Grey's Anatomy Preview: Breakups and Hookups!

Getting her own time in the spotlight at the Writers Guild Foundation's "Anatomy of a Script" series was guest speaker Shonda Rhimes, creator of ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Prior to taking the stage Tuesday at the Writers Guild of America in Los Angeles, Rhimes gave TV Guide a peek at what's coming up in the final six episodes of this season's Grey's.

According to Rhimes, between split-ups and hookups, the Seattle Grace staff will be riding an emotional roller-coaster. "George and Izzy broke up, and I think they're struggling with what that's going to mean for them in terms of their friendship and where they stand now," says Rhimes. There's drama in store as well for George's jilted ex. "What's going to happen for Callie is really good, really interesting, fairly juicy and I can't tell you a bit of it," teases Rhimes.

One thing fans won't be seeing is Callie linking romantically with the Chief, who still holds a candle for his wife. "People always seem to move on and then they come back," says Rhimes. "We're going to be seeing more of Loretta Devine, definitely."

Cristina will continue to feel the impact of her breakup with Burke. "The last six episodes are going to be her dealing with that loss and what it means for her career," says Rhimes. As for Cristina finding love down the road, Rhimes hints, "I think she's pretty lovable, so in the future, yes."

Also shaking things up will be Addison's return visit to Seattle Grace. "She's going to come in in our [May 1] episode and do some stuff that only Addison can do," says Rhimes. In doing so, Addison's angst is triggered when she learns you can never go home again. "I think we watch her struggle with the difference between who she is in L.A. and who she was in Seattle." Will that struggle land her in the janitor's closet locking lips with McSteamy? Rhimes' allusion to Mark's storyline may be telling: "McSteamy is going to be dealing with that aspect of, 'Is all I am this guy who sleeps around?'"

As for the dynamic duo of Meredith and Derek, Rhimes has already announced that the couple will reunite. That said, don't expect smooth sailing for the relationship. "I think they're going to be happy, but I don't think there's any 'happily ever after,'" says Rhimes. "If Meredith and Derek walked off into the sunset, then that would be it. The show would be over." – Bekah Wright

Plea to Ms. Rimes.

Dear Ms. Rimes,
While I understand that you need to create drama for Mer and Der, your quote:

"I think they're going to be happy, but I don't think there's any 'happily ever after,'" says Rhimes. "If Meredith and Derek walked off into the sunset, then that would be it. The show would be over."

disturbs me a little.

I stuck with the show and TIVO'd my beloved Scrubs even after that awful half of season 3 (ferryboat and post-ferryboat - ick).

For the love of blog, please do not turn Mer and Der's reunion into the last half of season 3 again!!! Seriously PLEASE no more back and fourth.

Thank you.

Grey's Fan,

As a giant fan of this show, I became very disappointed in it in the last 18 months. The only good thing I could see happening was that Meredith and Derek would split up. I may be in a small minority here, but I don't care to see them together again.....ever.

Sadly, I can't even say at this point if I plan to watch the show when it returns.

You know what, Pinkie? I'm with you.

I'm not excited about the show coming back - not like I once was. They've turned a compelling, fun medical drama into just another soap opera set in a hospital.

Somehow, we're supposed to believe that all the stuff that happened in the first 3 seasons (deaths, pregnancies, tragedies, marriages, accidents, rebounds, etc.) occurred within the course of just one year. (internship year) It got ridiculous after awhile. (Don't even get me started on how fast Izzy suddenly got over Denny and started in with George. HUGE mistake on the writers' part.)

That being said, I think the writers need to come to grips with the fact that there is nothing wrong with at least one couple - no matter which one - getting a happy ending. Does it make for interesting drama to see a married couple succeeding at marriage, career and family? Maybe not, but things like that do actually happen in the real world from time to time. :)

Can we get back to the interesting medical story lines that parallel what's going on with our interns/residents, please?

Oh, and Mer/Der? Who cares. (Just PLEASE do not hook up Hahn with Sloan. She's nasty.)

Shonda did not say that Meredith and Derek wouldn't be happy together - she just said that she doesn't believe in the stereotypical "happily ever after" - which I take to mean the Disney-style prince and princess ride off into the sunset. I am excited about the fact that Meredith and Derek will be back together and working on their relationship in a realistic way. That's what I take Shonda's comment to mean. I think that Patrick and Ellen definitely have the chemistry to pull something like this off. Can't wait for April 24!

"McSteamy is going to be dealing with that aspect of, 'Is all I am this guy who sleeps around?'"

Thank goodness, I'm looking forward to seeing McSteamy turn into a fully fleshed out character.

Having been away from Grey's and PP for this long, I've found myself not caring if PP never comes back, but I do really miss me some Grey's.

