Supernatural – NRFTW – Tripping the Chasm

Every pore of my body is leaching with despair and torment after watching Supernatural’s No Rest For The Wicked episode.

I had been anticipating this episode with unhinged worry. I thought I had done a good job of bracing myself emotionally for what I felt could be coming. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

From the very opening sequence and close-up of Dean’s face when he awoke from his day-mere regarding the Hellhounds, to Sam’s gentle reassurances about saving him, it fore-shadowed the unfolding tragedy that was to come.

Jensen’s expert portrayal of Dean in the last stages of his deal was acting at its best.

Jared, as the distressed baby brother, willing to do anything to save his big brother, couldn’t have acted the part any better. He brought to life the incredible heartache of knowing that you’re going to be losing someone you love and that terrible panic that those last few hours take on in a desperate bid to do anything to try and make sure it does not happen.

Katie Cassidy did a great job both as her character of Ruby as well as channeling the Lilith character, particularly the part when she opened the doors for the Hellhounds and she looked at Sam and said “Yes, oh yes!”

I’m still not sure why Lilith would have kissed Sam.

I was taken aback when Dean punched Ruby in the face. It was shocking.

Jim Beaver as Bobby was just exceptional. It was so heartwarming when he said that family doesn’t end with blood and later when he called Dean – son.

There were some priceless one-liners – “Miss Universe of lying skanks”, among many others.

I loved the way they used the holy water with the sprinkler system and the fact that it gave Dean hope, at least for a few moments.

The poor family of the little girl that Lilith chose to inhibit.

There were many heart-touching moments with so much angst in them that they were almost unbearable to watch.

In the motel room, when Sam and Dean were trying to decide on the best way to deal with the impending battle - Dean: “All I’m saying Sammy is you’re my weak spot…and I’m yours”.

When they were in the Impala with Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive playing. It was such a wonderful brotherly moment when Dean got Sam singing and the temporary laughter was so genuine and real.

The goodbye scene brought me to my knees emotionally. The look on their faces, the increased breathing, the knowing.

Sam: “What am I suppose to do?”

Dean: “Keep fighting. Take care of my wheels. Sammy, remember what Dad taught you, okay. And remember what I taught you”.

Then the looks on both their faces as tears brimmed, lips trembled and pure anguish, hanging in the air, as the clock struck 12:00.

The close-up of Dean’s face as he heard the hellhounds coming for him, that moment of stillness before the running and then the horrible reality of what was to transpire in that room.

Seeing Dean ripped apart and Sam crying out to him, unable to save him was very sad and upsetting.

I don’t know when Lilith slipped into Ruby’s body, but it fitted the storyline perfectly. Clearly, Lilith felt she had the upper hand in the whole matter. She was wrong in at least one way.

Whatever special gift Sam has, it was enough to send Lilith running.

From the look displayed on Lilith’s (Ruby) face, she made it clear that she thought she had dealt final blows to both the boys. When Sam rose from the floor, even before he had the knife, it was the look of fear that crossed her face and Lilith telling him “back” that said everything.

Dean’s fate:

I don’t believe Dean has descended into the total realm of Hell yet.

It was brilliant that the writers chose to use energy lines to snare Dean in.

There is a school of thought that believes that energy lines encompass and criss-cross the earth’s core, including unexplained chasms in multi-dimensional fields.

Taking a closer look at the mosaic of Dean’s injuries in relation to this, you will note that when the Hellhounds attacked, there was massive arterial spraying and pumping from Dean’s heart, including the shredding of his shirt, but with his jacket still on him.

Yet, later when we see Dean caught up in the web, you will see that there appears to be no injury to his heart, that the original side of his shirt is left unshredded and he is without his jacket.

Using the analogy of the body Meridian lines in terms of this portrayal, the Heart Meridian governs spirits and emotions in addition to blood circulation via the brain and the five senses. More importantedly however, it also functions as the mechanism which adapts external stimuli to the internal environment of the body.

Dean showed once again what an honourable human being he is. He ensured that Sam did not act out of desperation by sacrificing himself to save Dean. He showed once again why he’s the ultimate older brother.

I’m really hoping that he will be able to hold onto this core strength when faced with the upcoming challenges of where he is, using the energy paths as his jump point to get the hell out of there.

The scene that pierced my heart:

“Ut imago est animi voltus sic indices oculi (The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter)”. Cicero

The above quote says it all. I’m still crying over the way that Dean was restrained, the look of terror on his face and in his eyes, his injuries and his haunting screams.

But most of all, it was the way they used a hook in his right shoulder to hold him in one place. A hook? OMG – poor Dean!

Then, the words: “Somebody help me. SAM! SAM!”

Hi Cassie,

He sure is the Master of Evil, truly. The thought process of Kripke and the writers is something.

I feel so bad with what has happened. There is so many ways this story can go now, almost all of them angst riddled.:(

Hey Sandra!

I was wondering if Dean was actually in Hell proper, or maybe in some sort of Purgatory. Either way, OMG!!!!!!!!!!

I kind of think Lilith kissed Sam because she was trying out her new "grown-up & pretty" meatsuit. Also, because she probably know it would really bother him.

What an awesome account of the episode. I have to go back and watch it again. I don't know if my heart can take it. I started crying as soon as the song started. You know the song ladies

Hi ya Rap,

I really don't think Dean is in Hell yet, but I'm with you, either way, where he's at is positively horrifying and scary beyond belief.

