Supernatural: Time is On My Side - Maggotedly Delicious

A feast for horror lovers was served up banquet style with Supernatural’s Time is On My Side episode.

From the hideous and harrowing victim scenes, the revolting back story of Bella’s character and the use of a serrated melon baller, there was a smorgasbord of choices for everyone.

Billy Drago was fantastic as creepy Dr. Benton. His portrayal was superb. I thought it was interesting when he was explaining to Dean that he never once took more than he needed. Even with his twisted mentality, he was right. The victim who walked into the hospital still had a portion of his liver, even if he was gutted and died later on. Livers can rejuvenate. Then the man who had only one kidney stolen, Dr. Drago didn’t take both. Talk about the ultimate statement in Conscious Consumption.

This leads me to the poor girl strapped to the table of horror and the maggots on her arm. What a mess that was.

A few years back, I was completing one of my courses in Forensic Sciences, and it was on Forensic Epidemiology. Through this course, I garnered a healthy respect for the miraculous way nature takes care of everything. Maggots are an important part of this process.

Maggots will usually group together in maggot masses. They certainly had a grouping going on, on that poor girl’s arm. Symbiosis necrosis was alive and well and working.

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I would be uncomfortable having maggots on me at any time. It was hard to tell whether they used real ones or not, as the scene was so well done. Maggot Therapy is becoming more prominent in treatment these days of particularly septic wound injuries.

Sam was so kind to her, his gentle eyes and tender touches, trying to make her feel better under such dire circumstances. Jared is sure one fine actor.

I found Bella’s back story disturbing. Considering what was done to her as a child by her Father and her Mother’s implied agreement with it, she put her trust in a Demon who appeared to her, in the form of a little girl, on the innocent landscape of a swing set.

To a desperate child, looking for a way out from the abuse, selling her soul in exchange for having her parents killed and being freed from the abuse for ten years, would have seemed like a long time before her deal was due.

We now understand why Red Sky at Morning was so significant to her storyline, the resolution of why she took the Colt and the fact that it is Lilith who also holds her contract.

Fast forwarding to the scene with Dean in the hotel room, I’m glad he did not end up killing her. When he looked up and saw the simple hanging of the Devil’s Shoestring herb over her door, in the hopes of protection from the evil coming for her, his eyes displayed his core sense of honour.

He’s a smart one, our Dean is. Having the blow-up dolls in the beds was the ultimate “gotcha” to Bela.

Regarding the phone call she made, does Ruby have a cell phone?

I’m not sure if we’ve seen the last of Bela. The last view of her looking out the window, with the distant sounds of hounds, I think could go either way.

As you know, I’ve never been a fan of the Bela character. I do feel it is unfortunate that the wonderful actress Lauren Cohan however will not be affiliated with SN once her storyline ends.

It was good to see Bobby again, even if it was for such a short time. I hope that the charcter Rufus Turner, well acted by Steven Williams, will make a return performance. He was gritty and edgy and added an interesting dimension to the show.

The big gross-out for me was the build-up for the use of the melon baller on Sam’s eyes. It was simply horrifying. The way the Doc had taped his eyes open, then stroked Sam’s forehead, before moving in with the baller was so cringe worthy. I kept replaying it over and over and over in my mind, its like I’m running from it and I can’t get the visual to leave.

I can’t help but wonder if there is more to this scene than meets the eye (no pun intended). The expression an “eye for an eye” came to my mind last night while watching it.

Can you imagine the discussions that must have taken place during their weekly meeting about this particular scene. I can just picture Kripke rubbing his hands together in anticipatory glee.

Jared really portrayed the desperation his character Sam was feeling when it came to the discussion with Dean about entertaining the possibility of allowing the Doctor to help Dean via translating the formula. Jensen did a remarkable job of setting Sam straight on this particular matter.

I felt my panic level rise when they buried Dr. Benton alive. It certainly was graphic and disturbing. The journal on top of the chains holding the container shut, said a lot.

The interaction between Sam and Dean in the motel room and telling each other to be careful, before the look they exchanged as they separated said it all. It was touching and warm and incredibly well acted.

In regards to next week’s preview, do you think Dean could be going to the Realm of the Dead, as opposed to Hell? The Realm of the Dead is often thought of as the Underworld. It consists of an entryway or location in the physical world, or in the form of an afterlife, which can be visited by living persons without them having to die to gain entry.

In addition, Black Dogs, in some cultures, are considered to be guardians of treasure, either in human form or animal form. They also tend to prefer trails or roads to hunt their prey or protect their treasure. With Dean running down the trail in next week’s preview, I wonder if this will have any significance?

