Supernatural: Dreams, dimples and one seriously funky drug

Redeeming Light
"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven."
John Milton, Paradise Lost

Supernatural’s Dream a Little Dream of Me episode floored me with its well crafted storyline and exceptional acting.

Jim Beaver was given a larger portion of the allotted time than he normally has. What a fine actor. It was interesting to learn some of his character’s back story, including the fact that he had a wife.

I thought Lauren Cohan’s character Bela was good. I wasn’t too comfortable with Sam’s dream sequence with her. I suppose I don’t have any reason in particular for feeling this way, but I just thought to myself – “No, I hope this doesn’t happen for real in some future episode”.

As always, both Jared’s and Jensen’s acting was outstanding.

I chuckled to myself when I noticed that four out of the six men in this episode had dimples in their chins. From Jared and Jensen to G. Michael Gray and Martin Christopher, it was a night for dimple delight.

I found it touching the way Bobby thanked Dean for saving him and the fact that Dean thought of Bobby like a father. I thought it was interesting the look on Sam’s face when he observed the two of them in the hospital room.

The African dream root, Silene Capensis, certainly lead the boys down an interesting path of dreams. They did what they did in the best interest of trying to save Bobby. In doing so, have they left themselves open for future demonic entry?

Which portal(s) did the demons use to enter Sam’s and Dean’s realities? As demons live in an out worldly realm, is it possible that the contact board Bela is using, is the actual portal to allow entrance? Could it be Sam’s psychic abilities (which had not been brought up for quite a while, but Bobby did bring up in this episode) allowing them in?

In Demonology, demons are said to present you with your past sins. They’re able to access your mind and uncover your wrong doings and will then try to embarrass you or humiliate you with them.

It was gut wrenching to watch Dean come face to face with his inner “demon” and confront his secret thoughts. The years of repressed resentment against John and the fact that Dean holds John responsible for Mary’s death, as well as feeling he had no control over being put in charge of taking care of Sam, had an almost violent overtone to the bitterness Jensen so finely portrayed.

Then we have Sam. Albeit, it was in the dream state, but he appeared to be hell bent on ensuring he killed G. Michael Gray’s excellently portrayed character of Jeremy Frost. Where did this anger come from? Was it the fact that he was feeling inadequate to begin with and somewhat of a failure in not being able to help Dean undo his deal, despite his very best efforts?

Regardless, both Sam and Dean looked very shaken and for clearly different reasons, when they awoke from their dream state.

Do you think the Fates will be able to alter Dean’s destiny?.

I’m getting a bit weary of Bela taking advantage of Sam and Dean. The writers seem to be giving her too much of the upper hand lately. It was just too obvious when Dean twirled the lock safe but didn’t re-check it to ensure the lock on the safe had re-engaged what was going to happen. I hope this type of thing won’t continue.

I’m glad Dean lied to Sam and did not tell him what he actually experienced in his dream state, for he truly loves Sam and this hurt would have been a lot for Sam to handle.

Possibly the most heart rendering moment of the show was when Dean finally told Sam out loud that he did not want to die and did not want to go to hell. The way Sam’s eyes mellowed out with sincere sympathy simply jumped off the screen. Sam’s understated acknowledgement of continuing to offer to help find a way to save Dean and Dean’s shaky response of “okay...good” nailed the path of the future storyline.

At the very end, when Dean snapped his fingers and looked directly into the tv screen, signifies the real fight to save himself beginning.

Two little notes in relation to this episode:

Met, IG, Mary and I were out in BC when this episode was being filmed. Met and IG had to leave earlier in the week. Mary and I continued on in BC. On Thursday, November 1st, it was Mary, Amanda, a fellow fan from Australia and I travelling the roads looking for episode site shootings. Although we didn’t see an actual shoot, it was a pleasant surprise to see some of the locale in this episode that we had driven by.

In Chicago, Jensen had mentioned that he had recently filmed some very tough emotional scenes by himself. I can certainly see now exactly what he meant.

Well folks, next Thursday is Valentine's Day and from the looks of it, a heart soaked new Supernatural episode awaits us as well.

Is it Thursday yet?

I've been so focused on that Dean/Demon!Dean scene that I forgot about the major funny of Sam's dream of Bela. I don't think we have to worry about that actually happening.

I sure hope not Whimsy.

Such a great episode last night - wow!

I have a theory that the dream that Sam had, was more than a dream. It involved Bela screwing him....and boy did she when she took the colt. But I need to watch the episode without interruptions before I say more.

