramiele Malubay, "In My Life": This sounded kind of cruise ship-y to me. She sang it so straight, but as Randy said, "It was kind of pretty, but it was also kind of pretty boring." Her dedication — which was basically to Danny Noriega, it seemed to me — was so earnest, I was a little embarrassed for her.
Jason Castro, "If I Fell": He's so sweet, and I don't know if it's a girl thing or what, but that was a nearly swoon-worthy performance. I think no one was more surprised than Paula at the fact that she disagreed with Randy, but she stood up for herself and said, "I feel your heart, and the audience feels your heart."
Carly Smithson, "Come Together": Tonight, Carly proved something to me. Amanda may be the rock-and-roll nurse, but Carly's got her own rock-goddess chops. Simon compared her to Kelly Clarkson, and I can see it: They both have powerful, pitch-perfect voices, and they're both eminently confident and strutting their stuff.
David Cook, "Eleanor Rigby": I've become a big David C. fan, and this happens to be one of my fave Beatles songs, but I thought the whole thing was sort of wishy-washy until he hit the chorus, at which point he really kicked it up. Simon thought it was "brilliant." I wouldn't go that far (not as good as last week's), but it definitely confirms that he's one to watch for.
Brooke White, "Let It Be": Somehow the sight of Brooke barefoot, playing the piano and tearing up as she sang a song that clearly means a lot to her sort of perfectly summed her up. It was sincere, and it was lovely. The only weird thing was that she kept looking for the camera. Her interaction with Ryan was odd, as he was grabbing her hand and she was pretty much pulling away. (Snd then there was the whole thing with her shoes, with Simon implying that Ryan wanted them for himself, which was just annoying.)
David Hernandez, "I Saw Her Standing There": Worst song choice of the night goes to David H. The original is so fun and upbeat, but it actually sort of sounded to me like this was his first time through it, like he was unsure of where he wanted to go with it. Simon called him a "rabbit in the headlights," and David H.'s days on the show are definitely numbered.
Amanda Overmyer, "You Can't Do That": When she said that this week was the first time she heard this song, my reaction was, "Oh, boy, not good." But I think the fact that she didn't know it meant that she was free to really make it her own, and she did. Unlike Simon, I thought this was her best performance to date. Paula was blown away, and truth be told, I was, too.
Michael Johns, "Across the Universe": One of my favorite songs, and Michael showed a really sweet side of himself tonight by being honest, simple and straightforward with it. Paula disagreed with Randy again, and praised Michael's "inner strength and inner confidence." It's such a beautiful song, and for the first time since his "Bohemian Rhapsody" during Hollywood week, I thought Michael's voice was as pretty as he is.
Kristy Lee Cook, "Eight Days a Week": I guess I respect that she tried something different with it, but what a mess. And for the record, I do like (good) country music, but this wasn't that. She actually seemed kind of disconnected from what she was singing. Paula didn't get it; Simon thought it was "horrendous... like Dolly Parton on helium."
David Archuleta, "We Can Work It Out": And, finally, we get to David A. Could it be that the heir apparent just completely lost it? There's no denying that he's got a bundle of talent, that he's charming and sweet and incredibly likable. And next week — and there will be a next week for him — he'll probably be back in his usual top-notch form. But what really surprised me was that he not only forgot his lyrics tonight (a big no-no, especially on such a well-known song) but he seemed utterly lost up there, like he just didn't know how to handle himself or Stevie Wonder's version of the song. Which is odd, since he's always been such a pro. "That was a mess," declared Simon. Hopefully for his sake — and for all his many fans out there — David A. will learn a lesson from this experience.
My prediction: Either Syesha, David H. or Ramiele are going home. Of course, none of them self-destructed quite like David A., but there's no way he's leaving (and he doesn't deserve to).

Poor David Archuleta. It's gotta be tough for him. The pressure he's under being dubbed the winner even before the contest really got underway...but I gotta give him credit. Simon last week told him to lighten it up, and he did so. Yes, he flubbed it, but he's got a big enough fan club to get him through to next week and I hope he comes back strong again.
The best performances for me were Brooke and David C. Everyone else was just ok or awful in my opinion.
We only agree on one for the bottom three. I'm thinking Syesha, Chikeze, and Amanda.

