February 12, 2007: Day 6: 1 pm — 2 pm, 2 pm — 3 pm

Remember Darren McCarthy and Rita? Yeah, me neither. And therein lies the cruel truth about these two-hour events: If you're attention span-challenged like me, odds are you've forgotten all the totally kick-ass stuff that went down in the first 15 minutes. So, to recap on tonight's shock-value parade: Rita iced her boyfriend McCarthy for a shot at keeping that seven million dollars all to herself; karma came around rather quickly for her at the hands of Abu Fayed; Fayed's a regular Bob Vila with a power drill; thanks to the drill bit (my apologies), Morris caved and helped Fayed arm Suitcase Nuke 2 (of five); Chloe has very little tolerance for self-pity, but handles an automatic weapon better than she does a bitch-slap; Weasel No. 2 has friends in high places and a plan to "remove" President Palmer; Tom Lennox is on board with said plan — if this man loves his country, I'd hate to see the way he treats Korea; Kim 2.0 is in his grandfather's care, which means he's got all of 40 minutes to live; Milo ought to get part-time work as a driver for UPS; and Jack Bauer tried to tell you people he didn't think he could do this job. Thankfully, he's still dead wrong.

Along the way, we also enjoyed a couple of cool car chases, some gnarly explosions, and Jack's down-to-the-wire disarming of a live nuclear bomb. (I hadn't been that anxious since the first time I tried to surgically remove Cavity Sam's wishbone.) But for me, the highlights came during Jack's quieter moments: his first return to CTU after 20 months in captivity; facing his father's stern "you killed your brother, no dessert for a month" look of disapproval; confessing to Bill that he lost control while interrogating Graem; and even his matter-of-fact call for EMT as the night's final seconds ticked away — "Well, I've lost another tactical team… you guys are insured, right?" It's full speed ahead when you're saving the world. I will say that I felt a small twinge of disappointment at Jack and Chloe's awkward reunion. Dude, I know you're a manly man with a complicated past, but spare the poor girl a hug. You spent your entire lunch hour threatening to spoon your brother to death… and all Chloe gets is an emotionally pregnant arm rub?

Meanwhile, there's delicious treachery afoot in the bunker below the White House — turns out Reed Pollack is a weasel of the first degree. I'm not sure who this "Carson" is he's working with/for, but the bottom line is that suddenly he's the one pulling Lennox's strings and not the other way around. I just can't wait to find out if Reed's planning to do the dirty work himself (exactly how are we defining "conduit" in this instance?), or if he'll be bringing in some equally slimy backup. And not to belabor the point, but you know who is outstanding at protecting the President in the face of extreme danger? Secret Service Agent extraordinaire, Aaron Pierce. Can we fly in the last great American hero from his summer home in Boca and get him back on the job, please? The fate of our nation depends on it.

And here's my oddball Internet discovery of the night: I was trying to find the name of that TV-movie starring Missy Crider (who played the now-dead Rita) as a coma patient turned nymphomaniac (turns out it was called Sins of the Mind), and discovered that she's married to none other than Danny Kastner — the "guitar guy" from Season 3 of The Apprentice. Seriously? That guy?

The following is only for 1pm-2pm

I'm not sure who I feel more sorry for: Jack or Morris. Morris thinks he will be responsible for killing thousands of people. Jack thinks he killed his brother. Lots of guilt going around in this episode. In the scene where Chloe is trying to let Morris know it wasn't his fault he was forced to arm the nukes - I cold just feel the guilt coming off Morris. Now, I'm a little surprised Morris wasn't able to program something into the that activation code that could help CTU find Fayed. This guy is supposed to be brilliant, right?
As for Graem's death, I figure there will be a full toxicology on Graem that will show he had more of the drug in his system than was administered during his interrogation. So hopefully Jack won't have to feel responsible for his brother's death too much longer. Papa Bauer is turning out to be even worse than his son (I didn't think that would be possible.)
I was surprised about Tom. For a while there, I thought he really wasn't that bad of a guy after all. Just some one who really believed he was doing wat was best for his country and was willing to resign when he felt his veiws no longer had any weight with the president. But then Chad Lowe brought him over to the dark side. So Tom is once again the weasel we love to hate.
Oh yes, and Kim-look-a-like. I knew she was toast the minute she walked into that apartment. Couldn't have happened to a nicer girl.

Chana, I actually liked the way the reunion between Chloe and Jack went especially after Jack said, "Glad to have you back, Chloe," in an earlier phone scene after Ms. O'Brien had messed up on her duties previously because of her feelings for Morris. And can I say I was definetely on edge when that drill went through Mr. O'Brien!

Please, do not give me two back to back episodes again. I couldn't focus after about 80 minutes or so.

I was disappointed in Morris giving up so easily and not either throwing the device out the window or committing suicide or something.

BTW, I'm new to 24 this year and so many bloggers said weeks ago Morris would be the guy Fayed would get to program the detonaters - why Morriss? Is it something from last year?

