April 23, 2007: Midnight — 1 am
Isn't that always the way? Jack's got everything under control until some bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, by-the-book punk comes in and ruins it. Way to go, Doyle. I get the impression we're supposed to be wowed by Mike's expert tracking skills (I mean, Nadia certainly is), but I'm still not buying Mr. Silver Spoons as Jack Jr. Maybe it would help if we knew what happened in Denver. On the plus side, I guess we do owe a little credit to Doyle for inadvertently saving Jack's life. Sure, Cheng's got the big bad nuke component and we're about to be smack dab in the middle of a Chinese-Russian rage sandwich, but at least we can rest easy in the knowledge that Jack's still kicking — and therefore mere minutes away from bringing the pain on someone who needs it. He's like the Old Faithful of vigilante justice (my apologies to Chuck Norris).
Meanwhile, I guess that foreboding vibe coming off Bill and Karen a few weeks ago was less about a literal death and more about the murder of Bill's career. And possibly their marriage. I hate seeing a good man go down just to appease Washington's need for a scapegoat, but with the season moving into a whole new arc here in the home stretch, it's kind of refreshing to see the fallout from the day's events. But perhaps the strangest part of this whole political dance is how much I'm suddenly liking Tom Lennox. He's sort of the Simon Cowell of the White House — he's no diplomat, but he shoots from the hip and more often than not, he's dead right. You can almost hear him prefacing his comments with an "I'm not being rude, but.... "
Let's see, a few other biggies: Chloe finds impressive new ways to use her snark to cut a man to the quick, with her snide "how about don't arm nuclear bombs for terrorists?"; Nadia's attempting to fill Bill's shoes until we get a new director of CTU, which should make that whole making-out-with-Milo routine delightfully more taboo (and no less gross); Audrey's one debriefing away from being that crazy homeless woman who talks to her own hand outside the frozen-yogurt place; and Powers Boothe is reaching all new levels of inappropriate in the Oval Office — "Call the media, tell them the acting president's a dirty old man." OK, sir, first of all, your pillow talk needs some work, and secondly... ewwww!

"How about don't arm nuclear bombs for terrorists...?"
Wrote that down as soon as Chloe said that.
That's about the most she'd said all "day."
Again, the show has some real places mixed in with fictional ones (there are major power poles near the Tampa exit on the 118 freeway but there's no 305 freeway).

So having survived a two-day bank robbery on The Nine and now having been held prisoner by Jack's Chinese abductor, Kim Raver must be relieved to have been cast in a comedy pilot with Brooke Shields. Makes me wonder what her fate on 24 is. So Jim Jones is now intimate with that alien woman from Invasion. Talk about mixed breeds! So Chloe got her snarkiness back though I felt sorry for Morris after the "nuclear bombs for terrorists" line. Times like this I wish Edger was still alive. And Tom Lennox now doesn't want Karen to go. I feel sorry for Bill after all he has done. Hope Nadia's being in command means we've seen the last of her and Milo's intimacy. One can only wish. Oh, and is Logan dead and where are Mrs. Bauer and her son? Maybe she's back on Heroes with Nathan Petrelli...

I agree. I really hope we have seen the last of Nadia and Milo's relationship. I still think he is a mole. I would love for Nadia and Dolye to get together. What do you all think?

I'd be very sorry to see Bill Buchanan leave. He's been the quiet voice of reason and cool in the middle of all this madness. Karen is genuinely upset with having the task of firing him, but the explanation for releasing Fayed two years ago is legitimate, and making him the scapegoat is just plain wrong. She should have resigned instead, no matter how much Tom Lennox claims the administration needs her (whose administration is it, anyway?). And I am so sick of the creepy vice-president scowling and growling his way through every scene. He's supposed to be menacing, but to me, he's just crazy, like Colonel Jack Ripper in "Dr. Strangelove." And as much as I will love Chloe for all time, I really cringed when she spat that killer line to Morris. I do like him and feel for the pain, both physical and emotional, he's been going through this day. Chloe really kicked him when he was down.