Nice recap! I'm getting really annoyed with the judges. Can't they let Simon talk? Randy gets to talk, Paula gets to talk, but let Simon say one thing and they automatically interrupt. He is a whiz, like him or not, and has some constructive things to say. It's irritating when he's in the middle of a thought and maybe-lucid-maybe-drunk Paula has to open her yap. Sorry, but this is starting to really ruin the experience for me.
As if my two cents matters, here goes: As for the contestants, spot on David Cook! Pack your bags Kristy Lee! (She thought she was Faith Hill when she did the Janis remake. UGGH on both counts!)Carly Smithson was awesome, but it bugs me that she's not "American". Should it? Anyone? Same thing with Michael Johns. Bugs me he ain't from around here.
Chikezie...you keep bringin' it like tonite. I wasn't impressed until tonite. Amanda was good again tonight. Maybe she's found her stride.
Can't stand David Hernadez. Didn't like him before the scandal, he just doesn't rock my socks. Ramiele is forgettable. So is Syesha. Brooke is only going to get so far with the same ole same ole before Simon starts to become critical of her. She's lovely and is a true artist, but IDK. Let's see that leaves Jason Castro and David Archuleta. Jason is a beautiful boy with a beautiful voice...let's see what else he can do besides a ballad. David Archuleta... again, not so much my taste. It drives me nuts to watch his terrible habit of licking his lips after every phrase. Somebody should really speak to the boy. He's got potential.

I am not done watching it yet...but I have noticed every week Brooke pulls away from Ryan..so glad you mentioned it, anyone know why? Maybe because her husband is always there and she is just not comfortable?

I'm finding myself not caring about this season; there isn't anybody who consistently makes me say, "Wow." Jason C. has given some nice performances, but he's too breathy; his last line was, "If I fell in love with Hugh," which is something that drives me nuts. David A. is also too breathy (and boy, did he implode tonight? Good thing for him that one bad performance won't get him booted--he'll probably get even more votes.)
David Cook is growing on me, but I'm still not completely sold. I liked Kristy Lee's countrification of Journey last week, but this week's attempt fell far short. Michael Johns was better, but not as good as he was during Hollywood Week.
I haven't written off the season yet, but I'm also not terribly enthused. I'm waiting for AI Rewind of Seasons 3 and 4 (and 5, for Elliot.)

Lennon/McCartney - how can you go wrong you say? Obviously it was pretty easy for some. I must say it was nice to not have to hear all the same recycled songs we’ve been listening to year after year. Maybe since they have the Lennon/McCartney song book they will be able to get more songs in the future.
Syesha - She sang “just” okay.
Chikezie - What a pleasant surprise! Fun, energetic - I’m so glad he stayed over Danny. Loved the little “bayou” feel he incorporated into the song. If the whole performance had been that way it would have been too much...it was just enough to keep the integrety of the song.
Ramiele - Very pretty song. She sung it well, but it was as dull as dishwater.
Jason C. - In his interview I loved how he was so excited to sing “If I Feel.” I love those “warbly” high notes he does. Kinda reminds me a little of Roy Orbison. Simon and Randy were so wrong! He’s doing what he knows he can do, and doing it well.
Carly - Her best performance to date, however, I’m still waiting to connect with her. The combination of voice and personality is what I’m looking for and all I get from her is voice. She seems like a perfectly nice person, but there’s just something missing......she is a great singer though!
David C. - Eleanor Rigby - like Nina, this is my very favorite beatles song, sung by my my top pick this year *big smile on my face* Best performance of the night. I am so glad he knows this competition is won or lost week-to-week. I think this is the year a rocker finally wins!!!
Brooke - This was the best song choice for her. I don’t think she was as good as Simon said, and when he goes back to listen to it on TV he’ll see she had a few off key notes, but overall Brooke is the whole package, beauty, good voice, charm, humility, piano/guitar skills, and the ability to pick the right song week after week. In this cynical world I love how grateful, sweet and genuinely happy she is. It’s infectious!
David H - This was his weakest performance to date. He may not be safe this week.
Amanda 0. - Fun song. She sang her version well. Solid middle of the pack performance. (Hate those blonde hair extensions!)
Michael J. - This is the first time I really liked this guy. I connected with him tonight. Unfortunately he does look like he’s trying to pass a kidney stone when he sings though.......
KLC - Aghhhhh! Just awful! Hated the arrangement. The snare drum was extremely off-putting. I don’t know how well she sang as I was musically confused as h*ll! Country, seriously? She should have done like Chekieze, just a little nod to country would have gone a long way. Guess who’s going home?
David A - So wrong! I have a big ? over my head about that song choice. The problem with David is he’s just not a “fun song” kinda guy. He looked so uncomfortable out there, and to forget the words? - the cardinal sin! All that gets you is a reprimand from Simon, and understandably so. Hope he can come back next week. Going home: KLC, Ramiele, Syesha or David H.
Top four: David C, Jason C, Brooke and Michael J.

