For the Record: I Liked Cloverfield. A Lot. (No Spoilers Here!)

Cloverfield: Stahl-David, Lucas, Caplan

I saw Cloverfield last night, and I just wanted to state for the record that I really, really liked it.

Here's a few spoiler-free thoughts:

-- The movie did not give me a headache nor did it give me motion sickness given the "shaky cam" style.

-- The movie really is "Godzilla" meets "Blair Witch," but the merger works extremely well. It's a great film.

-- I was very impressed with the young cast: Michael Stahl-David (Black Donnellys), Lizzy Caplan (The Class), Odette Yustman (October Road), Mike Vogel (Grounded for Life), Jessica Lucas (The Covenant), and T.J. Miller (Carpoolers). I hope this film is a great springboard for them.

-- I won't comment on the storyline, since I'm keeping this strictly spoiler-free.

-- I've read quite a few negative reviews of the film (not on this site), and while reading them I couldn't help wondering if the reviewer and I had watched the same movie. To each their own of course, but I personally found the negative reviews to be way off base. (Sure, this movie isn't the next Oscar-sweeping tearjerker, nor is it the answer to every mama's-basement-fanboy's wetdream for a bloody monster flick, but it is a darn fun movie on its own.)

-- There is a something at the end of the credits, so you might want to stick around if you're so inclined.

Although I haven't really read any reviews, I've noticed some bad vibes here and there. It's nice to get your take. Having so many viewing preferences in common with you, it's very likely I'll have the same reaction. Thanks Rod!

Okay...well you've answered the questions that I was wondering about so Cloverfield goes on my "to see" list.

I often find myself wondering of the critics and I have seen the same TV show or movie...both in likes and dislikes. It all comes down to personal taste!

I never agree with the critics. Usually if they love a movie, I know I will hate it and if they hate it, it'll be wonderful.

I was invited to a midnight showing of Coverfield Saturday night but I didn't go. I thought I'd wait for it to get to the $2 theater first. I might rethink that now. Thanks Rod.

I read an interesting piece of trivia, which those of you looking for a connection between the title of the movie and the movie itself may find interesting. According to the review in my paper, it was named after the Cloverfield off-ramp of the Santa Monica Freeway, which J.J. Abrams takes to get to his office in Santa Monica.

The reviewer, BTW, gave it a middling critique, calling it a monster movie for the MySpace generation.

Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla? Well that there is a marketing goldmine.

Oh, no kidding?! That's pretty wild. That's my least favorite ramp; I only ever used it to get to the recycling center. Now it'll mean something more. :) I knew I liked that JJ for a reason.

Famin - I was just wondering exactly where his office is; I should try to look it up. I used to work on Colorado Avenue, which has a bunch of big office buildings now. Maybe he's in one of those.
