May 21, 2007: 4 — 5 am / 5 — 6 am

Say what you will about Day Six, it certainly went out with a bang — and not a small amount of closure. The Russians are satisfied that the Chinese no longer have that all-important component, and are standing down. Cheng's in custody, Josh is safe with his mom, and Phillip Bauer will presumably do his hard time in Davy Jones' Locker. Our once-hawkish vice president understands that, hey, maybe this whole commander-in-chief thing isn't as easy as it looks. (Might wanna mention that with your get-well-soon bouquet to Wayne Palmer there, Noah. Do you think they make a "sorry I almost had you removed from power" card at Hallmark?) Bill and Karen have escaped both scandal and prosecution, and can retire together to make kissy-face for the rest of their patriotic yet morally responsible days. Nadia's proven to herself that she's not half bad as a leader, and can devote herself to bereavement therapy with Milo's way hotter brother. Doyle's down but not out, and likely to best this whole possibly-blind-in-both-eyes scenario with a miraculous recovery the next time Jack needs him most. Morris and Chloe will thankfully introduce the world to O'Brian 2.0, the world's first offspring with sarcasm built right into its DNA. And Jack, bless his tired, broken heart, finally had it out with his father — not the one at the bottom of the ocean, but the one who cut him so deeply by calling him cursed and taking the love of his life away. Not to mention leaving him to rot in a Chinese prison. We leave Jack not much different than we found him at the beginning of the day: lost, bewildered, and not sure if he can do this any more. Maybe if the world could stay out of harm's way for half a minute, he could figure out what to do about it.

I'll leave you guys to discuss the nitty-gritty details of how awesome it was when the oil rig went up in a plume of orange smoke and flame, or how you wanted to punch Cheng right in the teeth when he said his country wouldn't abandon him like we did Jack, or how relieved you were that Audrey didn't flutter open her eyelids and profess her love as Jack walked out the door…. But first, allow me to make a bold statement, if you will: Bill Buchanan is the new Aaron Pierce. Fly that chopper, you silver fox! Jack Bauer may well be the greatest American hero since G.I. Joe, but I'll always love the truly good guys that fill out the margins of this show. And when at least one of them gets to survive the season, that means the terrorists lose. We'll see you in January, Jack.

Although the last two hours could almost make up for the last 22, I still thought there were a LOT of lose ends.

-What happened in Dever?
- Will Nadia and Mike ever get together?
-Is Josh Jack's son?
-Did Logan really die?

Also, weren't we suppose to see someone that the 24 series hasn't seen in a long, long time? I was thinking Mandy or Kim. Instead, they give us Heler and Audrey.

Although the last two hours were pretty good, I'm disappointed with this season as a whole. Does anyone else agree/disagree? What would you liked to have changed?

So TV Guide's David Hochman writes a huge spoiler about the 24 finale that someone "we all thought was long dead" would return, and then.....BOOOOOM....it never happened.

Way to go TV GUIDE!!! Picking up internet rumors and passing them off as fact shows what kind of journalistic integrity you guys have. I'm left to wonder if I could/should ever again believe what TV Guide has to say.

Nice blog.

And before it all begins...I'm tired of people complaining about Day 6. Don't watch then. Yeah the writers made a few mistakes like thinking we didnt need to see Jack as much this season, but overall it was a good season. It ended nicely.

I'm looking forward to Day 7. I heard there will be major changes.

Were we supposed to take away the possibility that Jack was contemplating suicide in that last scene? The gun in his hand, the view down the cliff side, the silent advance of the clock to 6am.

I'm glad that I can be at peace during the 24 off season. Jack's gonna be ok, Bill and Doyle are alive (despite my heart-thumping concern to the contrary), and next season can be absolutely anything at this point.

Most people - and by most I include the actual producers of the show - recognize that this season was a bit off the mark. But they really brought it home and finished the season in a pretty spectacular and dramatic way.

One other thing - I was psyched when Jack started "loadin' for war" and threw everything he had into his Jack Sack.

Well done, 24 - I can't wait to see you again next year.

Loved it..

Why is everyone so convinced that Josh is Jack's son...this is not a predictable soap opera!

While this day may not have been as good as the others it has not (IMHO) "jumped the shark" "bit the dust".

Looking forward to January!!!

I'm tired of people complaining about Day 6. Don't watch then.

And I am equally tired of people telling us to not watch. Newsflash-if all of us who were dissastisfied with this season (and we outnumber you folks that liked it by a mile and a half) the shows ratings would probably warrant cancellation. Then you'd complain that we weren't giving it a chance. We stick with it because of our love of the first 5 seasons and our faith in the writers and producers. But I'm sure alot of people won't be back next year. I will, but if we get another season like this one, it will be my last as well.

I stick with the show out of loyalty and the hope that things would get better. The good thing is that a show like this can come back stronger next season. I thought the show was running out of steam after season 4 and then they come back with season 5 which I consider the best bar none. But with no real cliffhanger, they can start season 7 without really having to address anything that happened this season.