I'm with you LoudWhisper... I am a little bothered by the fact that Carly and Michael aren't American. Not to say that they aren't great singers, because they are, but I think that if the name of the show is "American Idol" then you best bring on the actual Americans. I'm just sayin'.

Yo Nina!! What is so terrific about Jason's voice?? I am in a band playing trombone for over 15 years with terrific vocalist and they have voices with power, tone, dynamics, and emotion, and range. This cute kid should be singing in a small club in the village not on a gigantic stage. His whispering notes can't compare with the other guys. He really isn't that good of an entertainer that stands out among the rest. Now Clay Aiken had that special quality and sound....where is Jason's energy. I realize he is connecting to people on a certain level but I need to hear the sound that will impress me and then I can say "wow"! Daniel Cook really cooked and Chikeazy was very strong. Very sorry about David A but stuff happens and we aren't machines. He should have been better prepared. The country girl's song was disjointed and was out of sync with the arrangement which didn't feel right from the very beginning. Michael is very likable and talented so he should go on. Amanda and Carly should make a single together since they have very strong voices with the right sound. Jason can't touch their styles or quality. Maybe he can go on one more week but I rather Chikezy stay. No whispering for him.

Paula was lucid, coherent, and made some good comments. She also was rude to Simon who was right to tell her to shut up, but should have been more polite. Isn't he British? Ryan vs Simon is getting old.
Syesha was worse than the judges thought and could be in trouble. Especially since she went first and was so forgettable.
Chikezie gave his best performance ever. Best of the night.
Ramiele was very boring. She can sing and has fans so she won't go home, but she needs to sing bigger songs.
Jason wasn't as good as last week. Last week he gave me chills it was so good. This week was just ok, but I liked him more than the judges.
Carly hurt my ears. I know I give her crap, but I give her props when she earns it. Her voice was very shrill and shrieky. She shouldn't sing those types of songs. Does she have photos of the judges with naked children? They waaay over hype her. Comparing her to Kelly was a joke. Kelly never made me cover my ears, and Carly's done it twice now. Yikes!
David C was not as good as last week, but pretty darn good.
Brooke was not as good as the past 2 weeks, but probably second best of the night. She has something with her innocence and singing style.
David H was bad. He should have sang Day Tripper, but changed the words to Gay Stripper. He's not long for the show.
Amanda was ok. Not as good as last week, but she did pretty well.
Michael showed again what a good voice he has. Yes, a little boring, but that's the song. he should have sand something else, but I thought he was better than the judges gave him credit for.
KLC was terrible. I think maybe the judges have decided she needs to go. I don't think I've ever seen Paula struggle to say anything good. Or anything at all. Clearly in the bottom 3.
David A forgot the lyrics and stunk like week old Limbuger cheese wrapped in week old fish. If it wasn't for his Top 24 performances, and some of the bottom 3 tonight, he'd be in the bottom 3. I can't recall any of the past winners ever forgetting the lyrics. Bad omen for him. He just went from "Melinda" to "Lakisha" in that he was the favorite in the Top 24, but fell down...hard.
Top 2: Chikezie, Brooke
Bottom 3: KLC, Syesha and David H. Any of them could go. KLC for being the worst of the night, Syesha for being first and forgettable, or David H for his stripper past having cost him too many voters.

I agree with you LoudWhisper. They have got to stop interrupting Simon. He deserves to speak just as much as the other judges even if they don't want to hear it. Frankly I think that he has the best comments. Paula got mad at him for telling her to shut up, but she is so disrespectful of him by always interrupting him. I guess it just makes me mad because rudeness is my biggest pet peeve and Simon is my favorite judge. He did seem to be really mad at all of Ryan's digs. It was kind of disturbing and uncomfortable.
Anyways, on to the contestants. Syesha was ho-hum as she is every week, which is really sad because she has an amazing voice. Chikezie was great this week and I totally loved the beginning of that song. Ramiele...ick! I am so sick of people thinking this girl is great. Yes she has a nice voice, but she is just not powerful enough. I would really like to see her go, but I think it's going to be someone else...like Kristy. I want to like the girl, but she keeps messing up. Tonight was terrible for her. I know she's trying to find herself as a singer, but her vocals didn't match up with how fast the band was playing. I think it might be the end for her. Jason, David C., and Michael were all really solid. Amanda was pretty good, and David H. was disappointing. Brooke and Carly were easily my favorites for the night. And David A. What happened??? "We Can Work it Out" is one of my all time favorites, and Randy's right, no one can sing it like Stevie. The judges should have never told him to do more upbeat songs, because he was soooo much better before. And forgetting the lyrics? I think he was just so uncomfortable singing that song that he was not himself. Hopefully he will survive. Overall I really liked tonight's performances. I think Kristy will be going home, but for my sake I hope it's Ramiele