Next week is going to come too soon. I sincerely hope the Actors’ Strike does not take place. From a fan's perspective, waiting until the Fall to find out what is going to happen will be long enough. I hate to think the wait could be prolonged with yet another strike.

Just a little aside:
As you know, Jensen will begin filming My Bloody Valentine 3D, on Monday in Pittsburgh. A few weeks back, I contacted the Pittsburgh Film Office to check into the possibility of being a background actor or extra on the film. I thought it would be a lot of fun. Alas, I am not a citizen of the US and therefore am ineligible to apply.

I thought perhaps maybe one of my US blogging buddies might like to try for it. Can you imagine the bragging rights? Here is the link: [url http://www.pghfilm.org/[/url]. They are presently not casting for extras on the movie, but this could change at anytime I was advised. Good luck and have fun!

Ok you lost me when you started talking maggots....umm ewww, just ewww. LOL

this epi was AWESOME (even if I had to watch the bug part between my fingers) and the wait for next week will seem endless. Do we know if its going to be a cliffhanger??? I HATE cliffhangers, makes me not want to watch if I'm going to have to wait all summer.

Great recap again. :)

Well, Ms Cassie, I don't know that bugspray would help the maggot situation...but I'm thinking that some salt action could be used!!!! We know that the boys have plenty of that!!!

Great blog Sandra, as always you give a perspective to the episodes that I haven't thought of. You catch so much more that Cassie and I do...I think we're to busy laughing at the little snide Deanisms!!!! and of course drooling!!!!

Last nite when Jared was strapped to the table...my personal fantasy :))...reminded me of House of Wax, of course then he was strapped in a chair...of course Jared strapped to anything is always a good visual.
Next week will come much too soon then we will have to live on reruns for 4 months :(((

Keep on rockin Sandra!!!!
Love ya

Talk about the ultimate statement in Conscious Consumption.

Gee, I hadn't thought of it that way . . .

I thought it was a sad sign of how desperate Sam was that he would even consider asking Dean to live that kind of a life. Break my heart, why dontcha?

Ugh...maggots. Cut it out, Kripke! I can handle (& love) the blood-n-guts, but maggots? Maggots are just...GAH!!!!

I'm very afraid of just how far Sam will go to try & save Dean. Very afraid!

Thanks very much Tina.

I sort of have a different take on things, when I watch Supernatural, but in my real life too.;)

I sure wish I could watch an episode with you and Cassie sometime, I can imagine that it would be a riot. If I'm ever down your way, that would sure be a fun time.

Last nite when Jared was strapped to the table...my personal fantasy

Jared strapped to anything is always a good visual.

100% agreement with you there, darl'in.:^O

You're sure right about the House of Wax. I hadn't thought of it before you mentioned it.

don't know that bugspray would help the maggot situation...but I'm thinking that some salt action could be used!!!!
It's going to be a long Summer........

I think I'm going to have to ramp up my love of maggots. Truly, they do provide a valuable service.:)

Love ya too,Tina.

I thought it was a sad sign of how desperate Sam was that he would even consider asking Dean to live that kind of a life.

I agree with that wholeheartedly, Whimsy! I could understand that Sam was so incredibly desperate and grasping at anything but how could he think that Dean would consider living like that?

Considering what was done to her as a child by her Father and her Mother’s implied agreement with it

I feel like such a dolt because I completely missed that!!! I remember when she flashed to herself sitting on a bed, crying, and a man comes in and shuts the door...but I thought that was her remembering when she was told her parents were dead - or it was where she went after their death! I totally didn't get it and now I feel like a dolt. Now I understand the comment that was made at E! in regards to the interview with Kripke...a guy commented on the "cliched" backstory they used for Bela and I disagreed with him! I still don't mind her backstory but now I understand why he said it was a cliched sob story. *sigh* I'm a dork!

But beyond my dorkiness, I really enjoyed the episode though I also cringed away from the maggots - eeewwww!!! And I was chanting c'mon Dean c'mon Dean when that melon-baller was heading toward Sammy's eye! But I actually wasn't so sure about Rufus. There was something about him that put me off...maybe I just don't like him as a drunk but I was waiting for his eyes to turn black just from the way he was talking. How did he know about Dean's deal?!

And it was a great delight to see Billy Drago again even though it was hard to see it was him under the cool makeup effects! Such a delight as a bad guy. He does it so well.

I was also glad that Dean didn't kill Bela. It's just not him and I didn't want him to do that. And I was laughing out loud so hard at the blow up dolls!

Regarding the phone call she made, does Ruby have a cell phone?

At the time I assumed she was talking to whoever her "boss" was and then by the end of the episode I assumed she was talking to Lillith.