And truly, that hook piercing his shoulder has just about finished me.

He's so hurt and scared and upset and then I saw that and I just folded internally.

Then the poor guy calling out for help and for Sammy, well, I'm beyond gone.

I can see why now Jensen was crying off screen while this episode was being filmed. It must have been very hard to do, for everyone involved.:(

"I kind of think Lilith kissed Sam because she was trying out her new "grown-up & pretty" meatsuit. Also, because she probably know it would really bother him."

Good point, I hadn't thought of it like that. I guess I was looking for this deep issue involvement or something, but what you say, makes good sense.

Our poor guys, eh Rap!:(:(:(

Those final words give me goosebumps :((
Sandra, what about the saying that the eyes are the gateway to the soul?? the fact that they went deep into Deans "dead" eyes to show us his "hell" or purgatory if you will has to mean something...not completely dead not all the way in hell yet...IDK just a thought..

Rockin blog as always!!!

Hey there Sandra,
I didn't know all that about the energy lines. It is interesting.

This was such a heartbreaking episode. Those teary scenes were spot on.

I am dying to know how season 4 is going to start.
Dean can't be dead, but his body is so badly torn apart. How the heck are they gonna fix that?

Hey ya Tina, thanks so much.

"Sandra, what about the saying that the eyes are the gateway to the soul?? the fact that they went deep into Deans "dead" eyes to show us his "hell" or purgatory if you will has to mean something...not completely dead not all the way in hell yet...IDK just a thought.."

I'm in 100% agreement with you.

With the eyes being the gateway to the soul, I truly believe that Dean is trapped right now between the two worlds and is awaiting his final fate.

I truly don't believe he's gone to Hell yet.

Given his injuries, and the arterial spraying, it would be hard to come back from those significant injuries, but, he could be in a level three shock area, which could render him virtually comatose, something similar to being locked inside his own body without being able to make any physical signs known.

It sure will be interesting to see how they will bring him back home and in what condition he'll be in.

Jensen did such an excellent job though of portraying the fear and scaredness of being in such a horrible, horrible position.:(

Hi Lisa,

How are you doing? I hope everything is going well.

"I didn't know all that about the energy lines. It is interesting."

It's amazing how the body works eh Lisa? Once a month, I get my Meridian lines worked on. The major ones run next to a person's spinal cord. I know for me personally, it seems to work really well.

As well, there is a massage series that is called Chi Nei Tsang. It is a healing Tao massage that helps to balance the internal organ energy with the assistance to the path of well being.

Based on where they had Dean, I felt that the energy sequencing is going to play a big factor on where and when he'll end up.

As far as his injuries, you are so right, they are so substantial - paticuarly the heart one.

Now, if Bobby gets over to the house, both he and Sammy can apply the required pressure to the wounds. Direct pressure for 15-20 minutes will stop 95-98% of all bleeding wounds. They'd have to be quick though to ensure there was not oxygen cutoff to avoid any brain damage.

It was all so very, very upsetting.

And now, we have this long wait ahead of us.....poor Dean....poor Sam....poor us!!!:(

SJ,

What an emotional ride we went on last night!!! This has to be one of the best season finales I've ever seen for any show. Everything that went into the production, from writing to directing to acting was phenomenal. I think it's going to be a long while before I recover. I was sick in my heart during the goodbye scene and then to my stomach during the hellhound scene

In the motel room, when Sam and Dean were trying to decide on the best way to deal with the impending battle - Dean: “All I’m saying Sammy is you’re my weak spot…and I’m yours”.
Then Sam continues "I think you totally should have been jammin Eye of the Tiger right there."
Dean: "Oh, bite me! I totally rehearsed that speech too."

I was blown away by how Sam and Dean went from angry to angsty...the singing scene was incredibly joyful and sad. Jensen and Jared couldn't have been more perfect in their roles. These guys are some of the best actors on TV. I just wish they received more accolades for their talent!

Greetings Sample,;)

I have to ask, do you secretly write for SPN?

I've been reading your blogs for awhile now and I'm amazed that you've hit correctly almost everytime with your analysis.

You put so much thought into your blogs, that I can certainly understand why :) read them.

I love your thought process.

Rock on Sample!!!

Hi SJ!

I was reading the comments over on Tina's blog, and a lot of them are guessing the same things that we are...

Because they zoomed into Dean's eye, and the effect reminded several people of neurons firing off, that maybe Dean is quite literally locked in his own mind...or Purgatory, maybe. So maybe he's not quite in Hell yet...maybe.

That would also follow because Kripke said we'd never see Hell because it would be a budget-buster. Apparently Purgatory is less expensive!:^O
Unless of course, Kripke is truly TMB, and was fibbing the whole time about not showing Hell and Dean really is there...

Because one of my first thoughts was, wow, if Dean is in Hell, so is Ruby if what Lilith said was true. Which means Ruby could claw her way over to Dean and then they both could get out. After all, Ruby did it once before...

Crap! Kripke is one evil genius, isn't he? I love him and hate him at the same time!! Irritable Bowel Syndrome

I’m still not sure why Lilith would have kissed Sam.

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense...but then again, who can resist someone like Sam??? ;)

I was taken aback when Dean punched Ruby in the face. It was shocking.

I couldn't believe he hit a girl. That was my only thought when that happened.

It was so heartwarming when he said that family doesn’t end with blood and later when he called Dean – son.

Bobby called Dean "Son"???? How could I have missed that?!?!?!?!