I am shocked that we didn't find out Josh was Jack's son or brother. The only way Phillip's obsession with Josh makes any kind of sense is if it turns out he was his father and not his grandfather.

And what was that visit from Milo's brother about? Milo died like 2 or 3 hours ago and the way-hotter brother comes by (at 4:30am!) to clean out his locker? All kind of pointless.

Glad they didn't kill off Bill. I thought for sure he was a goner.

An idea for a new drinking game. Watch season 6 on DVD when it comes out and every time Jack pulls a gun on a fellow CTU agent, you have to chug. You'll be drunker than Otis from the Andy Griffith Show!

All the comments I just read add up to a better blog than the one the tv guide poser of a writer "wrote". I am still baffled as to how she is keeping her job since her favorite thing to write is, "I'll leave it up to all of you to discus...blah, blah, blah..." Isn't that her JOB?? To discuss?? This blog has been as dissapointing as this awful 24 season. A pointless ending to a very pointless season.

I like where we left Jack...on the edge of a cliff. I'm not sure the implication was suicide, but it was definitely a metaphor.

This day 6 pushed him, us, and the show to an edge. Everyone knows that we've reached the end of what we've done in the past...hence the viewer frustration...and now we'll be "jumping off" together into something different for day 7. This ending set us up perfectly for that leap of faith.

As for the "return" of someone from the show's past, was that Stewart? It was clear that Chloe knew him well.

As I've said many times here throughout the season, I just don't understand why so many viewers of "24" seem to demand absolute perfection from it each and every week. True, last season was a stronger season, and perhaps cannot be topped. It was truly memorable. Anything immediately following it could be considered weaker in comparison.

But there has been SO much whining and nitpicking about every little detail this season that I can't believe those posters are true fans. Perhaps they thought they were infusing a little "tough love" into their comments, but I sensed genuine anger! Hey everyone, it's a TV show! It's just designed to entertain! Either you're going to buy into it and enjoy the ride or not. And I've always found "24" to be entertaining and exciting in a real edge-of-your-seat way.

But a lot of viewers just don't see the forest for the trees. I don't care if Jack was able to drive from point A to point B in less time than it would take according to Mapquest,or that Morris recovered remarkably quickly from having a hole drilled into his shoulder. I accept all such fine points because I'm interested in the overall story.

And I never expect a lot of character development because this isn't the kind of show that really requires it (just enough to make us care for Jack and his allies). In fact, I'm almost surprised that some characters have been drawn as fully as they have (the old "Mission:Impossible" series was classic and ingenious without bothering with even a speck of character development among the leads).

As for the finale, I was very satisfied with it. There was enough closure for me, although the fate of some characters saddened me (Audrey, whom I did like, and Curtis come to mind). I think if either Jack or Phillip Bauer was Josh's father, someone would have simply said so. No need for it to have been such a secret.
I'm assuming ex-Pres. Logan is a goner, and his wife is in a straitjacket. Poor Aaron Pierce--he deserved a happier outcome. I'm glad Bill and Karen survived all of this, and get to retire together. I didn't expect the Veep to actually show some humility in the closing moments of the crisis, but it was welcome!

And finally, who would have ever thought that Chloe would be the character to provide us with the series' first "awww!" moment (although the infamous cougar who once contemplated having Kim for lunch might have gotten an "awww" or two). I've always loved Chloe, and I do like Morris, so I'm happy that they're happy. But will a baby take her out of the action next year? I hope not.

Jack will be okay. Can you think of a more resilient person? It won't be easy for him, but in the end he just doesn't allow himself to give up completely.

I'd say we've all done all right by "24" this season.

I liked most of the episode - but I didn't care for the way it ended - with Jack "apparently" contemplating suicide. That is, of course, my own opinion. I'm just used to the cliff hangers, not "tranquil" endings!

I also wish the writers would learn to tie up some loose ends. What about the former First Lady? And Aaron? I'm still wondering about Behrooz from Day 5!

That said, I'm still looking forward to Day 7!

Blowing up an oil platform does not save the season for me. I've been there for all 6 seasons and this one was by far the worst. Killing off most the people we know was a mistake, there was nobody to root for. Chloe was reduced to a bit player this season. The producers forget this show takes place in one day- and they are the ones who came up with it, so they need to stick to it.

They never addressed Logan's status. Thinking back on how stupid much of this season was, why did Jack's dad give him Logan? 12,000 people died earlier in the day, remember that? They didn't know how to use that as a "character." This season this show became no better than a CBS drama series. They really, really dumbed it down for the masses.

I thought Day 6 wrapped up pretty good.
The ending was rather touching, brought a little tear to my eye. I really felt for my boy Jack when he lost Audrey and father figure Sec. Heller, and then as he stood looking over the water contemplating his next move in life - Kiefer's acting was terrific.

Season 6 wasn't perfect by any means, but there were episodes here and there that met the level of 24 we know and love.

I look forward to Day 7 w/great anticipation and expect awesome things from the writers and producers. I'll be on Jack Bauer withdrawal until then.
