Best Laid Plans

Well it never ceases to amaze me what happens when you try to plan your life.

Last week, I had the best plans to finish out writing up what I had completely caught up on. I swear I'm completely caught up on viewing...just not on writing. Then, I came down with bronchitis, which basically puts me on the couch for two or more days.

So, I have all these notes about all the episodes that I've watched and no time to input them into the blog. And to top it all off, tonight, my beloved Colts are playing Monday Night Football against the Jaguars, which basically puts me on the couch, yelling at the TV for a good 3 hours...oh and shoving the Monday night shows to another time.

Oh for the love...when will I ever get caught up? Here's what I'm thinking. Y'all tell me which proposal you like best:

1. I pick a date just say I'm starting over...eliminating the need to post my thoughts from the episodes I have watched.

Or

2. I can pick just a few shows on my schedule that I highlight in my blog instead of posting about every show I watch. Here's the list of shows I had on my schedule in September: New Fall Season.

Ok. So what should I do?

Skip what you have watched and start from scratch. Then maybe think about bloggin only about your favorites - please don't try to do so much that watching TV turns into a burden!

Leann,
This is too ironic... I faced the exact same dilemma this weekend: finally write up everything I caught up on or just start again from a new date and stop worrying about posting my thoughts on all the previous eps.

I actually chose option C (which wasn't on the list):
Let go of the need for a daily blog (sniff) and concentrate more on posting on others' blogs instead.

Ranger99:
I think you're right on the idea of picking a date and possibly picking my favorites to blog about. A combination of choices 1 and 2. You're also right that this should not become a chore to watch TV.

Rod:
So, that explains why there was no bloggeddy goodness from you today on the weekend shows. Good for you. Since I started blogging on TV guide (in addition to my wordpress.com blog), I have a whole new respect for you. Believe me, I respected you before for how diligent you were, but doing it myself and realizing how much time it takes to really give it your all is one heck of an obligation. Or perhaps I should contemplate how you have so much time on your hands. :) Just kidding.

In any case, I think you are both right about different aspects of this. So, the next question...do I pick say 1-2 shows each night that I will faithfully blog about (unless it's Thursday, and then I have to blog about Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, AND Supernatural)? Is that the best way to handle this?

I myself always prefer to comment rather than blog but that is do to creative types such as you and Rod. I suggest blogging about shows that are good enough to really create a buzz. I prefer not to comment on shows I don't like rather than trash shows that are other peoples favorites.

My fear is to blog about something that only I care anything about!

Hi Leann,

Blogging in this site is supposed to be fun, not a burden. You should just blog about shows you really care about. If life gets in the way, let it go and wait until the next episode or until time allows. I'm like Ranger in that I prefer commenting to blogging. I'm not good at recapping and to try to do so would take away the enjoyment of watching my shows. My blogs are, for the most part, sharing interesting articles I've read that I think others in our community would enjoy.

So, give yourself a break, Leann. Life is full of enough unavoidable pressures without putting more on ourselves.

Hi Leann!
Well, first off, I say do what is easiest for you! After all, you're the one putting in all the hard work to write stuff up for us in the first place. I never seem to find enough time to write out proper blogs--I'm definitely a serial commenter. I feel a little guilty about this, but obviously not enough to actually take the two hours out to actually write something....

It might be easier to just skip the old stuff and start afresh (by the way, I missed your FNL blog this weekend, Rod! But no guilt intended!). On the other hand, if you're anything like me, all those half-niggling thoughts that you had on shows you wanted to comment on but couldn't (hope you're feeling better, by the way) might drive you nuts. You could do one giant "My Thoughts of the Week" blog and just add your snippets there.

I don't know how you all do it though--commenting on every show you watch. I barely have time to actually watch all the shows I want to watch, much less write about them. (But I'm also an insanely slow writer.) If it's easier, you could just comment on the shows you really want to write about--that would spare you having to write about the shows that, well, didn't offer much to write home about. There are so many blogs in this community that someone else is bound to write about the shows you're not already writing about.

Conversely, if you're watching a show that no one else blogs about, then writing about it could add some new viewers. I know there are shows that I only started watching because other bloggers persuaded me that it would be worth it.

A fourth option (or is it fifth?) would be to write about all the shows you watch, but limit yourself to, say, five points (highlights) about the episode.

Leann, I can totally relate. Over the summer it was just SO EASY to write full out detailed reviewcaps for my shows, but then again I had the time and it was only TWO shows. When the fall season hit, the time to watch/blog shrank twofold while the shows increased like 100fold. It's an embarrasment of riches actually. I'm glad there's so many good shows I like that I can't keep my head straight!

But I feel, like you, I want to blog about them! All of them! I want to share my thoughts no matter how general. So starting two weeks ago I decided to blog on ALL my shows during the past week in one catch all post that I would post on Friday. I had to feel at peace, however, with a few things:

(1) The thoughts won't be as detailed as I would like.
(2) The shows earlier in the week may get short shifted with the natural waning of my memory.
(3) Less people will see/comment on my entries due to the time and the general length of my catch all post.

So far it's been working for me. It satisfies my need to blog about my shows, but it also puts it off until the end of the week so blogging doesn't take time away from actually WATCHING and catching up on shows during the week.

Sigh. A good problem to have, isn't it?

Leann - first, I hope you are on the road to recovery.

I have to piggyback (sorry for being heavy) on what Marci said, blogging should be fun and enjoyable. Don't put pressure on yourself. Do what you can. Have fun doing it and believe me, we will enjoy and appreciate your efforts.

I blog/post alot. I believe I have over 5000 posts in a year and a half of being on this site. I'm stunned at the number, but I enjoy this community and I love my Blog Buddies. Maybe a third of that are Blogs - my own creations and thoughts, but the rest are me chatting on other blogs.

~ Get your strength back
~ Blog what you will. No pressure
~ And know we'll (your blog buddies) be around to read whatever your thoughts are. :)