I too, was disappointed at how fast Morris gave in to Fayed. Oh well, everyone can't be as unbreakable as Jack, although I think he may come close to breaking next week.

The torture scene with Morris and Fayed reminded me of the torture scene in Scarface, as far as the way it was shot. You saw the blood and the agony on Morris' face and heard the drill but that was about it. I love those shots.

I hope Palmer listens to Assad in regards to his people may be coming after him.

I was very impressed with Milo taking charge last night, after he realized Jack may be down.

Can't wait for next week's episode. Hopefully Jack's father will get the smack down that is owed to him.

Okay, Chana, this is a serious show and your review had me laughing with tears. Let's get somber, okay?

I'm with Shrikantj, I was so keyed up after two hours of Jack that I couldn't sleep and I had to get up at 3:30 for work!

(Btw, for any Bones fans reading this, did you not hear "tic tock team" in your head every time you heard Tac Team?)

And, puleaze, let's cut Morris some slack. Who didn't wince and gasp when Fayed started drilling Morris's shoulder after beating him senseless with a baseball bat and drowning him in a tub? I'm surprised Morris isn't off drooling in a corner some where.

It's ridiculous to say that Morris gave in to Fayed too easily or too soon. Do any of you think you could hold up longer with a guy drilling a hole into your shoulder? I had to turn the channel for a moment during that scene. I don't mind seeing Jack torture a bad guy, but seeing Morris go through that was just too much.
I was hoping he was going to provide a bit more comic relief this season, with his supreme self-confidence and suggestive comments to Chloe. But I guess he has some recovery time to endure first (I must say that his recouperative powers are nearly on the par with Jack's--getting tortured as he was and returning to his station within 2 hours deserves a round of applause).

And I love that Chloe! Her tough-love bedside manner with Morris was typical of her. And as for Jack's big thank-you and his failure to give her a hug, well, she probably would have stood there a bit frozen with her arms at her side if he had tried such a quick embrace.

Looks like some of us were wrong about Milo (including me). I was guessing he'd turn out to be some creepy mole at CTU, but he held his own during that chase and subsequent gunfight/explosion sequence.

I, for one, am glad they wrapped up the whole Morris thing so quickly. I saw that dragging on for a few episodes.

I don't think it's ridiculous to say that Morris gave in too quick. It seems as though CTU would have some sort of training for it's employees(regardless of rank) just in case... situations like this pop up.
Feb 13, 2007 8:41 AM
Just how many Tac Teams does CTU have, anyway? It seems like about 10 of them have gotten killed already, at least 3 in the nuclear blast. I understand that they would have several different teams ready to go, but not an unlimited number.

And Kim 2.0? Yes! I love that name. I always hated Kim and her never-ending series of captures, escapes, and re-captures (my fave was the cougar in season 2). Too bad you didn't talk to your cousin, Josh!

And when are people going to figure out that no matter what anyone tells you about keeping quiet, always tell Jack what's going on! He's the only one that can help you.

I finally figured out what I liked about Morris: his voice. He's really got lovely pipes. I know that doesn't mean much, but there it is.

That said, it was nice to see flashes of the old Chloe in there somewhere. I don't like newer, softer Chloe nearly as much. I could see her striking Morris once to get his attention, but not a second time. And when Milo and Buchanan thought she was too emotional to handle her job? I was yelling at the TV - this is Chloe, people! She never gets too emotional to do her job!

Random aside: does anybody else hear themselves following the standard "The following takes place between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m." with the words "on the day of the California presidential primary"?? Even five seasons later? I do it every episode.

I feel sorry for Morris too. And I feel bad for Jack. Philip was horrid last week, but I was glad when he killed Graeme. Now we have him hording over Josh and we know that won't go well. Lets hope Josh is more like his uncle than his father. (Or more like his father than his uncle if you believe what I think) Anyway Philip is creepy and Morris is sad and Chloe is great but Milo having the clear thinking to grab a gun and some grenades to set off...well I don't think I could have done that with a screaming Marilyn next to me. so yea Milo! I do love this show. Powers Booth kinda scares me. As a Deadwood fan I keep expecting him to say, "Mister President have you met my wife MIss Joanie Stubbs?" in that leer of his.

I also was pleasantly surprised when Milo actually made the smart decision to run, even before the bad guys were officially after them. I definitely thought that he was going to be another 24 causality!

Also, words you never want to hear from Jack Bauer:

"CTU, this is Jack. We have a problem."

24 keeps proving that it's the best show on television. The Morris torture seen was excellent and who saw Rita shooting McCarthy coming? The show is hitting it's stride this season.I hope Aaron Pierce,ex-Pres.Logan, and Martha make it into this season's storyline.

Is it just me or am I the only one who was utterly pissed with Jack by the end of the episode. How in the world could he not see what was going on with his sis-in-law with the phone call? With her hesistation and the fake 'thank you Susan'. Just the look on her face alone should have told Jack something was up. I was so mad I walked away from the tv going 'oh come on we know the house is going to blow up and Jack's going to survive.' It was so staged and pitiful I actual threw something across the room.