Count in on the "Let Simon Speak" committee. That's it - I'm getting tickets and making a sign. If you agree, do the same.
Tonight was, IMO, the night of the dark horses. Brooke, Amanda, and Jason were my favorites. They all have a style and now seem to have settled into their respective grooves. The kicker is that I honestly hope none of them win. They're all much better than the AI machine deserves. The judges and the producers still clearly want a cookie-cutter pop star and none of them are that, to their credit. Sidenote: who knew Chikezie would come up out of the swamp and drop the faux Luther act? I actually liked the whole down-home intro better than the rest of the song, but pretty good!
Still SO bored with Michael (his pronunciation was particularly embarassing and he's still shouting). Carly is so Celine - meaning, she's technically proficient but soulless. (Kelly Clarkson should sue for any inferred similarities.) Jason Cook's act isn't working for me. Most of his performances are actually due to arrangement and not his voice or singing skills, which are both lacking. David H. is a week or two away from the end. He is SO out of his league. As for David A. - I'm sure he'll be fine. I once saw no less than Paul McCartney screw up the words to "We Can Work It Out." He just better make up ground quickly next week. Can't afford another stinker.
Going home? The utterly awful Syesha or equally bad Kristy. Based on last week's results, I'd guess Kristy. But leading a show with a weak performance? That could cost ya. In any event, neither's long for this world.

I'm on the 'Let everyone speak' committee, because everyone interrupts everyone on this show, and it's way past being old.
Wow! What a surprising night. Chikezie killed it, and David A. just died. Never would have predicted it.
Syesha - Forgettable and in danger.
Chikezie - Unbelievable. I had NO IDEA he could be that good. He was a nonentity in my eyes until today.
Ramiele - She evidently has no idea how to pick the right songs for her voice, and she may be in trouble too.
Jason C. - I'm sorry, but I wasn't impressed tonight. Too many times it seemed he ran out of breath.
Carly - Impressive. Had no idea she could rock it.
David C. - He's my favorite. Not as good as last week but still good.
Brooke - Very brave and very good. She's really genuine.
David H. - Over-the-top bad. In danger as well.
Amanda - Her best performance to date--I'll give her that, but still just okay with me. And she needs a hairstylist quick!
Michael - Yawn. He just doesn't do it for me despite his good looks.
Kristy - Bad song choice to countrify. So many other better ones. Such a shame.
David A. - Self-destruction, and I blame Simon. I agree with ponks19. Simon should have NEVER picked a winner so soon. I just hate that!!!! It puts so much pressure on the person. And has it EVER helped a singer? Really, Simon, get a clue!
Going home: Toss-up between Syesha, Ramiele, KLC and David H.

Darclyte- whoo! LOL!
poor Kristy Lee Cook should try less Hee-Haw, more Reba. it was just awful.
and Ramiele could only get my attention at this point if she set herself on fire during her performance. like, real fire. she's lame.
David Cook was my favorite 2 weeks in a row now. he just needs to cut that hair and I'll actually vote for him.
speaking of hair... there were some new extensions making their stage debut tonight and they weren't good. I'm talking about you Carly. and I love Amanda but the now extended Elvira/Cruella de Ville/bad Terri Nunn look has got to go. talk about taking my breath away. and where'd she get those pants? clown school?