Bela is a mercenary. Someone posited that they think that she might have taken the gun for the 'new baddie'. If that is case, we won't find out until 'Jus in Bello'. Which was supposed to be next week, but because of the frickin strike will be the week after, because it had to serve as a jury rigged season ender..in case they're not back this season.

OMG Lacey, I adore your analogy regarding Bela screwing Sam over - it makes so much sense - priceless!

I bet that has a lot to do with it, SJ. On some level, he probably felt if he can't save Dean in the real world, then by God he was going to save him in the dream world. If that meant taking out Jeremy, then so be it.

As far as Sam's little dream, I don't think we have any cause to think that will ever happen for real- I took it for what it was, just a fun little comic moment to lighten the mood before the episode took a dark turn.

Now the dream makes perfect sense...especially since it would also indicate that Sam's abilities are returning.

I mentioned over at CA's blog that the beginning scenes of Bobby reminded me of Sam's visions...the way they were flashing between Bobby in his dream & Bobby lying in bed. I was way excited for a minute 'cuz I thought maybe Sammy's powers were back!

I really hope there are some outtakes for the gag reel. Remember in Chicago when Jensen was talking about Jared playing "this little piggy" with Bobby's toes?! I had a hard time concentrating on those hospital scenes because I kept trying to tell when he was doing it.

I agree Met, the pressure that Sam is under to save Dean is incredible. I mean, having someone make a death deal on your behalf and then have things start turning out the way they have been would be incredibly stressful.

I re-watched AHBL Part 2 and the whole ending where Sam said to Dean that he would help him and all the emotion that that entailed and now here we are drawing closer to the worst cause scenario. I mean like OMG.

Lacey, it makes the best sense. I'm so glad you thought of it. Usually, I'm more of an alternate thinking type of gal, but I just was so surprised about that whole sequence, that it didn't even cross my mind that there could be some lateral writing going on in this regard. Whew!

Hey ya Rap,
That's true, the sequence used is very similar. I'm thinking that with Bobby bringing up later in the episode about Sam's powers and Lacey's thoughts in relation to Sam and Bela, that we may be lucky and they're returning.

I hope they include the outtakes on the gag reel too from those scenes. I was trying hard too to figure out when Jared was doing it. LOL

Such a lovely post, Sandra! Starting with that picture-if he isn't an angel, I don't know who/what is!!:-xI

I found it touching the way Bobby thanked Dean for saving him

These two MEN floored me in this scene.
I loved every single Dean and Bobby scene, but especially this one and the one when Dean convinced Bobby that he was dreaming. I LOVE Bobby. I love the way he cares about the guys, and especially Dean, who needs it so badly. You know it just occurred to me; Bobby gives to Dean what Dean gave to Sam and what John was incapable of giving anyone after Mary died. Goddess, this show is so sad sometimes.:_|
More Bobby, please.

Possibly the most heart rendering moment was when Dean finally told Sam out loud that he did not want to die and did not want to go to Hell
This scene DID ME IN.
Rarely can I pick one favorite scene from an episode anymore. This show is just too good, now; but without a doubt, THIS scene, from THIS episode was my favorite. So, so beautiful.
I LOVED the way Dean said, "'Kay...good.." after Sam reassured him that they would find a way out of the deal-said with an almost child-like trust and then the slo-mo look away, just before the DEMONS come back!!!!:_| WHAT A SCENE!

I always love hearing about that trip you took. You sound so happy, it is infectious!!:-D
Thanks again, sweetie!

Good morning Arafel, Thank you ever so much for your kind words. I truly appreciate them.

I find my SN trips light me up inside and just make everything feel right. When I was at my massage therapist/angel guide last night and I was talking to her about SN, she said that my aura just illuminates. I owe so much to this show and the wonderful people (like you) and opportunities it has brought into my life.:-x

I love Bobby too and you're right, Bobby does give to Dean, what Dean gives to Sam, but John could not. OMG the emotions attached to all of this - wow!

You described it perfectly, it was almost child-like trust and so earnestly displayed. Each brother needing the other and fully knowing what is at stake.:_|

The photo I thought was very representative of this episode. I love the way Jensen is looking away from the light and the staircase, but yet it's in his peripheral vision. He just needs to turn a bit and start the climb, which I believe we saw begin last night with his admission of not wanting to die and go to hell.

Beautifully said & oh so true! These men just break my heart week after week.

Jim Beaver is awesome. I hope Ellen and Samantha Ferris get the same treatment once the strike is over.
And definitely hope for more Bobby backstory too!