And I agree, chloe123. Shonda even DOES say they're going to be happy. But being happy doesn't mean you're perfect, and that you stop dealing with your issues.

My comments about the "happily ever after" scenario weren't necessarily about Derek and Meredith. Yes, Shonda said they'd get their happy ending; but it seems like none of the couples on this show have gotten a happy ending, or even a friendly one. Every one is breaking up and cheating or whatever. Bailey started out to be a good example of a married couple with a family and now they've added her to the list of "woe-is-me's."

I'm not saying you have to have a perfect life to have a happy ending, but it would be nice for at least one couple to have a nice, stable relationship on the show.

Oh, and Derek was perfectly within his rights to date Rose - (who I like) because Meredith told him she wasn't ready. He also deserves to have someone who's ready to commit. He's been more than patient and given her lots of chances. (Anyone remember Finn?)

Anyway, enough of that. I just want them to get back to the first and second season-type shows. Those were the ones that were really compelling and great. Now, they're getting to be too fantastical and each disaster is the next "can't miss/must see" episode. Been there. Done that. It was called "ER."

1st-I am with y'all! How did Izzy get over Denny that fast and I think the whole love affair with Izzy and George was terrible writing!
2nd- Occasionally, 2 people do live happily ever after. Sure life will give them ups and downs but Love is not that hard and the Meredith/Derek story line is getting ridiculous!
3rd- I work in a hospital and YES people do have lives outside of the hospital (or in) and they can be just as crazy as in Grey's Anatomy. I like the show because it is realistic!

I am so looking forward to Greys return. I hope it doesn't take long for Mer/Der to get back together. Their make-ups are always soo hot. I also think Der was more than patient with Mer. She did tell him she wasn't ready, so when he kissed Rose I didn't blame him. Mer/Der together yah! I also like Alex with Mer's sister (forgot her name). I hope they do not go in the direction of Christina and Hahn. Not every show has to have a gay couple. Just like I think it wouldn't hurt for there to be one happy couple.

In the past 2 months I watched all 3 Seasons of GA. I have to agree that I really like Season 1 and 2 and thought Season 3 was poor writing. I was trying my best not to get hooked on another TV show but -oh well. HAHA

Yes Izzy got over Denny real quick and what happened to Izzy's daughter? She had the bone marrow testing done and saw her daughter through the window and that was it? End of story? (Did I fall asleep?) Can anyone shed light on this topic?

I really like Mer and Der together but I agree the writing is starting to become unrealistic.

GA is boring with Mer and Der broking up. They are meant to be together. Period!!
And Christine is such a nasty character, does she do anything besides sneer? I don't think she should be with anybody. Who would want her?
Can't wait for the show to start and bring on McSteamy.

vjw1218 - I am with you about Hahn - she's nasty and I don't want to see her hook up with ANYBODY...I would not be sad to see her character just quietly fade away.

But seriously - I am excited to have Grey's back next week. I am a diehard fan and can accept the uneven writing that has sometimes plagued the show because I see an improvement and hope/think the trend will continue.

It will be good to see Addison back, albeit briefly. She definitely needs scenes with Derek, Meredith Mark and the Chief, and I hope that she gets a chance to interact with Callie - they'd struck up a nice friendship and it would be nice to revisit that. She pretty much gave Alex permission to go for Ava and is over what was pretty much just a crush, so since she'll only be on the one episode, I hope they utilize her time with the most pertinent characters in her life.

While I'm glad to hear that Meredith and Derek will reunite and be happy (though not ALL the time), I still think he was an a-s-s to immediately jump into dating Rose. The first kiss was more of an impulse thing but taking her out on a date after Meredith told him she didn't want either of them to see other people - that is deliberate. If he loves her, he would not do that.

And I can't wait to see the stuff coming up with my favorite of all - Cristina. You know she's still gotta be sitting on some feelings for and about Burke and how they ended, so I hope she gets some great scene-chewing stuff!!

I'd love it if Callie's something interesting was related to Mark's epiphany about being more than a manwhore. They're pretty hot together and I like their banter.

And why are there absolutely no Alex spoilers? None. I love Alex and think he has the most interesting story to tell and he continuously gets the shaft - and Ava.

I'm over Mer-Der so I don't care much where their relationship goes.

they put merder together NOW? now when I hate hate hate him and want her with ANYONE else? i'd take George even

Oh, and Derek was perfectly within his rights to date Rose - (who I like) because Meredith told him she wasn't ready. He also deserves to have someone who's ready to commit. He's been more than patient and given her lots of chances. (Anyone remember Finn?)

i remember him saying he loved her wanted her to make a choice then dumping her in a hospital bed.
so whatever Derek is a douchebag!! Tells Meri she's his love of his life wants to marry her but is freaking making out with the plant then dating her. i hope Meri tells his cheating a** off.