Hi all. I just finished reading all the comments so far and all I can think is "We're all over the place tonight!" I've got lots to say, but TRY to keep it shorter than longer.
I like the new set, with the band up top. Not too much of a change from last year, but when you look back to seasons 1 and 2, it's quite the transformation.
Yes, the judges are being snarky with each other (and Ryan), but they always have been. Simon has been very rude to Paula in the past, so I don't have a problem with her giving him a little of his own medicine. Mostly, I just laugh at ALL their juvenile behavior.
On to the singers:
SYESHA - She has a nice voice, but does anyone else think she has a better chance of having a career doing commercial jingles than she does of being a recording artist? Just my gut reaction. She's generic.
CHIKEZIE - A REVELATION!!! I have not been a fan, but I LOVED him tonight. I've always thought that it's the big stage that either makes or breaks the performer. He proved that he deserves to be there.
RAMIELE - Boring. She has done the same type of ballad every week. Either she starts to change it up and show us she can perform more than one type of song, or she needs to go home. Generic.
JASON - I love Jason. He's such a sweetheart and I agree with Paula that we connect with him because we "feel" him singing. However, I honestly think he could use a few singing lessons. Just to help him breath a little better so he can hit all the notes he's aiming for because sometimes I think he's running out of air too soon. I do believe there's something special and very marketable about him. He just needs some polishing. I'll be happy to see him stay around.
CARLY - FINALLY! She picked a great song and performed it very well. However, I don't think she's as good as Kelly Clarkson. I just think Kelly's voice is unique. When I hear Kelly, I know right away it's her singing. Carly can sound undistiguishable from others. Still, I'm happy to see her having a great night.
DAVID COOK - I'm totally lovin' this guy!!! Going into the top 24, I didn't even give him a thought. But week after week he's made me stop and pay attention. I can't believe Simon actually told him he didn't have very much charisma. He IS my favorite right now and I think he's good enough to be a radio success tomorrow. Love, love, love him! Out of everyone, he is the only person to consistently pick the right song to perform week after week. Not only is he a great singer (his voice is strong and clear), I think he's a shrewd player when it comes to this game we call Idol.
BROOKE - She doesn't have the strongest voice but it has a unique sound compared to the others. She also knows who she is and how to present herself. Great song choice and I loved that she connected with her "moment" on stage and teared up. Winning personality.
DAVID H - I don't have anything against this David, but I think he's not long for this show. He showed tonight that he doesn't have the charisma to be up on that stage. And, truthfully, charisma is as much a part of success in the music industry as actual talent. Which he does have, but not enough of to overcome his lack of stage presence in the big studio.
AMANDA - Loved her tonight! Since I was as unfamiliar with the song as she was, it allowed me to simply focus on her performance without doing any comparisons in the back of my head. I thought she nailed it. That song could be on her album and I'd listen to it over and over. And, disagreeing with others here, I LOVED the way she looked tonight. I wish I looked as good in a pair of tight pants!
MICHAEL - You know what? I actually preferred him tonight to any other performance and I've figured out why. When he sings upbeat songs, he moves about the stage in ways that remind me of Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence. When he stands still and sings, I simply see (and hear) "Michael." He moved me with his performance tonight. Good job.
KRISTY LEE - Going home. I DO like her singing country better than the other genres, but I don't think she has "it" in the least. Although I said to my husband tonight that her face reminds me of a young Ann-Margaret. (Seriously.) I don't think it was fair of the judges to bash her so badly for doing country when they told her to do it, but it WAS a lacking performance. No wow factor.
DAVID A - I was both said and happy to see him fumble. Sad because I don't like to see anyone embarassed. But happy because it just showed everyone that he's human like the rest of us. It also reminded us that he IS very young, and that no matter how good a singer he is, he still need to get at least a little life experience under his belt to infuse into his performances so he can be truly great.
I would be shocked if Kristy wasn't sent packing tomorrow. But stranger things have been known to happen in the world of Idol, so I'm excited to see the results.
Also, I'm happy that Katharine McPhee is going to perform with David Foster. He's the producer who discovered and nurtured Josh Groban, and I think he's exactly the type of person she should have been working with on her first album. To emphasize her talent, just think about how much better the song would have been tonight if Katharine had sung "All My Life" rather than Ramiele. Yup. She'd have knocked it out of the park.
Thanks for reading my comments!

Well I'm surprised that tonight was actually a good one. I thought it was going to be a disaster.
I thought Carly, Brooke, David C, Chikeze were very good. I really liked Chikeze beginning of the song.
Michael, Syeesha, Amanda, and Jason were meh to me. When Jason was talking about his background or whatever that was I thought he was going to do Yesterday. Oh well. And as for David A. he was way off the mark. Was it me or did he mumble though the beginning of the song?
Ramiele, David H., Kristy Lee, were very boring to me. I thought Ramiele was breathy in her song.
I agree about letting Simon finish speaking. Its getting old and boring. The same with the "bromance" with Ryan. Stop it Please
As for Paula being coherent tonight how long will do you think that will last?
I think its going to be Syeesha who is going home.
Finally, while I was watching AI tonight, I was wondering why Sir Paul wasn't mentoring them for this week? Do you think he is going to be on later on in the season or what?