My favorite Not-Intentionally-Funny Line of the Week had to be when Tom was trying to convince Karen to fire bill and he said "Just DO it!" in a tone reminiscent of a seventh grader peer-pressuring his friend into smoking.
Speaking of Bill and Karen, who else thought Karen was a little tactless when firing Bill? I mean, I know the situation is hard, but still. Bill and Karen are two of my favorite characters, and I hope they are in good standing, and still standing, by day's end.
So now there is going to be an interim CTU director, and I surprisingly find myself wanting it to be Erin Driscoll; she would completely shut up Milo in seconds.
The president conducting his little affair in the Oval Office was creepy. Good thing that never really happens...

I felt so bad for Jack. He rescues the one person that he loves and then he is arrested. He can't even be there for her to let her know that she is safe now. The image of him being hauled out while Audrey cowers in the corner was enough to make me cry. Poor Jack, he can't seem to receive any happiness today.

How much do you want to bet that the new Interim CTU Chief will be former defense secretary (and Audrey Raines poppa) Heller? That would really shake things up.

Good guess Great8. That would make things interesting and being Audrey's poppa would make her plight more tear wrenching.
Who do you think is the 'spy' leaking the chip info? I think it is the Veep's main squeeze. He is just too 'head over heels' for her. I can see the ring through his nose now. But, Tom would be a mild shocker. Mr tough on illegals could use his tape for even more leverage.
Good show. I thought Ms Raines should get an Emmy for the Best mumbling loony. She played it so well, really!

THree separate notes here: 1- Here's a thought/question that has been nagging me - President Palmer wears a wedding ring - so where's his wife?!?! Why was the sister the one making decisions for and about him? Just wondering... 2- I also cringed when Chloe made the "arming nukes" comment to MOrris - his reaction was awesome though! The hurt and then the tenderness toward Chloe after she said "that's not how I really feel" was well done. 3- Somehow, I don't see Nadia as "in charge". But since Morris armed nukes, Chloe is prone to break rules to help Jack and Miles is just a jealous weasel, I guess Nadia WAS the best choice after all. Let's hope Bill's replacement arrives soon!
Love this show!!!

ktdas, good questions about Pres. Palmer. In fact, if you look at the character profiles on fox.com/24, he is indeed listed as "married". I've noticed that plot hole for a while now.

I just love it when some of you refer to the VP as Jim Jones. To funny.
Nadia being promoted to Head, NO WAY!
I so hope it is Hellar that takes over. He then can tell Nadia to go set in a corner. She just needs to set there and look good. He will take the leash off of Jack.
And I wish that someone would b**ch slap Lennox and Chad Lowes characters. I can't stand those 2 wimps.

I think that Audrey was suffering from some type of forced drug addiction by the chinese - probably heroin.
I am liking Tom Lennox more and more. I am liking Morris less and less. He deserved the Chloe slam last night and now it seems that a transfer isn't going to happen anytime soon!

Can some one please explain to me the following: Bill Buchanan came to CTU Los Angeles during the events of day 4. The series time line puts the events of day 5 eighteen months after that. This season we were told that Jack was held for 20 months by the Chinese. Bill Buchanan is stil at CTU Los Angeles and has been according to the series timeline for just over 3 years, and yet was fired for having Fayed in custody in Seattle two years ago and releasing him. Does this mean he was running two CTU offices at the same time, or I am I just over-thinking things?

Really sloppy loop holes as we head for the home stretch.
Chinese agents shooting down CTU (US Government) helicopters does not fall under the category of raising an international incident. It is not like they have a dozen or so dead bodies to prove who the instigators were.
Kidnapping (possibly former) high ranking US officials, is not sufficient to raise an international incident?
Worst exchange ever. Cheng did not come prepared with any way to determine if what Jack handed him was real. Innards from a russian gameboy anyone?
Usual porous CTU perimeter....