I did enjoy Bela and am sorry that she is gone ('cuz I believe she is). And I was taken by surprise (not just being slow!) by her backstory. Never in a million years would have thought she'd made a deal too. And despite all of her many flaws and crimes, I felt some sympathy for her at the end when she was crying and obviously frightened.

I didn't even think of burying Dr. Benton alive. I thought they would chop him up into pieces and bury the pieces separately so he couldn't put himself back together. I like the buried alive much better though - much better ending for a bad guy.

I think that's all I have to say! Major anticipation for next week and the cliffhanger we're sure to get.

"thought it was a sad sign of how desperate Sam was that he would even consider asking Dean to live that kind of a life. Break my heart, why dontcha?"

It sure broke mine too Whimsy. It was so sad and yet very true to life. Facing the loss of a loved one, can certainly focus the ones facing being left behind to areas they would never have dreamed of before.

Dean has been going through so much as his time comes due, but Sammy has been too and last night just clenched at my heart.:(

Erica, you too, my friend?

options trading

Run my little friends, run for your lives...

"I thought they would chop him up into pieces and bury the pieces separately so he couldn't put himself back together. I like the buried alive much better though - much better ending for a bad guy."

Who would have thought such a nice girl, had such thoughts? Erica, that would have been brilliant if they'd sliced and diced and buried the parts separately.

I felt queasy with the being buried alive part.

To give you an idea of how I am about that, and this relates to inanimate objects, when I go down a Doll aisle in the store and I see them all wrapped up, I can feel my breathing increasing, with just the thought of being under plastic like that. Urggh!!!

I loved the blow-up dolls too and what they were wearing - it was too funny.:^O

Erica, you too, my friend?

Yes, m'dear, I cannot stand anything bug- or creepy-like. *shivers* I'm giving myself the creepy-crawlies!

Who would have thought such a nice girl, had such thoughts?

I look so sweet and innocent, don't I?! ;) I thought of that as that was how the Judge was dealt with on Buffy until Buffy blew him up.

I just made the mistake of reading the comments on Tina's episode summary. People frustrate me! There are some going on and on about hating Bela's backstory because it's supposed to make us feel sorry for her and all. Sure, I felt a twinge of sympathy when she faced her death terrified but she's still a "bad guy". Kripke himself has said that it was not intended to redeem her just to explain - and she isn't redeemed! Oh, and people (or maybe just one person) are all ticked off because the fact that Lillith (is it one "l" or two?) holds "everyone's" contracts means it's just one more reason to believe that Dean isn't "special" and is just like everyone else and that there isn't a demon who specifically wanted him dead. Sure, maybe that will be the case, how do I know...but it might not be!! Just because there is one demon who holds all contracts doesn't mean that she or someone else didn't specifically want Dean gone!! The CRD that took Dean's deal made it pretty plain that he is known amongst the demons so who's to say?! *sigh* I get so fed up with people assuming they know what is going on in Kripke's head and that they know exactly what is going to happen. No one can possibly know that 'cuz we're not Kripke!!

I'm sorry, I'm ranting. But I have no one to rant to in person so you guys have to listen to it. My apologies and I'll try to stop now. *takes very, very deep breath*

Hi Erica,

I haven't read it and after what you've said, I don't think I will. I so agree with you, we have no idea what Kripke is thinking or planning and that's what makes it all so enjoyable.

As far as Bela, I think she proved exactly what she's made of, when she shot at the beds, thinking she'd gotten Sam and Dean - she's such a mercenary.

As far as Lilith holding all the contracts, to me, this makes sense. As the Chief Demon, she would have ownership overall. I imagine it's going to be what she dishes out, that will separate everyone and everything, and that should be interesting.

I love reading your comments Erica and I never find that you rant, you always have informed opinions and I look forward to them.

Thanks, Sandra, for not making me sound like a ranting lunatic! ;)

I enjoy reading Tina's blog itself but I don't normally read the comments. But there weren't many and found myself reading them this week. *eyeroll* Mistake 'cuz it just gets me heated up!

I so agree with you, we have no idea what Kripke is thinking or planning and that's what makes it all so enjoyable.

Exactly! I feel that way about any show I watch, especially our boys and Lost. I trust the creative team and go along for the ride!

And again I say exactly! Bela really showed her true colors by (supposedly) shooting both boys in cold blood. She is certainly not redeemed. But I'll show sympathy for anyone in terror over going to Hell as she was at the end!

I agree. I think that with the exception of Lucifer himself (who Kripke has said we won't see) Lilith is pretty much Big Bad Numero Uno or at least one of his VPs! *grin*

I really look forward to next week to see how much more Kripke will reveal about this Lilith chick.
