A Very Supernatural Christmas - A Gift for the Heart!

What a wonderful and heart touching episode. It was exceptionally well done and beyond what I had hoped it would be.

I loved the opening sequence and the use of the old Special Presentation pre-announcement. I hadn't seen it for years and it was good to see it again. I loved the way they introduced this Supernatural episode with the explosion of snowflakes and blinking signage.

This episode leapt off the screen with so many tender and touching moments. The acting was outstanding. It was like a refreshing cold drink of water after walking through a barren desert. What a straight to the heart reminder of what we are missing on a weekly basis with the ongoing Writers’ Strike.

Wee People
The little ones acting in the present day sequences were just adorable, all decked out in their Christmas pj's and waiting for Santa in their Christmas trimmed, well maintained homes.

When the flashbacks happened with our boys, it emphasized the bleak surroundings that they had at Christmas growing up. It underscored and drove home how much Dean looked out for his little brother and tried to make it a happy Christmas for Sammy.

Both weeSam and weeDean did excellent jobs. I loved the way weeSam blew out his nostrils just like BigSam does when he sighs.

Dean's Necklace
What an emotional packed scene. So now we know, that Uncle Bobby had given weeSammy the necklace to give to John originally and that it is suppose to be special. I wonder how it will prove to be special in the upcoming episodes? The look on weeSam's face when weeDean said how much he loved it was truly wonderful.

Gross Moments
Did anyone else cringe with poor Sammy's fingernail being pulled out. OMG!!!

Weren't those knives wicked looking?

The mouth smacking, envisioning eating Sam and Dean – uggh!

Funny Moments
When Sam and Dean are in the craft store and Sam's describing the wreath as yummy and the store owner saying wasn't he just the fussy one and Dean laughing and agreeing - priceless.

The look on Dean's face with his first sip of the spiked egg nog. I don't know about the rest of you, but this looked truly real to me. I would love to know if they had actually spiked it up.

Heart touching moments:
I found it very upsetting, but brilliantly done, how they showed the abundance of Christmas, in all it’s materialistic style for some of the sequences and then we see pretty scary figures pinned up and Sam scanning his computer and it also showing scary figures, as opposed to the traditional scenes most of us are more use too. The poor guys.

When Dean said to Sam about it being his last Christmas and Sam saying that he knew and how he couldn't pretend to be all happy and such knowing that Dean would be dead by next Christmas. (My eyes were leaking at this point).

The close-up look of Sam's nervous face before Dean enters the motel room and then the look of sheer joy on Dean's face when he takes it all in and realizes what Sam had done for him (for the both of them really).

The exchange of gifts - that was so cute.

Dean wishing his bro a Merry Christmas.

The quiet silence before Sam goes to say something to Dean (and I wonder what he was going to say) and then changing course and asking Dean if he wanted to watch the game.

The look on Dean's face and Sam watching Dean, as Dean looked at the Christmas tree. (I was all out crying by this point).

The use of one of the most emotional Christmas songs out there, as the boys celebrated Christmas for the first time in years. It was so fitting for them:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

The long closing shot of the snow finally starting to fall, on the Impala, and the boys inside celebrating Christmas.

Last night's episode was just astounding!

I just had a thought. What if Dean gives the amulet back to Sam at the end of his year? It would have been bad enough, but now knowing that Sam gave it too him . . . Curse Kripke and his magnificent storytelling!

I sure agree Whimsy, it was astounding and so heart touching.

OMG - I bet you could be on to something with the amulet giving. As I'm writing this, I'm getting tears in my eyes. I bet they're probably going to do that. Talk about gut wrenching. I'll be glad when the writers' strike is settled so things can get back to normal.

Great blog. I think the amulet will play a part in saving Dean at the end of the year.

Thanks very much Jolly.

It sure would be wonderful if this did occur. It would be so heart touching.

I agree with both you and Whimsy, that somehow the amulet is coming back into play and I trust that it will be in a good way. Both our guys need a good streak of luck.

I am never going to be able to hear Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas again without tearing up. Seriously. I can't even read it on the screen. Who would have thought a Christmas song would work on Supernatural, but it did, incredibly well.

The title card, with the exploding ornament and the signage with the "very" blinking out, totally cracked me up. If you hadn't been spoiled for the ep, you knew right then that it was going to get a little twisted. I love Kripke's brain.

I loved the Weechester moments. We know the basic back story, especially if you've read Origins, but this filled things out nicely and showed the beginning of Sam's discontent with John. Although it was hard to watch, and kind of broke my heart, I'm glad we got to see it. Who else knew right away that John hadn't shown up, that it was Dean?

The brotherly moments slayed me. The discussion of why Sam didn't want to celebrate Christmas, that whole last scene - I'm choked up just thinking about it.

Best Christmas episode of any show ever.

As heartbreaking as it would be to see, I think Dean making sure Sam gets the amulet and the Impala's keys would be perfect. But yeah, Dean isn't going anywhere.:|

I thought that Bobby gave money to Sammy to buy his dad a christmas present and Sammy bought the amulate with it? I thought young Dean asked Sammy where he got the money and he said "Bobby".

Am I mistaken? If Bobby gave the amulet to Sammy, then we need to know what it is and where it came from!

That too Ranger! It can go sentimental or we could get a cool twist if it has more importance.

I agree Toady, it's the best Christmas episode I've ever seen too.

And you're right, it was amazing how they were able to use the song over at such a dramatic time. Very, very sad.

I felt John hadn't shown up either, thank God Sam had Dean. I couldn't help but think after seeing this scene, how much Dean must have been hurt when Sam left to go to Stanford.

There were so many competing emotions to this episode. I'm still all tied up over it.

Oh my goodness MaskedChic, the keys to the Impala along with his amulet - I'm totally gutted now, I almost don't think I can stand it. That handover and whatever else is going to come with it - I'm just well, let's say very emotional at the moment.

Hi Ranger, My take was a bit different on it. I re-watched the episode a few times and I was of the understanding that the amulet came from "Uncle Bobby" and that it was special. Perhaps I'm wrong?

I picture the guys had been visiting with Bobby, Sam fidling with all the stuff Bobby has, and then Bobby asking if he wanted something to keep. Then Sam being the sweet kid he was, and still being taken with his dad decided to give ti John as a gift. Or something like that!

I know, sorry about mentioning the keys! I completely understand about the emotions.

I'm now sitting here at the computer, with tears running down my face. I could so see that as having had happened MaskedChic. You could just picture the little darling looking at everything and then choosing something for his Daddy. OMG!

I hadn't even thought about the keys before you mentioned it, it took me by surprise, but you're really thinking on this one for sure, cause I bet that is what will happen and I can foresee right now, that I think I'm going to need more than a spiked drink to get me through it.

I think it so speaks to the pull that this show has on the human condition and the emotions that it is envoking. I'm be glad to get home tonight and into a hot bath and wrapped in a warm blanket.

SJ I have to remind myself sometimes (like last night) that Sam and Dean are not real! I do feel for them so much though.

This was a most awesome episode.
Loved the "yummy" scene.

And I loved when Dean said "Next thing you'll tell me is that the Easter bunny is Jewish."

This was a most heart tugging and heart warming episode at the same time.

Our boys really shined in their performances last night.

And I think the actors who played Mr. & Mrs. Carrigan deserve kudos for their performance as well. They did a fantastic job as goody goody but evil pagan gods.
