NCIS and Cane

I’m not sure how many more episodes we have left because of the writer’s strike, but both these shows continue to impress, which can be especially hard for a series in its 5th season or its 1st season.

NCIS:
I really enjoyed the way this episode was organized. A couple of shows lately have been using this flashback technique where they show you a scene from later in the episode and then will go to 24 hours or 2 days ago. It was very gut wrenching to have watch Tony try and pull them out of the water and then lay their lifeless bodies on the pier. The preview did a good job of not giving too much away, but just enough. Of course, we knew that Gibbs was never going die, but it was stressful enough anyway.

There was a point during the episode when I wasn’t completely convinced that Maddie was on the up and up. I know she got kidnapped by those guys, but everything seemed to be tied so directly to her that it was a little fishy. Then we found out it was really just all tied to her street address. In the end, I was glad she wasn’t bad because I don’t know how Gibbs would have taken that with Maddie being Kelly’s best friend and all. Gibbs is so incredibly intelligent in figuring these things out. I was very impressed that he didn’t let his emotions cloud his judgment or ability to solve the case.

The crucifixion of Haas was awful. Though we didn’t actually see them do that to him, it was still disturbing. Then Duckie takes him to the morgue to do the autopsy, and Gibbs comes down to ask a question. Duckie figures out the guy was allergic to seafood and lays the medical file right on top of the dead guy’s…well…you know…seriously…who wants to touch that file now.

The part with Tony trying to give them CPR after he pulled them out of the water had just enough comic relief in it to help with the stress: “Don’t make me kiss you, boss.” And it was very sweet how Gibbs and Maddie grabbed hands when they finally came to. Gibbs is like an onion…you peal one layer and there’s another one right behind it. I’m really enjoying the renewed interest in the teams’ backstories since the new writers took over. We get to explore their life away from NCIS a bit more.

This episode ended with a different snapshot then the one provided at the beginning of the scene. That’s the second time this season, and I kind of actually like it. Of course Gibbs didn’t open the time capsule and just went to rebury it. You can see the contents here on CBS.com. It’s really adorable actually.

Cane
Some people out there might not think so, but this show just gets better every week. I know some people gave it up for dead pretty early on, but the stories are getting a little more entangled and more interesting as the episodes go by.

Alex is getting in over his head because he is so focused on the Samuels and Ethanol. He did find some pretty hefty information on the Joe Samuels after his trek up to Canada, but some how I think this is going to backfire. It can’t be that easy to bring Joe Samuels down even if his daughter is not on the outs with him. I still don’t like her. She really, really bothers me. And I don’t trust her any more than I can throw her…and I’m a wimp!

I liked the story line with Henry and Katie. I was wondering how long it would take for Katie to find out that her “boyfriend” was filming them having sex. And Henry really came to her rescue on that one. Looks like the whole family protection thing doesn’t skip any of them. Henry really laid into that guy. I don’t typically advocate violence, but in this case, it was warranted.

The part with Pancho and the Terry (the new masterblender) is actually pretty interesting. They have a good chemistry between them that really is great. Now that Terry knows Pancho is taking medicine will she ever ask about the details? I’ll be interested to see how this storyline plays out. I am very pleased that Pancho finally told Frank that Samuels was responsible for Lucia’s death. The bond between Frank and Alex may grow strong after all.

:( Jeers to NCIS for using those cheap and cheesy CGI effects (car going off the dock and into the water). And how did Tony lift both unconscious bodies three feet out of the water and onto the dock? He must have an “S” under his jacket! And please explain why Gibbs just didn't go forward instead of backing-up into the water, (duh) the last 10 minutes were neither logical or well scripted.

Hi leann, thanks for recapping Cane, I had to work last night and missed it. I too find it gets better every week and more involved. What was the info he found out on Joe Samuels? Did Alex and his wife settle their differences after her miscarriage last week?:)

I haven't seen NCIS yet, but I did get to watch Cane. I agree with you that the show is getting a little bit better every week.

I just don't care for the whole musical guest star thing they do every week.

Alex being in over his head is an understatement. He's drowning. Now that he's called the government in on Samuels' illegally owning all that land, I don't know what is going to happen next.

Davidllaughlin,

The car going into the water was just over 1.5 seconds out of a 48 minute episode. I can very easily live with it and didn't pay it any mind. Still give the episode a 10 out of 10.

Mollymac:

Apparently Samuels has been illegally buying up land in Cuba which is against the law based on the Helms-Burton Act. Alex found this out when he tried to get in good with the new Energy Committee Chair and met with Cuban landowners who could turn their land over to Alex after Castro's death. Then he went to Canada where he discovered the lady who was basically pushing the paperwork for Samuels. He called in the Feds who take violations of the Act very seriously because of our less than stellar relationship with Cuba.

Alex was on his way to Canada when Isabelle called him. She was having a rough day emotionally and needed him, but she wouldn't voice that because she felt he was too busy for her. She went to the church to light a candle and pray. Alex isn't being very attentive, so I'm not convinced everything is ok. At the church, the PI that the Samuels' have hired to get dirt on the Duque family came in and knelt in the pew behind Isabelle and prayed out loud for Alex's soul because of the man he killed. Then he got up and walked away leaving Isabelle stunned. Later, Isabelle told Alex what the man had said and said that she didn't believe a word the PI had said. They had a nice moment, but Alex was visibly scared out of his mind. Alex and Santo tracked the PI and basically put the fear of God (read: 9mm) into him that if he ever came near the Duque family, again, Alex would kill him.

Let me know if you have any other questions, Mollymac.

Jonih59:
Thank you for your response. I didn't quite know how to put it into words, but I think you said it. Because NCIS is one of the best procedurals on TV, I can forgive them for a minor detail. Besides, adrenaline does funny things to people and perhaps Gibbs didn't turn the car because his reflexes were a little off at that point. Adrenaline likely played a part in Tony's ability to pull them out of the water as well.
